DAVO S DIARY Good evening and a warm welcome to Blackfield and Langley FC for tonight s exciting Hampshire cup semi-final, we wish their manager, players and supporters a pleasant evening and safe trip home afterwards. Blackfield are a good side who have been knocking on the door for promotion for a while, Howesy their manager is a good lad who has been there a while now and has assembled another good side who are doing well in their league and in the cups. There is no doubt in my mind that we will need to be at our best to get the result that we need to progress to the showpiece final that s on offer. We had a quiet week last week due to the weather stopping us from being able to put right our disappointments of the previous weeks results, we managed to train as best we can albeit a bit of a manufactured session in the clubhouse as all facilities were cancelled at short notice. We are fully focussed on getting back on track in the league, no doubt the loss and draw at Bishops Cleeve and home to Barnstaple have really knocked our hopes, a lot of people will have ruled us out now and that s fine with me, all I want and expect is the team to go out and play to their maximum and put a performance in and I know the results will come, on our day we are better than anyone and it just so happens that a loss of form to key players and injuries to key players has stopped us in our tracks, we are a very young side who I have every faith in and I know we will keep giving everything for each other and the club and then let s see where that leaves us! Player news, Joe Cook and Liam Gilbert are still a number of weeks away although they are stepping up rehab. Adam Tomasso is back from injury but is unavailable for the next 2 weeks (after tonight) so that s a blow, Joe Hayward and Jamie Barron are both carrying injuries that may or may not keep them out of today s game, we have a very small squad and so all of that has hit us hard but we have faith in what we have in the squad to produce the sort of performances we need, no excuses we need to do better! Enjoy tonight s game, cheer the boys on, we need that support that you have given us all year and let s see if we can produce something special in the remaining weeks of the season. Up the citizens! Davo

CHAIRMAN S COMMENTS After the wipe-out of most non-league football last weekend due to the severe weather, we hope that we are back playing tonight in the semi-final of the Hampshire Senior Cup. This is a great competition with history and heritage, which pits the clubs of Hampshire against each other. The fact that bigger clubs such as Havant and Waterlooville and AFC Bournemouth are also playing in these semifinals shows that this is also a tough competition to play in. We have been drawn against strong opposition in the form of Blackfield & Langley, who are sitting comfortably in second place in the Wessex Premier. They are a club that are hungry for success as we are and so this should be a great Cup tie with the prize being a Cup Final at St Marys. So, enjoy the game! Kind Regards Paul Murray Chairman, Winchester City Football Club

IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY CLUB HISTORY After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season they won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the Hampshire League and when they were accepted, made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although they won the title the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the Hampshire League reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locks Heath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87 Blackfield & Langley recognised that to compete against the best in local football the long-term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams. The Chairman at the time, Hans McDonald, his successor Ian Hoare and an enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to standard. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Div 1 the club were relegated to the new Div 2 in The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. In 2007/8 the Club were awarded FA Charter Standard status. The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of Jon Gittens. Jon continued for a 2nd season and felt the Club had consolidated well into the Premier Division, finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the

team eventually finishing in 14 th position. 2011/2012 saw the club slip to 16 th at the end of the season. The 2012/13 season was the club s most successful under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league by 10 points, reaching the 4 th Qualifying round of the FA Cup losing 3-0 to Hastings United and reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager s role, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th in the face of such adversity. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1 st team who started off brightly and looked as if they were going to have a successful season in the league, but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn t quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5 th in the league. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3 rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2 nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup (losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent), made it to the 3 rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup a busy season indeed! Over the years Blackfield and Langley has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead. The club were losing finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup in 1986, the Hampshire Youth League Cup in 1991 and the Hampshire Youth Floodlight Final in The success of the 2014/15 season was beating Gosport away in the Russell Coates Cup semi-final and going on to beat Horndean (2-0) in the final.

29 MALCOLM S MUSINGS We welcome Blackfield to Winchester for tonight s Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final. To reach this round Blackfield beat Folland Sports, Tadley Calleva and AFC Portchester scoring 13 goals in the process without conceding any. They are currently second in the Premier Division of the Sydenhams Wessex League with the best defensive record and goal difference in the division, with Lerone Plummer, Liam Robinson, Sam Griffin and Jamie White all having scored 15 or more league goals for them this season. Robinson and White are both former Winchester City players, while Plummer played for us in pre-season prior to the start of last season. They also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase, but were beaten by Bracknell Town, a team we played against us in this season s FA Cup. Blackfield are long standing opponents of ours in both the Hampshire and Wessex Leagues and we last played each other in the league in 2014/15, when the teams drew 2-2 at Winchester, with Winchester winning 1-0 at Blackfield. That season Blackfield won the Russell Cotes Cup, but their best season was 2012/13 when they won the Wessex League and reached the 4 th qualifying round of the FA Cup, a rare achievement for members of this league. In last season s Hampshire Senior Cup, we beat them 6-0 in the second round of the competition thanks to 3 goals by Sam Wilson, 2 from Howard Neighbour and 1 from Joe Briggs, three players who are now longer playing for us. However, with a final place at stake we expect a much tougher game today, especially as Blackfield are in very good cup form this season and are at the time of writing still also involved in both the Southampton Senior Cup and the Sydenhams League Cup. Although Blackfield were long standing members of the Hampshire League they did not play in the Wessex League until 2000/01, but they struggled in this league and after finishing in the bottom three 3 seasons out of 4 were relegated, but they returned to the top flight five seasons later and have this time been more successful in this division and are now acknowledged as one of the better teams in the division. One of their better-known players is Jamie White who is once again amongst the goals for them this season. Jamie was a prolific marksman for this club netting 51 goals in 32 league games in the 2011/12 season when he helped us win the Wessex League title and earn promotion to the Southern League. I also recall Liam Robinson working with the Eastleigh football club academy as well as playing for Winchester in their last league win against Blackfield. I have seen Blackfield play Eastleigh several times, and the teams have met in both the FA Vase and Hampshire Senior Cup with several people including Charlie Balfe and Tim Packer been associated with both clubs. Blackfield s first ever FA Vase tie was against Eastleigh in 1997/98 which they lost 4-1 and they were beaten in the same competition by a strong Eastleigh team in In 2015/16 Blackfield reached the final of the Southampton Senior Cup but lost to Team Solent.

30 THE CITIZENS POST PLAYER PROFILES RYAN PRYCE Ex-AFC Bournemouth Goalkeeper that also lists Salisbury City, Gosport Borough and Fleet Town amongst his former clubs. Pryce made five senior appearances for the Cherries, making his debut against Southend United. DAN WILLIAMSON Referred to by Manager, Craig Davis as an electric-heeled, attack-minded right back joined the club from Fleet Town. Williamson has also previously played for Marlow and Hungerford Town. DANNY KING - Left sided defender, the clubs longest-serving player currently and a real fans favourite. A teacher by trade, he has played for Chelsea and Southampton in his youth. ADAM TOMASSO - Had a brilliant season for City and part of the promotion side in 2014/2015. Played for AFC Totton and Lymington Town. A student fabricator/welder, another one of our long serving players. ROB FLOOKS Centre-back who is in his second spell with the club. Flooks previously played for Fawley AFC and AFC Totton before he first came to City. Flooks subsequently left the club due to work commitments and switched to Alresford Town before returning to City this summer. JOSH HARFIELD 21 year-old defender who was City reserve player three seasons ago. Since played for Whitchurch United and most recently, Fleet Town, Harfield has returned to City this summer, a player with real potential for the future. JOE HAYWARD Defender who joined us last season having previously been with Eastleigh FC, unfortunately broke his leg during last year but returned quickly and showed what great potential he has. Delighted he is with us again this year and look forward to seeing him in action. ANDY JENKINSON - Twenty one year old Andy started his career at Reading, before joining Basingstoke Town when he was released by the Royals in He appeared for Basingstoke more than 50 times over two seasons, before moving on to Maidenhead United. Andy signed for Chippenham in the close season, but he became frustrated by the lack of first team opportunities. He joined City with a determination to demonstrate his ability on a regular basis last season, he has returned for another season this year having impressed last year. JAMIE BARRON - Resigned from Gosport Borough Jamie has played for Salisbury, Andover, Sholing and Folland Sports. A winner of a Schools National Cup medal. Scored a hat-trick of

31 penalties in a pre-season friendly with Moneyfields this summer. Appointed Captain this season and a really important player for us. OLI BAILEY 20 year-old striker who has joined the club this summer from Gosport Borough, Has also previously played for Swindon Supermarine and started out as a youngster at Southampton FC. Pacey, enthusiastic forward with a bright future. Has already shown how good he is during pre season PAT COX A prolific striker that has signed for City at the end of this pre-season. Cox joined from Farnborough and also previously played for Fleet Town, Hayes & Yeading and Staines Town. Has been prolific at each of his previous clubs scoring 30 goals plus in each of the last few seasons at step 3 and 4, links back up once again with Manager, Craig Davis. ROB CARR 24 year-old highly rated winger that has previously played for both Woking and also Fleet Town. Another regular goalscorer with 20 goals plus in the last 3 seasons for Fleet Town.
