It seems to me that the season has been a very long one already but when you look at the stats we are barely a third of the way through the campaign. We have had an excellent start to the season across all of our teams and the first team pulled off two crucial victories in the last seven days at Cowes Sports and Fareham Town. Let s not beat around the bush we are going for promotion with hopefully some league and cup silverware to be picked up along the way. Our reputation is spreading throughout the nonleague scene and the excellent squads of players we have across all of our teams and our ability to compete with the very best is no longer just our little secret. That means that the pressure is on us to maintain our high standards at all times to ensure we get the rewards we deserve at the end of the season. In Wessex Division 1 we have made the perfect start to the campaign and you can already see who the likely contenders for promotion will be. But there is a long way to go and everyone will be looking to take the scalp of Petersfield now just like we have done with so many Premier Division clubs. We are currently unbeaten in the league and our visitors today are still looking for their first three points of the season. We don t want to become victims of an upset by dropping points today, or in any game for that matter, so it is crucial for our progression that we are fully focused for every game in the long season still to come. 6 MANAGER S notes Plenty of welcomes and well dones needed after another successful week for the club A WARM welcome to Hayling United and their recently appointed manager Neil McNamara. I hope that Hayling are able to return to their over achieving days soon, but obviously not against us today! I personally thought the decision to relegate Hayling last season, after the club had finished well placed in the Premier Division, was uncalled for. Yes, Hayling had failed to put certain measures into place, but with no promotion it seemed the league preferred to have the big boys of Sholing and Winchester in the Premier Division rather than the unfancied so-called smaller club. Just my personal opinion and I truly wish our visitors all the very best for the future. Our visitors had an excellent result against title contenders New Milton last week and I am sure they will be full of confidence coming to Love Lane today. My own boys had a terrific result away at Cowes last week and continued our good form at Fareham on Tuesday. We will not under estimate our lowly visitors today as we look to continue with our push for top spot. I am happy to announce two new signings as Jason Woods and Zac Willis are added to today s squad. Jason has just moved to the area and Zac has transferred from Brockenhurst. May I wish both players a successful time at our club. Another mention is for young Ryan Coker who made his full first team debut at Fareham and was rewarded with two goals. Ryan has a small amount of pressure to emulate his older brother s scoring feats for the Rams but he has certainly started in the right way. The lead up to Christmas sees lots of high profile matches for our lads, but we are all confident that the depth and quality of our club at this time will see us through to a successful season. All the best. However, there was a team playing under the Hayling Island name in Two fixtures are evidenced in the Hampshire football annals both played and reported upon in The second was reported upon in the Hampshire Independent newspaper on November 8, This mentioned a match under Association Rules played at St. George s recreation ground in Portsmouth between Hayling Island and The North Lancashire Regiment. The northern opponents took the honours that day with an emphatic 8-0 win. The first match known to have been played by a Hayling Island team was against the team or club that eventually went on to become Portsmouth FC. Records indicate this match was played on November 15, Despite being on the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing to our near neighbours, who played at the time under the name of AFC Portsmouth, the fixture threw up an even more interesting fact in that appearing for Portsmouth that day was a struggling Southsea doctor who played under the name of AC Smith who became better known as the creator and author of Sherlock Holmes. Teams under the Hayling Island FC name continued to play through until 195 in the Waterlooville and District League, at which time they entered the stronger Portsmouth League. They remained in this League until joining the Hampshire League in season. The end of the 1960s was also memorable for the football club as they wrote themselves into the record books on December 9, 1968 when two teams made up of Hayling Island players played non-stop for six hours. This feat took the world record for the longest game away from South American sides Panoral and Santos. The early 1970s saw the club change it s name from Hayling Island to the current one of Hayling United. With the restructuring of the national football pyramid system Hayling United joined the Wessex League for the season , making their debut away at Ordinance Survey of Southampton. A debut season runners-up spot and the promise of improved facilities ensured promotion to the second division. The season again saw an outstanding on the field effort to again finish runners-up. However, the slow progress in moving to the new ground with the required facilities for the higher division meant promotion was not awarded on this occasion. However, promotion was gained after finishing top of Wessex Division 1 in the season that followed. Through the years the football club under whatever name has played at various sites across Hayling Island. Switching several times between Hayling and Mengham parks before overcoming planning and educational issues to settle at the new ground at Hayling College, where the potential is available to improve the facilities still further. Hayling United s most famous son has to be Bobby Tambling who not only played youth football for the club in the early 1950s but also briefly returned to. 0 9

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. This week we go back to August 1993 and an historic moment at the very beginning of the life of Petersfield Town formed after the demise of Petersfield United. The picture above shows Matt Short wheeling away in delight as he scores Town s first ever goal. Matt needs little introduction to most people around Love Lane as he was first team coach and then manager before Ian Saunders came into the club in 01. Alongside the picture is a report quoting then Town boss Gary Stevens urging people not to get carried away after his side s perfect start to the season. The former Tottenham and England man was speaking after Petersfield went top of the Jewson League following two wins in their first two games of the season. Stevens said: I m very pleased but we must take a balanced view. It s early days and it would be dangerous to be at all complacent. Twenty years on from when those words were spoken, they act as the perfect reminder to keep our feet on the ground this season. RAMS report Rams put two cup defeats behind them with away win Amesbury Town 1 Petersfield Town 5 THE RAMS put the disappointment of back to back defeats well and truly behind them with a resounding league victory. Defeats against Hartley Wintney and Gosport Borough saw them exit the FA Vase and Russell Cotes Cup respectively. But Petersfield continue to progress in Wessex Division 1 thanks to this commanding performance at Amesbury. The home side may have taken the lead but this was Petersfield s most dominant performance of the campaign to date the home side had no answer to their passing game and they were hardly able to get out of their own half in the second period. Amesbury got their noses in front after 16 minutes when a deep cross from the right was headed back across goal by Craig Wheeler and inside the far post. Petersfield were level on 3 minutes when Will Essai picked up the ball, held off two challenges and turned and shot low past the keeper. It was -1 five minutes before half time when more good work down the left saw the ball worked to Joe Richardson, who planted a low shot past the keeper and in off the post. Robbie Tambling missed a penalty at the beginning of the second half before Mike Asare burst through and beat the defence before squaring the ball to Tambling to score. It was 4-1 on 7 minutes when Essai scored from the penalty spot after Asare was brought down and Tambling got his second from close range four minutes from time. Hythe & Dibden Petersfield Town PETERSFIELD had their defence to thank for picking up a point on their travels in Wessex Division 1. Hythe threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Rams during the second half in which they did everything but score. Petersfield had to contest with gale force winds and a relentless home attack which prevented them from breaking out of their own half for large parts of the second period. To their credit the Rams held out for a point but they will feel disappointed to drop points at a ground where three would be expected for a side going for promotion. They got off to the perfect start on six minutes when the ball was knocked on to Will Essai, who chipped the keeper and his shot went in off the under side of the bar. However, a minute later the sides were level again when straight from the kick-off Hythe pushed forward. The ball found Sean Stone on the left and his cross looped over Matt Shortt and into the net. Petersfield took the lead again on 1 minutes when Mike Asare beat the home defence and crossed for Essai, who produced a Peter Crouch-style scissor kick volley to score a fantastic goal. But the home side battled back again and were level seven minutes before half time when a cross was flicked on to Mark Lilley, who had time to shoot back across goal and into the net. If Hythe had been more clinical with their finishing in the second half they would have strolled to victory but blocks from Shortt and his defence also kept them out. 1 17
