5 MOOVing Northwest for Dairy The next stop on our AG Mazing Race across the state of Louisiana is the northwest portion of our state. Parishes in this area include Natchitoches, Desoto, and Caddo. This area is the primary area for dairy production along with the southeast part of the state. Today, the size of dairy farms varies in the number of cows, but most are still family-owned. In Louisiana, the most common kind of dairy cow is the Holstein, which is black and white. How does dairy fit into MyPlate? You should get 3 servings of dairy a day. Milk is often referred to as nature s most perfect food. It contains almost every element needed in human diets. Try It At Home: Blueberry Blast Smoothie Ingredients: 1 ½ cups fresh or frozen blueberries 2 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt 1 ½ large bananas, peeled 3-4 cups ice Directions: To make the smoothie, blend the banana, the ice, and the yogurt together until well blended. Add the blueberries and blend on low speed for 30 seconds. Serve immediately. A serving size is ½ cup. This recipe makes 6 servings. This means that 6 people can enjoy this recipe. This treat contains 120 calories and 1 gram of fat.
