3 2017 NEWSLETTER THE CHATTERBOX President s Message PAGE 3 To our returning members, and to our new members, we extend to you an enthusiastic and sincere welcome for what will be an exciting and memorable There is a lot going on behind the scenes that we hope will significantly enhance your membership experience, while also appealing to potential new members. You will be hearing much more about this as the year progresses. As you may know, our Pinehaven budget is funded mainly by membership dues and revenue garnered from outside golf events. Unlike other private country clubs in the area, we do not asses members for any deficits. Your dues are what you pay. Over the years, the Board of Directors has worked very hard to keep those dues under control, and we proudly can say that our dues structure generally is less than most comparable private clubs in the area. Our budgeting objectives have generally been as conservative as possible in order to maintain a reasonable dues structure, while still being able to offer what I believe is an affordable country club environment. Financially we finished 2016 on a positive note with the operating budget in the black. This was accomplished due to our actual budgeted memberships dues being significantly exceeded, thereby increasing our available revenue. That additional revenue allowed us to undertake many small projects that had accumulated from several years of inaction due to fiscal constraints. I will not attempt to recap all of these projects but of significance was the upgrade of our phone system, security and alarm system, swimming pool filtration system and our club s software. We have committed to additional expenditures for 2017 all of which are necessary areas needing to be addressed. Thanks to our excellent course maintenance staff we have been able to keep up with maintaining our course despite the fact that much of our equipment is old with little or no trade in value. Hence the board, being committed to maintaining and improving our course approved the purchase of a new Jacobsen 550 fairway mower, a new turbine leaf blower to assist in clearing away all the debris that accumulates on our fairways particularly in the fall, and a pre owned Jacobsen Triplex GKIV plus mower for tees, collars and approaches. The Greens committee in coordination with GCSA Superintendent Rob Bigley has identified several major projects for Of note is to improve the new red tee on hole #10, trim the limbs on the tree in front of hole #12, clear the hill on left side of hole #14 and clear the group of pines on the left side of hole #15. Also, you may have observed our current golf cart fleet was aging. Thus, after much discussion and analyzing the pros and cons we decided to replace our Club Car electric carts with new Yamaha gas carts. You are probably wondering why gas versus electric. The main factors are a gas cart is easier and less expensive to maintain, has a longer life cycle and has a higher residual value. We feel this was the right decision and we believe you will enjoy the more reliable and roomier interior of the Yamaha cart. Look for additional information in a separate article in this month s issue of the Chatterbox. Finally, and perhaps even more exciting because the majority of our debt has been satisfied we have been able to focus on potential upgrades to our club house environment not only for the benefit of our valued current members, but also for those who might consider a Pinehaven membership in the future. In that regard, our Long Range Planning Committee has been meeting tirelessly and diligently with our interior designer and architect in developing a sound plan that we believe will enhance the Pinehaven experience. The plan is still in development and no decisions on any projects have been made at this time. Currently our membership numbers are down somewhat from last year but we remain optimistic that we will reach our budget figure of 240. This is an area that you as members can be most helpful. I maintain that our best source for new members come from you, the members. Please help us recruit new members and encourage anyone you know interested in golf to consider Pinehaven Howard Huntington, Club President

4 PAGE 4 THE CHATTERBOX HOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT 2017 NEWSLETTER Over the winter months the House Committee members have been working with Chef Treacy to review and address the positive and not so positive issues left on the table from We had some seriously candid discussions on a myriad of issues and we believe that the outcome of those discussions, due to the committee members diligence and the responsiveness of Rick to addressing those issues, make us hopeful that our catering efforts will be much improved in Some of the notable points are: The menu has been condensed to include the popular items and to rid the menu of those items not generally wanted by the members. The menu will be augmented by weekly specials, including additional salads, light specials, special dinner entrees, and dessert specials. Last year s house wines have been replaced and upgraded, and based on the assessment of wine aficionados on the committee, what is being offered should be very acceptable to the membership. Many of our better servers are returning, and Rick has a revised training program that should help with the understanding of the Pinehaven operation by new servers. There were positive changes made in the bartending services. Floor management should be greatly improved which will hopefully go a long way to improving wait staff service. Linda is returning and will be much more visible and interactive this year. Rick has decided to move into the kitchen, and he has pledged that the orders will leave the kitchen in a more timely fashion and with more consistency with what is ordered. The snack shack days and hours of operation will remain the same as 2016, and there will be different snack shack staff on board. More importantly, Rick has requested, and the Board has approved, that purchased at the shack can be used toward member minimum requirements. In cooperation with the Golf Activities Committee, the House Committee and Rick have come up with a plan to be used on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend tournament play, when we have a shotgun start. Last year when everyone finished at once, it was not possible to serve that many people at the same time. We think we have come up with a plan that will alleviate the confusion. Watch for the plan when the sign up is announced. Rick has committed to an extra effort to make the food & beverage experience for our leagues better in 2017 as well, by more direct involvement between the league members, Rick and Linda. There will be evaluation forms available this year. It is in everyone s best interest to present current comments, good and bad, rather than letting a concern fester. It is also useful for good comments to be made, so Rick and staff know what is going well. We can t stress enough how much we appreciate the work and input of Scott Warren, Steve DiBella, and our fellow members on the house committee, as well as for Rick s willingness to try and address our concerns. The committee members presented constructive ideas and gave of several hours of their time to try and make our food & beverage experience better in Bob Martell and Al DeMarco, Co-Chairs The House Committee: Lynn Cummings, John Graham, Eileen Hart, Tim Ward, Walt Novak, PJ Bazanos, Ray Schnoor, Steve DiBella and Scott Warren

8 PAGE 8 THE CHATTERBOX 2017 NEWSLETTER GOLF ACTIVITIES REPORT PGA Head Professional Brian Pierotti looks forward to welcoming our members back for the 2017 season. Welcome to Matt McPhillips, our new Assistant Golf Professional. Matt has great credentials as a Golf Professional and Instructor, he comes to us from Stratton Mountain Golf Club in Vermont. Below are some policy highlights for the 2017 season. NON-PRIMARY MEMBER TEE TIMES Non-primary members may select a tee time or be part of a foursome during primary time on the weekend provided a primary member is not playing in prime time on the day of play. Member notification to the Pro Shop in advance of a tee time request will be required. In addition, a primary member may request that one non-primary member (per primary member) be included in his/her foursome on a weekend day during prime time. Ex. A foursome could now include 2 primary and 2 non-primary members under this interpretation. Once the Lottery selections for the weekend play are made for primary members wishing to play, all available tee times will be open to non-primary members on a first-come-first-serve basis. For the 2017 season, on non-tournament weekends, non-primary members may be allowed to request a tee time in primary time on one Saturday and one Sunday (not the same weekend) per month. The days have been designated by the Pro Brian Pierotti after consultation with the Committee Chairs, and can be found on the online calendar, or on the bulletin boards in the clubhouse and Pro Shop. WEEKEND GUEST POLICY A member will be allowed only one guest on weekends and holidays before 1:00 PM, and no more than three guests after 1:00 PM on those days. However, members with no more than three guests will be allowed to fill any available tee time on those days after 12:00PM. In addition, provided member play is not adversely impacted, especially on tournament days, additional guests may be allowed after 1:00PM subject to the discretion and approval of the Pro Shop 24 hours in advance. A lot of effort, discussion and compromise went into these changes at the Committee and the Board levels. All involved believe that these are progressive approaches that will make Pinehaven competitive with other private clubs in the area, and they represent positive steps for member retention and new recruitment. We hope these changes will foster camaraderie among Pinehaven members. The Golf Activities Committee: Adam Jameson, Mary Scatena, Lynn Cummings, George Gutchell, Nan Lanahan, Joe Mallia, Rick Rose, Bernie Santandrea, Lou Saccocio and Brian Pierotti

14 PAGE 14 T HE C HA T T E R B O X NE WS LE T T E R Golf Course Pace of Play Pace of play is always a hot topic of conversation. I believe there is a delicate balance that we are trying to establish and maintain. Our Course is rated to be played in a little over 4 hours, this would be for a foursome playing under average conditions. With this in mind there are many variables that can impact a groups pace of play such as; number of players in the group, weather conditions, format of play, etc. Some players and groups play faster or slower than others please try to be understanding of that. I think everyone having an enjoyable round experience is our most important goal. With this in mind please try to be courteous and understanding of your fellow members and golfers. Below are some helpful hints of how we can all work together 1. Be prepared and be ready to play 2. Manage your time on the tee. Playing honors on the tee is preferred however if you are struggling to keep up with the group in front of then "hit when ready" 3. Plan your next shot. Once you are off the tee, plan ahead for your next shot. determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. 4. Keep your pre shot routine short. Make your club selection, pick your line of play and trust yourself. A concise pre shot routine will help you play quicker and more confidently (so you don't over analyze) 5. Be helpful to others in your group. Follow the flight of all shots in your group, not just your own. Be ready to help others out; rake a bunker, replace a divot, repair a ball mark or attend to the flagstick. 6. Keep up with the group in front of you. Your correct position on the golf course is directly behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. 7. Put the conversation on hold. Never delay making a stroke because you are in the middle of a conversation. Play your shot and then resume the conversation. 8. Be efficient on the putting green. Mark, clean your ball when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it and play when it is your turn. 9. Be courteous to other golfers. If you have an issue with the pace of play of a group in front of you or behind you please handle it politely. A confrontation on the golf course does not help the pace of play or a groups enjoyment of the round. if the problem persists then allow the Pro Course Etiquette Reminder When you walk on a green, please fix at least one ball mark even if it is not yours. Please use the sand bottles to fill all divots through the green. If you do not have a sand bottle please make sure to replace your divots in the fairway. 1. Observe the 90 degree rule when crossing the fairway with a riding golf car 2. Please keep riding golf cars on the cart paths around tees and greens 3. Fill divots with sand & soil mix, if you do not have sand & soil mix please replace your divots 4. Repair ball marks on the green, even if it is not yours 5. Rake bunkers when you exit them, please leave the rake outside the bunker
