7 . INTRODUCTION EVD evoluion is a driver for double pole sepper moors designed o conrol he elecronic expansion valve in refrigeran circuis. I is designed for DIN rail assembly and is fied wih plug-in screw erminals. I conrols refrigeran superhea and opimises he efficiency of he refrigeran circui, guaraneeing maximum flexibiliy, being compaible wih various ypes of refrigerans and valves, in applicaions wih chillers, air-condiioners and refrigeraors, he laer including subcriical and ranscriical CO sysems. I feaures low superhea (LowSH), high evaporaion pressure (MOP), low evaporaion pressure (LOP) and high condensing emperaure proecion (HiTcond) (also for CO cascade sysems), and can manage, as an alernaive o superhea conrol, special funcions such as he ho gas bypass, he evaporaor pressure conrol (EPR) and conrol of he valve downsream of he gas cooler in ranscriical CO circuis. In he versions for CAREL valves, if inegraed wih a specific CAREL pco conroller via LAN, he driver can conrol one of he following: an elecronic expansion valve in a refrigeran circui wih Emerson Climae Technologies Digial Scroll compressor; an elecronic expansion valve in a refrigeran circui wih BLDC compressor. In his case he compressor mus be conrolled by he CAREL Power+ speed drive (wih inverer), his in urn conneced o he pco conroller. The EVD evoluion driver can conrol an elecronic expansion valve in a refrigeran circui wih Digial Scroll compressor, if inegraed wih a specific CAREL conroller via LAN. In addiion, i feaures adapive conrol ha can evaluae he effeciveness of superhea conrol and if necessary acivae one or more uning procedures. Togeher wih superhea conrol, i can manage an auxiliary conrol funcion seleced beween condensing emperaure proecion and modulaing hermosa. As regards nework conneciviy, he driver can be conneced o eiher of he following: a pco programmable conroller o manage he conroller via plan, LAN and R85/Modbus ; a PlanVisorPRO supervisor via R85/Modbus. In his case, On/Off conrol is performed via digial inpu or, if suiably configured. As well as conrol sar/sop, digial inpus and can be configured for he following: - opimised valve conrol afer defros; - Valve forced open (00%); - conrol backup; - conrol safey. The second digial inpu is available for opimised defros managemen. Anoher possibiliy involves operaion as a simple posiioner wih o 0 ma or 0 o 0 Vdc analogue inpu signal. EVD evoluion comes wih a LED board o indicae he operaing saus, or a graphic display (accessory) ha can be used o perform insallaion, following a guided commissioning procedure involving seing jus parameers: refrigeran, valve, pressure probe, ype of main conrol (chiller, showcase, ec.). The procedure can also be used o check ha he probe and valve moor wiring is correc. Once insallaion is complee, he display can be removed, as i is no necessary for he operaion of he driver, or alernaively kep in place o display he significan sysem variables, any alarms and when necessary se he conrol parameers. The driver can also be seup using a compuer via he service serial por. In his case, he VPM program (Visual Parameer Manager) needs o be insalled, downloadable from hp://ksa.carel.com, and he USB-LAN converer EVDCNV00E0 conneced. Only on R85/ Modbus models can he insallaion procedure be managed as described above by compuer, using he serial por (see paragraph.8) in place of he service serial por. The universal models can drive all ypes of valves, while he CAREL models only drive CAREL valves.. The following paragraphs explain all he ypes of conrol ha can be se on EVD evoluion. 5. Superhea conrol The primary purpose of he elecronic valve is ensure ha he flow-rae of refrigeran ha flows hrough he nozzle corresponds o he flow-rae required by he compressor. In his way, he evaporaion process will ake place along he enire lengh of he evaporaor and here will be no liquid a he oule and consequenly in he branch ha runs o he compressor. As liquid is no compressible, i may cause damage o he compressor and even breakage if he quaniy is considerable and he siuaion lass some ime. Superhea conrol The parameer ha he conrol of he elecronic valve is based on is he superhea emperaure, which effecively ells wheher or no here is liquid a he end of he evaporaor. The superhea emperaure is calculaed as he difference beween: superheaed gas emperaure (measured by a emperaure probe locaed a he end of he evaporaor) and he sauraed evaporaion emperaure (calculaed based on he reading of a pressure ransducer locaed a he end of he evaporaor and using he Tsa(P) conversion curve for each refrigeran). Superhea= Superheaed gas emperaure(*) Sauraed evaporaion emperaure (*) sucion If he superhea emperaure is high i means ha he evaporaion process is compleed well before he end of he evaporaor, and herefore flowrae of refrigeran hrough he valve is insufficien. This causes a reducion in cooling efficiency due o he failure o exploi par of he evaporaor. The valve mus herefore be opened furher. Vice-versa, if he superhea emperaure is low i means ha he evaporaion process has no concluded a he end of he evaporaor and a cerain quaniy of liquid will sill be presen a he inle o he compressor. The valve mus herefore be closed furher. The operaing range of he superhea emperaure is limied a he lower end: if he flow-rae hrough he valve is excessive he superhea measured will be near 0 K. This indicaes he presence of liquid, even if he percenage of his relaive o he gas canno be quanified. There is herefore un undeermined risk o he compressor ha mus be avoided. Moreover, a high superhea emperaure as menioned corresponds o an insufficien flow-rae of refrigeran. The superhea emperaure mus herefore always be greaer han 0 K and have a minimum sable value allowed by he valve-uni sysem. A low superhea emperaure in fac corresponds o a siuaion of probable insabiliy due o he urbulen evaporaion process approaching he measuremen poin of he probes. The expansion valve mus herefore be conrolled wih exreme precision and a reacion capaciy around he superhea se poin, which will almos always vary from o K. Thus he greaer he K (proporional gain) he higher he response speed of he valve. The proporional acion does no consider he superhea se poin, bu raher only reacs o variaions. Therefore if he superhea value does no vary significanly, he valve will essenially remain saionary and he se poin canno be reached; he inegral acion is linked o ime and moves he valve in proporion o he deviaion of he superhea value from he se poin. The greaer he deviaions, he more inense he inegral acion; in addiion, he lower he value of T (inegraion ime), he more inense he acion will be. This measuremen indicaes he refrigeran charge in he circui. A value near 0 K indicaes possible insufficien refrigeran, which may cause a decline in circui cooling efficiency, a reducion in mass flow hrough he expansion valve and swings in superhea conrol. In addiion, i may indicae a refrigeran leak in circuis where he nominal subcooling value is known. A subcooling value ha is oo high, for example above 0 K, when no required by he applicaion may indicae excessive refrigeran charge in he circui, and can cause unusually high condensing pressure values wih a consequen decline in circui cooling efficiency and possible compressor shudown due o he high pressure swich ripping. Liquid reurns o he compressor during conrol Liquid reurns o he compressor only afer defrosing (for muliplexed cabines only) Liquid reurns o he compressor only when saring he conroller (afer being OFF) The superhea value swings around he se poin wih an ampliude greaer han C In he sar-up phase wih high evaporaor emperaures, he evaporaion pressure is high The ype of refrigeran se is incorrec The ype of valve se is incorrec The valve is conneced incorrecly (roaes in reverse) and is open The superhea se poin is oo low Low superhea proecion ineffecive Saor broken or conneced incorrecly Valve suck open The valve opening a sar-up parameer is oo high on many cabines in which he conrol se poin is ofen reached (for muliplexed cabines only) The pause in conrol afer defrosing is oo shor The superhea emperaure measured by he driver afer defrosing and before reaching operaing condiions is very low for a few minues The superhea emperaure measured by he driver does no reach low values, bu here is sill reurn of liquid o he compressor rack Many cabines defrosing a he same ime The valve is significanly oversized The valve opening a sar-up parameer is se oo high The condensing pressure swings The superhea swings even wih he valve se in manual conrol (in he posiion corresponding o he average of he working values) The superhea does NOT swing wih he valve se in manual conrol (in he posiion corresponding o he average of he working values) The superhea se poin is oo low MOP proecion disabled or ineffecive Refrigeran charge excessive for he sysem or exreme ransiory condiions a sar-up (for cabines only). Check and correc he ype of refrigeran parameer. Check and correc he ype of valve parameer. Check he movemen of he valve by placing i in manual conrol and closing or opening i compleely. One complee opening mus bring a decrease in he superhea and vice-versa. If he movemen is reversed, check he elecrical connecions. Increase he superhea se poin. Iniially se i o C and check ha here is no longer reurn of liquid. Then gradually reduce he se poin, always making sure here is no reurn of liquid. If he superhea remains low for oo long wih he valve ha is slow o close, increase he low superhea hreshold and/or decrease he low superhea inegraion ime. Iniially se he hreshold C below he superhea se poin, wih an inegraion ime of - seconds. Then gradually lower he low superhea hreshold and increase he low superhea inegraion ime, checking ha here is no reurn of liquid in any operaing condiions. Disconnec he saor from he valve and he cable and measure he resisance of he windings using an ordinary eser. The resisance of boh should be around 6 ohms. Oherwise replace he saor. Finally, check he elecrical connecions of he cable o he driver. Check if he superheaing is always low (< C) wih he valve posiion permanenly a 0 seps. If so, se he valve o manual conrol and close i compleely. If he superhea is always low, check he elecrical connecions and/or replace he valve. Decrease he value of he Valve opening a sar-up parameer on all he uiliies, making sure ha here are no repercussions on he conrol emperaure. Increase he value of he valve conrol delay afer defrosing parameer. Check ha he LowSH hreshold is greaer han he superhea value measured and ha he corresponding proecion is acivaed (inegraion ime >0 s). If necessary, decrease he value of he inegraion ime. Se more reacive parameers o bring forward he closing of he valve: increase he proporional facor o 0, increase he inegraion ime o 50 s and increase he derivaive ime o 0 sec. Sagger he sar defros imes. If his is no possible, if he condiions in he previous wo poins are no presen, increase he superhea se poin and he LowSH hresholds by a leas C on he cabines involved. Replace he valve wih a smaller equivalen. Check he calculaion in reference o he raio beween he raed cooling capaciy of he evaporaor and he capaciy of he valve; if necessary, lower he value. Check he conroller condenser seings, giving he parameers blander values (e.g. increase he proporional band or increase he inegraion ime). Noe: he required sabiliy involves a variaion wihin +/- 0.5 bars. If his is no effecive or he seings canno be changed, adop elecronic valve conrol parameers for perurbed sysems Check for he causes of he swings (e.g. low refrigeran charge) and resolve where possible. If no possible, adop elecronic valve conrol parameers for perurbed sysems. As a firs approach, decrease (by 0 o 50 %) he proporional facor. Subsequenly ry increasing he inegraion ime by he same percenage. In any case, adop parameer seings recommended for sable sysems. Increase he superhea se poin and check ha he swings are reduced or disappear. Iniially se C, hen gradually reduce he se poin, making sure he sysem does no sar swinging again and ha he uni emperaure reaches he conrol se poin. Acivae he MOP proecion by seing he hreshold o he required sauraed evaporaion emperaure (high evaporaion emperaure limi for he compressors) and seing he MOP inegraion ime o a value above 0 (recommended seconds). To make he proecion more reacive, decrease he MOP inegraion ime. Apply a sof sar echnique, acivaing he uiliies one a a ime or in small groups. If his is no possible, decrease he values of he MOP hresholds on all he uiliies. 50
