A NTHONY TROLLOPIi, in his description of the Hwkesbury River declres tht it e.xcels in beuty the Rhine nd the Mississippi, it might be well to quote him in order to drw specil ttention to the beuties of this river nd its outlet : "There cn, I think, be no doubt tht mong rivers the Rhine hs the highest chrcter for sustined beuty. There my be specil points on other strems which hve endered themselves to the world such especilly s the I'lls of Nigr, the Inn t Insprtick, or the Rhone t Genev, or the Upper Lke of Killrney. Hut for continued scenery the Rhine stnds first. There is river, or rther portion of river, known to very few tourists, which, I think, bets the Rhine. This is the Upper Mississippi, for bout 150 miles below St. Pul's. It is not my business here to describe the Mississippi, but I mention it with the object of sying tht in my opinion the Hwkesbury bets the Mississippi." It is, however, the beuties of Broken By, nd its mny inlets into which the Hwkesbury Hows fter its journey of 330 miles, with whicli we intend to del.

Being pddle stemers of lrge bem nd consequently ffording mple deck room, they re specilly dpted for this clss of trffic, the regulrity of the service throughout the summer months ensuring lrge nd incresing ptronge. The "Newcstle" leves Sydney every Sturdy fternoon t 2 o'clock during the summer months, nd on holidys either the "Newcstle" or "Nmoi" run full dys' excursion to Broken By. After leving Sydney Heds, run of i6 miles, occupying bout I hour 15 minutes, brings us to Brrenjoey, the southern hedlnd of the entrnce to Broken By. On turning into the By fine stretch of wter is opened up on the left, clled Pitt Wter, which is entered, nd fter plesnt run of bout five miles, pssing Coreel By on our left, Scotlnd Islnd is reched, where the stemer comes slowly round on her helm, while excursionists hve good view of Newport nd the prettily situted vills on the wter's edge of Crr's Creek nd Lovett By, which re on our left; nd, s the return trip is mde, Towler's By, Long Nose nd Coster's Retret re pssed, nd Mt. Elliott (or Lion Islnd), comes into view, nd Brrenjoey is gin rounded for the run home, pssing the Hole in the Wll, Bungn, Turrimett nd Nrrbeen Heds, when the pines long the shore t Mnly come into view, with the Crdinl's Plce on the heights. North Hed is gin pssed nd excursionists re lnded t the whrf, fter bout 4^ hours run. The trip round Scotlnd Islnd is very fvorite one but is only mde when the tide llows the " Newcstle " to pss over the br t the entrnce to Pitt Wter.

Insted of turning into Pitt Wter our course lys south-west until Jun Hed is reched, bout four miles from Brrenjoey, when the course is ltered to north-west, nd Dngr Islnd nd the gret rilwy bridge crossing the Hwkesbury River comes into view. Dngr Islnd is slowly rounded, excur sionists being fforded good view of the Hwkesbury River, bridge nd rilwy sttion. On the return journey Green Point nd Elenor Bluff re pssed in the strbord bow nd Brrenjoey gin comes into view. Perhps the most chrming trip is the one to Co\sn Creek (if wter 90 to 100 feet deep cn be clled creek.) After entering Broken B^y, Jun Hed nd Elenor Bluff come into view, with Chllenger Hed nd Re;fuge By on the left. Little Shrk Rock nd Jeruslem By being on the right. Here Shrk Rock Point is pssed, Yeomn's By, Col nd Cndle Creek nd Smith's Creek (both creeks being nvigble for some distnce hving considerble depth of wter), being pssed on the right. Wrth By nd Windibnk's Housebots re then pssed on the right, nd Cown Creek continues to Bobbin Point, where it divides into two strems, one being clled Cockle or Gibbergong Creek. The Compny hold lese from the Kuring-gi Chse trustees for bout three cres of lnd t Shrk Rock Point. A lnding plce h^is been formed nd mooring piles plced. Our illustrtion shows the " Nmoi " nd " Newcstle " t this whrf, both stemers hving lnded bout 1700 excursionists on King's Birthdy, The " Newcstle " brought excursionists from Newcstle, the " Nmoi " excursionists from Sydney. At intervls excursionists re lnded on holidys t Coreel By or Newport. At Coreel By the Compny hve erected

The site is most suitble one ; the lnd t the bck of it being n idel picnic spot, with sndy bech nd within esy wlking distnce of the ocen bech; nrrow neck of lnd seprting Pitt Wter from the ocen. PORT HACKING. While most excursionists on the holidy rush to Cown, Coreel, or Newport, not few would be disppointed if n opportunity ws not fforded of \'isiting Port Hcking, with its shdy nooks nd pietty beches. Our course is southwrd fter leving Sydney Heds, pssing I)ondi nd Coogee, the nfjrthern nd southern heds of Botny By (Cpe Bnks nd Cpe Solnder) re reched. Cronull Bech then comes into view, Port Hcking Point is sighted, nd the port is entered, exctirsionists being lnded t substntil whrf t, perhps, one of the prettiest lnding plces on the cost. Excursionists, who hve not yet visited Port Hcking, re recommended to vil themselves of the opportunity of doing so. It is in close pro.ximity to the Ntionl Prk. PORT STEPHENS. While Sydney e.xcursionists ii\'e the opportunity of visiting ISroken F)y ntl Port Hcking, Newcstle holidy seekers hve little choice of ocen excursions ; but the run to Port Stephens of bout 25 miles is certinly most enjoyble one. The course from Newcstle is north, the Bight the grve of so mny siling vessels in the pst is pssed on the left, nd fter run of few miles. Port Stephens is reched, nd the course lid for Toomeree Hed, the southern hedlnd o' Port Stephens, the northern hedlnd being clled Ycb Hed. Excursionists, s rule, re lnded t Nelson's By

This would enble regulr excursions being run, nd plesureseekers lnded without the risk of trnshipment, nd in the bush where few hours could be enjoybly spent " while the billy boils." THE HUNTER, PATERSON AND WILLIAMS RIVERS. For those in serch of quiet spot wherein to spend n inexpensive restful holidy, no better district could be nmed thn the rich griculturl loclities mentioned bove. The Newcstle nd Hunter River Compny's stemers, it might be mentioned here, re ech certified to ccomodte between 300 nd 400 pssengers t se. These stemers leve Sydney nightly (Sundy excepted), connecting with river stemers leving on certin dys (see Guide), for the Pterson nd Willims rivers, both of which re picturesque strems. Pterson township on the Pterson, nd Clrence Town on the Willims, re the terminl ports on ech of these rivers. Relible informtion is contined in this guide s to hotel ccommodtion, lso s to coches between these plces nd Mitlnd. It will be sufficient to stte here tht the districts re well worth visit; tht the rods re especilly suitble for cycling nd driving, nd tht those wishing to spend holidy in rich griculturl nd dirying district, where plenty of fishing nd shooting re vilble, could not do better thn spend week or two in the loclities mentioned.
