1 ASA 106: Advanced Castal Cruising Curriculum This curse will teach yu t sail a 30 t 50 ft bat in any weather cnditins during day and night as bth skipper and crew n castal and inland waters. Pre-study is vital t the success f yur curse. There will be tw tests fr this curse, ne perfrmance and ne written. Upn successful cmpletin f this curse yu will receive yur American Sailing Assciatin, Advanced Castal Cruising certificatin. Listed belw are the standards set by the American Sailing Assciatin which yu will have mastered upn successful cmpletin f the curse. Prerequisites: Basic Keelbat Sailing, Basic Castal Cruising, Barebat Chartering and Castal Navigatin Certificatin Descriptin: Able t safely act as skipper and crew f a sailing vessel abut 30 t 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in castal and inland water, in any weather.

2 SAILING KNOWLEDGE A Certified Sailr has successfully demnstrated his r her ability t: 1. Describe the thery f true and apparent wind. 2. Describe the thery f sailing using frce diagrams. Graphically find the center f effrt and center f resistance f sails and keel, respectively. 3. Describe with the aid f diagrams the causes f lee and weather helm and methds f crrecting them. Include the reasns fr preference f slight weather helm, sail selectin (including full sails r reefed sails), mast psitin and mast rake. 4. Describe sail shapes and sail interactins as needed fr different wind strengths and pints f sail. SAILING SKILLS Bat Handling Under Sail (by Day and Night, 30 hurs minimum ASA instructinal prgram) A Certified Sailr has successfully demnstrated his r her ability t: 34. Act as helmsman and demnstrate the prper techniques f beating, reaching, running, tacking, jibing, heading up, heading dwn (bearing away) and luffing in apprximately 20 knts f wind. 35. Wrk t weather t best advantage using wind shifts, tides and lcal gegraphy. 36. Sail a cmpass curse (within 10 degrees) with sails trimmed. 37. Demnstrate crrect methds f twing a dinghy. 38. Prperly carry ut nighttime man verbard prcedures. 39. Demnstrate crrect prcedures fr histing, setting, trimmings, jibing, dusing and packing a spinnaker.*
