Brett Denham (pictured here- thanks to Tadley Calleva for supplying it) bagged a brace for Tadley Calleva in their North Hants Senior Cup semi final win in midweek. The first has been reported as his 200 th for the club. Congratulations to him on reaching that milestone. Newport have chosen Andy Sampson to be their new first team manager for next season. The club received many applications which were of an extremely high calibre. Following interviews, the club deliberated for some time over who would be the best Manager to take the club forward bearing in mind it s plans to relocate to their new stadium. This included the aim to become highly inclusive of all ages genders and abilities within the community. Andy Sampson said: I am pleased to be given another opportunity to manage Newport FC. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead of returning Newport FC back in to the Wessex Premier League. With the new ground on the horizon and a strong youth set the future is looking very good for the club. On the way to the final Stoneham beat two Wessex Premier league sides as well as Southern league AFC Totton so, an upset was always a possibility. During this final at times they were the better side but failure to take their chances arguably proved to be their Achilles heel, whilst Andover s performance may have lacked quality their determination to win this major trophy was always in evidence. 4 Andover made a solid start to the game as Manney Soetan and Harrison Gilkes both went close and twice in quick succession only some desperate defending prevented Andover taking the lead. Stoneham absorbed the pressure well and soon played their way back into the game. They were always quick on the break and it was not difficult to see why they had reached this stage of the competition. They were the more dominant in the later stages of the first half and twice Luke Cairney made fine saves to keep Andover s hopes alive. However it was not all one way traffic and a speculative long range volley by Reece Rusher flew over the bar but was low enough to be considered a chance. HT 0-0 At the start of the second half Andover made two tactical substitutions with Alex Dockree and Connor Cocklin respectively replacing Ben Cook and Joe Chamberlain. The changes had an immediate impact and it was Dockree who neatly set up Rusher would be the first to agree he should have done better with the chance. Andover were now playing much better. Both Glasspool and Gilkes had one on one chances with goalkeeper Scott Williams who pulled off two excellent saves to keep the game alive for his side. At the other end Stoneham were unable to maintain their first half impact with only one real chance created that failed to be a problem for Cairney. As the prospect of a penalty shoot out started to look likely Andover broke the deadlock with just eight minutes left. On the edge of the area Zach Glasspool held off the challenge of two covering defenders before his cross to the far post reached Harrison GILKES who planted his header into the top corner of the net. In the second minute of added time Soetan almost made it two but his pin point free kick was scrambled away by Williams. It was a dramatic end to a dramatic season. Gary Day writes SOUTHAMPTON 6-0 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY T his was the one hundredth Southampton Senior Cup Final and the two teams competing were the young Southampton side and the soon to be confirmed Wessex League champions Blackfield & Langley at St Mary s Stadium. Blackfield had played at this ground recently having been beaten in the Hampshire Senior Cup final against Havant & Waterlooville. The Saints began in a confident manner and pretty much continued in that way throughout the match. They almost took a fifth minute lead when Klarer, up from defence, missed with a close-range header from a Vokins corner. A lovely ball across the face of the six-yard box by Johnson saw no Saints player on the end of it which eventually resulted in a corner and another teasing one by Vokins which Blackfield keeper Snelling punched clear. Tella and Valery made progress on the Saints right and the latter played it in to N Lundulu at the near post but Blackfield skipper Poole marked tightly and blocked. A Saints goal looked a possibility and, on 22 minutes, it materialised with some slick football by the Saints Valery inside to N Lundulu, on to Smallbone then a slick pass to VALERY who, on the right of the box, cheekily stuck it through Snelling s legs. B&L looked to counter and, following a half-hearted appeal for hands in the Saints box, a Griffin chip was saved by Latham. Saints looked for more goals but Snelling was down to save Johnson s low ball in, a counter attack saw N Lundulu s shot lack power and Tella slipped a pass to Rowthorn who helped it on but Smallbone s shot was deflected for a corner. So, Saints were in charge at the break but only one goal in front. HT 1-0 A good B&L move involving Robinson, Plummer and Makhloufi saw the ball returned to Plummer who forced Latham to a fine diving save and concede a corner. But, it was Saints who netted next when Vokins knocked it inside, good feet by N Lundulu and his lay off put SMALLBONE clear to fire low past the keeper. The Saints passed impressively, sixteen were counted on one occasion, but the move broke down on the edge of the box. One further such passing move proved more fruitful as Saints got number three, sub Olomola providing the assist for SMALLBONE to fire high into the net on 74 minutes. It was soon 4-0 and SMALLBONE s hattrick with Slattery passing to Johnson whose incisive low ball into the middle enabled the Saints man to fire high into the net. A rare Blackfield assault saw Poole head a long Josh Smith throw but Latham held it high. However, play soon went to the other end again as Hamblin s pass to Johnson was blocked by Snelling. But this proved to be only Saturday, 05 May /18 Edition #46 Page 4 of 15

5 a brief respite as Valery got to an advanced position on the right and played a low ball in that enabled OLOMOLA to fire high into goal from close range. The score soon became six - Rowthorn to Mdlalose to Olomola to Smallbone and his pass to JOHNSON in the inside-left position went in via the inside of the far post. FT: 6-0. The Saints passing was top drawer and their movement excellent. It will be interesting to look back one day and see where these young players careers will take them. Hat-trick man Will Smallbone was deemed to be the man-of-the-match. It was Saints first Southampton Senior Cup final win since 1984 but, that stated, it was their first entry into the competition since Mike Robins writes BROCKENHURST 1-1 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY T onight saw the Watersiders rightly crowned as League Champions after a long season rudely interrupted by Mother Nature, although on tonight s performance they were pushed all the way by a spirited Brockenhurst side at the Meadens Skoda Arena. Early pressing from the Badgers saw them come close to opening the scoring twice in the first ten minutes with big defender Matt Burt getting his head to the ball, the first was somehow scrambled off the line to safety. Blackfield had a good chance on 12 minutes but Deacon was equal to the effort in the home goal and was able to keep the score 0-0. Meanwhile at the Clubhouse end, the best chance fell to Speechley-Price, a powerful header from a Tickle cross was well saved by Snelling. The first real chance for Blackfield came on 22 minutes when McAllister played in Connor Doe who saw his 25-yard shot palmed away by Deacon. Blackfield were beginning to get on top with Robinson and McALLISTER combining well before the latter contrived to put the ball over the bar from seven yards with the goal gaping, however a couple of minutes later the centre forward made up for his miss by powerfully heading home a Butcher cross from a similar distance to make it 0-1 at the break. The second half was also keenly contested and saw good chances at either end but both defences held firm and neither keeper was seriously troubled. However, on 52 minutes mistakes from Tallack and Bryan allowed Speechley-Price in, but ultimately the pitch won as the striker was unable to keep his feet in the penalty area and the threat was averted. Just after the hour mark a clumsy challenge saw the hosts awarded a penalty that TICKLE converted to draw the game level. Both sides strived for a winner but some resolute defending at both ends kept it at one apiece, Blackfield came close with 15 minutes left when a Plummer header was cleared off the line by Barnes. FT 1-1. Picture right- Ian Hoare presents the Premier Division trophy to Blackfield skipper Sam Poole after tonight s game at Brockenhurst. Saturday, 05 May /18 Edition #46 Page 5 of 15

6 Gary Day writes TOTTON & ELING 5-0 EAST COWES VICTORIA T he final day of the 2017/18 Wessex League season saw a title confirmation in the Premier Division at Brockenhurst whilst, in Division 1, two of the bottom four, Totton & Eling and East Cowes Vics took the field at Millers Park. The Vics included the veteran John Simpkins in their goal on a beautiful sunny evening. Totton started well with Taylor striking a half-volley off the Vics bar and the same player weaved past two challenges but his shot, intended for the far corner, drifted past the post. It was TAYLOR who set the goal scoring ball rolling, collecting it wide on the left he swept past a defender and moved inside, then jinked past another Vics defender before finishing with a shot that deflected in off the diving Simpkins. Lomax headed down and towards goal but Simpkins made the save. However, LOMAX came up for a corner shortly after and again headed the ball down and, this time, the ball drifted into goal, one of his team mates made sure but the Millers defender was confirmed as the scorer by two independent adjudicators (his mother and Mr Bungay, the assistant referee!). Vics tried to respond with a Przespolewski free-kick being pushed away by Fredericks. HT: 2-0. Simpkins made a good save from a further Lomax header set up by Vidler s corner early in the second half whilst, up the other end, Przespolewski tried an overhead effort that drifted past the angle of the goal. Simpkins made a further save to deny Vidler and Pattison drove straight across the Vics goal. A third Millers goal came on 69 minutes when Vidler released PATTISON who ran on and shot home via a deflection off the keeper. Both Connor and Cordeddu came close in the same attack, the former s shot being blocked by a defender and the latter forcing Simpkins to a further save. It was soon 4-0 though, a cross from the left picking up a deflection and coming to sub CONNOR at the far post who struck a low composed finish across goal and into the corner. Now, what a sporting game this was; well at least until 86 minutes when a bad tackle by Vics Browne near to half-way prompted a reaction by home players. It settled and the Vics man was shown the red card and will have the summer to think about missing the start of the next campaign whilst Millers Drake could feel relieved to have not been punished for his actions. Back to the football and there was time for one last goal and it came to the Millers. The free-kick that followed that incident was taken by Pattison and Simpkins spoiled what was otherwise a competent show by coming out to collect but fumbled it and allowed HARRINGTON a simple chance. FT: 5-0. Vics played their part with some decent approach play but produced very little on the Millers goal. Totton finish 14th and Vics 16th. BEEN, SEEN AND MOSTLY ENJOYED. A PERSONAL VIEW OF THE SEASON IN TERMS OF MATCHES SEEN. ALL THE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE PURELY THOSE OF THE WRITER On to OCTOBER with the nights drawing in and winter looming on the horizon and yet another different Competition as Andover Town entertained Western League Division One Westbury United in the Salisbury Hospitals Cup. The Home Club website describes this as a competitive encounter but it seemed anything but to me. Both sides appeared to field far from their usual teams and the whole evening had the appearance of something of a training match with Andover moving seamlessly to a 3-0 victory. This game was played on the 3rd October with the winners earning the right to visit Amesbury in the next round. With the game still un-played come April, Amesbury withdrew from the Competition! whilst as this is written Westbury have every chance of promotion to the Premier Division of the Western League next season. Still not done with different competitions and Whitchurch against Stockbridge in the Andover Open Cup, a notoriously difficult Competition of which to keep track. Nice to meet Stockbridge Officials confident that the Club was back on track after a couple of difficult seasons with aspirations of regaining Wessex League status, but it was Whitchurch who progressed on the night after a 2-0 victory. 7 Next a first visit of the season to Love Lane with Petersfield, newly relegated from the Southern League, facing current Wessex League Champions Portland United. Despite pleasantly warm sunshine it was a poor game on an over-grassed pitch with Portland, much changed in personnel, winning 3-1 in the face of a somewhat eccentric refereeing performance. It is surely not acceptable at this level for the whistle to be blown for offside only to be followed by a shout of play on as the ball goes through to the goalkeeper. The Premier Division again in midweek with Hamble Club the visitors at Amesbury. An enjoyable game in which Hamble s experience shone through with an eventual 3-0 score in their favour despite all the home side s endeavours. The second Saturday of the month and the first meeting between two Clubs who were to eventually dominate the Premier Division all season as Blackfield & Langley visited the Portway for a game that will live in the memory of the 265 people present. It was superb throughout and a credit to players, clubs and match officials alike. Blackfield scored in the opening minutes but were 3-2 down at half time and were always playing catch-up before eventually losing 5-3. At the time I doubted I would see a better match this season and as this is written on the last day of April that has proved to be the case. A mile across Andover for the next game as Andover New Street, who were to enjoy a remarkable season, faced and defeated Premier Division Lymington Town in the Wessex League Cup. The visitors may not have fielded their strongest side but one goal, scored by Jazz Beavis late in the second half, gave the home side a deserved victory on the night. Time for the FA Vase to appear on the calendar again and a first visit of the season to Bashley where Western League Bridgwater were the visitors. A couple of seasons ago the two clubs were crossing swords in the Southern League, so it was a renewal of old rivalries and a strange game that the home side lost rather than Bridgwater won. Each time Bashley scored they then proceeded to concede a soft goal at the other end and one defensive mistake too many in the second half sent the Somerset side in to the next round. Well in to the month now and again the nearest midweek game was at Andover with Hamble Club the visitors in front of another two hundred plus attendance. The first 45 minutes, during which Andover scored the only goal, gave no indication of what was to follow after the break when the home side added a further five goals with Hamble claiming just one in reply. In to Division One next and the always enjoyable visit to Hythe & Dibden for what was an amazing match along with the usual superb hospitality. The visitors were Downton and at that stage of the season both sides had struggled to score goals, but those struggles were forgotten for 90 minutes during which there were good goals, bad goals, comic goals, strange goals and own goals with the final tally being Hythe 6, Downton 5. South Coast Journalism were in attendance so there is a record available somewhere. No shortage of goals in the last match of the month either with Andover Town s visit to Fareham in search of Premier Division points. Fareham scored inside three minutes and deservedly were still in front at the break but, as with the match against Hamble, Andover seemingly moved up a gear in the second 45 minutes, scoring four times including a purple patch of three in seven minutes. A good way to finish a month where ten games were seen and 49 goals scored no shortage of entertainment. NOVEMBER was a bad month in terms of matches seen as health and outside problems restricted the matches watched to just one midweek game but happily every Saturday though, travelling was limited. The month started with a very good Division One game at Alton where the home side came from two goals down to defeat Tadley 3-2. As someone who has always been wary of artificial pitches the games I have seen of late on same have caused me to consider that the surface actually improves the standard of the football. With respect to the teams involved I am not sure as to why I went to the next game as it is rather close to home for a Saturday. It was Whitchurch against Follands in Division One and again, based on memory alone, the visitors possibly scored first before going down 4-1 with Full Time confirming that Jack Ormiston scored a hat trick for the winners. Saturday number three and a journey through the lanes to Alresford for the Premier Division game with Amesbury. Alresford had defeated Bashley 5-0 seven days earlier and made it a double by securing the same result against their Wiltshire opponents. Five different goalscorers in a game well refereed by Mike Taylor. The only midweek visit in the month was to see Andover Town against Bemerton in the Russell Cotes Cup and another entertaining and enjoyable 90 minutes. The visitors arrived with an unbeaten run that stretched Saturday, 05 May /18 Edition #46 Page 7 of 15

8 back over six matches but were never in front on the evening as the home side ran out winners by four goals to two with a hat trick from George Hallahan. And it was back to Andover four days later as Cowes Sports came in search of League points. Three goals came in as many minutes in the first half and basically that was that 2-1 to Andover and little else to stir the blood. The highlight of the afternoon was a presentation to home midfielder Alex Dockree for reaching 150 performances for the Club, a run which the usually erudite tannoy announcer at the Portway said began in 1913! 15 Afew matches spread across the week as the final League fixtures were played and some Cup Competitions reached their finale writes John Gorman On Monday Alresford suffered their second Cup defeat inside seven days when losing 3-0 at home to Tadley in the semi final of the North Hants Cup with Brett Denham scoring twice for the winners, one of which was his two hundredth goal for the Club a remarkable achievement. A handful of League matches on Tuesday with three in the Premier Division and one in Division One. Baffins Milton Rovers came from behind to beat Bemerton 3-1 with two goals from Callum Dart and complete a successful first season at Premier level. Brockenhurst s successful second half of the campaign continued with a 4-1 win over League Cup winners AFC Portchester Mitchell Speechley Price scoring twice but it was a poor end to a very poor season for Newport as they crashed 7-0 at Horndean in their final fixture. Six different scorers for the home side with only Harry Jackson scoring twice. In Division One Fawley bounced back from their Cup Final defeat to beat Verwood 4-1 and, like Brockenhurst, they have enjoyed a very successful second half to the season. At the Portway in front of a very impressive attendance of 382, Andover Town scored the only goal of the game to defeat AFC Stoneham in the Final of the Russell Cotes Cup. In a highly entertaining game the Division One side pushed their Premier opponents all the way and it was not until the final ten minutes that Andover claimed the winning goal. In the last four of the Portsmouth Senior Cup Havant & Waterlooville defeated Fareham 2-0 to set up a Fratton Park Final with AFC Portchester. Cup fixtures again on Wednesday with Blackfield & Langley collecting the Losers medals for the second time after facing higher ranked opposition again. This time it was Southampton in the Southampton Senior Cup- the young Saints ran riot in the second half to secure a 6-0 scoreline. Southampton entered the Competition this year to help celebrate its 100th Anniversary but as to whether they will deign to defend the Trophy next season probably remains to be seen. On the Island a no doubt passionately fought Gold Cup Semi Final at Newport between Cowes Sports and East Cowes Victoria finished 4-3 in favour of the former with James Wykes scoring twice for the winners. So Vics have to wait another year for a Gold Cup Final appearance. And so to Friday and the last two League matches of a season rather protracted by the weather and immense thanks and credit are due to the Fixtures Secretary and Clubs and Officials for getting to this stage. Division One was completed at Totton & Eling where the home side defeated East Cowes Vics 5-0. John Simpkins played in goal for the visitors, his first appearance for them between the posts since 1989, but he could not prevent five different players getting their name on the scoresheet. The final game of the season, perhaps fittingly, confirmed the Premier Division Title would head to the Waterside after Blackfield & Langley s one all draw at Brockenhurst. In fairness they were never going to lose by thirty goals so it was simply a case of rubber stamping the final table. The Gang Warily side have had a remarkable second half to the season at one stage they were sixteen points behind Andover Town and they are worthy Champions. They scored more and conceded less in terms of goals than any other side and that is an undoubted formula for success. Congratulations to all. Mention must be made of remaining games- Bank Holiday Monday sees the Salisbury Hospital Cup Final at The Dell home of Laverstock, where Shaftesbury and Bemerton Heath Harlequins battle it out. A little further ahead, the Portsmouth Senior Cup Final at Fratton Park will be on Thursday 17 May, where our own AFC Portchester take on National League South champions, Havant & Waterlooville in a bid for more cup glory. Finally, in the North Hants Senior Cup, Whitchurch United play host on the 10 th May, when Tadley Calleva and Andover New Street meet up. Saturday, 05 May /18 Edition #46 Page 15 of 15
