24 MEMBERSHIP THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES ARE WE DOING OUR JOB? We sign up new members We make our quotas We receive our incentives the Grand Aerie is happy our Worthy State President is happy the State membership Chairman and committee are happy DOES THIS MEAN THAT WE ARE DOING OUR: JOB? IF SO - Why then are most of the new members never initiated? Why then do we see few or none of these new members at Aerie meetings? Why then are most of these new members on the drop list after a year? Why then do we have Brothers in a position of leadership and authority that don't have a due as to what their responsibilitie s are or who we are for that matter? Why then are our senior Officers on their second or third time around filling the chairs? The Grand Aerie clearly outlinesthe proper procedure for membership and the stepsfor leadership. There is a reason for each step. Signing up a new member is more than just saying 'The Eagles is a great organization, you should join'. You take their money. Done deal/- is it? it is your obligation:, your charge to become friends with this person. Call and remind them, invite them to Aerie meetings and upcoming social or fund raising events. Ask them if they will help. Get them involved. And, most importantly, get them initiated as soon as possible! Do whatever it takes, but get them initiated. Not the slam dunk version, but the formal long form initiation that is outlined in, the. Grand Aerie Ritual books that we all have. If we are to keep these new Brothers we must educate them. Leaders of the future must go through the chairs as outlined by the Grand Aerie and not:thrown into a position % or % of the way upthe ladder just to fill a vacancy. They should start in. the Outside Guard Chair, an observing & learning position. There is a reason for each of the Chairs,. learning and adding responsibilities as they progress through the Chairs. We must clearly distinguish between casual fun activities and the serious side of our Order. Meetings, and especially initiations, are the professional business side and we must look and conduct ourselves accordingly. As Officers, our charge is primarily that of educating others We must believe in the Fraternal Order of Eagles and what they are trying to do We must believe in ourselves to do our elected jobs We must know what the responsibilities of our position entails and be willing to execute them LIKE IT OR NOT, WE ARE THE EXAMPLES THAT MEMBERSHIP OF THE FUTURE WILL FOLLOW, GOOD OR BAD! ARE WE DOING OUR JOB!! This was written by a member of the Minnesota Aerie
