As a team, we will push urselves daily t be better peple, better students and better basketball players; in that rder. Our attitude will reflect the hard wrk we have put in. Intensity In science, intensity measures the level f strength. Skyview Strm will be strng n the flr bth physically and mentally. 4 Skyview Strm Basketball Team Philsphy As caches in the Skyview Bys Basketball Prgram, we will give 100% t the team, the same as we ask f ur players. Our gal will be t help each member f ur prgram achieve the Missin. We want t make sure that each player gets the mst ut f themselves n the basketball curt, while perfrming in the classrm and being a gd persn at all times. Player evaluatin Players play. Tugh Players win. Tm Izz Caches will evaluate players based n many characteristics. We will be evaluating all aspects f ur players in relatin t ur Missin and Guiding Principle. These assessments will be used t help figure ut which players will be a part f the prgram s teams. We will als use these criteria t determine playingtime during the year. The Caching Staff reserves the right t get input frm ther caches, teachers, staff and administratrs at Skyview High Schl t assess all student-athletes as peple and students. Caches will als be evaluating the players n the curt perfrmance. Unfrtunately, we dn t have the resurces t accmmdate all f the candidates. As a result, sme f the players will nt make the team. In fact, sme players wh ve made the team in prir years may nt make it this year. This is a difficult time fr the players, as well as the caches. Please knw that there ve been n deals made. We have nt prmised any player they wuld make the team. We prvide equal pprtunity t every Skyview student. Wh makes the team is based n what is shwn at the tryut and frm infrmatin gathered frm the Skyview Staff. When creating the teams, it des nt matter wh the player is, wh their parents are, etc. it is abut putting tgether the best team fr the cmmunity at Skyview High Schl. 6 Skyview Strm Basketball Playing Time Caches will be cnstantly evaluating student-athletes n the teams t determine playing time. As the Skyview Caching Staff, ur jb is t make sure that evaluate the players and make decisins based n: 1) What is best fr the whle prgram. 2) What is best fr the individual team. 3) What is best fr the individual player. Playing time decisins are always difficult fr caches. We will be pen t discuss, with bth the studentathlete and their parents, the decisins that are made in regards t playing time. If the player r their parents wuld like t talk t the cach abut playing time, we will prvide an pprtunity t have thse cnversatins. Please see belw fr Parent/Cach Meeting Rules and Expectatins. We reserve the right t cnsult with the whle caching staff befre any parent-cach meeting. Team Rules and Expectatins Players must remember that playing fr the Skyview Strm Basketball Prgram is a privilege, nt a right. Each team member is representing himself, his teammates, caches and the schl at all times. With the respnsibility f being part f the Skyview Strm, there are expectatins that each student-athlete must meet. We hpe that all players will be respectful and meet the prgram s expectatins. If the player des nt, the cach will enfrce cnsequences, which can be extra cnditining, missing playing time r meeting with the Head Cach. If the expectatins are still nt being met, the Head Cach can suspend r remve the player frm the team. 1. Be gd representatives f Skyview Strm Bys Basketball at all times a. Players will be respectful t all fellw students at Skyview High Schl. b. Players will be respectful f thers prperty, including schl grunds at ppsing schls. 2. Attend, and be n time t, all practices and games a. Players are expected t cntact caches ahead f time if they will be late, r cannt attend a practice r game. b. Pre-arranged tardiness r absence fr class reasns can be taken int accunt by cach. c. Being n time t practice means having yur practice jersey n and tucked in, equipment n, shes tied and n the flr at the start f practice, unless therwise designated by the cach. 3. Be as fcused in the classrm, as n the flr a. All players will be respnsible t be academically eligible as based n the Skyview High Schl guidelines. If a player is nt academically eligible at the beginning f the seasn, they may nt make a team. If a player is n the team and ruled academically ineligible, the player will nt be allwed t participate in games. Players are expected t attend all classes. If skipping class becmes an issue, there will be cnsequences. Please refer t the Skyview High Schl Athletics and Activities Handbk fr mre infrmatin. 4. Players will be gd sprts n the playing flr a. Skyview Strm will be expected t shw all players (teammates and ppsing), managers, referees, caches and spectatrs with respect. b. Players are expected t listen respectfully t ALL caches in the prgram. Each cach is here t help all the student-athletes, nt just the nes n their team. c. Technical fuls are nt acceptable by any player. It is the caches jb t talk t the referees. d. If sprtsmanship becmes an issue, the student-athlete must meet with the head cach t discuss the future with the team. 5. Cmmunicatin is imprtant t the success f the team a. Skyview Strm will cmmunicate n and ff the flr in a respectful way t caches, players, parents, teachers, referees, etc. b. We will wrk t cmmunicate n the flr at all times in rder t make ur teammates better. c. As a Strm, we will refrain frm using any steretypical dergatry terminlgy. 6. Use f Alchl r Drugs will nt be tlerated a. The Skyview Bys Basketball prgram has a zer tlerance plicy fr alchl r drug use. b. Our prgram will fllw the Vancuver Public Schl rules fr vilating the Alchl/Drug plicy. If the player is fund t have used alchl/drugs, the player will be suspended fr 50% f games fr the first ffense and 100% f games fr the secnd ffense. If the player is fund t have used tbacc, the player will be suspended 25% f games fr first ffense and 50% f games fr the secnd ffense. 7. Hazing f any srt will nt be tlerated a. The Skyview Bys Basketball Team has a zer tlerance plicy fr instances f hazing. This includes all types f hazing, including physical brutality, excessive physical activity, intimidating, humiliating, stracizing, r cnsuming f fd, liquid r ther harmful substances. b. If a cach finds ut abut a player hazing ther teammates, the player will be immediately suspended frm the team. It will be up t the caching staff t determine the length f the suspensin n a case by case basis. Hwever, the penalty can include being dismissed frm the team. 8. Skiing and Snwbarding are nt acceptable during the seasn a. These activities are dangerus and ften times end in injury. Getting injured while ding persnal activities hinders yur individual develpment and hurts the team. Each cach will meet with all the members f his team t help determine ther rules/expectatins and the cnsequences fr them n their wn teams that are nt utlined abve. 8 Skyview Strm Basketball cnsequences. Again, the caching staff is pen t talk t any player r parent abut the decisins made abut the student-athlete. Parent Meeting Rules and Expectatins We encurage the bys t interact with their caches if they are having issues with team rules/expectatins, their playing time r their rle n the team. This is a great life lessn and as frmer players, we have had t have thse tugh cnversatins urselves. Hwever, the caches in the Skyview Strm Basketball Prgram are pen t have cnversatins with parents abut their sn s rle n the team, playing time, etc. We will nt have meetings, hwever, abut ther players r ffensive/defensive strategies. If yu are interested in having a meeting with the caches, there are a few rules/expectatins: 1) The Caching Staff will nt discuss playing time r player s rles n a game day/night. Befre the game, caches shuld be fcused n the game and bringing ut the best f ur bys. After the game, the caches will nt have had enugh time t prcess the game r review the game film t talk abut individual players. 2) These meetings will nt happen ver the phne. We much prefer t talk t parents face t face. 3) When a parent wants t have a cnversatin, the entire caching staff will have the right t be at the meeting. All the caches will be wrking with yur sn day in and day ut. We want t make sure the cnversatin is had with everyne that is wrking with him. 4) Luke LeCunt, Athletic Directr at Skyview High Schl, will attend all meetings abut playing time/player rles, if pssible. His jb is t help facilitate the cnversatin and make sure bth sides are heard frm. Practices Practice is the cre t ur success fr ur prgram. In practice, we will wrk n ur FAITH and help t translate thse lessns t success in the games. During the seasn, we will practice 5-6 times per week, including Saturdays, Hlidays and during breaks. It is imprtant that players attend all practices. There are a few acceptable reasns t miss practices: 1) Academic Obligatins Academics cmes first. Therefre, if a player must miss practice fr an academic reasn, that is allwable. We ask that they player exhaust all ther ptins befre missing practice. 2) Religius Obligatins We are supprtive f ur players religius beliefs. If there is a reasn that a player can t make a practice because f a religius bligatin, we will understand that reasn. 3) Illness/Injury It is imprtant t have gd health. If yu must miss t take care f yur bdy, please d. Especially, if yu are sick, as we dn t want yu t pass the sickness t yur teammates. If a player is ging t miss practice, it is their respnsibility t tell the cach directly (in persn, text r phne call) at least 30 minutes befre practice. Missing practice can hurt the team and hurts the individual player. If a player misses a practice fr this ne f these reasns, the first time there will be n individual repercussin. Hwever, missing multiple practices will result in missing playing time fr the Skyview HS Strm 4A Greater St. Helens League Bys Basketball

9 Skyview Strm Basketball individual player. If a player misses practice fr a different reasn than listed abve, it will result in missing playing time fr the individual player. Clsed Practice Plicy In rder fr the staff t build trust with the players, ur practices are clsed t utside parties (including parents), unless authrized by the caching staff. Our staff cnsiders urselves teachers and as such, we believe the curt is ur classrm t teach the players the game and abut life. Having distractins sitting curtside des nt allw the players t have the fcus n the teachers/life lessns. Outside parties will nly be allwed in the gym if invited by the caches. Injuries The health f ur players is very imprtant t us and we want t make sure ur players are healthy while participating. If a player is injured t the pint where they need t see a dctr, the caches will need t see a nte frm the dctr clearing the player t play. If we dn t receive a nte, the player will nt be able t participate in games r practices. - Cncussins The Caching Staff will fllw the rules set frth by the state (Lystedt Law) and the schl district. All players will be preemptively tested with the ImPACT test befre the seasn starts t establish a healthy baseline. Any player wh has been ruled t have a cncussin will need t see the training staff at the Rebund Clinic ( free f charge. They have a 6 step prcess t help the player return t the flr in a timely, safe manner. Cpies f the Cncussin Management Mdel will be prvided upn request. Game Days In ur prgram, we will strive t be ne f the mst unified and classiest prgrams arund. One way we can shw peple in ur cmmunity, and in ther cmmunities, that we are a team is t lk the same n game days. On ALL Game Days(unless therwise tld by caching staff): 1) Players will wear a dress shirt, dress pants, tie and dress shes t schl (unless therwise specified by the caches). 2) Players will be allwed t wear Skyview Basketball uterwear (Zip up Fleece, jacket ect) r sweaters/jackets ver the shirt, s lng as they d nt cver the tie. 3) Shirts must be tucked in, and ties must be tied tight at all times in schl, with the exceptin f classes that require a different dress cde (PE). 4) Caches will wear a dress shirt, dress pants, tie and dress shes t all games. Traveling t Rad Games Fr all rad games, players n the Freshmen and JV teams will take a bus t the ppsing team s gym. Varsity players may have the ptin t get themselves t the games at a set time. On rad games inside f Clark Cunty, players n all teams are respnsible fr getting their wn ride back frm the ppsing team s gym, because there is n bus service back t SHS. All players will be required t sign ut when leaving frm a rad game. Fr rad games, utside f Clark Cunty, all players are required t ride the Skyview HS Strm 4A Greater St. Helens League Bys Basketball

10 Skyview Strm Basketball bus t and frm games. Players may ask t ride hme frm an away game utside Clark Cunty with a parent/family member, hwever, all decisins are made at Cach Gruhler s discretin. If a player wuld like t ride hme with a family member frm a rad game with bus service, he shuld ask Cach Gruhler at least ne day befre the game. Player Game Standards G thrugh pre-game warm-ups hard. It is ur time t get ur bdies warm and ur minds fcused. Fcus n the fundamentals and get prepared t cmpete. Shw supprt and enthusiasm fr thse players wh are in the game. Be supprtive f yur teammates and let them knw yu are behind them while n the bench. Yu can als cmmunicate game actin frm the bench. Sprint t the bench during timeuts. Our time is limited and it sends a message t ur ppnents. Surrund the caching staff during timeuts. Players in the game shuld be seated during full timeuts. During 30-secnd timeuts, we will stand n the curt, as a team. Each player shuld listen t the caches and watch what the caches are diagramming. Hand the ball t the fficials after a call. It shws class and the referees appreciate it. Cmmunicate with the teammate wh is substituting fr yu. Let them knw what defense we are in, what psitin yu are playing and wh yu are defending. Check in with the cach when yu exit the game. Sit clse t the caches. Players n the bench shuld slide dwn s that newly exited players can sit next t the cach(es). Drink ut f yur wn water bttles and d nt share yur bttle with teammates. Health is imprtant and we need t limit the ways that share germs. Keep a straight face and shw class. Dn t whine r cmplain t the fficials. Be mentally tugh at all times. Dn t let the crwd, r ppsing players take us away frm what we want t d. Always shake hands with all ppsing players and caches after each game. Skyview Strm Defensive Philsphy Play hard, play smart, play tgether Jhn Wden The Skyview Strm will be knwn as a strng defensive team. Defense is as much abut desire, hustle and attitude, as it is abut the physical fundamentals. Individually, and as a team, we will be fcused n ball pressure the ther team and frcing them t d things they are nt cmfrtable ding. We will d that with a variety f defenses, starting with the fundamentals f a half curt man defense and adding ther defenses as needed. We will lk t switch defenses, as needed, thrughut the game t make sure the ffense desn t get int a rhythm. N matter what defense we run, there are a few principles that must be fllwed in rder fr ur team t be successful n the defensive end. We must wrk hard tgether t stp them frm scring. - Cnstantly cmmunicatin - Pressure the ball Defense is best played when all 5 men are talking t each ther. We must have FAITH that we all have each ther s backs t play great defense. If we make the ball handler uncmfrtable, he will tend t d things he is nt used t ding. This will make ur defense better. - Stp dribble penetratin Nthing hurts a defense mre than penetratin. Individually, we must have accuntability t stp the ball, but even mre imprtant is that we must be ready t help as a team. - Help and recver If ne man des get beat, we must have guys flying arund t help stp penetratin, Offensive Philsphy then recver back t their defensive assignment. We want t make the ppsing team play at ur pace, as we will be in better cnditin and will ut execute them dwn the stretch. Each player is imprtant t the executin f a successful ffensive play. Players are expected t play as hard as pssible, using smart basketball and t wrk tgether with their teammates t get the best sht pssible. There are tw phases f the ffense: - Push It We will attack the defense as sn as we get the ball, whether frm a rebund r if we are taking the ball ut frm under the hp. We are lking t get a great sht every trip dwn, preferably at the rim. If frm a rebund, we will be lking t push a primary fast break. A Primary break is a fast break in which we have a numbers advantage (2-n-1, 3-n-2, 4-n-3). In a primary fast break, we are lking fr a lay-in r shrt sht. If we take it ut frm under the hp, we will be lking t push the temp with a secndary break. In a secndary break, each player will have a designated lane t run t try t take advantage f an early ffense pprtunity. We will run basic sets ut f ur secndary break, which will be a series f quick hitters, t try t scre early. Each ptin in the break will be reviewed each year, and pssibly with each team, based n persnnel t make sure we are putting ur players in the best situatins t succeed. 12 Skyview Strm Basketball - Patience Lettering Criteria If we dn t get a scre ut f ur early ffense and secndary break, then ur gal will be t get a gd lk ut f ur ffense. We need t have patience, as a team, t get a gd sht. There are 2 ways we will get thse gd shts: Mtin ffense We will have a basic mtin ffense. This mtin will change and evlve based n the persnnel n the team. The basic mtin will be a 4 ut-1 in mtin. Offensive Sets We will have a series f plays designed t get certain shts in certain situatins. These sets will be frm different frmatins, but will utilize all players, as each set has multiple ptins. The gal f all ur Skyview Strm basketball players shuld be t make the Varsity team. Being a member f the Varsity team has its perks, but it als cmes with it sme respnsibilities as well. These perks and respnsibilities will be cmmunicated t the players thrughut the year. When a player is a part f the Varsity team, they are awarded a Varsity Letter. In rder t earn a Varsity Letter, a player must: 1) Practice n the Varsity team fr 100% f the practices thrughut the year. 2) If they flated frm JV r jin the Varsity team mid year, they must play in at least 10 quarters f Varsity play. Captains/Awards Fr each team, the players will be selecting their captains and vting fr end f the year awards. Each cach will be respnsible fr cllecting the infrmatin. Fr captains, the selectin will be made at the end f the first week f practice. Each player will vte fr tw players they wuld like t lead them. Captain s respnsibilities include (but aren t limited t): leading daily stretches, talking t the referees befre/during the game, etc. At the end f the year, the players and caches will award player wh have exemplified Strm Basketball. Each player and cach will have a vte t determine the winners.
