TRAFFIC NEWS Clubs are reminded again that if you are travelling to Bournemouth or Christchurch and to a lesser extent Hamworthy United please be advised to add extra travelling time to their journey as there are road works at Blackwater Bridge (the Hurn and Christchurch turn off) on the A338 Spur Road into and out of Bournemouth. This is a long term series of roadworks including some lane widening. Principally southbound this is causing extensive tailbacks at peak and off peak times, with roads around the locality also suffering from congestion. Their victory over Brockenhurst in the 2nd Round was their first outing in the competition this season by virtue of their performance in 2017/18. Will Haliston notched a hat trick in their win over the Badgers last time out with a win that ended up being a comfortable win for the visitors who took the lead in the first half when a long ball caught out the home defence. The second came early in the second half from a corner on the right volleyed in at the far post. The visitors were in complete control after this adding two more goals, the fourth a penalty. On a windy (and ultimately rainy) night both teams struggled to come to terms with the long ball and Sholing were to benefit as early as the 4th minute when a ricochet bounced off a Poppies defender into the path of Lee WORT. If there was an element of luck about the build up, there was nothing wrong with the finish, low past Sam Jones. One suspects that Sholing have built their success on undoubted firepower backed by a solid defence. Here the latter was fully tested as both teams went toe to toe with fast attacking football. Sholing had had several warning of Poppies' attacking intent before the equaliser in the 23rd minute. Not for the first time, the Sholing defence was split open by a ball down the inside left channel and Shiv ROUSHBAIANI raced clear. His first effort was blocked by keeper Gosney but the Poppies forward was able to follow up and score. From then until half time Bournemouth had the better of the game as they hassled and harried the normally composed Sholing. They even had a couple of credible shouts for a penalty particularly when Aziz Aldhayan was pushed over. HT 1-1 Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 4 of 18

By that stage it had dawned on everyone that Sholing's 100% League record was under serious threat but they were able to take an early lead in the second half. Again the quality was in the finish, not the build up, as Dan MASON scored a typical poacher's goal with a swivel and shot. Would that break Poppies resistance - not a bit of it. Poppies had brought on the much travelled River Smith and he gave Sholing early warning as he ran onto a through ball only to be thwarted by the onrushing Gosney. In the 66th minute there was no such escape for the home defence as SMITH latched onto another through ball, this time hitting the target. Parity was short-lived as Sholing went back on the attack and they restored their lead in the 70th minute as an unmarked Dan MASON was left with a simple tap in at the far post from a header across goal. The rain had forced us the seek cover in the Sholing Ultras stand and they were in full voice as they ran through their repertoire of songs. However when one asked if they had sung their "We're always winning" song, he was told by a fellow member of the choir that the game was much too close for that. And so it was - as Sholing were fully tested by a Poppies side that pounded away in search of a third equaliser. Finally in the 4th minute of stoppage time, Sholing broke Poppies resistance when Bradley TARGETT raced through a stretched defence and placed the ball low past Jones. So the Ultras finally got to sing their song during the final few moments of the game. FT 4-2 Congratulations to both sides on a thrilling game - neither will face harder physical games than this one during the rest of the season. Mike Robins writes CHRISTCHURCH 1-1 HYTHE & DIBDEN INTERESTING cup tie at Hurn Bridge, ultimately decided on penalties with little between the two sides in the normal 90 minutes of play. Both teams had chances but the First Division side probably shaded the opening exchanges with the first shot in the 10 th minute from Robbie Pittman being well blocked by Grant Cormack before it reached the goal. Moments later it was Scott Joyce who saw a shot parried by the outstretched leg of Hythe custodian Ellis Grant, and on 21 minutes the home striker saw another effort deflected high and wide for a corner. A quick break from the resulting kick saw Sam Woodward sprint up the flank and his threaded pass to Harrison Fay flashed wide of the mark. Grant s long clearances were giving the hosts some issues at the back trying to counter the pace of the wide players. However on the half hour it was Christchurch who opened the scoring. A James King delivery from the left was headed home by JOYCE. Moments later Max Wilcock saw Grant called into action yet again with a decent stop. It was not all one way as Pittman again found an opening and his shot tested Ollie King in the home goal at the Pickford Stand end. HT 1-0 Hythe played some good football stringing together some several strings of passes but lacked the final telling ball on several occasions so it was probably not that surprising that an equaliser came, the delivery from the flank evaded players in the goal area and left sub Dave WYATT with a simple tap in with just seven minutes left on the clock. Christchurch had had an opportunity to extend their lead before the goal when a slip in midfield by a visiting player allowed Wilcock to progress and fire goalwards- but the shot went over the bar. Perhaps the biggest cheer of the game was when Hythe scored but the cheer was quickly stifled when it became clear that the ball had in fact gone wide- behind the goal and hit the netting pitch side. FT 1-1 Although both sides tried for a winner once that equaliser had gone in the momentum was with the visitors and so it proved with them going through to the semi final 3-1. Grant saved two and King one of the strikes with former Norwegian international Jo Tessem setting the visitors on their way with their first penalty. Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 5 of 18

THE WESSEX LEAGUE AND THE FA WOMENS SUPER LEAGUE A perhaps strange title on first reading but there is a connection between the two albeit that the latter is a National League whilst the Wessex is closer to home so to speak. The FA Womens Super League contains eleven Clubs, one of which is Yeovil Ladies who are managed by Lee Burch, a long time stalwart of the Wessex League on the Waterside as well as having experience at a higher level. Lee has been on Fawley AFC s books in recent seasons and has made five appearances to date in the current campaign, either in midfield or in goal he is a more than competent keeper but he is also manager of Yeovil Ladies. Having cut his managerial teeth in the Womens game at Southampton before moving to Millwall, he this season graduated to the top rank with his appointment at the Somerset side who contrarily play their home matches at Dorchester s Avenue Stadium in Dorset. As with the Premier League in mens football there is a considerable disparity between the top Clubs and the rest in the Womens League with the likes of Yeovil and Bristol City having to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton all funded by their Parent Clubs. A quote from the Bristol City Manager last season sums it up rather succinctly: Manchester City pay Steph Houghton 65,000 a year we pay our players a game plus expenses. The figures may have been slightly distorted but the reasoning is clear and sadly unalterable. So it was very much the lower end of the League for Yeovil and Lee when he took over with the daunting record that since promotion to the higher level in 2016, and adding games played this season, Yeovil Ladies had lost thirty eight out of their last forty one matches and drawn the other three. Then came what was a real red letter day on Sunday last when a single goal gave them victory over Everton and moved them off the bottom of the table, a position now filled by their defeated opponents. A small but hopefully significant upwards step though the next game is away to Chelsea on the 16th but everything has to start somewhere and with a win finally under their belts there will be renewed optimism and hope for Lee and his side. All good luck to Lee and Yeovil Ladies them for the remainder of the season. THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS AND THE WESSEX LEAGUE Continuing our pursuit of the above and the CONCACAF Nations League, the British Virgin Islands, aided by Andover s Josh Bertie and Charles Medway from New Milton, play their third game in the Competition on the 16th November when they are home to Bonaire. The inverted commas are because the Stadium at Roadtown, the Capital of the British Virgin Islands, was damaged in the recent hurricanes and the game is being played on the neighbouring Island some one hundred miles distant of Anguilla. That is apparently the case though there were or are suggestions on the CONCACAF website that Puerto Rico would stage the fixture. Bonaire is another Island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean with a population of around nineteen thousand people, which is registered as a Public body of the Netherlands and as such is not acceptable to FIFA and has no FIFA ranking and therefore cannot compete in FIFA controlled Competitions. Jersey has been battling for some years over the same ruling. Football is not the most popular sport on the Island falling behind Baseball, Windsurfing and Athletics in the pecking order. The British Virgin Islands lost both their opening games in the Competition four nil to Martinique and five nil to Surinam whilst Bonaire have probably fared slightly worse. Their previous two matches, both ostensibly at home but played in Curacao, resulted in five nil and six nil defeats at the hands of the Dominican Republic and Jamaica respectively so something has to give so to speak when they meet. We wish our two representatives and the team well and a safe journey and Anguilla looks an Island that could merit the description idyllic it may not have any claim to prominence in the footballing world but those who have followed Hampshire Cricket over the years will remember Cardigan Connor. The Island s favourite sporting son who took over one thousand wickets for the County in all Competitions between 1984 and 1998 and now holds a prominent position in the Island affairs. Further update in due course. Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 6 of 18

FA YOUTH CUP If Andover Town win at Wingate & Finchley on 15 November they face a trip to Ipswich Town in a 3 rd Round tie. Good luck to them. BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS We are sorry to have to report the death of Baffins Physio Andy Hillman suddenly last weekend, on behalf of the League we extend our sincere condolences to family and friends at this sad time. Andy had many years of experience locally- and was with Moneyfields prior to joining Baffins and was working with the players prior to the Portsmouth sides Buildbase FA Vase win last weekend and will be sorely missed. He was also a former member of the Hampshire FA Disciplinary Panel as well as managing the Moneyfields Ladies team. 8 Whitchurch United 0-1 Newport (IOW) 31 Liam Triggs 7 Southampton Senior Cup 3rd Round Sway 4-2 Fawley AFC? Roy Viner 17, 33, 53 Ryan Brading 90+1 Ben Bolton Mark Lilley SATURDAY MATCH REPORTS John Gorman writes WHITCHURCH UNITED 0-1 NEWPORT IOW DESPITE the heavy rain which fell before kick off the pitch at Longmeadow was in excellent condition and happily there was little further rain during the ensuing ninety minutes as the north of the County seemed to certainly fare better than Southampton on the meteorological front. On the afternoon though the Islanders will have had little concern with the weather, being happier at the end with three points despite losing their goalkeeper at the halfway mark. Both sides kept the game in midfield in the opening stages though the visitors were a little fortunate when keeper Gary Streeter dallied on the ball and escaped with a goal kick before his side scored with the first real attack of the game after just nine minutes. A clearance down the right found Jared Cousins in acres of space, the cross was low and accurate and the ball turned in to the net from the edge of the six yard area by Liam TRIGGS. It was nearly two as a shot from Joe Craig skimmed the far post and after the home side s Corey Cherrett was too high after a determined run, Lewis Wright at the other end saw a free kick acrobatically tipped over the bar by home keeper Josh Cotton. The keeper then clung on to another Cousin s cross after a neat move down the right and the Islander s speed on the break was evident all afternoon. The home side came back with Streeter denying Aaron Randall with a challenge on the edge of his area and then saving a Cherrett shot low to his left before Newport fashioned two more chances as the half drew to a close. Craig fired over a miss in reality before a corner was cleared off the line with Cotton fumbling the follow up before clawing the ball back from the line. The reaction of the Newport players suggested it had crossed the line but there was no response from the assistant referee so just one goal separated the sides at the break. HT 0-1 Newport keeper Gary Streeter had suffered an injury some ten minutes before half time, continuing in obvious discomfort, but did not come out for the second half with Lewis Wright not the tallest member of the side donning the jersey. The first Newport attack after the re-start was halted by the offside flag, fortunately perhaps for the home side as Cotton looked to have handled the ball outside his area, but Whitchurch began to have more of the possession with two corners in quick succession bringing little reward. Gray then showed superb control in bringing down a through ball only to pull his shot across the face of the goal and past the far post. Wright at the other end occasionally showed some eccentric handling but saved well from Gray and did even better in blocking the follow up and was backed throughout the half by his defence, whilst the pace and ability of Craig and Louie Fleming to carry and retain the ball more than helped to frustrate the home side whose attacks too often petered out on the edge of the penalty area. Craig could and perhaps should have made the game safe when he outpaced the defence and avoided Cotton s desperate challenge only to lift the ball over the bar and the home side came closest to an equaliser when a Nick Yeomans effort from some thirty yards struck the corner of post and bar but the half, and game, finished with Cotton leaving his area again to deny the speedy Craig. Whitchurch may feel that in terms of possession they deserved something from the game but the yellow shirted visitors always looked the more dangerous up front, while the home side failed to apply any real pressure on the substitute goalkeeper. The journey back to the Island in probably fairly awful weather was no doubt made a little more palatable by the result and the three points. FT 0-1 Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 8 of 18

Mike Robins writes VERWOOD TOWN 5-2 PETERSFIELD TOWN REMARKABLY the pitch at Potterne held up well after a night of atrocious weather in this part of the world, not helped by short sharp torrential downpours throughout the morning and during the game, both teams put in a good display in the difficult conditions. Early exchanges probably favoured the Rams, cheered on throughout by their Scottish fan- and they had the first real chance on 13 minutes when skipper Will Essai received a good pass from a quick break only to see his shot go wide of the upright. Almost immediately however, Verwood did open the scoring. Ollie DAVIES stroking the ball home from close range after a pinpoint cross from the left side. Some indecision in the visiting defence nearly allowed the Potters to double their lead at the midpoint of the half, with George Richardson nearly getting that second. Petersfield s Matt Rowland was upended clumsily just shy of the half hour mark and a spell of pressure from the Rams around this period couldn t make that breakthrough. A grass cutter from distance by Dean Evans failed to trouble youngster Jacob Orr in the Rams goal. Although the Potters liked to play the ball across the back four in their build ups, tis eventually caught them out just before the interval when a corner was headed home by Jordan NEAL (pictured here). That wasn t the end of the scoring in the first half though as in the last seconds, Orr parried a shot only to see James GUTHRIE pick up the scraps to net from close range. HT 2-1 The equaliser duly arrived just after the hour mark when NEAL collected his double, having earlier had a powerful shot turned away by Ed Tierney. Parity didn t last for long however- with DAVIES restoring the lead for Verwood. Two goals in the final five minutes settling the game for the hosts probably the right result but the score line a bit harsh on the visitors. GUTHRIE grabbed his second from around the edge of the penalty area, slotting wide of Orr after shrugging off a challenge and in added on time DAVIES rounded off his hat trick with a fifth for the hosts. FT 5-2 Connor Steel writes SHOLING 3-1 BASHLEY After heavy rain overnight and another deluge forecast over the afternoon, there was concern that the pitch would become an issue. However, although this forecast was correct the game still went ahead after a pitch inspection a few hours before kick-off. The game was also preceded by a minute s silence for Armistice Day on Sunday, and a poppy wreath was laid on the centre circle in further tribute by Sholing Director Trevor Lewis and Bashley s Keith Hill as Club Secretary Greg Dickson led the reading of the Armistice week end everyone stood in silence remembering those that had fallen in conflicts over the last 100 years. [Photograph courtesy of Ray Routledge] Once the game kicked off, it was Sholing who dominated the first 15 minutes, but sadly did not test the away keeper. Firstly Bradley Targett put Lee Wort through on goal but his shot was saved as he tried to go around the Bashley keeper Jason Collins. Moments later Alex Sawyer broke through on the right but his cross was too close to Collins who got there before the sliding Dan Mason and the attack came to an end. After the Sholing dominance had been safely negotiated, Bashley became more positive in attack and Brad Strickland had a shot saved by Ryan Gosney in the 15th minute. Two minutes later Bashley were awarded a penalty after Dan Munday went down just inside the box as Marvin McLean appeared to have Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 9 of 18

played the ball away. Their striker Dan MUNDAY stepped up and placed the ball down the middle to make it 1-0 to the away side despite Ryan Gosney getting a hand to the ball on its way through. Once Bashley had taken the lead the game hit a lull as both teams cancelled each other out. However Sholing in the last quarter of the half had a spell of dominance that enabled them to level the game at 1-1. On 34 minutes Lee Wort went on a surging run and beating two players shot into the side netting from the corner of the box. Then on the stroke of half time Jason Collins was beaten when a flick on by Dan Mason found Bradley Targett in space and the young striker made no mistake by slotting home from the right. As the first half ended, the scoreline did reflect the game at that point. Although Sholing had arguably created more chances, Bashley had definitely had most of the possession and deserved to be level. HT 1-1 Similarly to the first half, the second half started in yet another blizzard of rain but this did not stop the home side from dominating the first 10 minutes. Sadly they did not create any clear-cut chances in this period, and Bradley TARGETT was booked for fouling a Bashley player as he drove forward towards the half way line. However this was not to deter the young attacker as just three minutes late, he scored to give the home side the lead just before the hour mark. Lee Wort received the ball on the right, before cutting back and forth beating three defenders. He then put in a low in swinger that skidded off the sodden turf and was a perfect height for Bradley Targett, who connected the ball with a diving header into the net. However this joy for TAREGTT was to be short lived just eight minutes after the 2nd goal when he was sent off for a second yellow card after fouling an attacker with a strong tackle that arguably was fair depending on your angle of the incident. Ten man Sholing then dropped back slightly to protect their lead and similarly to the first half, the away side did not create anything despite the numerical advantage on the pitch. Both teams were up for the match in the last 20 minutes, leading to strong tackles on a wet and slippery surface. Sholing dealt with the Bashley rear-guard with relative ease and got their reward in added time when Dan Mason won the ball in midfield. Unfortunately the Bashley defenders had committed themselves forward and this left plenty of room for Dan MASON to run through on goal before finishing from the tightest of angles after he ran around the goalkeeper Collins to notch up the strikers 28th goal of the current campaign. This is how the game finished just seconds after this goal. FT 3-1 Overall the game was an entertaining spectacle in which both teams played well in spells, but ultimately Sholing did enough to deserve the three points despite not being 100%. The Boatmen have now won 12 games in a row in all competitions and they continue this run into Tuesday s cup game against Totton. Finally credit should go to both sets of fans who braved the stormy conditions and there was certainly some very funny banter in the stands. A very enjoyable, but soggy afternoon. The Sholing juggernaut rolled on as they registered their eleventh straight win with a four two defeat of Bournemouth in a thoroughly entertaining match writes John Gorman. Inevitably Dan Mason and Lee Wort were among the goalscorers with the former claiming two and Wort one. One of Bournemouth s goals was scored by River Smith on his debut after signing from Hamworthy to boost an already potent Poppies strike force. Alresford climbed to eighth in the table with a four three victory over AFC Portchester four different scorers for the home side but Bemerton remain in last place in the table after going down two nil at home to Brockenhurst, the Forest side s second win in a row after a run of defeats. The four semifinalists in the Bournemouth Senior cup are now established after the completion of the two remaining quarter final ties, both of which went to penalty shoot outs. Lymington and Hampshire Premier League Sway drew two apiece at the Sports Ground, Mike Gosney scoring twice, before the Sydenhams side went through with a long time servant of Lymington, Darren Ritchie, scoring one of the Sway goals. Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 17 of 18

Hythe & Dibden scored in the last ten minutes to force a draw at Christchurch and not for the first time this season won via penalties with keeper Ellis Grant making something of a name for himself with the number of spot kicks saved. The semifinals will see Bournemouth host Lymington and Hamworthy United travel to Hythe. Three games in the Dorset Senior cup with Shaftesbury continuing their recent form with a three nil victory over Western League Sherborne Town while Verwood pulled of a very good two one win at Hamworthy courtesy of two James Guthrie goals. The third tie saw Portland score in the fourth minute at Poole Town before losing seven one in a game in which AFC Bournemouth loanee Jake Scrimshaw made his debut for Poole and scored the first six goals in a seven one victory. Bashley beat Colden Common Reserves four one in the Southampton Senior Cup but the Aldershot Senior Cup tie between Camberley Town and Alton was postponed because of floodlight problems at Krooner Park. Postponement was the word again on Friday when the weekend got off to a bad start with the Totton & Eling v United Services Portsmouth game called off by the match referee because of pitch conditions. Sadly it was the same again on Saturday as heavy rain at lunchtime, especially in the Southampton area, saw the late postponement of the fixtures at Team Solent in the, together with AFC Stoneham and Hythe & Dibden in. The game between Hamble Club and AFC Portchester was started but succumbed to the weather well before half time. Still seven games played in the and Sholing continued their non-stop winning ways with a three one victory over Bashley - a different name leading the scoring for once with two goals from Bradley Targett after the visitors had initially taken the lead. Alresford s recent run of victories ended with a two one home defeat by Horndean, the latter thereby retaining their second spot in the table, and it has not taken River Smith very long to find his shooting boots at Bournemouth. The newly signed striker claimed all three goals in the Poppies three two win at Shaftesbury. Seven games played in the and Sholing continued their non-stop winning ways with a three one victory over Bashley. Hamworthy scored all their goals in the second half in a three nil win over Brockenhurst and given their recent results both Cowes Sports and Tadley will probably be happy with the point gained in the one all draw at Westwood Park. Lymington have found form again with something of a vengeance and there were five different names on the scoresheet in their six nil win over Fareham, Jake King the only player to score twice. The Creeksiders have now not won in five and have dropped to seventeenth place in the table. With the clash between the bottom two, Team Solent and Bemerton Heath, falling foul of the weather it was a more than useful three points for Christchurch at Andover New Street, James King notching two in their three goal victory. But no changes of note at either end of the table. In, with AFC Stoneham, Romsey and Hythe & Dibden all out of action, Amesbury moved to the top of the table with a two goal win at New Milton whose losing streak continues. Verwood defeated Petersfield five two at Potterne Park a hat trick for Ollie Davies and two for James Guthrie which makes it just one point from the last seven games for the visitors and Matt Bunyan scored both goals in Alton s win over Ringwood Town. Just one goal at Whitchurch which gave Newport the points in a game where they played the second forty five minutes with a makeshift goalkeeper following an injury to Gary Streeter. The remaining two games saw thirteen goals scored, all by the home sides. Follands, who won five nil last week, found the other side of the coin in going down six nil at Downton two goals apiece for TJ Moseley and Matt Steer whilst on the opposite side of Salisbury Laverstock & Ford went one better in scoring seven against East Cowes Vics. Hat tricks for Chae Sykes and Russell Jones and difficult times for Vics who conceded five seven days earlier. As with the no real changes at either end of the table with Amesbury perhaps the only winners on the day. One game in the Southampton Senior Cup and not a good one for Fawley AFC as they exited the Competition four two at Hampshire Premier League Sway. Thanks to all Clubs for commemorating Remembrance Day. Sunday, 11 November /19 Edition #21 Page 18 of 18
