As the polling dte for this extremely importnt election pproches, students should be seemingly more pprehensive, more nxious, nd more endnisistir shout politicl issues sod the pltforms of the vrious prties. However, s hs been the trdition in the pst, students re not in the lest concerned bout the issues or the election. Cmpign enthusism hs lgged even with the cndidtes themselves. Some prties pprently hve no system or or- Wht's Behind The Bomb? gniztion whtsoever for conducting their cmpign progrm. Some people were lte in nnouncing nd dvertising their cndidcy. Such fcts re bd news, for if the cndidtes ren't ll up in rms bout the election, then there is no reson why we should expect the students to be, either. But this is nothing new; it's "old ht." Student Council elections of pst yers nd the vrious cmpus elections tht hve been conducted so fr this school term hve ll hd one unfortunte chrcteristic generl student pthy nd indifference towrds the cndidtes nd their respective pltforms nd offices. Student Protection: City's Responsibility HOW MUCH PROTECTON does Richmond fford its citizens sod the students of Estern? Lst week, ter gs bomb ws thrown through the window of locl estblishment where lrge number of Estern students were pursuing entertinment The pnic nd chos tht errupted resulted in severl University students being injured or sickened. Approximtely 20 students were treted t the Pttie A. Cky nfirmry. t is impertive tht this incident be thoroughly investigted by Richmond officils. Presently, the whole sitution is clouded by too mny loose ends, too mny "ded ends," nd too mny un-nswered questions. For the benefit of the business' proprietor, the locl community, nd the Estern students who frequent Speck's, the Richmond officils must initite rigorous progrm of investigtive ction in n effort to der up this episode nd to mke the community more sfer in the future. Wht could hve been the culprit's motives? Why ws the bomb thrown? Why ws Speck's the trget? Why were college students mde victims of the s- sult? Who ignited the bomb, nd where did he procure it? Why wsn't the culprit pprehended; re there ny suspects? Strtling s it my seem, there re hints nd indictions of subversive ctivities in the "peceful" little community of Richmond. How sfe is our town? How mny more such incidents does the future hold for us? We students re still pying the one per cent pyroll tx to Richmond, so we re entitled to ll of the protection the city clims it is giving us. We do not like to think tht Richmond looks upon us studenst merely s sources of income (the pyroll tx nd the hundreds of thousnds of dollrs we spend with locl businesses ech week). We re due the sme rights, privileges, nd protections tht ny Richmond citizen hs. f Richmond merchnts expect Estern students to continue coming into town for entertinment nd business, then they should tke every precutionry mesure to mke the town sfe for them. There re numerous indictions tht n nti-politicl tmosphere exists on cm-, pus. Estern students definitely lck interest in the ffirs of Student Government. They mke no effort to cquint themselves with the vrious cndidtes, issues, or pltforms. They won't tke five minutes of their time to mrk nd cst bllot n the clss elections lst fll, mere 30 per cent of die Student Body voted. Only four per cent voted in the mock election on the proposed stte constitution lst November. t is ironicli tht often minority of students vote on issues nd the results re hiled s the consensus of the mjority. f we re going to bost democrtic community in which the mjority rules, then the mjority hd better go into ction nd vote when the occsion demnds their prticiption. When only token of students cst votes in s cmpus election such s the one for Student Council officers, we question the significnce nd vlidity of the election even though the results re legl nd binding. There is yet chnce tht next Tuesdy's elections cn exemplify reversl of this pthetic sitution. Every person on cmpus who regrds himself s conscientious student still hs time nd must tke time to thoroughly cquint himself with the declred cndidtes nd their pltforms nd to mke choice s to the ones he feels best qulified, nd who will best serve the Student Body, nd who cn most dequtely direct the Student Government; nd then every person must vote ccordingly. As Americns nd s free-thinking students of Estern, you hve the privilege to prticipte in the up-coming elections by voting* for the cndidtes of your chosing. Do not buse this right by ssuming n ttitude of indifference nd unconcern. Vot- A Qurterbck Writes Wht Does Athletics Men To You? Mybe you cn nswer this. cnnot All know is rhst in recent yers it seems tht "old-time" courtesy hs nerly disppered not quite, but just bout. One of th el6 dys for everyone to disply the Americn Flg is the Fourth of July. Of ll the 16, the Fourth to me seems the most importnt probbly becuse the originl version of the flg ws officilly dopted t bout the time our country gined fs independence. Flg Disply em the Pomrtb f your town the homes, the business plces is like my town (Lincoln) the disply of the flg the Fourth of July is probbly given bout the sme degree of courtesy, nd respect Being ntive Nebrskn would guess tht your town, whether f be little Brcwster, County Set Neligh, or Metropolitn Omh, gives f bout the sme "tretment" nd disply. At noon the Fourth on drive from my office in downtown Lincoln to my home (3 1-2 miles) took time to count the flgs displyed on homes. didn't count the number of homes, but the number of flgs displyed ws 21. would guess tht pssed t lest 300 homi, probbly more since there re some blocks with 5 or 6 homes on ech side of the street Twentyone Flgs displyed out of 300-plus homes. Tht figures bout one to 15 homes. will dmit tht the percentge ws much higher gret del higher t business plces in Lincoln. This ws probbly true in your town, too. Time ws when ws s youngster tht most every beuw displyed the Americn Flg, the Fourth or ny other proper dy ft the yrd, on the porch, on stff. n Neligh we figured tht those few homes which did not disply the Flg were occupied by the rel poor who ctully couldn't fford one. Yet, there were *-^ homes where people lived displying the flg on holidys tht we knew couldn't fford enough food for children, clothing to keep them wrm in the winter, shoes to protect their feet in ll kinds of wether. There were homes displying the flg whose occupnts never hd enough money to go to movies. There were homes displying the flg wherein lived honest, respectble men, women nd children who never, in their entire lives, hd n utomobile. But they displyed their flg. Wht hs hppened? Now tht hsn't been too long go 30 to 40 yers. But it is "different" tody. My personl feeling is tht the flg, nd our country nd our heritge re "tken for grnted," like so mny other things. For this feel there is no excuse. Return To "Old-Psbioned" Ptriotism suppose if were editor of the locl newspper in lrge or smll town would try to correct it. would feel it ws prt of my duty to encourge my reders to return to the "old-fshioned" wy of pstiotism to the country which hs given me more thn my shre of everything, to the country which hs given me the chnce to be wht wnt to be, depending on Godgiven mbition nd bility. suppose if were n editor tody would do ll could through my editoril, news nd personl columns to encourge displying the flg. suppose 'd even run most ttrctive house d (tht type of sd pid for nd sponsored by my newspper) to encourge the flying of the flg. And, would probbly go even further. would hope tht there would be some other individuls or orgniztions in my town who felt s strongly on this or more so thn. f so, would join with them in n effort to hve the flg displyed t every home nd in front of (or on) every business plce in town. f not, would hope would tke the time, money nd effort to led the "drive." There is n unexpresssble feeling, code existing to ll who hve ever prticipted in sports which cn only be felt not expressed by words but by ctions nd feelings. This feeling, or code, is not only for one rce, or for one color, or for one religion. t is universl, common to ll. Athletics hs brought men together, nd by doing so, hs given these men n opportunity to understnd other men, nd most importnt, to understnd themselves. Athletics is Not... So you see, fellow students, thletics is not going to the gme nd drinking sod nd eting hot dogs or tlking to your friends. t is mking yourself vulnerble to the "cohesive binding" which it provides for ll, young nd old, lrge nd smll. Those of you who hve the bility to prticipte c the vrious "fkl Js" of thletics, do so. These experiences will be unprlled throughout your life. Those of you who don't hve htis bility hve n eqully importnt role to follow. t is up to you to support, to encourge, never to discourge, thletic ctivities.
