2 Page 2 R1346A BndMaster HSC Rewrk System Unpacking the BandMaster The HSC 9000 BndMaster has been securely packaged in a rbust custm designed cntainer with inserts separating and prtecting each cmpnent. On the utside f the cntainer will be registered the Mdel Number f the BandMaster and the Vltage. If yu have rdered an accessry such as a Micrscpe r X-Y Table, this will als be registered. Fllw these simple steps t guide yu thrugh unpacking yur BndMaster safely: 1. Unseal the cntainer, ensuring that the arrws n the side f the case pint upwards. 2. 3 HSC Rewrk System R1J46A BndMaster Installing the BndMaster Page 3 1. Check that the wrk bench is sturdy and level. 2. Ensure that a pwer supply is available (11OVACr 220VAC),and that the main pwer is ff. 3. Cnnect the Ft Pedal and AC pwer crd t rear f the machine and cnnect the pwer crd t the AC supply. 4. Cnnect the halgen light and ptinal MasterLens t the sckets prvided. 5. Check that the Ft Pedal/ Cntinuus switch is in Ft Pedal mde. 6. Ensure that the Heating Element is in place within the Bnd Head, the element is designed t carry the thermal lad f the Bnd Head and must be inserted t avid failure r degradatin. 7. Turn ON the main supply. 8. Turn ON the BndMaster main supply switch, the digital cntrller will cnduct a Self Test and then display the ambient temperature f the Bnd Head in RED and the Set Pint bnd temperature in GREEN. 9. Place the Ft Pedal/Cntinuus switch t the Cntinuus mde t test the Bnd Head heating element and nte the ambient temperature in the red display begin t ramp. Cntinue until the display reads 250 F 121 C, then switch back t Ft Ped~1 mde Press the Ft Pedal mmentarily then release t test that the temperature cycle starts by nting when the ambient temperature begins t ramp. PID Cntrller Three thermavtemperature prfiles have been pre-laded and are ready Imprtant: D nt switch ff the BandMaster until the display registers under 110 F (43 C) as this will rapidly degrade heater life. Cntrller t g fr Brav and ther pagers, with an additinal prfile allcated fr future prducts. D nt change any field within the cntrller until yu are familiar with it's peratin. 11. Pressing the "INDEX" key n the cntrller nce will display the Bnd Time as "t1", the pager bnd time 1:45 minutes has been factry set as a default and is recmmended fr mst applicatins, hwever it may be changed by using the "UP" and "DOWN" arrws, press "ENTER" t save a new time. 12. Press "INDEX" again t step t the Bnd Prfile "Prf", the default prfile is #1, and may be changed frm 1 thru 4 using the same prcedure as changing time but we recmmend that Prfile #1 is used. 13. Press "INDEX" again t display the Bnd TemperatureISPI which can be changed as abve, the prefix in ISPI indicates the prfile number, we recmmend yu use the factry set temperature. 14. 4 Page 4 HSC Rewrk System R1346A BndMaster Universal Pager Bnding Fixture Kit The Basic BndMaster system des nt include the ptinal Universal Pager Fixture Kit.The BndMaster will accmmdate all Mtrla pager fixtures, r the user may decide t fabricate a special assembly. The ptinal tw piece Universal Pager Fixture Kit is supplied banded and assembled fr Bravtype pagers (the band must be remved befre use). The Base Blck (gld) supplied with the BndMaster supprts the kit, which includes an Intermediate Spacer (gld) and the tp Universal Pager Fixture (black), rientated fr Brav pagers. Als included are tw sets f lcatin pins, silver and gld, which are clr cded fr use with different pager types. The Mem Supprt Pins are black. The Universal Pager Fixture Kit will retain the pager and display assembly nce the HSC/LCD has been aligned using the crrect lcatin pins and the anti-static thermal bnding insulating tape supplied. See next page. Once the pager and display are securely taped, the Base Blck can be mved t the Bnding Dcklcatin under the Bnding Head. 5 HSC Rewrk System R1346A BndMaster Align-ing the Pager Page 5 The fllwing steps prepare fr the bnding prcess, using the Universal Pager Bnding Fixture: Munt the Universal Paging Fixture and Base Blck at the Assembly Dck lcatin (see previus page). Select the crrect Bnding Anvil fr the pager.the fixture is supplied with "Anvil A" in psitin fr Brav pagers. When it is necessary t select "Anvil B" the fixture shuld be rtated 180 degrees n the Intermediate Spacer and the crrect hles aligned t the Intermediate Spacer pins by the Lcatin Arrws marked n the fixture. If the wrng pins are selected then the display will nt register t the Bnding Head when in the Bnding Dck lcatin. The silver tling pins are used fr Brav and the gld pins are fr Brav Express pager types. Lcate the pager in the fixture using the apprpriate pins, see illustratin at left. Lay the LCD n a clean flat surface with the side t be bnded t the cnnectr facing dwn. The tp surface, which will cntact the Bnding Head, is facing up. Dispense and cut a 3 inch piece f Bnding Tape and lay the tape ver the HSC material end, ensure there is sufficient tape t capture the pager and that there are n wrinkles befre pealing the assembly frm the surface. Carefully align the taped HSC traces f the LCD t the finger cntacts f the pager supprted in the fixture. Press and secure, then add an additinal layer f tape. 6 Page 6 R1346A BndMaster HSC Rewrk System Bnding Prcess The bjective f the tape preparatin and alignment prcedure ISnt nly t secure the aligned assembly, but t als prevent tne Bnding Head sticking t the flexible circuit curing the bnd prcess and t insulate the circuit frm the Bnd Head. It als allws fr a linear distributin f pressure thrughut the flexible circuit as the cnductive epxy reaches reflw and changes shape t cnfrm t the Bnd Head. Once aligned and secured, mve the entire Universal Pager Fixture Kit, with the installed assembly,t the Bnding Dck under the Bnding Head. Secure the rll pins in the lcatin hles. The Pager is nw ready fr the bnding prcess. The BndMaster is supplied with crrect pressure tensin adjustment fr anstrpic and planer paqers.the crrect prcedure fr alignmg and Head,, Bnd Blade / HSC Bnd Head t Fixture adjusting pressure fr Mem Express (mnstrpic) is supplied with the fixture. Slwl mve the Bnding Lever dwn until It cntacts the anti-static tape and lcks int psitin. ) Pager Lcated in. ~ Fixture Depress the ft pedal t activate the temperature cycle. The Set Pint (green display) will cnvert t the digital timer and cunt dwn frm the preset time t zer. When the Timer reaches zer, disengage the ft pedal and immediately release the lever and allw the pager and display t cl befre remving. The technlgies vary but bth require a similar preparatin. Mylar technlgy is recgnized by the presence f slder. The HSC (Heat Sealed Cnnectr) are flexible circuits which have cnductive traces filled with cnductive epxy.the technlgy was develped t prvide a quick and effective prcess fr cnnecting a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) t printed circuit bards. There are three variants f this technlgy, which ffer different electricaf, mechanical and perfrmance characteristics. Mnstrpic - Is used fr Fine Pitch prjects f O.22mmand abve. The materials cntain gld and nickel particles ffering very lw electrical resistance. Its typical yellw appearance derives frm the titanium dixide used in the thermset adhesive cating prcess. BEFORE ~ ~ ~f ~, Tpager Insulatr Cnductive AFTER Fingers Epxy Cnductive Pager Epxy Fingers Insulatr Bnd CLEANING Anstrpic - A lw cst material yielding reliable bnd cnnectins, filled with gld plated nickel particles and fund n mst pagers, replacing Planar in many instances. N metal particles are included and it is mre ften being replaced by Anstrpic materials. Bnding all three f these materials requires temperature, pressure and time. The illustratin at left shws the characteristics f each material. Nte the perating envelpe fr each type. PAGER PREPARATION MylarTechnlgy Mylar slderedflexible circuits are remvedusing a sldering irn, reflwing each cnnectinas the circuit is gently peeled away frm the bard. T prepare the new LCD circuit, simply apply a bead f n-clean slder paste reference E72 acrss the new cnnectr pads, then reflw the paste with a temperature cntrlled sldering irn R1343A. After reflw (tinning), add a bead f n-clean flux reference E71 acrss the pads. All necessary tls are fund in the SMT Tl Kit reference E45. HSC Technlgy Remve the HSC circuit by grasping the LCD and gently peeling the flexible circuit frm the pager bard. If.it is necessary t calibrate the system, simply reset the lcatin as fllws: Raise Pressure Wheel and Bnd Head by turning wheel in directin f arrw in Figure A.
