1 January th-6th Grade Edition Are YOU Ready? Fitness Challenge Coming Soon! We are inviting the community of St. Martin Parish (both youth and adults) to take part in a 5 week health challenge. More information will be coming soon! 4-H ers have been giving back to the community! Congratulations to Teche Elementary and Cecilia Junior High. Three 4-H members from those schools started a campaign to raise money for the Animal Shelter. Peter, Georgie, and Mary Harris organized a dress day and supply drive at their schools. They also held a bake sale at the City Wide Garage Sale. Through their efforts they raised over $1,208 and collected a car load of supplies to donate to the animal shelter. The puppies and kitties say they made an impact! Congratulations to St. Martinville 4th grade 4-H club for sponsoring a Pink Out jean day at school and raised $263 for Breast Cancer Awareness. Congratulations to Hands 4 Art club members who have made pumpkin pins and turkey table toppers for the St. Agnes Nursing Home residents in Breaux Bridge. Congratulations to everyone who donated to the Food For Families Food Drive. Each year 4-H members donations help over 300 needy people in our parish. Also, a BIG thank you to those 4-H members who volunteered at the collection sites. 4 4-H PORTFOLIO Information 4-H Portfolios will be given to 4-H members at the January club meetings. The portfolios are a record of your 4-H participation this year. Portfolios should be turned in if you want to attend Achievement Day which is tentatively scheduled to be held in May. Why do a portfolio? Writing things down helps us remember what s happening and what we need to do. 4-H portfolios are an important way to keep track of our 4-H experiences. Everyone feels good when portfolios are worked on throughout the year and completed by the deadline. It will be more fun and less frustrating if you spend some time each month on your portfolio. Records are a part of life. You ll have records related to your money, insurance, taxes and property. Pictures are fun records of what you ve done. You ll enjoy your pictures much more if they are organized in a way that you can find them easily. Doing a 4-H portfolio is a part of 4-H life that helps in many ways. Remember: 1: Competitive Deadline: 4-H members portfolios are due on February 28, 2014 if the 4-H member wants their book judged and to be considered for Outstanding Record Book Awards. (Agents will pick up these books at each school on February 28, 2014.) 2: Non-competitive deadline: Members who turn in books after February 28, 2014 are eligible to attend Achievement Day, but their book will not be judged and will not be considered for Outstanding Record Book awards. 4-H club leaders may ask for your book prior to February 28th. It is the responsibility of the 4-H club member to know when their school club leader wants the books! My club leader wants my books on: Some Hints for Developing Your Portfolio: 1. Be Neat. Use a pencil or computer to type information. Neat portfolios get higher scores! 2. Make sure your story is complete and long enough. You want to talk about yourself, your 4-H experience and your 4-H projects in your story. 3. Include pictures of you competing in 4-H contests, attending 4-H workshops and doing project book activities. Need pictures? We have a TON of pictures from all of our 4-H events on our Facebook page, St. Martin Parish 4-H. 4. Clip 4-H news articles and 4-H newsletter articles in which your name appeared from the Bayou Gazette newsletter or newspaper. Look on the St. Martin Parish 4-H Facebook page for articles as well. 5. Portfolios are more simple if you do them one section at a time. 6. ASK for HELP from club leader or 4-H agents. 7. Complete the new record sheet that is included in your portfolio. This page is for you to tell us what you learned and the activities you completed in your project book. Note: Due to construction at our office and lack of space, we are asking that you only turn in the 4-H portfolio this year, not the project book. You will be asked to turn in a record sheet with your portfolio to show us what you did in your project book this year. Questions: Call or hguidry@agcenter.lsu.edu. Shooting Sports News Shooting Sports is in full swing. Thanks to all of our coaches who volunteer their time and knowledge at each practice. You are appreciated. Congratulations to Elliott Bernard for being selected as a State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador! Congratulations to Tyra Mouton, Elliott Bernard, and Dustin Hayes who represented St. Martin Parish 4-H at National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA at the end of November. They received this trip for winning the state records competition this summer for their outstanding work in the outdoor skills and shooting sports projects.

9 Move 4 Health Corner Motion Commotion FEEL LIKE A MISFIT? Wanna focus on fitness? Are you a fast-paced thrill seeker or a cool competitor? What types of activities do you like to do? Take this six-point quiz at to find out what activities fit your personality to a "T". Once you find what activities fit your personality you will be ready to create your fitness plan. Get With the Plan In order to start creating your very own fitness plan, there are a few things you should know. Go with a plan: Decide ahead of time your activity plan for the week. Using the BAM! calendar, you can schedule all of your weekly activities and it'll be easier to stick to. Go for a goal: Start slowly and build up to a goal. It could be as easy as continuing to do the activities you're already doing just more often. Or you can pick a new activity and start working on it. Start with a goal of doing at least 60 minutes of activity a day. Track it: Check your progress by checking off your activities on the calendar after you're done. Reward yourself at the end of week for working so hard. Don't burn out before you even warm up: Too much of a good thing can be bad. Overloading your schedule can discourage you from meeting your goals and overdoing it is the quickest way to burn out. Mix it up: Include different types of activities in your plan. Doing the same thing everyday gets boring. There's a ton of other activities that are totally doable for you. Bringing along a buddy is also a surefire way to keep it fun. Pick activities that work different parts of the body. If you mostly do activities that require a lot of running, mix in some that build strength or help you be more flexible. Choose activities based on different types of weather or seasons. That way you can be active rain or shine, hot or cold. Anyway, we hear it's kinda hard to ice skate in June! Download the BAM!
