6 ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS ACTIVE OLDER ADULT SOCIAL CLUB Join your YMCA friends once a week for fellowship, fun and learning! Activities include board games, cards and anything else the group can dream up. SENIOR LUNCHEON Join us for food, fellowship and fun at one of our most popular events for Active Older Adults. Please register at the Member Services Desk. BUNCO Bunco is a fast-paced dice game of chance. It s a great way to make some new friends. No experience needed! CHAIR STRETCHING This gentle stretching class will help you maintain mobility while promoting healthy joints and flexible muscles. All exercises will be done seated or standing with the assistance of a chair. CHAIR YOGA This introductory class covers the basics of yoga while increasing flexibility, coordination, balance and endurance. Yoga postures can be practiced while sitting or standing with the aid of a chair. LIFE This Low Impact Fitness Experience is perfect for beginners or individuals with limitations. L.I.F.E utilizes gentle aerobics, resistance and weights to help you improve strength and endurance while preventing muscle and bone loss. ZUMBA CLASS FOR SENIORS & BEGINNERS ZUMBA at a lower intensity than our traditional class. This class is perfect for both seniors and those who are new to group fitness. The design of the class introduces easyto-follow Zumba choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. ENRICHMENT AND SPECIALTY CLASSES ADULT PAINTING AGES:16+ Encourage your creativity in a relaxed and friendly environment. The instructor will set up a still life or group project each week. or bring your own project. Bring a sketchpad first day of class. KNITTING AND CROCHETING AGES:16+ Learn the basics of knitting and crocheting. This class is for both beginners and experienced knitters. Bring a ball of worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles, crochet hook or your current project to the first class. CPR/AED AND FIRST AID TRAINING COMBO Ages:16+ A hands-on program to develop basic knowledge, skill and confidence to respond CPR, AED and FIRST AID. DANCE ADULT BALLET AGES:16+ Open to the public A ballet technique class with special emphasis on stretching, flexibility, and muscle toning. No experience required. ADULT BALLET II AGES:16+ Open to the public Advanced ballet techniques combined with an emphasis on stretching, flexibility, and muscle toning. 7 BARRE The Barre workout blends Dance, Yoga and Pilates with an emphasis on alignment and optimal posture. Through the use of small, controlled movements, isometric holds and high repetition, you will trim and tighten your entire body. BEGINNER CYCLE This class is for all levels and will introduce the world of indoor cycling through an awesome cardio workout. You will experience a challenging, exhilarating and fun workout with no complicated moves to learn. BODY ATTACK BODYATTACK is a high-energy fitness class with moves built for beginners to total addicts. We combine athletic movements like running, lunging and jumping with strength exercises such as push-ups and squats. BODYCOMBAT Punch and kick your way to fitness with this high-energy martial-arts inspired non-contact workout. Plus, a LESMILLS instructor will motivate you to make the most of every round. BODY PUMP Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP gives you a total body workout. Instructors will coach you through the scientifically proven weight room exercises while pumping out encouragement, motivation and great music. CXWORX CXWORX is a great core workout. Trained instructors will guide you through correct techniques as you work with resistance tubes and weight plates, as well as body weight exercises like crunches, and hovers. CHAIR STRETCHING This gentle stretching class will help you maintain mobility while promoting healthy joints and flexible muscles. All exercises will be done sitting or standing with the assistance of a chair. CYCLE This indoor cycling class will get your heart pumping by combining strength and endurance training associated with cycling. Jump, run and climb your way through an intense endurance session of aerobic and anaerobic training on a stationary bike. HIIT HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING Accelerate your fitness in this heart pumping workout. Through intense intervals of cardio, strength conditioning, plyometrics, and calisthenics, HIIT offers a full body workout like no other. Exercises can be modified to meet your fitness level. LES MILLS MASHUP A mix of the three most popular LESMILLS classes, BodyPump, BodyCombat and CXWORX in one session. Get the best of all three classes in an hour session. ADULTS LIFE This Low Impact Fitness Experience is perfect for beginners or individuals with limitations. L.I.F.E utilizes gentle aerobics, resistance and weights to help you improve strength and endurance while preventing muscle and bone loss. SPRINT LES MILLS SPRINT is a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout, using an indoor bike to achieve fast results. It s a short, intense style of training where the thrill and motivation comes from pushing your physical and mental limits. STEP STEP is the ultimate way to give your body a high energy cardio blast. Unique movements and patterns are taught with the use of a step and are designed to strengthen and tone muscle groups while improving coordination. STEP AND SCULPT Combine two of your favorite classes. Step with the addition of weighted exercises. TOTAL BODY SCULPT Strengthen and sculpt your entire body using dumbbells, body bars and more! Class provides a challenge to the experienced exerciser with plenty of options for those new to strength training. TRIFIT Experience the joy of movement with little to no stress on your joints. This moderately paced workout will improve aerobic capacity, endurance and flexibility. ZUMBA ZUMBA fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic, fun fitness program. 8 GROUP EXERCISE: MIND AND BODY CHAIR YOGA This introductory class covers the basics of yoga while increasing flexibility, coordination, balance and endurance. Yoga postures can be practiced while seated or standing with the aid of a chair. GENTLE YOGA ALL LEVELS Enjoy the harmonizing benefits of yoga through this practice of gentle stretching and strengthening, breath work, relaxation and meditation. PILATES Pilates is a mat based class that will help you improve core strength, flexibility and stability while building long, lean muscles. This non-impact total body workout emphasizes breath and body awareness. YOGA FLOW This moderate paced flow class focuses on Intermediate and advanced poses. Yoga flow will help you build strength and stamina while focusing on alignment, breath and balance. Modifications are offered to meet your needs. GROUP EXERCISE: WATER FITNESS minute classes Class sizes may be limited to maintain a safe environment. First come, first served. Classes are held in the South Pool unless noted otherwise. Aqua shoes recommended. AQUARISERS This medium intensity, medium impact aqua-aerobic class is conducted in shallow water with a deep water portion. This program is designed for the older adult, a person just beginning an exercise routine, or persons with mild physical ailments. AQUATONICS This low intensity, low to medium impact aqua-aerobic class is conducted in shallow water. Designed for the person just beginning an exercise routine or persons with mild physical ailments. This class improves flexibility and mobility, tones and strengthens muscles, increases stamina and energy, and minimizes impact on joints. DEEP WATER WORKOUT This medium intensity, no impact, aqua-aerobic class is conducted in deep water. This program uses a buoyant belt or a pool noodle that allows participants to vertical train and to fully utilize the water s property of natural resistance. HYDRO-CARDIO Start with a walking warm-up, followed by a cardio workout to get your heart rate up to burn calories. Class ends with stretching and cooling down. Aqua shoes recommended. HYDRO-COMBINATION CLASS This class is the best of both programs. Shallow water portion: Medium intensity and medium to high impact. Deep water portion: Medium intensity and no impact. HYDRO-PUMP Increase your stamina and energy with this medium to high intensity/impact aqua-aerobic workout. This class is designed to shape and tone muscles, condition cardio and improve flexibility. HYDRO-ZEN This experience combines the best of Yoga and Tai Chi and brings them to the warm water. It is designed to increase stability, balance, core strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and mental focus. This mind-body connection happens in chest deep shallow water and is set to beautiful music. Aqua shoes are recommended. This class is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. LIFE IS BETTER IN THE WATER AQUA ZUMBA CLASS FOR SENIORS & BEGINNERS Jump into the pool and dance away the calories. Aqua Zumba follows the traditional Zumba format of Latin moves done to upbeat tunes performed in the shallow end of the North Pool. Thanks to the resistance of the water, every salsa, merengue and reggaeton step takes a bit more effort. The dance combinations are slightly slower than the ones you do in a typical Zumba class, but the energy is just as high. If you love the original Zumba class or if you couldn t take one because of an injury or joint problem Aqua Zumba is a fun, low-impact option. SPECIALTY WATER FITNESS M.S. WATER WORKOUT An exercise program in cool water designed to promote mobility and a sense of well being for those with Multiple Sclerosis or other related ailments. A medical release is required prior to the beginning of class. Class is held in the North Pool. ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION YMCA AQUATIC PROGRAM A recreational exercise program designed to maintain and promote joint mobility and enhance a sense of well-being. 9 BACK AQUATIC PROGRAM Mild water exercises designed to relax and strengthen the muscles of the back, hips, and abdomen while increasing flexibility are stressed. A medical release is required prior to the beginning of class. Class is held in the South Pool. SWIM LESSONS All classes are held in the South Pool unless otherwise noted. Classes with less than three participants will be canceled on the Friday before session begins. Classes are 60 minutes in length. We are unable to provide make-ups for missed classes. SWIM BASICS AGES: 16 years and older Adults learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency. SWIM STROKES AGES: 16 years and older Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique. SPECIAL ADAPTED SWIM INSTRUCTION This class is for those who have special needs. It builds strength, confidence, and improves coordination through swimming and creative play. Please only register for one class per session so that we can accommodate as many participants as possible. PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS Learn how to swim at your own pace or work individually with a swim instructor to meet your goals. Request forms are available at the Member Services Desk. LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION ELLIS LIFEGUARDING AGES: 15 yrs before course begins PRE-REQUISITES: perform feet first surface dive in deep water, retrieve a 10-pound brick, tread water for 1 minute using legs only, and swim 100 continuous yards of freestyle or breast stroke. team HEALTH to discuss & WELLNESS the possibilities! BEST BODY COUNTDOWN The nutrition, fitness and lifestyle challenges of this 8 week program are strategically designed to help you reach Your Best Body, regardless of starting fitness level or weight. We provide all of the tools, motivation and accountability you need to be successful. ADULTS DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidence-based program recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This 12-month program is designed to help individuals with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing diabetes. The program is proven to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than 58-72%. Participants will: Be placed in a group based on their own scheduling and location needs. Meet one hour per week for 25 weekly, biweekly and monthly sessions. Learn skills to lead a healthier lifestyle, including how to eat healthier, increase physical activity, and change behavior. Note: Organized physical activity is not a part of the program. QUESTIONS: Financial assistance is available for individuals who qualify. Grit workouts incorporate High Intensity Interval training to take your fitness to the next level. Class size is limited so your coach can help you achieve your individual best performance! GRIT is a fee based program. SPORTS ADULT TENNIS LESSON & PLAY AGES: 18+ Participants will receive instruction from the Northern Delaware Section USTA Certified Instructors. 30 minute lesson then one hour of play. All skill levels are welcome. ADULT BOWLING LEAGUE ALL AGES WELCOME Non-sanctioned league. Three person teams. Sign up as a team or individual. Handicapped scoring is used. In case of absence, team can bring a substitute player. KARATE ADULT KARATE AGES:14 and older This program teaches the art of Tae Kwon Do along with minor segments borrowed from Yoga, Jiu-jitsu, and Shotokan. 11 ENRICHMENT AND SPECIALTY CLASSES YOUTH PRESCHOOL HANDS-ON SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES AGES: 4-5 years Preschoolers interactively explore their world in a fun, hands-on environment of discovery with an emphasis on both science and social studies. Due to the science portion of this class in the kitchen, we do not recommend this class for children with food allergies. PRESCHOOL PICASSOS AGES: 3-5 years Children will explore the world of art as they are encouraged to use their own creativity and imagination. ART AND CRAFTS AGES: 4-6 years A special hour of creative arts and crafts projects for young children! YOUNG ARTIST S STUDIO AGES: 7-12 years Students will create their own masterpieces as they learn drawing, painting, pottery, printing, etc. Class will also include some art history as we try techniques of famous artists. Bring a 10 x 12 sketchpad to the first class. AFTER SCHOOL ART AGES: 6-10 years Children will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively using pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint, and clay. Basic art skills will be introduced with projects to incorporate these skills. THREE DIMENSIONAL ART CLASS AGES: 8 years & over Girls and boys learn how to build 3D art projects with their hands using paper-mâché and clay materials. CREATIVE DRAWING AND PAINTING AGES: 7-12 years Participants will learn to draw and paint in the medium of their choice and put together a portfolio. Please bring a 10 x 12 sketchpad for class. PRESCHOOL CREATIVE TOTS WORKSHOPS AGES: 2-3 years with parent Share quality time with your child as you both enjoy arts and crafts, music, and motion. A different workshop theme will be held each month. MINDCRAFT PIXEL PROJECT AGES: 7-12 years Make a fun 3-D model based on the popular video game. SEWING DOLL CLOTHING AGES: 7-10 years Learn hand sewing skills to make a special item for your favorite doll. Dolls should be an American Girl doll or one at least 12 or taller. BASIC HAND SEWING AND ALTERATIONS FOR PARENT/CHILD AGES: 8 years & over Learn to sew on buttons, hook and eyes, make simple repairs and turn up a hem. Fabric and basic supplies for practice will be available, but feel free to bring an item you need to hem or mend with a spool of a matching thread. J.R. CHEF COOKING AGES: 8 years and over Learn how to make a healthy dish to surprise your family and friends. Cooking classes are not recommended for children with allergies. HEALTHY COOKING PARENT/CHILD AGES: 5-8 years Prepare good nutritious food that will fit into your budget. Cooking classes are not recommended for children with allergies. YOUTH LEGOS, LEGOS, EVERYWHERE AGES: 5-10 years Children will have a chance to build with a variety of Legos using directions, or their own creativity. Pictures will also be available for inspiration. ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS AGES: 5-9 years Children encounter and learn about various animals. DRAMA AGES: 5-9 years Children will work with their instructor to hone their acting skills and techniques. JEWELRY MAKING AGES: 5-9 years Children will make many types of jewelry and accessories, beaded bracelets, stamped charms and duct tape wallets. KIDS AND CLAY AGES: 6-10 years Children will create various projects using clay. COMIC BOOKS CLUB AGES: 8-11 years Participants will be able to explore new comics, discuss the weekly reading and share possible reads for the future. 12 YOUTH DANCE Our dance program is designed based on age-appropriate instruction and continues in full year increments. Dress Code: Students may wear any solid color leotard and tights. Please no costumes or long dresses. Hair should be pulled away from the face in a bun, braid or ponytail. PARENT/CHILD DANCE AND MOVEMENT AGES: 2-3 years with an adult (Must be 2 by 9/1/18) A perfect first dance experience using stretching, movement, and rhythm. PRE-BALLET AGES: 3-4 years (Must be 3 by 9/1/18) Introduction to beginning ballet steps and terms, focusing on balance body and spatial awareness, rhythm and coordination. SONG AND DANCE AGES: 3-5 years (Must be 3 by 9/1/18) A first dance experience to develop rhythm, grace, poise, and self-confidence. TAP/BALLET AGES: 4-5 years An introduction to both ballet and tap. Tap shoes recommended, but not required. TAP/BALLET II AGES: 6+ or instructor recommended A continuation of our popular tap/ ballet class. Tap and ballet shoes are recommended, but not required. BALLET I AGES: 5 years and over An introduction to ballet terms, positions and steps. BALLET II AGES: 7+ or instructor recommended An advanced dance program for students who have taken Ballet I. HIP HOP AGES: 7-12 years Learn basic funky moves to the latest pop music. MODERN DANCE AGES: 9 and over A free expressive style that combines elements of several dance genres. Only you may sign out your child unless you designate an alternate adult at time of sign in. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in our facility unless they are participating in a supervised YMCA program or class. FAMILY TIME IN THE YOUTH FITNESS CENTER During posted hours, families are invited to play with their children in the Youth Fitness Center. BRY Swim Team strengthens the community by promoting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in a supportive competitive team setting. We participate in both YMCA and USA Swimming competitions, locally, regionally and nationally. Our experienced and supportive coaches help each swimmer develop to his or her potential, celebrating competitive success while emphasizing the YMCA s core values of the importance of sportsmanship, honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. A / WATER DISCOVERY Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. B / WATER EXPLORATION In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
