5 ENGLAND, THE WORLD CUP 2018 AND PANAMA England have received by their standards a favourable draw in next year s Group Stage of the World Cup with Panama, Honduras and Belgium providing the opposition though the latter, with Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, may prove a little difficult given the lack of experience within Gareth Southgate s promised chosen few. Panama are currently ranked 56th in the FIFA Rankings, sandwiched between Japan and Haiti (England are 15th) and the two Countries have never met in an International fixture and Panama have never before qualified for the World Cup Finals and their qualification was not without controversy. In their final game they needed to beat Costa Rica and did so by two goals to one though it is seemingly accepted that for the first goal the ball never actually crossed the line. Perhaps they don t have the assistants on the goal lines in South America though it could just as easily be the case that they do as they never appear to give decisions anyway! Qualification was marked by a day s National Holiday! The current Panama Squad largely play their Club football in their own Country with just a couple playing in North America and one each in Bucharest, Toronto and Lausanne. The current Manager, one Hernan Dario Gomez the seventeenth since 2000 has a colourful past having been dismissed from his post as Colombia s manager in 2011 after attacking a woman in a bar. Unlike a lot of South American Countries Panama does not seem to produce World Class Players who make their way to Europe and the large salaries, and none of the names in their squad register on the World stage. Domestic football in Panama seems to have one major League, though that has only ten teams and they play in two Competitions, the Apertura and the Clausara (these names are also used in other South American Countries) with identical formats. Each tournament has two stages with the first stage being a double round robin affair with all the Clubs playing each other home and away. The top four then progress through Semi Finals and a Final. Following the completion of both tournaments the first stages are combined into an aggregate table with the bottom side being relegated. Five of the ten sides play in Panama City, with Tauro, rather like Queens Park in Scotland, playing in the National Stadium which has a capacity of 32,000. None of the remaining Stadiums hold more than 5,500 with one being as low as 900. The top two sides each season qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League which is open to Clubs in North and central America and the Caribbean. So, a new adventure for the Panama National side who are known as Les Canaleros (The Canal Men) or Le Marca Roja (The Red Tide) and travel to Russia having nothing to lose with any positive result one imagines counting as an immense gain. England awaits! CLUB NICKNAMES UPDATE- Not sure how they were missed out last time, but FAREHAM TOWN have been known since the late 80s as the Creeksiders- apparently as a group of their supporters wanted a change from the usual Town or Reds moniker. Clubs are welcome to use any of the Newsletter in their matchday programme. With photographs, please acknowledge the taker. 8 MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS Gary Day writes EASTLEIGH 3-1 BOURNEMOUTH Bournemouth met Eastleigh for the first time since February 2003, the teams being old adversaries from days past. The Poppies task looked to be a potentially tough one as thirteen of the fifteen players selected for the Spitfires had appeared in the National League this season and the two others were part of the first team squad. Bournemouth, drawn away in this competition for the third time this season, started well with a free-kick causing problems for the home defence but Speers put it over the bar. Eastleigh countered, Miley s shot being deflected wide and Obileye, up from defence for a corner, headed off the Poppies crossbar. Obileye attempted a further effort from distance that Poynter in the visitors goal saved. The Poppies, who were working hard, took the lead in the 26th minute when Eder BATISTA struck a measured shot from the right which went low into the far corner. Eastleigh keeper Flitney had to save high from a Ohameje header following a Niculescu cross. Obileye caused further problems to the Poppies defence from a free-kick, the ball coming to Miley whose half-volley was held at the second attempt by Poynter. Eastleigh created further chances close to the break, but Miley headed a Hoyte cross over, Constable headed wide whilst Glynn cleared a further home effort off the goal-line. Bournemouth held onto their lead going into the interval. HT: 0-1. Bournemouth defended well in the second half as Eastleigh searched for an equaliser, Wood s free-kick from just outside the box was deflected clear and McAllister headed a Miley cross over. It was mainly one-way traffic, but the Bournemouth defence was tight, well-disciplined and held firm. McAllister timed his run well to receive a Hollands pass, but the Eastleigh skipper s shot was saved by Poynter. The Poppies were still ahead and proving hard to break down as the game reached the midway point of the second half but the home side soon levelled. The goal was a well finished one as Cavanagh MILEY had a bit to do but did it well a neat flick over Poynter and beat a defender s attempted goal-line clearance. The Spitfires turned the score around within a further two minutes, the Poppies defence failed to clear from a corner and they were punished, again by MILEY, who buried a low 15-yard shot via a deflection. It was soon three goals in eight minutes as McAllister headed a cross down to sub Paul McCALLUM who swept the ball past the keeper. The Poppies did their best to push further forward but to no avail. There was a late chance at both ends but Donachy did well to block a McCallum shot following a good home move whilst Flitney was forced to make a diving save from a Meddah shot. FT: 3-1. Eastleigh, the 2012 winners, move into the quarter final stage this time. The Poppies, twice finalists themselves over the years (but not since 1935), put in a fine determined performance on the evening and, just when an upset was starting to look possible, that three goal blast proved enough to put them out. Despite being defeated, I am sure that Poppies boss Mick Cuffie would acknowledge how well his side performed on the night. Mike Robins writes FAWLEY 2-2 AFC STONEHAM [5-4 on penalties] There s a certain something about a game under lights, here s a snap ahead of the game at Fawley- my 21st visit to the ground tonight. There was early pressure from the visitors, sporting pink and black as opposed to the purple of Saturday, and it was almost a case of déjà vu when they went down to an early goal. Kieran ROCHE was allowed free passage through the centre of the park and was able to round the onrushing keeper to put the Oilers 1-0 inside 6 minutes from around 8 yards out. Stoneham nearly got back on level terms on 13 minutes when Brady had a decent chance that gave Fawley keeper Page a relatively easy start to Sunday, 10 December /18 Edition #26 Page 8 of 20

9 his evening. Both Brady and Caballero created chances making the most of the uncertainty in the home defence, but nothing came of it. Both sides were restricted to counter attacking opportunities as the game swept from end to end with neither side able to assert their grip. Stoneham had the better of it though, with Page forced into making two superb saves to keep the Oilers ahead and was also thankful to see his save bounce to safety off the upright following a shot from Stoneham s Harris. With five minutes in the half remaining the visitors had the chance to level things from the penalty spot, but Palmer s effort was well saved by Page. HT 1-0 Page resumed where he left off in the first half punching away a shot from the edge of the penalty area early in the second period (see picture above]. However, the custodian had no answer to Chris MANNING on 58 minutes when a soft penalty award gave Stoneham the chance to level again- and the ball was rifled home although Page almost got a hand to it. Fawley almost responded immediately when Roche broke through, but the chance went and both sides were showing renewed application, it was that man Page who again saved Fawley s bacon with 15 to go when Fawley- Burch 1-0 Stoneham- Caballero 1-1 Fawley- McPhee 2-1 Stoneham- Manning 2-2 Fawley- Green 3-2 Stoneham- Clark 3-3 Fawley- Keating 4-3 Stoneham- Brewer 4-4 Fawley- Page 5-4 Stoneham- Beckerley 5-4 falling on the ball in a scramble inside the six yard box. However, as time began to drift away and the dreaded penalties loomed, Fawley broke down the left dugouts side and Bradley s cross picked out Ben BOLTOIN who had a free header from close range to put the hosts 2-1 up. The lead didn t last long though as Chris MANNING grabbed his and Stoneham s second with a super 35-yard strike that Page had no chance of stopping right at the end of normal time. No time for any more action really; FT 2-2 Straight to penalties with Fawley going first. Both sides scored their opening four. Page stepped up and fired home the fifth for Fawley and then made a save to deny Stoneham theirs to round off a good evening s work. Keith Legg writes SHOLING 3-0 PETERSFIELD TOWN Sholing continued their defence of the League Cup with a win over Petersfield to advance into the Quarter Finals. Scoreline didn't reflect the one-sided nature of the game, with all the goals coming in a 9 minute spell in the last 25 minutes. The pattern for the whole game was set in the first 10 minutes as wave after wave of Sholing attacks pinned Petersfield back into their half. Marvin McLean & Sawyer both fired wide, before a nice one touch move ended with Sawyer hitting a half-volley just over the bar. Rory Wood and Dan Mason also fired just off target, before Byron flicked a header just past the upright. Best chance fell to Alex Sawyer, with time only 10 yards out, but he didn't get a clean connection and the keeper was able to block. Kev Brewster put a 20 yard freekick just wide, before curling in a deep corner that was met at the far post by Dan Miller, but almost out of play, he headed against the crossbar. More half chances came and went, with Sholing not able to work the keeper enough. HT 0-0 The Petersfield goalmouth continued to live a charmed existence at the start of the second half, this time Cuthbertson smashed a 12 yard effort off the underside of the crossbar and no one could force in the follow up. Rory Wood went through on goal, but just as he was about to square to Dan Mason to tap in, the ball took a horrible bobble. Petersfield may not have been creating much going forward, but were throwing themselves in front of everything in their own penalty area, twice with blocks in a scrambled Sholing attack. Finally, on 67 minutes the Boatmen broke the deadlock. A freekick out on the right side was curled into the six yard box by Kev BREWSTER where it missed everyone, including the keeper, and bounced up high into the net. Wasn't long to wait until the second goal, as Marvin McLEAN collected the ball on the edge of the area, made room on his unfavoured right foot and fired in a low shot inside the post, leaving the keeper Sunday, 10 December /18 Edition #26 Page 9 of 20

10 motionless. Almost straight from the restart, he tried the same move again, but this time was tripped from behind for a clear penalty. Kev BREWSTER dispatched the spot kick with his usual aplomb, making it 7 goals in 6 Cup games this season for him. Despite being a spectator for most the game, Gosney was finally called into action to save low down by his near post. There was just time left for the Rams crossbar to be rattled for a third time in the match, as Alex Sawyer saw his 22 yard effort cannon off the woodwork. Sholing are away to Newport IW in the Quarter Final. FT 3-0 Ian Claxton writes LYMINGTON TOWN 1-2 VERWOOD TOWN after extra time Lymington came into this game sitting in 5th spot in the and having scored 10 goals in their last two games in the last 7 days, by contrast Verwood are having a tough season and are in the dungeon of. Lymington started slightly the brighter with Ross Bottomley and Owen Fee having shots on the visitors goal in the first 15 minutes, however Verwood struck first in bizarre fashion. On 24 minutes a massively long throw in from Ron Frost appeared to go straight into the goal but the referee awarded the score as it brushed through the legs of Lymington keeper Ross Casey with the slightest of contact. Lymington tried to get back into the game, but Owen Fee and Zac Pickett skied both of their chances and Matt Vining blocked Bottomley s effort. Verwood s shooting was no better and brad gale header was the closest they came to employing Casey in the rest of the first half. Lymington went closer in the early part of the second half, Fee s deflected shot squeaked around one post and Hurst s effort went the wrong side of the other one. But chances were few and far between. On 66 minutes Lymington were awarded a soft penalty and substitute Sam House drew the home side level from the spot. Verwood s big number 5- Ron Frost, was the mainstay of their defence, seemingly everywhere and clearing up almost every Lymington attack his long throw had already given them one goal and in the dying minutes another almost win the game for Verwood forcing a fingertip save from Casey from joe Manley s head that after Hurst had shot wide at the other end. Full time 1-1 so extra time required, and Lymington could have struck almost straight away but Haigh pushed Sam House heard around the post. Things got worse for Verwood as Frost was sent off with a second Caution and the yellow card was being more frequently shown as players became even more desperate to win a generally poor match, with neither side truly looking dominant or on their games. Lymington had a couple of chances to take the lead at the end of the first period of extra time but Haigh was up to the task and saved both. However, the 10 men of Verwood struck early after the break with Matt Vining getting onto a through ball and beat Casey from 20 yards to put the visitors ahead again. It was the clearest chance all evening. Willett got the ball in the net for Lymington two minutes later but was ruled offside and their luck continued to desert them as they laid siege to the Verwood goal for the remaining 5 minutes but without a clear result or chance. Verwood progress to the final next week to face Bashley at Hurn Bridge. Sunday, 10 December /18 Edition #26 Page 10 of 20

19 SATURDAY MATCH REPORTS Gary Day writes TEAM SOLENT 7-2 SHAFTESBURY On a chilly and dull afternoon at Test Park, the teams produced some fine football with Solent bagging seven goals to move upwards in the table. Solent got out of the starting gate well, playing the ball around in a confident manner with the two front men Kasimu and Obeng combining, the ball was pulled back to the latter who fired just the wrong side of the near post. Solent went into a deserved lead when Wallace laid the ball to MITFORD who took it on and shot low into the corner with the visitors defence failing to make a challenge. Kasimu received a Mitford pass and knocked it past Card, the advancing keeper, but it ran on too far for the Solent striker to apply the touch to guide it the right side of the post. Solent s debutant keeper Collins had to be on his toes to first take the sting out of a Flint shot and then hold onto it. A second Sparks goal was looking likely and Wallace gained a further assist by finding KASIMU and he controlled it well, shrugged off an attempted challenge and buried a low shot from the left into the far corner. The Rockies soon hit back with a neat shot on the turn that went into the corner by LANE-LENEY to make it 2-1. The goal spurred Shaftesbury into a good spell up to half-time with a Flint effort from 20-yards going just over the bar. HT: 2-1. Clarke just failed to direct a far post header on target from a Benjamin cross early in the second half, but Solent soon found their rhythm again and didn t really look back. Obeng struck an 18-yard piledriver that Card did well to tip over but OBENG did net Solent s third following a slick passing move starting with a fine tackle by Stahler who moved it on to Wiseman who then found the striker to neatly change his feet and slot home. Benjamin came close with a shot for the visitors whilst a Stahler pass put Kasimu in on the keeper at the other end, but Card did well to block. It proved to be a brief respite though as yet another Wallace assist found MITFORD on the right who netted with a low angled shot. OBENG made it 5-1, receiving a pass across from Wiseman, he neatly slotted the ball home. Obeng turned provider, putting DACRES-SMITH into an advanced position to shoot home and register his first goal of the season. The Rockies reduced the deficit when sub BROWN controlled a cross and had time to place the ball home, the score was now 6-2. With time up on the watch, KASIMU joined Obeng and Mitford with two goals in the game when he shrugged off an attempted challenge and made inroads into the left side of the penalty box and cleverly feigned to cross before slotting inside the near post. FT: 7-2. It was a most satisfactory afternoon for the Sparks, their football was exemplary assured in defence, accurate pass and move play in midfield and had the power of dynamite near to the goal. Very few of their peers would stop them in this form. 20 WILTSHIRE SENIOR CUP 2017/18 Quarter Final Bremhill 12-Dec Bemerton Heath Harlequins Chippenham Town 13-Dec Chippenham Park Royal Wootton Bassett Town 13-Dec Highworth Town Westbury United 13-Dec Salisbury WEEK NINETEEN ROUND UP Most midweeks of late have been dominated by Cup fixtures writes John Gorman this one went one better by being entirely devoted to Cup fixtures with not a League match in sight! Two games in our own League Cup saw Fawley AFC and Sholing progress at the expense of AFC Stoneham and Petersfield respectively. At Fawley the scores were level at two all after ninety minutes with Chris Manning claiming both of Stonehams goals, one in the last minute, but the penalty shoot out ended 5-4 in favour of the home side. Sholing meanwhile scored three goals in six minutes in the second half to end Petersfield s interest in the Competition. In the Hampshire Senior Cup, a lone Bobby Scott goal gave AFC Portchester victory over Romsey Town while Blackfield & Langley made the long journey to Tadley and returned home with a two goal win to their credit. Bournemouth scored first at mighty Eastleigh before going down three one and the final tie between Hamble Club and Christchurch was decide by penalties. Nathan Lynch scored twice for the home side in normal time the score at ninety minutes was two all and it was Hamble who triumphed from the spot. Verwood Town, who have struggled all season in the League, produced a surprise with an extra time goal from Matt Vining seeing them through to the Final of the Bournemouth Senior Cup at Lymington s expense. The Potters will now meet Bashley in next week s Final. The remaining game of the evening saw Andover New Street beat near neighbours Whitchurch in the Andover Open Cup. Just one fixture on Wednesday and a good result for Alresford and the League as the North Hampshire side knocked Southern League Hartley Wintney out of the Hampshire Senior Cup Tom Richards and Chris Mason scoring the goals in the two one success. This gives the League four sides in the last 8 of the Competition along with Eastleigh, Havant & Waterlooville, Winchester and either Farnborough or AFC Bournemouth. Winter dipped its icy fingers into the fixture list for the first time on Saturday hopefully not a prelude of what is to come with three games lost to frozen pitches, but it was business as usual at the top of the Premier Division. Andover Town returned to winning ways with a three one victory at Bemerton after the home side had scored first while Blackfield & Langley travelled to Hamworthy and ended the Dorset side s recent fine run with a two goal victory courtesy of strikes from Liam Robinson and Rudi Plummer. Andover and Blackfield are clear at the top but the positions of the chasing pack change from week to week. Sholing s game with Cowes was one of the postponements so Lymington leapt into third place with an eight one defeat of bottom Club Petersfield a hat trick for Charlie Willett and two apiece for Jake King and Steve Walker. Petersfield have now lost eight of their last nine games and this defeat moves their goals against column in to three figures. Horndean and Alresford both won one nil at Bournemouth and Brockenhurst respectively and AFC Portchester were too strong for Amesbury, the 3-1 victory leaving the visitors still adrift at the bottom with Petersfield. Newport improved their position with a three two defeat of Hamble Club but still have more work to do to climb away from the bottom three positions while Bashley scored the first and last goals of the game at Baffins but conceded five in between with two for Blu Boam. Team Solent scored seven against Shaftesbury at Test Park, though you would not have seen that result coming at half time when the score was 2-1, but Solent s finishing in the second half was exemplary. The only game left to mention was at Cams Alders but a frozen pitch prevented any play between Fareham and Portland. The top game in between leaders Andover New Street and Tadley Calleva was the third game to fall foul of the weather allowing Christchurch to take over top place in the table on goal difference following their five one win over Ringwood, with Luke Stone three and Harvey Wright two making the score sheet. Steve Flynn scored twice for New Milton in their 3-3 draw with Fawley a good point for the visitors given New Milton s recent form and Alton kept themselves on the fringe of the promotion race with a two goal win at Hythe & Dibden. US Portsmouth and AFC Stoneham shared two goals and the points at Burnaby Road while Verwood s woes continued with visitors Downton winning by the odd goal in three. Finally Totton & Eling claimed their first win in six with a four nil defeat of Whitchurch at Millers Park, the fourth loss in a row for the North Hampshire side. So, Christchurch take over top spot but the top seven sides are covered by just six points with the League roughly at the halfway mark. Hopefully the weather s interference will continue to be minimal. Sunday, 10 December /18 Edition #26 Page 20 of 20
