1 Old Waverly News from The Golf Club of Mississippi Vol Golf Shop News 1st Annual Invitational Old Waverly hosted its 1st Invitational April One hundred two competitors took part in this three day stroke play event. Future collegiate player, Ben Wood of Florence, Alabama, came from four strokes behind to win the 1st Annual Old Waverly Invitational. Mississippi will be seeing more of seventeen year old Wood, as he has committed to the Men s Golf Team at Mississippi State for the fall of this year. Scotty Patterson let his two round lead slip, posting a 78 in the final round. Richard Reed made a charge 4256 in the final round firing a 69 to take runner-up with Patterson. Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to all who participated in this year s event. A day at the course would not be complete without an ace in the field. Benton Smith of Oxford took an ace on the 190 yard, 17th. In addition to this outstanding hole, Rickey Riley holed a 222 yard shot on the par 5, 2nd hole for a 2. There was certainly potential in the amateurs that took to the course in this 1st Annual Invitational. Old Waverly Golf Club was well-prepared for the event and many compliments were given on the condition of the course. I had the opportunity to be the scorekeeper in a 9 hole match between Jerry Pate, Matt Hughes, Jim Gallagher, Jr., V.J. Trolio, and Chip Campbell on March 28th. The Old Man in the group was Jerry Pate who turned 58. The young guys were making fun of Gallagher, Bryan, Pate the Old Man before the match. Jerry Pate went out and shot an easy 32 on the front. V.J. Trolio shot 34, Jim Gallagher, Jr. 35, Matt Hughes 35, and Chip Campbell 37. Mr. Pate won the event! Wilkes and I talked about the front nine at Old Waverly with Jerry and improvements we could make over the next few years. We plan to do this on the back nine in the fall. We wish Jerry Pate and Jim Gallagher, Jr. the best this year as they compete on the Champions Tour. This was a good day. The golf course will be in great shape this year. Brad and his team are working hard to make this happen. Come out and play and bring your guests. 2 Ladies' Invitational Results Old Waverly hosted its first of two ladies' events of the year on March 24th. This two-person scramble saw 17 teams compete for first place honors. Shannon Adams and Marilynne Burnside took home 1st place with a score of 68. Congratulations to the flight winners and thank you for your continued support of women s golf at Old Waverly. Known or virtual certain is one that is prevalent in the newest Rules of Golf. A player hits his tee shot right on hole number 16. He thinks it might be in the lateral water hazard. May he do this? Not unless it is known or virtually certain that his ball is, in fact, in the hazard. Otherwise, he would proceed under the rules for a ball lost or out of bounds. A player may not assume that his ball is in the hazard. A player may use all readily available information to determine where the ball lies. This same principle applies to a ball moved by an outside agent, a ball that may be in an obstruction, or an abnormal ground condition. In the front of your rule book, you will find definitions. One of the best ways to become more knowledgeable about the Rules of Golf is to learn the definitions. To help, I will include a definition from the Rules of Golf each month. This month we will define provisional ball. A provisional ball is a ball played under Rule 27-2 for a ball that may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds. Upcoming EVENTs Old Waverly Match Play Tournament The Golf Shop is in the process of registration for Old Waverly s first match play tournament. There will be two divisions. Men s 59 and under and 60 and over. Brackets should be announced by May 15th. Please call the Golf Shop to sign up Old Waverly Homeowners' Event Old Waverly's Annual Homeowners' Golf Scramble will be held May 12th. This 9 hole scramble will begin at 5:00 pm. Call the Golf Shop to sign up today! Old Waverly Member Guest Make plans to attend one of Old Waverly s premier events on June 1-3. This event is a great way to show off your club to your guest. If you have not received your invitation, please call the Golf Shop. On the next page you will find the schedule of events for this year's great event. Old Waverly Tennis Camp Daryl Greenan, MSU's Lady Bulldogs' Head Tennis Coach, will conduct a Tennis Camp the week of June 4th-8th (Monday - Friday) at Old Waverly Tennis Courts. Please call Melody ( ) to reserve a spot for your child. This camp always fills up quickly, so make your reservation as soon as possible. Ages 5-9 8:30-10:00 $ Ages 10 & older 10:00-12:00 $ Divot Captains We will be instituting a new program in the coming weeks. The starter on duty will assign a Divot Captain in each group. It will be this golfer s responsibility to make sure that all ball marks are fixed for the group.

3 THE 25th ANNUAL Old Waverly Member/Guest Tournament JUNE 1-3, 2012 HE 25 ANNUA JUNE 1-3, 2012 Please accept this invitation to attend the 25th Annual Old Waverly Member-Guest Golf Tournament. Defending Champions: John Dowdle & Chris Curtis Old Waverly is built on a foundation of the highest quality and service, and this extends to our events also. This will be a great opportunity to expose a friend to the Old Waverly experience. TOURNAMENT INFORMATION ENTRY FEE $800 per team includes: Cart and guest fees Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday Lunch on Saturday and Sunday Beverages on the golf course Friday - Sunday Friday night reception Saturday night dinner Tee gift Prizes and awards TOURNAMENT FORMAT Round Robin Four-Ball Match Play Each two-man team will compete in five nine-hole fourball matches within their flight. Flights will be determined by players combined handicaps. The Golf Shop staff will verify all handicaps. All matches will be competed using full course handicap, less any adjustments. Points will be awarded in each match as follows: one point for winning a hole, onehalf point for halving a hole. A team may win a maximum of five points per match. Please remember that it is very important to complete all nine holes in each match. Flight winners are determined by the point total for all five matches. ENTRY DEADLINE All entries must be received by May 24, Please return the enclosed registration card by mail or fax. To avoid any confusion, no entries will be taken by telephone. PAR 3 SHOOTOUT All teams are invited to compete in an optional Par 3 Shootout on Friday at 3:00. Old Waverly s front 9 will be transformed into a 9 hole short course. The format will be a two-person best ball event. Prizes will be awarded to each flight winner. TEES Men shall play from the BLUE TEES. Men may play from the WHITE TEES. Men 70 and over may play the GREEN TEES. All players playing from the WHITE TEES will have their course handicap reduced by two strokes. All players playing from the GREEN TEES will have their course handicap reduced by six strokes. (per Section 3-5 of the USGA Handicap System) A competitor must declare his respective tee by 5:00 on Friday, June 1. A competitor may not change tees once play has begun. HANDICAPS Players will compete using 100% of their USGA Course Handicap less any adjustments made for white or green tees. All handicaps will be verified by the golf staff and corrected if necessary. If a competitor has more than one handicap established, the lowest one will be used. If a competitor does not have an established handicap, the golf staff professionals will assign them a handicap. HANDICAP ALLOWANCE IN MATCHES The Course Handicap of all four players is reduced by the Course Handicap of the player with the lowest Handicap, who then plays from scratch. Each of the three other players is allowed one hundred percent of the difference. 6 tips from the TEE Say hello to a few of Old Waverly s junior golfers. You will need to excuse the coon hat and the taller fellow in blue. Other than that, this group is a pretty good bunch. By appearance they look similar to most normal children their age, wouldn t you say? What if I told you that one of them had already made a hole in one? What if I told you that one will be competing in the US KIDS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP this summer? What if I told you that one of them won the US KIDS FALL TOUR OVERALL POINTS? What if I told you that one of them won the STATE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP? What if I told you one of them dropped ten shots off their nine-hole average last year? What if I told you the first time one of them played nine holes they made two pars? Would you believe it? Can you pick out the ones I am talking about? These juniors are building their golf swings with motion. They are not building their swings by standing on the range hitting golf balls, but instead by making swings during golf camp (and at home) that are correct. Sprinkle in some playing, some work on speed, and experience, and the next thing you know, you have an eight-year old that is a real golfer. Sometimes to learn things in life, we have to look back. We have to remember how we actually learn and get better. Here are some things you can learn from these juniors. SWINGING THE CLUB CORRECTLY WITHOUT HITTING BALLS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HITTING BALLS. MOVEMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO LEARNING A MOTION. A LITTLE WORK DONE EVERYDAY PAYS BIG DIVIDENDS. Old Waverly Golf Club has 35 blue bird houses and 3 wood duck boxes on property. In 2011 we had 201 Blue bird and 21 Wood duck fledglings. Old Waverly would like to thank Jerry Ishee and Cecil Chiles for their work and dedication. Employee of the Month If you have ever called Old Waverly, chances are good that you have spoken to Melody Stafford. She has been manning our receptionist's desk for the past 15 years with a style all her own. In addition to answering and directing phone calls, Melody also fills the roles of shipping clerk, meeting scheduler, reservation taker, and member information specialist.
