3 Co-Curricular update Winter Term 2 Co-Curricular All programs have been provided to coaches and are available on the Rostrevor College website, along with weekly maps that will be updated by Wednesday of the week your son is playing at an away venue. Rostrevor v St Kevin s College 2 Jeff Fischer Co-ordinator - Co-Curricular Activities 1st 2nd 3rd 4th RC SKC Players: G Hutchinson, K Ward, B McCarthy, D Pisani, O Petrohilos, B Jonas, T Egan, N Scheid, D Ferreira, M Lochowiak, J Grant Goal Kickers: O Petrohilos 3, D Fogarty 2, D Haynes, J Anderson, N Scheid, A Davies, D Ferriera 1 A large crowd enjoyed the night fixture between St Kevin s College and Rostrevor College who competed for the 53rd time since the inaugural match in 1924 for the Sturt Cup. Both teams were up for the occasion early as a tight contest unfolded throughout the first quarter and Rostrevor s willingness to chase and tackle maintained pressure on the St Kevin s boys from the outset. Rostrevor scored first and for the first time this year were able to apply scoreboard pressure on our opponents. A second RC goal and a goal to SKC rounded out the first quarter in what was a very even contest. In the second quarter St Kevin s kicked the first goal to level the scores before Oliver Petrohilos put his first through for the night. St Kevin s then pushed a momentum shift towards them and the ball was played in their half of the ground for the remainder of the quarter. Rostrevor were composed out of defense, but found it hard to get past the half forward line as extra defensive numbers were needed to stifle the SKC running machine. A number of unfortunate incidents led to Darcy Fogarty, Mikey Coombes and Dale Haynes limping from the ground and St Kevin s took full advantage claiming a 13 point half time lead. The boys were asked to dig deep and play for each other in the second half and they responded as asked applying fantastic intensity and pressure and the tackling was a true highlight of the way the boys fought back into the contest. A pack crunching clearance from Nick Scheid led to a sensational goal from 30m out on the run and the boys were inspired to maintain their efforts as they wrestled back the lead with goals to Anderson and Davies contributing to a 9 point three quarter time advantage. Coach Malkin then asked for a courageous last quarter and the boys kept crashing in to ensure that St Kevin s did not get any momentum. The second half saw Rostrevor take advantage of their leg speed all over the ground, not only to create space, but also defensively. In the last quarter St Kevin s responded and drew within 5 points on 2 occasions, but the boys refused to give in. Captain Darcy Pisani lead from the front with fantastic voice and instruction around the contests which was really important in keeping everyone switched on. Rostrevor killed the contest in what was a tense game by kicking the last 2 goals whilst displaying a lot of poise and courage. player and exchange medalist, Guy Hutchinson, had a fantastic four quarter contribution. He is tough in and under at the contest, tackles with real intent, uses the ball really well and his poise and confidence in the backline in the second half helped us win the game. Kurtis Ward was exceptional around the contest with his desire to win the ball and his voice around the ground. Brad McCarthy was tough as nails, putting his head into packs (with a couple of stitches from last week) and is really important, getting the ball out to our runners. Captain Pisani got several effective possessions, went in hard at the contest, didn t take a backward step and his voice and leadership was really important. Petrohilos was the pick of the forwards, providing a great target and having eight shots on goal. Ben Jonas has improved rapidly with his rucking skills and playing an important role a kick behind the play. Taryll Egan had a really good game at full back and was very important with his rebound in the second half. Scheid and Mickarley Lochowiak are growing in confidence and playing very well in their respective roles with composure and toughness at the contests. 1st XI Soccer Rostrevor 5 def Mercedes 1 Jon-Luke Casalbore scored another hat-trick as the First XI made light work of Mercedes College in the Messenger Cup. Antoni Panagoulias fired an early shot into the top corner, before poking in a second from close range. Casalbore thumped in a third from 20 yards, and tapped in his second after half-time. Mercedes scored a consolation goal in the second half but with Casalbore continuing his best form in night games thrashed home his third and the team s fifth, while Panagoulias has returned to action after being plagued by ankle problems. Both made a point, after scoring, of going over to celebrate with the midfield wizard, Patrick Caraccia, who has done much to help the forwards head the goal tally so far this season. The manager was clearly happy that his side have found their goalscoring touch after a poor performance against St Ignatius. Panagoulias struck early, thumping an unstoppable shot across the keeper. The forward
4 CO-CURRICULAR junior years then side-stepped two defenders to prod in a second from eight yards after Louis Conterno and Marcus Sosa combined to set him up. Rostrevor eased off with victory secure, yet still could have had further goals, with substitute Adrian Guerrera striking the post before having a chip turned on to the bar by the keeper. Patrick Caraccia was clearly the difference through the middle ably supported by Conterno and Isaac Handley. As changes occurred the system broke down somewhat but the input of the half time oranges and snakes brought out a renewed vigour in the Red and Black. Another solid performance from the back four of Luke Strangio, Anton Gabbana, Nathan Monda and Matthew Mezzini limited the Mercedes attack to long balls over the top and speculative shots from distance, which were easily dealt with by Simeonakis between the sticks. Firsts manager John Coop noted: Caraccia had a really great game today. He was on fire and moved well, Casalbore as well. I have not really thought about a side for next Saturday though. I just wanted to win this game. We re taking it one game at a time. In other Co-curricular News: 10A soccer player Will Cook scored an incredible 7 goals in the 9-0 win over Sacred Heart 1st XI soccer player Jon-Luke Casalbore continued his impressive run of form scoring another 3 goals against Mercedes on Wednesday night in the teams 5-0 victory If your son, be he a current or past scholar, has made any significant achievement in an activity outside of the College, please pass this on to me via to jfischer@rostrevor.sa.edu.au or by phone, so that I can include his achievements in the weekly newsletter.
