2 Fall Fest Contest Day-October 12, 2013 All 4-H members are invited to join us at the 1st contest day of the year, 2013 Fall Fest Contest Day! Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the 4-H office in Breaux Bridge. 3 Jr. Leader Meeting-October 14, 2013 Thanks to everyone who came to Mess Fest on September 23rd! The next Jr. Leader Meeting will be held on Monday, October 14, 2013 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm at the 4-H Office. Come dressed in your favorite costume (make sure it is 4-H appropriate) and compete for the best costume and other prizes. Didn t make it to Mess Fest-its okay-you are always welcome to attend Jr. Leader meetings. Bring a friend! All 7th-12th graders are welcome to join. Don t forget to have someone pick you up at 7:00 pm sharp and everyone MUST be signed out by whomever is picking you up. How to stay CONNECTED? St. Martin Parish 4-H offers lots of opportunities throughout the year. How can you keep up with all of the events? The parish program is also connected through social media. Search St. Martin 4-H! Catch Phrase for Camp Contest Think you have the perfect theme for 4 -H Summer Camp? Believe it is catchy and captures the spirit of 4-H and Camp Grant Walker? If so, then send your creative slogan in seven (7) words or less and illustration to the 4-H Office by October 25 th. All entries should be placed on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and catchy, capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan and illustration will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt. The winner will receive a monetary award from the LAE 4-HA (LA. Assoc. of Extension 4-H Agents). Think fast the deadline is October 25, Submissions must also include the following: Full name and age of person submitting the slogan Parish/4-H Club Complete mailing address Telephone number All entries will be submitted for judging to the LAE4-HA Ways and Means Committee and the 4-H Camp Staff. After final selection the winner will be notified and asked to sign a release for the slogan to be used in all publicity for the camp as well as on the T-shirt. Both the 4-H er and parent/guardian must sign the release. Deadline for receipt of entries is Friday, October 25th. 4 Broiler Chick Orders-Due November 1, H Broiler Project It s time again to place your order for broiler chicks! The broiler project is open to all 4-H members. In this project, you purchase broiler chicks from the 4-H Office and raise them to show at parish and state shows. To order your chicks, send in the completed order form and a payment of 50 cents ($.50) per chick to the 4-H Office by November 1, You should order at least 10 chicks because you will select your best 3 for the parish show in February Your chicks will be available for pick-up in early January. More information will be mailed to those who order broiler chicks once we receive the order forms. Note: All 4-H ers will be allowed to show at our parish broiler show, but only members who will be at least nine years old by 12/31/13 will be allowed to show their broilers at the State Livestock Show. Healthy Mentors Needed This year we are creating a Food & Fitness Project Club for 4th-6th grade 4-H ers. We are in need of Healthy Mentors to help with club meeting activities for this club. The first meeting will be held in November. The time commitment will be about 2.5 hours per month. All 7th-12th grade 4-H ers are eligible to become healthy mentors. A Healthy Mentor will help teach lessons at the Food & Fitness Project club meetings and serve as mentors to the youth in the club. A Healthy Mentor must be committed to living a healthy life and be in good standing at their school. 5 Shooting Sports News Did you enroll in the Shooting Sports project? If so, you will be placed on our mailing list and will receive important information through the mail about registering for the shooting sports program. This packet will also include the calendar with the practice schedules and match dates. Please note that the registration forms that you receive through the mail will be due to the 4 -H Office by October 16th along with your non-refundable fees. Livestock News Livestock project activities are starting as exhibitors purchase animals and begin to prepare for show season! In a word: enthusiasm. Enthusiasm can mean the difference in not just getting a job, but succeeding in a job and even advancing in your career. A positive and enthusiastic attitude is a critical component of workplace success. When employers look at prospective candidates, beyond skills, experience, and training, they look for those who demonstrate enthusiasm those they believe will complete assigned tasks in an upbeat and cooperative manner. All other things being equal, a candidate who can demonstrate a positive attitude and eagerness to tackle the job will have an advantage over one who displays an attitude viewed by the employer as negative or disinterested. In fact, many employers would rather provide job skills training to an enthusiastic but inexperienced worker than hire someone with perfect qualifications but a less-than-positive attitude. Managers sometimes worry that this type of person will not get along with supervisors and co-workers, treat customers disrespectfully, and not put much effort into his or her work. On the other hand, employees who are viewed as enthusiastic are known to provide good customer service, resolve interpersonal conflict effectively, and work productively with others. Having a positive attitude in the workplace can help with potential promotions. Employers promote employees who not only produce, but also motivate others in the workplace. Life is Full of Hard Knocks THE ROAD TO SUCCESS IS PAVED WITH FAILURE. JUST THE FACTS: Failing is a part of life. In fact, it accounts for many, many successes for without failing, success is almost impossible. Learning how to bounce back from failure is not always easy, but it is necessary. Enthusiasm for goal attainment is a necessary characteristic for success. This activity helps participants understand that failure is not something to fear and in fact often a necessary step on the path to success. Success or Failure?
