The year is halfway over! Haven t been as active as you wanted? Don t worry-there s still some pretty great activities planned. The Demonstration/Talk Contests will be held on January 21, 2013 (pre-registration is required-see December s gazette). Super Saturday Contest Day-Feb. 2, 2013 The 4-H Amazing Race-March 23, 2013 Achievement Day-April 18, 2013 (must turn in portfolio to attend) Portfolio Deadline Also, remember that your 4-H Portfolio (given out at club meetings in December) is due to your club leaders in mid-february. Ask your club leader when your book will be due. The final due date is March 1, Ms. Laura & Ms. Hope will pick up portfolios on March 1, 2013 from all schools. Outstanding Member Applications Also, on March 1, 2013 the Outstanding Club Member Applications will be due to the 4-H office. The Outstanding Club Member applications are used to choose outstanding club members from the St. Martin parish 4-H program who have been extremely active in the program. Applications will be given out at the January club meetings and can be found on our Facebook wall and parish website ( These outstanding club members are recognized at Honors Night in May. All who are invited will receive an invitation in the mail in late April. 4-H Pledge I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking my HEART to greater loyalty my HANDS to larger service and my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world. Thanks to all of the clubs that donated items to the Food for Families Food Drive. It all stays in St. Martin Parish! You are all appreciated! 2 Trivia Contest Question Each month, we will have a trivia question in our newsletter. If you are one of the first 5 members from your club to the correct answer to us, you will receive a prize at your next club meeting. 4-H January Trivia Question: Name three beef by-products from the list on the AgCellent Information page of the newsletter. December Correct Answer: Name the three (3) stages of the evergreen tree life cycle: 1) Cone 2) Seedlings 3) Tree us the answer along with your full name, the school you attend, and your grade level by 1/25/13 to: stmartin4h@yahoo.com Super Saturday Contest Day-February 2, 2013 St. Martin parish 4-H will hold its second big contest day of the year on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at BBHS. Super Saturday will include a variety of 4-H contests. Parents, you may bring lawn chairs to set out on the grounds while the contests are taking place as well as snacks for your family. You are expected to stay with your child throughout the day. Because of the numerous events being held at one time, the 4-H agents and volunteers will be busy conducting contests and cannot supervise youth. There will be a concession stand and 4-H store at the contest. You can buy snacks, drinks and cute 4-H items! Events Include: Bar B Que Chicken Contest Talent Show (pre-registration required) Ground Beef Cookery Contest Seafood Cookery Contest Commodity Ambassador Speech & Poster Contest (pre-registration required) Rabbit Show Please refer to the Super Saturday contest day rules and regulations packet for all rules and regulations for each contest. The packet was given out during the January 4-H club meetings. General Rules and Regulations for all contests: All contests are open to all 4-H members in St. Martin Parish as long as they meet the age requirements. 4-H ers will be allowed to enter any/all contests as times permits. For all contests except the Talent Show, contestants compete as an individual. All awards will be presented at the conclusion of each contest. Decisions of judges are final in each contest. Pre-Registration is required for the Commodity Ambassador Speech/ Poster contest. Club leaders will register all acts for the Talent Show.

3 Livestock News St. Martin Parish Livestock Show (January 11-12, 2013) SPRING LIVESTOCK SHOW DATES Acadiana District Livestock Show (January 23-26, 2013) LSU State Livestock Show in Gonzales, LA (February 9-16, 2013) Attention Rabbit Exhibitors: The St. Martin Parish 4-H Rabbit Show will be held at our Super Saturday contest day on Saturday, February 2nd at the Breaux Bridge High School Livestock Barn. Super Saturday Contest Rules & Regulations Packet was given out at the January 4-H club meetings. All Rabbit exhibitors were mailed information from the 4-H Office. Attention Poultry Exhibitors: The St. Martin Parish Poultry Premier Exhibitor contest will be held on February 5, The Parish Poultry Show will be held on February 6, 2013 at the Breaux Bridge High School Livestock Barn. More information will be given to poultry exhibitors at a later date. Shooting Sports News Shooting Sports Project Books: Registered participants received their Project Book at the mandatory Safety Meeting. Participants should begin working in these books now so that they can be turned in along with their portfolio and by the appropriate deadlines. IMPORTANT: REMEMBER: In order to participate in regional and/or state competitions, the participant must turn in their shooting sports project book and portfolio by the parish deadline & have acquired the minimum number of training/practice hours required for the event. Thanks to our new archery instructors who were recently trained: Larry Comeaux and James LaGrange. Character Corner-Trustworthiness As we start a new year, let s start on the right foot. Let s make the world a better place. One way to keep that promise is to practice the six pillars of character. January is the month for Trustworthiness. A trustworthy person is a person of integrity and one who stands up for his/her beliefs. If you are trustworthy, you follow your conscience. Always have the courage to do what is right and to try new things even when it s hard. Being trustworthy means always telling the truth and nothing but the truth. Be sincere. Don t lie, cheat, steal, or sneak. Just practice the pillars of character and start the year off right!

4 Agcellent Information-Wow That Cow! Beef Cattle are raised for more than just Beef-they provide many other products that we use daily from by-products. HISTORY of Beef Cattle in Louisiana Cattle-raising is one of the oldest agricultural enterprises in Louisiana, beginning in the early 1700s. The first cattle were brought here after trappers diminished the deer population. Our state s early cattle were longhorn Spanish cattle, Red Poll and the milking shorthorn. After World War I, cattlemen began specializing in some of the beef breeds they had seen overseas during the war. Today, Louisiana s cattle industry is growing. Today s cattlemen are raising lean, quality beef to meet consumer s demands. Beef is a primary source of heme-iron, an important dietary requirement. (From Louisiana Ag in the Classroom) The by-products we get from beef animals enable the industry to use 99 percent of every animal. Beef Cattle PRODUCTION Most people usually think of beef as a hamburger, steak or a delicious roast for a satisfying and nutritious meal. But there are some edible products that are not so obvious. Did you know that the gelatins in products such as ice cream and yogurt are made from the bones of the cow? The soap you washed your face with this morning; the baseball equipment in the closet; even the sheetrock in the walls of your home all of these contain beef by-products. By-products serve as a source material for hundreds of other industries. In other words, without beef as a renewable resource, not only would the butcher be out of work but also many other businesses. (From Louisiana Ag in the Classroom) Beef By-Products A beef by-product is the other products that are created from the animal after the primary product has been produced. Hide & Hair: Leather Case, Leather Belt, Soccer Ball, Baseball, Baseball Mitt, Paint Brush, Glue, Wallpaper, Building Installation, Emery Boards, Sandpaper, Plywood & Drywall, Paper Boxes and Linoleum Fats & Fatty Acids: Asphalt, Candles, Crayons, Toothpaste, Lipstick, Deodorant, Shampoo, Bar Soap, Laundry Soap, Floor Wax, Rubber Boots, Running Shoes, Tires, Blake Fluid and Car Polish & Wax Horns, Bones, Hooves and Blood: China Dishes, Dog Food, Printing Press, Comb, Fertilizer, Dog Bones, Fire Extinguisher Foam, Gelatin, Ice Cream, Camera Film, Jello, Gummy Candy, Jelly Beans, Marshmallows and Chewing Gum Organs & Glands: Racket Strings, Allergy Medicine, Vaccines, Prescription Medicines and Vitamins Homemade Bubbles Materials: 4 1/2 cups Water 1/2 cup Dishwashing Detergent 4 Tablespoons Glycerin (available at most pharmacies) Directions: 1. Measure the ingredients into a container. 2. Gently stir. If foam forms, gently skim it off. It is recommended that you let the mixture sit awhile before using. The longer you let the mix sit, the bigger the bubbles will be and the longer they will last. To make bubble wands, use your imagination. Make big circles by using the wire clothes hangers. Shape pipe cleaners into circles. Use anything round that you can blow air through. In this bubble recipe, some of the ingredients are beef by-products. Both the glycerin and detergent contain beef by-products. Beef by-products enable us to use 99% of every beef animal. 5 Clovers To: Clovers to all of the clubs that participated in the Food for Families Food Drive on December 5, We are proud that you represented St. Martin Parish 4-H. Clovers to all of the 4-H members who helped take in and sort the Food that was collected for the Food for Families Food Drive on December 5, 2012 at the Veterans home in Breaux Bridge. Many of you were a great help! Clovers to Jeffrey Boudreaux who represented St. Martin Parish 4-H and the Jr. Leader club by presenting Ms. Hazel Theriot a donation from the Jr. Leader club on a live broadcast on KLFY TV10. Clovers to Ms. Hazel Theriot who coordinates the food drive each year. Clovers to Parks Middle school 4-H clubs who visited the nursing home in December. Clovers to St. Martinville Elementary 4-H clubs who collected things for the nursing home in December. Clovers to Cecilia Jr. High clubs and Teche clubs who went caroling at the nursing home in December. Try This-Lean Green Pita Dippers Prep time: 10 minutes How much does this recipe make? 4 servings What you need: 4 whole-wheat pitas 1 cup fat-free plain Greek yogurt ½ cup fresh or frozen spinach ¼ of cucumber, sliced pinch of salt ½ teaspoon black pepper Equipment needed: -Food processor or blender -Knife -Baking sheet From: pita_dip.html#cat20229 What to do: 1-Preheat oven to 400 F. 2-Have an adult help you with this step: Place yogurt, spinach, cucumber, salt, and pepper into food processor or blender. Process until smooth, about 1 minute. 3-Place dip into a bowl and refrigerate until chips are done. 4-Cut pitas into 8 wedges. 5-Arrange pita wedges on a baking sheet in a single layer. 6-Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle lightly with garlic powder. 7-Bake for 5 minutes or until light golden brown and crispy. 8-Use the pita wedges to scoop up the yogurt dip!
