Monday, June 9 th, 2014 And Tuesday, June 10 th, 2014 Doors open at 6:00 pm Recital Begins at 6:30 pm The Oshawa Little Theatre 62 Russett Avenue Oshawa, Ontario This recital guide contains all necessary information and important dates to help parents and students in preparing for the recital, including the schedules for dress rehearsal, picture days and the recital performance order. Other necessary information, such as venue location, costume and ticket distribution information, shoe/tight/hair requirements, and our sign in/sign out procedures on the night of the recital are also contained within this guide. Please make careful note of the recital night show orders at the end of the guide to note which of the two nights your child is performing in. While every effort has been made to keep siblings dancing together in the same show and for regular programming students to hopefully only be performing on one night of the show, there are some instances for students 10 and older where they will be dancing on both nights. Please carefully review the show order located in the last section of this guide to see if this applies to your child (ages 10 and older). 2 RECITAL 2014 COSTUME PICK- UP PROCEDURES Recital costumes will be distributed at the end of your child s class during the following week: Friday May 23rd Thursday May 29th, 2014! Accounts must be up to date before costumes will be distributed.! Students should not wear their costumes prior to the picture days and the dress rehearsal to ensure that they are not damaged/stained as they have been ordered in from the United States and cannot be replaced.! Please refer to the shoe/tights/hair/make-up listing included in this package to determine what must be worn with your child s costume.! The majority of costumes come with accessories, please ensure that these are kept in a safe place. Instructions for placement of accessories, such as hair pieces, will be provided at the dress rehearsal.! We recommend purchasing an inexpensive garment bag (sold at the dollar store) to store the costume in, and for transport to and from, the dress rehearsal/recital. Please hang costume in a safe, dry place to ensure it looks its best for your child s performance. RECITAL 2014 TICKET PICK- UP PROCEDURES Recital tickets purchased by clients will be ready for pick up at the front desk during office hours during the following two weeks: Monday May 27 th Friday June 7 th, 2014! Clients who have purchased tickets will be contacted via and/or phone to inform them that the tickets are ready to be picked up. Office hours will be provided in the .! Tickets are to be picked up and signed for by a parent. Tickets will not be distributed to students in class.! Any tickets that are not picked up during the above dates will be available for pick up at the dress rehearsal and on the day of the recital in the venue lobby.! Tickets will be sold up to and including the day of the recital, provided the show is not sold out. We will notify our families via an if the show sells out.! Seating at the venue is general admission, doors open at 6:00pm.! Accounts must be up to date before tickets will be distributed. Really Live, Really Learn, Really Dance! 1

3 RECITAL SHOES/TIGHTS/HAIR/MAKE- UP LISTING Please refer to the following chart to determine what shoes/tights/hairstyle your child should have for each class.! Shoe and tight colours have been selected according to our dress code requirements for each class that were outlined in a handout given during registration at the beginning of the dance year.! In the event that you do not have the correct colour of shoes, shoe dye may be purchased from Sequins Plus.! Make-up is subject to parent s comfort level. We recommend eye shadow, mascara, blush and lipstick in shades that flatter your child s colouring.! If your child s hair is too short for a bun/low ponytail, please secure their hair away from the face in a half ponytail (i.e., half-up, half-down). Hair Tips for creating a Dancer Bun :! Leave hair slightly dirty or wet, this aids in the formation of the bun and prevents wispy flyaway hair around the face and neck.! Do not use regular bobby pins; there are special bun bobby pins available at the drug store that have been slightly pulled apart making a u shape.! A bristle hairbrush creates a smoother look than a plastic hairbrush. To create a simple bun:! Secure hair into a low ponytail, spray with hairspray.! Twist hair and wrap around the base of the ponytail, hold in place with hand.! Insert special bun bobby pins into hair 1/3 of the way then twist and push in the remainder of the way. First insert on angles making and X then horizontally/vertically to make a t.! Take a regular hairnet from Shoppers Drug Mart that matches your child s hair colour, place over the bun and wrap it around tightly. Insert additional bobby pins if needed, following the X and t example above.! Spray hair and bun with hairspray use a bristle brush to smooth down flyways. RECITAL 2014 VENUE DIRECTIONS Both the recital and dress rehearsal will occur at the same venue, The Oshawa Little Theatre, 62 Russett Avenue in Oshawa, Ontario. 6 RECITAL 2014 PICTURE DAY SCHEDULE Please refer to the following charts to determine what day and time your child s pictures are. Picture day is scheduled to occur on two days Friday May 30 th from 4:15pm-9:45pm AND Sunday June 1 st from 4:30pm-9:00pm at The Bisland Dance Centre.! Pictures are scheduled according to class.! Please arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled picture time; this allows for us to keep to the schedules below.! Please arrive already dressed in costume with hair and make-up done.! Time has been allotted for shoe/costume changes for students in jazz/tap classes. There will be assistants on hand to assist with shoe/skirt changes for these particular classes; jazz/tap students will not be sent out for help by parents.! Students enrolled in multiple classes ages 10 and under have been provided time to change costume/tights/hair in between each picture session. We ask parents of students ages 10 and under enrolled in multiple classes to remain in the lobby during pictures to facilitate these changes as students will be sent out in between photo shoot sessions.! Parents are not allowed in the dance studio while pictures are in progress, this is to keep the students focused and ensure that we keep to the schedule.! Picture purchases are optional and must be ordered that day through the photographer (debit, credit, cash only). Individual pictures will not be taken unless pre-ordered through the photographer on that day. Picture/Recital DVD order forms outlining pricing and packages will be made available to our families ahead of time if provided by the photographer.! Picture packages are available at a reasonable cost; an example of a previous package for a jazz/tap class included one headshot, one jazz individual, one tap individual, one group tap, and one group jazz. Feedback from those families who purchased picture packages last year regarding our new photographer s quality of work was very high. The studio was also very impressed with the quality of work and value to our customers.! We encourage all students to attend picture day, even if they do not intend to purchase pictures, in order to be a part of the group shots so that the studio & those families who do wish to purchase this keepsake can have a complete group shot. Ms. Bisland often uses class pictures to decorate the studio walls, another reason to attend picture day even if you do not plan to purchase. Ms. Bisland thanks you in advance for being there so complete group shots can be taken.! Recital DVD s will be available to order on picture day only (debit, credit, cash only) and include a bonus DVD that features dress rehearsal behind the scenes footage and a slide show of the 2013/14 class photos. 8 RECITAL 2014 DRESS REHEARSAL SCHEDULE Please refer to the following chart to determine your child s scheduled dress rehearsal time. The dress rehearsal is scheduled to occur on Sunday June 8 th, 2014 at The Oshawa Little Theatre from 10:00am through to 6:30pm. Students should arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time. The purpose of the dress rehearsal is to allow students to practice their dances on stage in full costume in order to better understand and feel comfortable with the stage, the lighting, and the sound prior to their recital performance. It is a necessary component of their dance training to ensure a stress-free and well prepared recital performance. Every effort should be made to attend.! Students should arrive with hair and make-up done and wearing the appropriate costume/tights as per their first scheduled dress rehearsal performance. Any additional costumes/tights should be properly stored (we recommend a garment bag, can purchase at the dollar store) and brought with them to the dress rehearsal.! Parents are not allowed to watch the dress rehearsal or enter the auditorium while the dress rehearsal is in progress.! Parents may wait in the hall to the left of the lobby where there is seating available. Upon completion of their child s dress rehearsal, dancers will be released to parents similar to after-class procedures at the studio.! Students are not permitted to stay and watch the dress rehearsal at the completion of their class s rehearsal time. This is to help the next group of dancers who are rehearsing on stage to maintain their focus.! We encourage parents of children under the ages of 10 who are enrolled in multiple dance classes to stay in the seating area in the hall to the left of the lobby in order to assist their children in costume changes between stage rehearsals (from jazz/tap to ballet or from hip hop to acro etc.). Solos/Duets Ms. Bisland & RECITAL STUDENT SIGN IN/SIGN OUT PROCEDURES Please follow the guidelines below when dropping off and picking up your child at the recital on Monday June 9 th, 2014 and/or Tuesday June 10 th, 2014 (according to the show schedules in the next section).! Please have your child arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the show (6:00pm).! Students should arrive in their costumes with hair done and make-up applied (please refer to the shoe/tights/hair listing included in this package).! For students performing in multiple dances, please arrive in the costume of the dance your child is scheduled to perform first (please refer to the Show Order charts included in this package), with the hair done according to the directives found in this guide for that particular class.! If your child is registered in BOTH ballet and jazz/tap classes please note that we recommend students wear pink ballet tights OVER beige tights if they are dancing their ballet routine first or beige tights OVER their pink tights if they are dancing jazz or tap first (ages 10 and under). This allows for an easier time Really Live, Really Learn, Really Dance! 8

10 changing backstage (this can apply to any dancers performing in multiple dances where two colours of tights are required, feel free to follow).! Upon entering The Oshawa Little Theatre, please follow the signs directing you to the sign in stations.! Parents/guardians must sign their child in at the stations; this includes those student who are watching the first half and performing in only the second half (please refer to the Show Order chart included in this package). Dancers must have all required costumes, shoes, and accessories when they are signed in (please clearly label all items). We also recommend packing bottled water and quiet activities such as books, colouring etc.! After being signed in students will be brought to the supervised holding areas where they will remain until they are brought backstage to prepare for their dance. Parents are not permitted in the supervised holding area. BDC teachers, volunteers and senior students will be backstage to assist with costume changes as needed.! Upon completion of their performance on stage, students will be brought back to the supervised holding area. They will remain there until the end of the show in their last costume of the night for the finale, bow and awards ceremony. For those students dancing in only one act of the recital, please see the next bullet point.! The following list of classes are those who dance in the first act of the show only and are eligible to purchase a student ticket. These students sign in at the beginning of the show and sign out at intermission. They then watch the second half of the recital from the audience with a student ticket. We remind families that these students will be invited back up on stage at the end of the second act for the awards ceremony. We strongly encourage you to stay for the whole show, both to support the other dancers performing in the second half and so your child does not miss out on the special events at the end of the show. Again, we encourage the above students dancing in only one act of the recital and their families to stay and watch the portion of recital that they are not performing in as an audience member. This not only allows them to see what they are working towards, but also is indicative of the supportive community BDC encourages. It can be disheartening to a dancer to look out on the audience and see that many seats are empty due to families leaving the performance early. We want all our dancers to feel special on their big day, whether they dance in the first or second act! Remember, this is a celebration of all our dancer s achievements throughout the year and should be a positive, supportive, and encouraging experience for them.! Finally, for all dancers, at the end of the recital and awards ceremony, all students will be brought back to the holding area. Parents are asked to move through the lobby and wait in the hall to the left of the sign in/out station, as the lobby is very small. Students will be released by class; an announcement will be made to our families waiting in the hall. We ask that as soon as your child is signed out, you move back to the hall for any pictures as the lobby is very small. RECITAL 2014 SHOW ORDER In order to assist your planning we have included the running order of the recital for each of the two nights, as it will occur that evening. Please make sure to bring your child dressed in their costumes with their hair and make-up done. For those students performing in multiple numbers, please arrive in the costume that corresponds with their first scheduled dance of the evening. For students ages 10 and under enrolled in both ballet and jazz/tap classes, please arrive with your pink ballet tight overtop of your beige jazz/tap tights with hair in a bun if dancing ballet first or vice versa with hair in a ponytail if dancing jazz or tap first.
