5 AWAY day Seaside resort is next stop on away calendar for Rams fans THE NEXT away day for the Rams army is a trip to Bournemouth on Saturday, January 31. Here is a lowdown on how to get there and all the information you need to enjoy another away game watching Petersfield Town. GROUND ADDRESS: Victoria Park, Namu Road, Winton, Bournemouth POSTCODE FOR SAT NAV: BH9 2RA DIRECTIONS: From Petersfield head south on the A3, then on to A27 and M27 past Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton. When the motorway ends stay on the A31 and head for Ringwood. After passing turnoff for Ringwood look out for signs saying A338 Bournemouth and turn off on to this road. Stay on this road until you see signs for the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and the A3060 towards Moordown. Come off at this junction and follow signs for Moordown at roundabout you will be going under main road and taking the third exit. Stay on this road, going past the Castlepoint Shopping Centre, until you come to a roundabout signposted A347 to Poole and the university. Stay on this road, going round a short one way system near a park and eventually you will see Victoria Park Road and/ or Victoria Avenue on your left. Take this road and follow Victoria Avenue. Look for Namu Road on your right and take this turn and go as far as you can along this road before turning right and a road will take you into where the football stadium is. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: This one is a bit of trek but can be done by train and bus. From Petersfield you will need to get a train to Havant, change there and then jump on a train to Southampton Central and then change there and catch a train to Bournemouth. There are then two options. Get off at Pokesdown station and walk to the main centre of Boscombe, where you can catch the number 25 service from Yellow Buses. The stop nearest the ground is Gorsecliff Road and it is about a five minute walk from the ground. The bus leaves Boscombe at 1.50pm and takes around 20 minutes to reach Gorsecliff Road. Alternatively catch the train to Bournemouth station and then at the bus stops outside, catch a bus to Winton Banks. Most buses pass through this area and the walk to the ground is around minutes only. FOOD AND DRINK: Good sized clubhouse at the ground with bar and from memory a tea bar as well. Away from the ground trying heading to the Winton area popular with students at the nearby university, there are plenty of eateries and takeaways along this busy shopping street. The pub at the Winton Banks crossroads is always popular and busy. PAST VISITS: The Rams last played at Bournemouth in the FA Vase in 2009 and lost 1-0 thanks to a late goal for the home side. Other than that you would probably have to go back to the 1990s for the last league visit to Victoria Park. Well, what a game we have in prospect today. Second place versus third place in the table as the promotion race really starts to hot up at the top of the Wessex Premier Division. The game at Winchester back in August was excellent entertainment and I hope we all get to see a similar style of match this afternoon. There will be two good footballing sides out on the Love Lane pitch, although I would quite happily settle for the same scoreline as the previous match a 3-2 victory for the Rams! We are in the middle of a tough run of games against the sides around us at the top of the table and after today we still have to play Follands Sports and Whitchurch United. So far we have come through our current tough run well. The draws at Moneyfields and Blackfield and Langley were excellent results for us. They were two tough matches, both in very different ways, but we proved we had the mental and physical skills to cope in tough situations and we came through both games without giving our rivals anything. Our away support at both games was again excellent. So many of you made the effort to travel away from home and everyone at the club greatly appreciates your efforts it really does make a difference to the players and football management. Today though we need you to show how good you are again. We are expecting a big crowd and we really need to hear you getting behind the Rams. 6 MANAGER S notes Winchester will provide us with tough test but we must remember last game I D LIKE to welcome Winchester City to Love Lane for this afternoon s league encounter. In terms of the context of the Wessex Premier Division and who will win the title, this game is one of the biggest of the season. Both clubs will be looking to win the match and we will have to be at our very best to get a result this afternoon. It seems like a long time ago when we played at Winchester and came home with a 3-2 win back in August. We must draw on our experience of that game and know that we are capable of beating a side like City. They have some great players but that day I felt we matched a very good team, took our chances when they came and took all three points. Last Saturday saw us pick up a 0-0 draw at Blackfield and Langley. I thought we defended superbly throughout the game, although it was one of those days when we didn t do too much in attack. However, it was a good point for us in the current tough run of fixtures we are having to work through. In the league we still have to play Whitchurch and Follands in the coming weeks, who are both in the top six. We also have a Wessex League Cup tie against Winchester here on Tuesday night. We have to keep going in these games at the moment, which means we have to be at the top of our game to get something from them. What can help is your support. It has been fantastic in recent weeks, particularly at Moneyfields where you made yourselves heard. Please keep getting behind the lads it does make a big difference. All the best. Petersfield were due to play Whitchurch United here at Love Lane last week in the Wessex Premier Division but the game was postponed due to the wet weather that day. The game has now been rearranged for Tuesday, February 3. Kick-off here at Love Lane will be at 7.45pm. The home game against Fawley on the first Saturday of 2015 was also called off here at Love Lane. That game has now been slotted back Neal is latest player to sign on Geddes joins youth team set-up A NEW appointment has been made to Petersfield Town s coaching staff for the youth team. John Geddes has become one of manager Andy Field-Millard s coaching team and it is hoped his experience will bring about a change of fortunes for the Hampshire County Youth League side. Geddes enjoyed a playing career in 8 into the fixtures schedule for Saturday, March 28. Kick-off will be at 3pm. Petersfield and Winchester meet again this Tuesday night in the quarter finals of the Wessex League Cup but the draw has already been made for the semi final stage of the competition. The winners will meet Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the last four of the competition. The other semi final will see AFC Portchester play the winners of Horndean v Blackfield and Langley. Petersfield are still waiting to learn who they will play in the semi finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup it will be either Moneyfields or US Portsmouth. PETERSFIELD Town boss Ian Saunders has continued to bolster his squad ahead of a tough month for the Rams. The club have signed Jordan Neal from Wessex Premier Division neighbours Fareham Town. Neal scored over 40 goals in the Hampshire Premier League last season for Locks Heath. He has also appeared for Liss Athletic in the same league competition this season. His goal tally for a struggling Fareham side still reached into double figures this season, and it was his goal which knocked Petersfield out of the FA Vase at Cams Alders. Saunders is hoping Neal s attacking threat will add further to the options he has at his disposal in the first team squad as the Rams continue to push forwards. non-league football as a goalkeeper, mainly playing in Sussex with spells for Midhurst and Chichester during his playing days. He joins the other coaching staff Tom Best and Nawaf Ameir. They will be hoping the change sparks a new spell of good form for the club s youth side after a tough start to their campaign. The football club, which had strong links with Winchester College, made quite an impact in the early years of association football in Hampshire, reaching the final of the inaugural Hampshire Senior Cup competition in 1888 and providing a number of players to represent Hampshire in county-based competitions. Financial difficulties, combined with the indifference of Winchester residents, led to the 1884 club folding in The void was filled by the Winchester Swallows FC. Formed in 1890, the club changed its name to Winchester FC at the start of the start of the season, and again in 1907 when it became Winchester City FC. The club first played in a leaguebased competition in when it entered the newly-formed South Hampshire League. Winchester won the title in this first season, and repeated that feat in each of the following three years. The club joined the Hampshire League in They remained unbeaten throughout the season and won the league s Northern Section. Like a number of other football clubs, Winchester City FC effectively disbanded at the start of the First World War in 1914, and didn t reappear until The late 1920s and early 1930s proved to be a purple patch in City s fortunes. The season saw the club again win the Northern Section of the Hampshire League, and achieve its most successful FA Cup run to date. City reached the fourth qualifying round of the tournament before suffering a 3-0 defeat by Thames FC at the West Ham Stadium. In 1931 City lifted the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time after defeating Andover at The Dell. The 1950s saw a second notable period of success at Winchester City. The side were runners up in the Hampshire League in and they won their first Southampton Senior Cup, an achievement repeated in The Russell Cotes Cup was also won for the first time in After that cup victory and a creditable second spot in the Hampshire League in , the club decided to enter the Southern League for the first time. City survived just two seasons at that higher level, finishing 12th in and 21st in , before electing to return to the Hampshire League. The new millennium ushered in a period of unprecedented success for Winchester City. Promotion to the Hampshire Premier League was achieved in , followed two years later by promotion to the Wessex League. The Wessex League title was secured at the first attempt. That same season witnessed the club s greatest ever triumph. May 2004 saw City face AFC Sudbury in the final of FA Vase at Birmingham City FC and they won 2-0. Season saw City win the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time, beating Aldershot 2-1, and witnessed the club regain the Wessex League championship. 20 9

10 RAMS report Rams bag bragging rights with win in local derby clash 10 Horndean 0 Petersfield Town 1 PETERSFIELD won the bragging rights over their East Hampshire neighbours Horndean with their first derby win in over four years. The last time the Rams enjoyed victory over the Deans was on April 22, 2010, but they enjoyed the upper hand after this win and with it three points which keeps their title challenge in the Wessex Premier Division well and truly on track. No quarter was given by either side in what became a tough, combative clash between the visitors, who are eyeing promotion, and the home side, who are looking to get themselves among the clubs at the top end of the table. The pitch didn t let the game flow. It was a heavy surface which continued to cut up throughout, but the fact the match was able to go ahead at all is credit to the Horndean ground staff following the recent wet weather. Petersfield created the first handful of chances when Warren Hunt found space on the edge of the penalty area but curled his shot well over the top and Danny Thompson received the ball on the right, cut inside his marker but curled his shot straight into the hands of Horndean keeper Derek Harding. Horndean worked their first chance of the game on 15 minutes when Ashley Harris picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and fired in a shot which Rams keeper Matt Shortt had to turn around the post. Mark Smith then burst clear for the home side, took the ball into the box and just as he shaped to shoot, Dan Woodward slid in with a superb tackle to block his effort. Petersfield got their noses in front a minute before the half time interval. The ball was swept out to the right and Thompson s cross was blocked but it was picked up some 30 yards out by Ed Dryden who floated the ball into the penalty area, where Hunt timed his run perfectly to get between two defenders and place his header past Harding and into the far corner of the net. Horndean were always going to have to chase the game in the second half being a goal behind and although they had a number of half chances they were unable to put the Rams goal under any sustained pressure. On 59 minutes they had a good chance to score when Shortt was caught out of position trying to clear the ball. The Deans tried to get the ball back into the six yard box before the Petersfield keeper could recover but Woodward was in the right position to head the ball out. From the resulting corner Woodward again was in the right place at the right time, coming off the goal line to head the ball away at the far post. Petersfield then created two half decent chances of their own to score. A deep cross into the box saw Hunt stretch out a leg to try and force the ball home, and then Andy Todd got the ball from Will Essai on the left and slid a pass through for Dryden to chase but Harding raced off his line to smother the ball. Petersfield had chances to stretch their lead late on. Hunt was sent sprawling by a tackle after he appeared to be clean through and a free kick from Thompson was missed by Alex Ward s head and then Todd slid in but his effort went high and wide of the target. 19

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to January 5, 1978, and Petersfield United lost 3-2 at Mullard Sports in Hampshire League Division 4. The defeat also meant the Rams missed the chance to go top of the table after crumbling against the side rooted to the bottom of the division. United looked jaded from the start of this game but they took the lead after 13 minutes when Mick Wallis lobbed the ball over the keeper and as it was about to go in, player manager Billy Wrighting crashed the ball into the net. However, the home side drew level within two minutes and before United had time to gather themselves they fell behind from a free kick given away by Richard Turnbull. John Goater hit the post and Wrighting was denied a goal which he thought had crossed the line before Petersfield drew level moments before the interval. Wallis floated a free kick into the box and Wrighting soared above the defence to head home the equaliser. United s normally stable defence looked decidedly shaky during the second half when it was put under pressure by the home side s fast breaks. Mullard Sports got the winner on 68 minutes when Neil Codgbrook miscued his clearance to gift a chance to the home side s inside left. Wallis and Wrighting both went close but neither of them could force Petersfield back into the game. RAMS report Rams see off the challenge of another of their title rivals Petersfield Town 4 Newport IOW 2 PETERSFIELD Town brought the curtain down on football in 2014 at Love Lane in perfect style, by seeing off another of their Wessex Premier Division title rivals. The visitors took the lead with the first real chance of the game on 14 minutes. A long cross into the box from the left was headed on by Jake Younie and Jordan Browne waited for the ball to drop before unleashing a shot which seemed to go between Matt Shortt s arms and in. However, the Rams slowly recovered from this early set back and worked their way back into the game. On 22 minutes good build up play in midfield saw Ed Dryden play a quick one-two before unleashing a shot from 25 yards out which was deflected just wide of the post. Petersfield drew level on 26 minutes when a cross into the box was clearly handled by a Newport defender and Warren Hunt made no mistake with his penalty, sending Cameron Farley the wrong way. Newport should have retaken the lead when Scott Jones was put clean through and any shot on target would likely have brought about a goal but he screwed his effort horribly wide of the near post. Andy Todd then had two chances to put the Rams in front. The first saw him meet Will Essai s cross with a downward header which went straight at Farley and the second saw him get in between two defenders but his looping header came back off the crossbar. The Rams hit the woodwork again five minutes after half time when a free kick from the right found Alex Ward and his flicked header hit the crossbar. Petersfield took the lead on 54 minutes in some style. The perfect through ball from midfield found Hunt unmarked on the edge of the area and he turned and shot low into the corner of the net. On 65 minutes Essai almost scored a goal of the season contender when he met a cross from the left with a tumbling bicycle kick volley, in the style of Peter Crouch. The shot initially squirmed under Farley s body but he gathered the ball at the second attempt. It was 3-1 to Petersfield four minutes later when Hunt received the ball on the left hand side of the penalty area. He took the ball to the byline and tried to pull it back but his cross hit Farley, went under his desperate dive and rolled in. Hunt s hat-trick meant he reached the 20 goals for the season mark from 26 matches started. Newport then rallied and Shortt had to be alert to beat away a snap shot from Jones and Browne scooped another effort over when well placed inside the penalty area. The visitors threatened a grandstand finish to the match when they made it 3-2 with eight minutes to go. A cross from the left found Ian Seabrook and he swept his shot home from close range. Although Newport had plenty of possession in the final third of the field they were unable to fashion any chances of note to force an equaliser. In the second minute of injury time Petersfield made sure they would get all three points when Todd s flick across the face of goal was cleared to the edge of the penalty area and substitute Alex Lowley ran on to the loose ball and lashed it into the roof of the net
