WORLD BOOK DAY A huge thank you to everyone who supported our book location competition and the book sale. The competition entries were fantastic; the more you looked the more detail you saw and the idea of building a scene really captured everyone s imagination. The book sale held in aid of the charity Bookaid raised more than 50. This money will help support the provision of books and libraries in African countries. Year 1 s thoughts on World Book Day For World Book Day everybody brought books into school to sell at our stall. We donated books to sell for 20p each to raise money for people who don t have many books in African countries. We made scenes from our favourite story and had a competition. Everyone who brought in a story location scene will get a little something. There were 58 entries for the competition that is over half the children in the school!! We spent a long time making the scenes. By Florence, Noel, Annie, Isaac, Kirra, Mason, Olivia,
Julia Jellyfish Last month Julia Jellyfish came into school to talk to the Year 6s about high school. She asked us what worried us. She had 13 sheets of paper for us to write on and it had a few questions on about high school. We had to give our honest opinion. A few people were worried about bullies. She reassured us all that there are no bullies and any problems we might have are sorted very quickly. By Alfie and Jonny Weetabuddies In breakfast club we had great fun designing a Weetabuddie. A Weetabuddie is a scrummy delicious breakfast for everyone to enjoy. It is made up of a Weetabix and all kinds of healthy fruit. By using different fruit you can turn it into a Weetabuddie. We had a competition in drawing or making a Weetabuddie and there were five main winners. Come along and join the Weetabuddies for breakfast one day. Scandinavia In our topic location we have been learning about Scandinavia. We have learnt a lot of facts. Here are some of them. The countries in Scandinavia are Norway, Sweden, Denmark and sometimes Iceland and Finland. In class we made some postcards for our friends. We included a small message, a picture and an address. In Scandinavia they have a special feature called the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are caused by the sun s rays penetrating the Earth s atmosphere and upon these rays touching the chemicals of the atmosphere, they produce a multi-coloured light show. By Esther and Oliver. The library van visit A few weeks ago the library van came to our school. Several children from each class got to go on there to pick some books to read in class and we take them back next year as the library van sadly only comes once a year. By Abbie Pliler and Ashya Quamina Visit to the Methodist chapel Last week all of Garboldisham School went down to the Methodist Chapel. We heard a few paragraphs from the Bible about Jesus and a few of his followers (the two that were fishermen) and some of the Reception children held up signs where we had to do actions and say what was on the signs. The school also learnt a song called One more step along the world I go with a very catchy tune! We enjoyed our time at the Methodist chapel and hopefully will visit again soon. By Jessica Hendry
Gold Book celebrations In this space we celebrate children who have recently been entered into the Gold Book for all sorts of reasons, but particularly for good, kind, helpful, thoughtful and caring behaviour. We think all of our children behave well but sometimes the acts of individuals require special recognition. Names only appear once but some children are mentioned in the Gold Book several times. Well done to Jonny G, Jonny W, Alfie, Esther, Logan F, Noah, Oliver, Harry W, Libby, Christopher, Destiny, Rosalia, Elliot, Hamish, Gracie, Zach, George L, Lucia, Haiden, Theo, Noel, Gabriel, Mason, Eryn, Beatrice, Jessica and James O, Jessica T, Sienna, Scarlett, Gracie- Mae, Phoebe, Chloe, Debbie, Tilly, James, Danny, Ethan, Freya Bowen, Daniel C, Logan W, Isaac, Oliver, Scarlett, Fraser, Beatrice, Charlie S, Ben, George M, Ashlee, Harrison, Georgia, Oakley, Dylan, Lauren, Daniel W, Daniel S, Ashya, Logan S, Noah, Abbie, Esther, Jasmine, Lizzie, Leigh-Ann. Everyone in Year 5 for their focused work on hyphens and dashes; everyone in Year 4 for fantastic data handling work and everyone in Beech Tree Class for impeccable behaviour on the trip to the Cathedral. AROUND THE WORLD We have been learning about the Amazon Rainforest. We have learnt that the people who live in the Rainforest have really good tactics and weapons for hunting. They don t wear many clothes but at important community events it is tradition to wear headdresses decorated with colourful feathers. In the Amazon Rainforest there are poisonous dart frogs, jaguars, snakes and other creatures. Also in the Amazon River there are dolphins, Pharanahs and other animals. The Amazon is in South America and the river is the second longest in the world. The first longest is the river Nile. Rosie and Elliot in Rowan Tree Class Breakfast Club Every day from 7.45am to 8.45am After School Club Every day 3pm to 4pm. All age groups welcome. Different activities each day Sports Clubs Football Tuesday 3pm-4pm Netball Wednesday 3pm-4pm Rugby Friday 3pm-4pm Please see Jo in the office for more details. The Night Pirates As part of world book day, Reception class read The Night Pirates. Since then we have been doing lots of work about Pirates. We have loved making props for our sunken pirate ship role play corner, as well as creating treasure maps with different materials. We even stained them with coffee to make them seem old. It was also great fun cooking and eating our pizza treasure maps. Lisa Howard New Play Equipment Our loved play equipment is rotting and has been condemned, but it has lasted a good 11 years! We have sent letters to various companies to ask for money to help us buy metal versions and hopefully these will last longer. We will need to raise at least 10,000 to buy it all. By Logan S and Noah
Desert In topic we are learning about the Sahara desert. We learnt about dugouts and we watched a clip about a boy called Mamaduke who had to find water for his cattle. He went through sandstorm and a fight with elephants. He had to get the water otherwise the cattle will die! In the end the cattle got the water and the elephants found a different part of the lake. It was all fair in the end. By George and Lydia Maths with Mr. Widdeson A few days before half term the Year 4, 5 and 6s did some algebra with Mr Widdeson from Diss High School. He is the Head of Maths at the High School. We did a treasure hunt. In total there was 20 questions x, y and z were the letters for all the questions. CRYSTAL MAKING On Tuesday Rowan Tree Class made some crystals. You need a pencil, two pieces of string 15 cm long, paper clips, a jug of boiling water and salt. We mixed the salt with the hot water and poured it into a jar. We tied the string to the pencil and tied a paper clip to the bottom of the string and then we hung it over the jar so the paper clip was in the salt water. We will leave it for a week and check to see if we have crystals. By Harry White and Jacob Football Club After school Kim does football training with children from Years 4, 5 and 6 on Tuesdays. We run around the pitch twice to warm up. We practice passing and taking penalty shots. After this we play a game of football. The good part about it is that you get a lot of space to take shots and pass the ball. We have lots of fun as well. Football is a good game because we enjoy playing it a lot. The bad news is we cannot do slide tackles. Garboldisham Football Team are in the childrens premier league. By Hamish and Harry Seys By Oakley & Lauren Big maths beat that! Every Monday we have to beat the clock. In one minute we try to beat our score of addition and timestables questions. Although we are getting better at it, it is so hard, but we get better every week. Some of us struggle in maths so we help them but we have to keep on going untll the end of it. Next we mark each other s work. Beat that is really good because it helps you think and work things out quickly. Ashtyn and Bradley Rowan Tree Class Art with Rosemary For the last couple of weeks Years 5 and 6 have done some art work with a professional artist Rosemary Humphries. Rosemary volunteers with the school in lots of ways and also helps the Little Ouse Headwaters Project. She taught us how to use only limited colours to produce a great piece of work. We sketched very quickly and then used our three or four colours only to paint a picture. We even used cut up credit cards to apply the paint! By Oakley and Lauren
Netball We are doing netball in PE with Debbie Raven. In netball there are so many positions such as Goalkeepeer, Goal Attack, Goal Defence, Goal Shooter and Centre. You only have Wing Attack and Wing Defence in seven-a-side netball. There are three passes - chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass. Netball is a good way to get healthy and active all the time. It is a fun sport and highly recommended. Eighteen people in Year 3 and 4 like netball. By Lucia, Gracie and Jonny Wynn Our class polar bear Cuddles Rowan tree class has adopted a polar bear, they decided to call him Cuddles! When someone is feeling sad/sick Cuddles will appear on their desk. So as you know Cuddles is at the moment battling to survive and get food, but every year 9% of the Antarctic is melting. GARBOLDISHAM PLAYGROUP Registered Charity: Children welcome between the ages of 2 & pm Monday to Friday per session Afternoon and all day sessions also available (12 3 pm or 9 3 pm) Jubilee Pavilion, Garboldisham Recreation Ground, Smallworth Common, IP22 2QP Contact Louise Tel: garbyplaygroup@yahoo.co.uk Cross Country On 1 st Feburary 2016 Dylan and Georgia went to Holt for the cross country run. Georgia ran first and Dylan ran fourth. Dylan came 28 th and Georgia came 48 th. Kim, Paula and Robbie Starling, Dylan s Dad, came too to cheer us on. We were both running for South Norfolk and we got a number each to paper clip on our t-shirts. We got through two rounds of cross country. I came second in the first round and Georgia came first, then in the next round, I came seventh and Georgia came tenth. We started off with the sound of a gun, then we ran through a field into some woods, through another rugby field and there was the finish line. Before our races we walked the track so we knew where we were going and we didn t get lost. Polar bear s fur appears white or yellowish, but the hairs are really translucent - they reflect the full spectrum of light, which our eyes see as white. By Freya Bowen, Christopher and Alice Rugby On Fridays we play rugby in the morning at 11 o clock with the Year 4s. We play on the field. In the morning we play non-contact rugby and at after school club we play contact. Before we play the matches we kick the ball to each other and pass it to each other. We play the matches on the football pitch and wear our rugby kit to play. By Jago, Harvey and Daniel ROMAN NUMERALS In maths we have been learning Roman numerals. For example 34 = XXXIV, 8 = VIII, 37 = XXXVII This is a clock in roman numerals up I =1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C =100, D = 500, M = 1000, 1=I, 2 = II, 3 = III, 4 = IV, 5 = V, 6 = VI, 7 = VII, 8 = VIII, 9 = IX, 10 = X This is how the Romans used their numbers in their time. L = 50, LI = 51, LII=52, LIII=53, LIV=54, LV = 55, LVI = 56, LVII = 57, LVIII = 58, LIX=59, LX=60 By Libby and Corin By Dylan
