2 Fall Fest Contest Day-October 12, 2013 All 4-H members are invited to join us at the 1st contest day of the year, 2013 Fall Fest Contest Day! Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the 4-H office in Breaux Bridge. (114 Courthouse Street, Breaux Bridge, LA next door to the Breaux Bridge Public Library) There will be a concession stand & 4-H store at Fall Fest opening at 9:30 am! Contests that will be offered include: Pet Show (dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, oh my!) Pumpkin Decorating Contest Sugar Cookery Contest Rice Cookery Contest Need ideas? Ms. Hope and Ms. Laura hope to see you at Fall Fest Contest Day on October 12, Arts & Crafts Project Club-October 24, 2013 All 4th-6th grade 4-H members are invited to join the Hands 4 Art Project Club on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm at Parks Middle School in Parks, LA (1010 St. Louis Drive, Parks, LA 70582). The cost is $5.00, which will be paid at the meeting. Pre-Register for the meeting by ing stmartin4h@yahoo.com or calling by October 18, 2013, telling us your name. All children being dropped off MUST be signed in by an adult and signed out when being picked up. The youth should be able to give us an emergency phone number. Remember, all youth should be picked up by 4:30 pm sharp. Join us for some spooky craft projects to get us in the October holiday season. 3 Catch Phrase for Camp Contest Think you have the perfect theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Believe it is catchy and captures the spirit of 4-H and Camp Grant Walker? If so, then send your creative slogan in seven (7) words or less and illustration to the 4-H Office by October 25 th. All entries should be placed on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and catchy, capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan and illustration will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt. The winner will receive a monetary award from the LAE 4-HA (LA. Assoc. of Extension 4-H Agents). Think fast the deadline is October 25, Submissions must also include the following: Full name and age of person submitting the slogan Parish/4-H Club Complete mailing address Telephone number All entries will be submitted for judging to the LAE4-HA Ways and Means Committee and the 4-H Camp Staff. After final selection the winner will be notified and asked to sign a release for the slogan to be used in all publicity for the camp as well as on the T-shirt. Both the 4-H er and parent/guardian must sign the release. Deadline for receipt of entries is Friday, October 25th. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION! Broiler Chick Orders-Due November 1, H Broiler Project It s time again to place your order for broiler chicks! The broiler project is open to all 4-H members. In this project, you purchase broiler chicks from the 4-H Office and raise them to show at parish and state shows. To order your chicks, send in the completed order form and a payment of 50 cents ($.50) per chick to the 4-H Office by November 1, You should order at least 10 chicks because you will select your best 3 for the parish show in February Your chicks will be available for pick-up in early January. More information will be mailed to those who order broiler chicks once we receive the order forms. Note: All 4-H ers will be allowed to show at our parish broiler show, but only members who will be at least nine years old by 12/31/13 will be allowed to show their broilers at the State Livestock Show. 4 Fun Day-November 26, H Fun Day is for 3rd-6th grade 4-H members who want to learn about fitness & health! The workshop will be held at St. Bernard School on November 26, 2013 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Make plans to attend this fun day led by high school 4-H members! 5 Essay Contest for Food & Fitness Camp Would you like to be selected to attend the H Food & Fitness Family camp? We are sponsoring one team of a youth and adult family member to attend the 2014 food & fitness family camp on February 22-23, What will you do at the camp? You will stay in a cabin at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. While at camp you and your adult family member will do hands-on workshops on the topics of nutrition, food safety, food preparation, and healthy living. Also, you will be moving with physical fitness activities and recreation, with a special evening program featuring a colorful MyPlate walk! To select a team, we are holding an essay contest. The essay topic is: How does my family incorporate health and fitness into our lives? (Tell what your family does to stay active, to encourage each other to be healthy, and how do you incorporate MyPlate into your meal plan.) The essay cannot be longer than one page and must be written or typed by the 4-H member. You can your entry to: stmartin4h@yahoo.com or mail it to the 4-H office at 114 Courthouse Street, Breaux Bridge, LA You can also drop off your essay at the 4-H office from 8:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. All entries must be turned in by October 25, The essay must include the following: 4-H ers Full Name, Adult Family Member s Full Name that will be attending camp if youth is chosen, Grade, School/Club name, birthdate, address, and telephone number. Note: The youth s adult family member attending the camp will have to complete an online 4-H overnight chaperone program and will be responsible for transportation to and from camp and provide supervision while at camp. The winning youth must be accompanied by an adult to attend camp. 6 Shooting Sports News Did you enroll in the Shooting Sports project? If so, you will be placed on our mailing list and will receive important information through the mail about registering for the shooting sports program. This packet will also include the calendar with the practice schedules and match dates. Please note that the registration forms that you receive through the mail will be due to the 4 -H Office by October 16th along with your non-refundable fees. Livestock News Livestock project activities are starting as exhibitors purchase animals and begin to prepare for show season! Below are many important dates for livestock exhibitors and their families. Good luck with your projects. Livestock participants will be receiving important information in the mail in the near future about completing the REQUIRED LSU AgCenter s Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification program. Completed hardship forms must be completed and in the 4-H Office by the animal s possession date. This rule is to insure that 4-H members are working with their projects.

7 Moving 4-HEALTH! MyPlate Champ! Be a MyPlate Champion! How? Visit the following website: Champion.html Pledging to be a MyPlate Champion is a promise to eat healthy and be active every day. Learning how to make healthy choices at home and at school is an important part of taking care of you. The first step is to know which choices are best for you. Use ideas from the list on the webpage to get started. After reading the list, if you can pledge to eat healthy and be active, you have what it takes to be a MyPlate Champion! On the website, press the MyPlate button to personalize and print your own MyPlate Champion certificate. You can include this certificate in your 4-H Portfolio you will receive in January! 4-H ers in the Kitchen-Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Perfect for snack time, roasting your own pumpkin seeds is simple, tasty and fun. We give you a few options for spicing up these crunchy goodies, or feel free to make your own spice combinations. Makes about 2 cups. Ingredients: 1 medium pumpkin 4 cups water 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Method: (Kids need parents help here.) Preheat oven to 250 F. Cut off top 3 to 4 inches of pumpkin then scoop out seeds onto a clean work surface. Discard stringy fiber from seeds along with any seeds that are split or cracked then transfer to a strainer and rinse well. (You should have about 2 cups of seeds.) In a medium pot, bring water to a boil. Add seeds, reduce heat and boil gently for 10 minutes. Drain well then transfer to a paper towel-lined sheet tray and pat dry. Transfer seeds to a medium bowl, toss with oil and spread out in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Roast seeds, stirring every 10 minutes or so, until just crisp and golden brown, about 1 hour total. (They will become crispier as they cool.) Set aside to let cool completely then shell or eat whole. For spicy pumpkin seeds, mix 1/2 teaspoon each garlic salt, cumin, coriander and cardamom with seeds and oil before roasting. For sweet pumpkin seeds, mix 1 teaspoon each ground cinnamon, cloves and ginger and 1 1/2 tablespoons dark brown sugar with seeds and oil before roasting.
