Billy Hurley 114Sv, 8.01GAA NOTES THIS WEEKEND S MATCH-UP With its 11-9 win over Fairfield University, the No. 4 University of Denver men s lacrosse team won the ECAC Championship and earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Denver will host the No. 11/12 Villanova Wildcats on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. MT in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament, marking it the first time in program history that Denver has hosted an NCAA Tournament game. The No. 6-seeded Pioneers are on a program record 10-game winning streak heading into the match-up that will be featured live on ESPNU. Villanova comes off of an 11-9 loss to Georgetown. THE SERIES The Pioneers lead the all-time series with the Wildcats 3-2 that includes a 2-0 record at home. The last meeting between Denver and Villanova resulted in a double overtime victory for the Pioneers on March 3, 2007 in Denver, Colo. SCOUTING VILLANOVA Villanova comes into its match-up with DU after an 11-9 loss to Georgetown on May 7 in Washington, D.C. The Wildcats are sporting an 11-4 overall record, 3-3 in Big East play. Kevin Cunningham leads the Wildcats with 41 points on 23 goals and 18 assists. Jack Rice leads the team with 32 goals and 73 shots, and is second on the team with 35 points. Nolan Vihlen and Thomas Croonquist are sharing the face-off duties with Croonquist leading the way with a 60.0 face-off percentage. Brian Karalunas leads the team with 71 ground balls. Junior Alex Demopoulos is second on the team with 53 points (27g, 26a), ranking him 12th in the nation in points per game (3.53) and 17th in assists (1.73). Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Faus ranks ninth in the nation in save percentage (0.577) and 16th in goals against average (8.052). Sophomore Chase Carraro ranks 11th in the nation with a 61.0 face-off percentage. Carraro also ranks 10th in the nation with 6.07 ground balls per game. Denver is second in the nation in assists per game (7.07), and ranks third in scoring margin (4.4), win percentage (0.867) and points per game (19.67). DENVER TO HOST FIRST-ROUND GAME OF NCAA TOURNAMENT For the first time in program history, DU will host a firstround game of the NCAA Tournament at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday, May 15 at 3:15 p.m. MT. The matchup between the Pioneers and the Wildcats will be broadcast live on ESNPU. The winner of the first-round NCAA Tournament game will advance to the Quarterfinals to play the winner of the matchup between No. 3-seeded Johns Hopkins and Hofstra on May 21 in Hempstead, N.Y. Last season, Denver defeated Loyola 12-4 to receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers faced the Stony Brook Seawolves in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament, and were narrowly edged by a 9-7 loss that ended their season. TOPS IN THE NATION Junior Mark Matthews is 13th in the nation among active goal scorers with 103 career goals. Stony Brook s Jordan McBride leads the way with 175 career goals. CAN I GET A HAT TRICK? Junior Mark Matthews has 18 career hat tricks to his name, ranking him 11th in the nation for career hattricks. Seven of his hat-tricks have come during the 2011 season alone, including five goals against Bellarmine on April 23. Fellow attackman Alex Demopoulos has 10 career hat tricks, three so far this season. GOING STREAKING Junior Alex Demopoulos is currently on a 32-game point scoring streak coming into this weekend s game. Demopoulos is tied for eighth in the nation among active consecutive-game scorers. Demopoulos has scored 63 goals and recorded 50 assists for 113 points during the streak that began on Feb. 19, Junior Mark Matthews has recorded a point in 26 consecutive games, ranking him 21st. Matthews streak began on March 16, 2010 and he has recorded 72 goals and 30 assists for 102 points. Bryan Neufeld from Sienna leads the nation with a 52-game point-scoring streak (119 goals, 45 assists, 154 points) that started on Feb. 20, Matthews is also ranked third in the nation among active scorers with a 26-game goal scoring streak, having tallied 72 goals during the streak. Albany s Joe Resetarits leads the way with a 33-game consecutive goal-scoring streak that began on Feb. 25, He has amassed 78 goals during the streak. SCORING DUO Juniors Mark Matthews and Alex Demopoulos rank tied for third in the nation among active scoring duos with a total of 115 points. Rob Pannell and David Lau of Cornell lead the way with 123 total points. CLIMBING THE CHARTS As of May 9, the Pioneers ranked No. 4 in both the Nike/ Inside Lacrosse and the USILA Coaches Poll, the highest ranking in program history. Denver entered the ECAC Tournament on May 5 ranked No. 5 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse and No. 6 in the USILA Coaches Poll. After defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes 11-6 in the Eighth Annual Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown on April 16, the Pioneers moved up to No. 5, according to an April 18 poll. In the previous week, the Pioneers were ranked No. 6/7 after upsetting then-no. 4 and defending National Champions Duke, 12-9, in Bethpage, N.Y., on April 9. The Pioneers previous highest ranking was No. 9 in the final regular-season poll of the 2010 season. ECAC POSTSEASON HONORS Head coach Bill Tierney earned Eastern College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, while junior Mark Matthews was named the Offensive Player of the Year and freshman goalkeeper Jamie Faus was named the Rookie of the Year. In addition to Matthews, sophomores Chase Carraro and Cameron Flint and senior Jeff Brown earned All- ECAC First Team honors. Along with Faus, junior Alex Demopoulos and senior Todd Baxter were named to the All-ECAC Second Team. ECAC HONORS In the 11th week of action, freshman Jamie Faus was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week as he finished the week with 10 saves, allowing only five goals, making it his fourth-straight game with double-figure saves. Faus now has three Defensive Player of the Week awards (March 7, April 11 and May 2) to go along with one Rookie of the Week award (Feb. 28). In the ninth week of action, sophomore Chase Carraro was honored for the first time by the ECAC as the Offensive Player of the Week. Carraro led the then-no. 6/7 Pioneers to their sixth straight win as he finished with three goals in an 11-6 win over Ohio State (receiving votes in the national polls) at the eighth annual Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown. Carraro led the way at the face-off X, winning 14-of-20 face-offs, while also tallying five ground balls. At that time, he had 14 goals on the season and one assist for 15 points. The midfielder also had a 58.9 face-off winning percentage on 142-of- 241 face-offs won. He also led the team with 63 ground balls. Also honored this season was senior Todd Baxter, who was tabbed as the Offensive player of the Week on April 11 and junior Alex Demopoulos, who was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week twice (March 7, March 21). Sophomore Cameron Flint picked up the Pioneers first Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season on Feb. 28. LEAVING A MARK In just three seasons, junior Mark Matthews has steadily climbed up the Pioneers DI record books. Matthews became the all-time DI points-getter with a five-point performance against Fairfield (04/30/11), surpassing assistant coach Matt Brown s mark of 137 that he amassed from Matthews currently has 144 points, and is also second in DI career goals (103), 11 behind Brown for the top spot. LAST TIME OUT No. 5 Denver held off a late rally by Fairfield to claim the inaugural ECAC Tournament championship with an 11-9 win this afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Pioneers, who also won the ECAC regular-season title, earned the league s automatic NCAA Tournament bid with the win and extended its winning streak to a program-record 10 wins. A great deal of credit needs to go to Fairfield and all those young men that competed and didn t give up for the full 60 minutes, said head coach Bill Tierney. I am proud of our guys for sticking in there and coming

3 up with goals when we needed them, but our team just learned something out there and that is to never give up until that buzzer sounds. I am excited that we were able to secure the first-ever ECAC Championship and to get the automotive qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. It s been a long season, but we re ready to keep playing and show everyone what Denver lacrosse is all about. Denver led 11-4 early in the fourth quarter before the Stags mounted their comeback with five consecutive goals to cut the deficit to two goals with 3:04 remaining. The Pioneers sealed the win as goaltender Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) stopped the Stags final two attempts on goal. ECAC Player of the Year Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario), sophomore Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.), senior Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and junior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) scored two goals each for Denver and Faus earned his 12th win of the season with 13 saves. Freshman Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario), sophomore Hayden Schuette (Encinitas, Calif.) and tournament MVP Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) also scored, while Carraro dominated face-offs by winning 16-of-22 draws. Max Trunz led Fairfield with three goals, while Nick Baglio, Matt Plominski, Doug Kuring, Sam Snow, Matt Lanzaro and John Snellman added goals for the Stags. Charlie Cipriano made 13 saves as Fairfield ends its season at 8-8. Denver held a 5-2 advantage after an entertaining first period. Law opened the scoring at 3:43 before Baglio tied it at 1-1 less than one minute later. Matthews scored back-to-back goals, followed by Noble and Demopoulos as the Pioneers outshot the Stags 8-4 in the first period. Baxter and Schuette scored goals in the second quarter to extend DU s lead to 7-2 at the half. Faus stopped all five Fairfield shots in the quarter. Law, Baxter and Carraro scored for Denver in the third quarter as the Pioneers held a commanding 10-3 lead. Plominski netted Fairfield s lone goal in the quarter. After a Demopoulos goal at 2:32 of the fourth quarter, Fairfield rallied with goals from Lanzaro, Snow, Trunz (2) and Snellman to make the final score Matthews, Baxter, Faus and Demopoulos joined Carraro on the all-tournament team. Tyler Frederick (Ohio State), Mike Sawyer (Loyola), Snellman, Cipriano, Trunz and Drew Palmer of Fairfield were also named to the team. TOP OF THE CLASS Coming into the 2011 season, Coach Tierney ranked second among active coaches and 11th all-time with a.743 winning percentage (284-98). Syracuse head coach John Desko topped the active coaches list with a.770 winning percentage (148-44) and was sixth all time. Coach Tierney also ranked fifth among active coaches for most career wins (284). PIONEERS PICKED FIRST In their first season as members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Pioneers captured the 2010 Regular Season Championship Title with a perfect 7-0 record. This season, the Pioneers were picked first in the ECAC preseason poll, as voted on by the league s seven head coaches. Behind Denver is Loyola, followed by Fairfield, Ohio State, Hobart, Air Force and Bellarmine. PRESEASON ECAC ACCOLADES Juniors Mark Matthews and Alex Demopoulos were both named to the Preseason All-ECAC team. Demopoulos earns the honor for the first time, while Matthews is tabbed for the second-straight season. Matthews was also picked as the Offensive Player of the Year, while freshman Jamie Faus was tabbed the Rookie of the Year. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Juniors Alex Demopoulos and Mark Matthews were selected to the 2011 Division I Preseason All-America Team by Inside Lacrosse, in their annual Face-Off Yearbook. Demopoulos was honored for the first time, while Matthews received the honor for the secondstraight season. Matthews was named an honorable mention selection heading into the 2010 season. VILLANOVA GAME RECAP - VILLANOVA AT DENVER (03/03/07) DU Beats Villanova in Double OT DENVER With No. 20 Denver trailing by one and only one tick remaining on the clock, John Dickenson (Dallas) scored a game-tying goal, and Dillon Roy (Denver) stole the ball and scored the game-winning in the second overtime, as DU beat Villanova Saturday afternoon in the Pioneers Face-Off Classic. Joey Murray (Denver) scored a sock trick with six goals, and one of his two assists was a feed to Dickenson to set up the goal at the end of regulation. Villanova (1-2) scored first at the 11:23 mark, but Denver (2-2) responded with three unanswered, a pair by Murray and one by Brad Richardson (Langley, British Columbia). The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run over the next six minutes, but Murray s hat-trick goal with just over a minute left in the first period left the Pioneers only a goal down.
