6 PAGE 6 THE CHATTERBOX 2016 NEWSLETTER

7 2016 NEWSLETTER THE CHATTERBOX HANDICAP COMMITTEE PAGE 7 What does the Handicap Committee do anyway? The Handicap Committee at Pinehaven is charged with overseeing the handicap system to provide the membership with a level playing field for competitions. Its members are Adam Jameson (Chair), Mary Scatena, Lynn Cummings and John Graham all of whom participate regularly in club tournaments. The group meets on an as-needed basis to discuss circumstances in which abnormalities are seen in the data. How does it go about its business? Weekend results are spot-checked to see if scores were posted by members. When it is found that a member participated in a weekend sweeps, for example, and won in a net event, and there was not a corresponding score posted, then they are contacted individually and asked if they would like the Professional staff to post the score on their behalf. This happens frequently, and innocently. People forget to post or they believe that someone else posted for them. It s not a big deal, and we ve even had to remind Board Members that their scores didn t make it into the GHIN system. We examine tournament results for abnormalities. The USGA has provided us with a significant amount of guidance in this area, and we use it extensively. If someone shoots an exceptional tournament score, as defined by the USGA, then it is automatically flagged in the GHIN system. Two such rounds, in competition, in a 12-month period cause the GHIN system to place an R next to the member s handicap and it alerts the committee to review it. We are all allowed to play well and we should all want to improve over time. The system merely accelerates the process of lowering a handicap when a competitor has become significantly better in a short period of time. The results of the recently-completed Men s 3-Day Member-Guest Tournament are a good example of the committee s work. Each of the six flights paid three winners, so 18 members and their guests cashed. Those 36 golfers scores were put into a spreadsheet, hole by hole, and reviewed. and net scores were of course considered, but the analysis also looked at the differential between the hole by hole scores of the team members. Sometimes competitors are accused of throwing away shots when they re out of a hole so as to inflate their handicap. In the case of this tournament, the results fell within the parameters of a fairly-run competition. When the committee is made aware of a member who is not posting his or her scores, or not playing to the best of their ability when shooting those scores, then an examination is made using a number of statistical methods. When possible, the Chair will provide the data to the other committee members on a no names basis. Again, using guidance from the USGA, there are rare instances when a member will have a handicap assigned by the committee. This is only done after the member is invited to meet with the committee to help explain why results that are so statistically-improbable that they rise to impossible are present. If the committee recommends an assigned handicap, then the data are presented to the Golf Activities Committee. If the Golf Activities Committee agrees, then the results and a recommendation are presented to the Board of Directors. If the Board of Directors agrees, then the change is made in the GHIN system and the member is notified. Why doesn t the Golf Pro do all of this work? The Head Golf Professional is not permitted to serve on the Committee, again, as recommended by the USGA. He serves as an advisor only. The work has to be done by members so that the interactions with the membership in general are done among peers.
