1 Fortnightly Up-Date 8 th March, 2013 Red Nose Day Friday 15 th March The School Council have been eagerly putting together a programme for Red Nose Day at Brooke Priory. The aim is to do something funny for money and that is just what is planned! Everyone will come to school in their home clothes, which should include at least a splash of red. Funky hairdos will be most welcome and gels and colours may be used! During the day each class will have a talent contest, there will be drawing competitions and all P.E. lessons will include red balls. To enjoy all of the above activities children will donate 2. Members of the School Council will be selling cakes at playtime for 50p each. Red noses will be on sale all next week at a price of 1. Years V and VI Welly Day at Brooke On Friday, 8 th March, Years V and VI went to Brooke on a Welly Day. It really was a day for wellies! As our parents were dropping us off at Mrs Bell s house, the fog was a pea-souper and it was starting to rain! However, the weather did not put us off! This had to be better than our usual Friday morning lessons! We set off for the woods and were given the task of building a shelter. In groups of five we had to find all the materials we would need to construct the shelter we had in mind and then put it together. We used branches and tarpaulins. There were some awkward moments when things didn t quite go to plan but we ended up with something that looked quite good, although we were very glad we did not have to test it out overnight! Instead we headed back to school on foot, in our wellies, across muddy fields, in the rain. In the car earlier that morning, Brooke hadn t seemed that far away! By Freddie and Ruben Scott (Form VI) Nursery & Kindergarten Enjoy a visit from an Optician Following the success of last year s visit, James from Simmons Opticians once again visited the Early Years children. He showed them the values of being able to see, using some puzzles. A group of children completed the puzzles using all their senses; this was followed by a second group who were blindfolded before carrying out the same task. This is too hard I can t do it Sophia Stroud. The children watching were all in agreement that this was much harder. James then discussed the reasons for visiting an optician. This was followed with a game to put the correct size of glasses onto the soft toys. The children laughed as they tried to match the glasses to the teddy. We were also shown 3D pictures and wore special glasses to make the images rise out of the paper. Most of the children identified the pictures correctly. James then gave each child a contact lens to feel and there was much discussion about how it felt. The finale of the visit was for the children to experiment with the many frames on offer and look at themselves wearing glasses, many for the first time. All in all an informative and exciting visit, we look forward to James visiting again next year.
2 I looked funny in those yellow glasses! Coco Martin (Nursery) Glasses are for helping us see. Gus McMurray (Nursery) We had to play a game and we had to feel it because we couldn t see! Netball Oakham U10 Tournament Sunday 3rd March After last year s torrential rain/sleet which caused the abandonment of the tournament after two games, it was a delight to wake up to sunshine for this year s event. The girls played three matches in their morning pool, which gave them enough points to play in the Plate section semi finals match. We fought hard but the opposition just squeaked a win leaving us to contest the Spoon section final, where we met Copthill Prep from Stamford. We played much better in this match which saw us step onto the podium at the presentation to collect our glass shield. Well done to our mixed squad of girls and a big thank you to the parents who gave them such great support. Leicester Grammar U11A and B Tournaments Wednesday 6th March The U11 team had matches against Stoneygate, Bradford Grammar School and OLC Loughborough in their pool round. We played lovely netball beating OLC and played equally lovely netball but just lost to both other teams in very close matches. The top four teams of the day contested the main trophy and the other four played off for positions. We played terrifically well to beat Stamford with a good goal difference so ended up top of the play-offs. A super effort. We were unlucky not to make the main final as that was contested by Stoneygate and Bradford, both from our pool. Squad: Alex, Saoirse, Mya, Taryn, Clare, Eve, Willow and Isabella (Taryn player of the day) IAPS Tournament at Uppingham School Thursday 7th March The very next day we travelled to Uppingham School for the IAPS tournament, again wonderfully supported by our parents who helped with transport, packed super lunches and made great cakes to celebrate Mya's birthday! We had seven matches to play, each section having eight teams in it. We all knew there was a hard day ahead for our small school against some mighty competition. We played beyond our dreams in the first match to hold off King Henry V111(Coventry) to a 2:2 draw giving us our first points. We had two good wins against Beeston Hall (who had travelled from Cromer!) and Westbourne plus some close defeats where we picked up points for goal difference. We won't dwell on the last match where Warwick Prep (they won every match handsomely) punished our tired legs! To their enormous credit the girls came off court praising the oppositions speed and ability not bemoaning the score line. Once all the scores were in, we were over the moon to be placed fourth in our section and overall on points across all sections we were just in the top half of the tournament. FANTASTIC effort girls, well done! Squad: Alex, Saoirse, Mya, Taryn, Clare, Eve, Willow and Isabella (Mya player of the day)
3 ISFA Football Tournament On Wednesday 27 th February the U11A football squad travelled to Repton to compete in the ISFA U11 7- a-side Regional Football Tournament. On arrival at Repton it became obvious that this was a prestigious tournament with schools from across the Midlands represented. However, our boys were not daunted by this and were eager to get started. Our first match was against Grace Dieu and although we outplayed them for the majority of the match they managed to sneak a goal just before half time, and with only six minute halves we couldn t get an equaliser. The second game saw an almost carbon copy performance and result for the boys, a 1 0 loss to Kings Hawford from Worcester. The referee commented after the game that he had not seen a better side in the competition as yet and that we had been unlucky to lose. The boys now had a mountain to climb in order to qualify for the quarter finals. Undeterred by their earlier misfortune in front of goal and buoyed by the positive comments from both myself, parents and the referee about how we were playing the boys approached the challenge of qualification for the quarter final with increased determination. We knew that we had to win our remaining two group games and if possible by big score lines to help with our goal difference. The boys played at an even higher level and tempo than they had all season and managed a 2 0 win over Royal Wolverhampton with goals from Jacob Davies and Henri Cooke and an even better 3 0 win against Eversfield with a superb hat trick from Ruben Scott. This gave the boys a chance to qualify for the quarter finals, which I am proud to say they did. The Quarter final draw pitched them against Kings St Albans from Worcester. The game was a tight affair with Kings controlling the first half but without troubling outstanding goalkeeper Joe Rumble. Brooke took control of the second half driven on by the tireless work of Freddie Scott, which saw us encamp in the Kings penalty box with four consecutive corners but with no goal to show for it. This meant that the boys had to go into the dreaded penalty shoot out. The result at the end of the regulation six spot kicks was 3-2 to Kings St Albans and so we were out of the main competition. Understandably physically and emotionally drained the boys lost to Kings Hawford again 3 0 in a playoff semi final but managed to dust themselves down for the 7/8 th place final where they beat Grace Dieu 1 0 with a wonderfully worked goal that saw Ruben Scott pass to Henri Cooke whose first time lay off found Jacob Davies, who slotted the ball home neatly with his right foot. This was a fantastic way to finish the day and nothing less than the boys deserved. They worked tirelessly for each other throughout the day and with a bit of better fortune they could have gone all the way. Well done Boys. Sports Report Oakham U10 Rugby Tournament On Sunday 3 rd March our U10 boys took part in the annual Oakham School U10 Rugby Sevens Tournament. This is always a hotly contested Tournament with independent Prep Schools travelling from all over the Midlands to take part. The boys new that the task in hand was a big one nevertheless they approached it with their usual enthusiasm and determination. With each game that they played the boys grew in confidence and their team spirit shone through. In their third game they got a well deserved win which gave them even greater confidence for the afternoon matches. Although they did not win any more matches the confidence that they had gained from their morning victory enabled them to compete strongly in the afternoon scoring a number of tries and making some crunching tackles. I was extremely proud of all the boys, well done. U10 Squad: Ned Forryan, Archie Baker, Ben Whyman, Luke Haywood, Frederick Waberski, William Ryder, Jed Gelderbloom and Tudor Martin.
4 Sports Report Week 8 What a busy couple of weeks it has been on the sports field. At the end of my last report we wished the boys and girls luck for their forthcoming regional football and netball tournaments, you can find out more about how they got on in separate reports within the newsletter. In our regular season sport we have seen some great performances with matches against Copthill, Fairfield and Ratcliffe College as well as the LGJS netball tournaments where I am delighted to report that our U11B Girls came Runners Up. With only a couple of weeks until the end of term our competitive sport is coming to a close but we still have next week s cross country at Copthill, matches against Grantham Prep and the always exciting and keenly contested House netball and football competitions to look forward to. Let s hope we have a rousing end of term to keep us all going over the Easter break before the excitement of the summer term is upon us. See you on the sidelines soon. Wayne Faulconbridge, Head of Sport PLEASE NOTE: Fixture information is now available on the school s website: and parents are asked to check that there have been no last minute changes.
