6 Club Captains Welcome OVGA Welcome to all as we start the 2017 Golfing Season. My name is Sonny Lapointe and I am your Men s Club Captain for this year. It is you the members who make this course a joy to play and I hope I will have a chance to join you on the course at some point throughout the season. This year s tournament schedule provides an excellent variety of individual and team play which I hope many of you will partake. Each of these tournaments is made possible by volunteers. Should you wish to assist, please contact the tournament organizer as listed in this manual. Check out the dates and mark them in your calendar. As members of Metcalfe Golf we are automatically all members of Golf Canada (formerly RCGA) through our local Ottawa Valley Golf Assoc. (OVGA) and provincial associations (GOLF ONTARIO). The OVGA was incorporated in 1980 and, along with provincial associations, is our link to Golf Canada. This association has more than 377,000 members playing at 1650 clubs across Canada. The OVGA encompasses some 80 clubs, stretching from Deep River, ON to Thurso, QC and south to Alexandria and Brockville. Members who wish to play in any of the golf tournaments sponsored by the OVGA must play by the official rules of golf and maintain a handicap system to Golf Canada requirements. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns. I wish to take this opportunity to thank our past Men s Club Captains, Bill Carisse and Wayne Bourbeau for their guidance and commitment to the club. I hope to see you at the members meeting Opener. Sonny Lapointe rolland.lapointe@ sympatico.ca Are your clubs clean and ready for the new season OR have you purchased new clubs for the upcoming season?? Let's have a great season and hope to see you at the Opener tournament on April 29th or around the course during the season. 7 Superintendent s Report Junior & Family Program I would like to welcome everyone back for another golf season. We were able to get a lot of the stumps ground and grindings removed last fall. In the spring we will start leveling these stump removal areas. The snow came and stayed last December and this prevented the ground from freezing. This condition prevented us from doing any tree removal over the winter because the equipment required to do this work would have damaged the course. By not removing these trees it means that staff will have to pick up the branches that fall out of these trees on a weekly basis throughout the season. On the plus side, the ground not freezing has allowed the thawing and refreezing of the snow to move into the soil and not form ice on the turf until early this March. The turf was very healthy going into the winter, so I am hopeful it will come out of the winter well. I hope you have a happy, long and safe golf season. See you at the club. - Gord Baird Both programs are geared towards participation and include instruction, activities and events. 20 Playing it Forward for Wishes Join Metcalfe Golf on July 23th for Playing It Forward for Wishes, our annual fundraising event in support of Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario. This event teaches children the concept of Playing It Forward in our community. Parents and their children enjoy a fun day of golf and activities, while raising funds to grant another child s wish. Parents and their children can choose from: * 3, 4, 5, or 9 holes of golf * Enjoy Fun Day activities on location throughout the day * BBQ for the family * Magical Wish Reveals: to wish children on the day of the event * Prizes and awards presented at closing ceremonies This event helps instill the Playing It Forward mindset into children at a young age. Children who have participated in the past have gained an understanding of how fortunate they are while gaining awareness about what they can do to make a difference in the lives of other children. In 2014 we raised $11,400 and granted 1 Wish, in 2015 we raised $41,000 and granted 4 wishes and in 2016 we raised $180,000 and granted 18 wishes. For more information please visit 18
