Today s game feels a bit strange for me as I have been at a lot of Alresford s cup finals and important games over the last few seasons. My day job of being editor of the Petersfield Post Series means I cover a lot of the end of season cup finals and I have had the pleasure of covering much of Alresford s recent success. Their League Cup final success over Brockenhurst was a great game as far as they were concerned but the night they beat AFC Bournemouth was magical. The Cherries had a side out of one or two senior professionals and young talent from their academy but Alresford swept them aside that night in the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup. I look forward to seeing Magpies chairman Trevor Ingram and his colleagues here at Love Lane this afternoon. It s always a pleasure to have a chat with him about football matters. Tuesday night s game against Moneyfields was another great game here at the Lane. The result showed we are not out of place in the top three places in the division. The other important aspect of Tuesday night was the level of support we received. To get an attendance of 180 on the night was fantastic that was one of the biggest crowds seen here at Petersfield for many years. But if we want to realise our ambitions for this club then crowds of this number will need to be a regular occurance at home in the years ahead. Your support is so vital to our future success. 6 MANAGER S notes We re still smarting from the defeat we suffered in that League Cup final... I WOULD like to welcome Alresford Town to Love Lane this afternoon for this Premier Division encounter. The last time we played Alresford was in the final of the Wessex League Cup back in May an afternoon when we were hoping to add the cup to our Division 1 silverware. That heavy defeat is the stuff of nightmares and we are still smarting from that day. Afterwards we consoled ourselves with the fact that we would be able to play at the Premier Division level this season but it gave us a strong taste of what life would be like at the next level up. The changes at Alresford have been well documented, with their former management team and most of their players moving to Winchester during the close season. Jeremy Stagg and Martin Beck have been given the task of rebuilding the side and while that must have been difficult you can see the signs that things are starting to come together for them again. I was pleased with our performance against Moneyfields on Tuesday night. It was a tough game but we competed well and could have nicked all three points if Toddy s header had gone in right at the end. There is not much good news on the injury list I m afraid. Jake Slater has now joined Jason Silver, Robbie Tambling and Luke Heard on the list. We are without Phil Archbold as well today but I m pleased to see my skipper Alex Ward back in action after suspension. It has been a tough start to October and the month is only going to get tougher but we will be looking to get three points this afternoon. All the best. These are exciting times for the club as we look to push on up the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division table and we have ambitions to continue our climb up the non-league pyramid system. But the Alresford Town we know today started up relatively recently, joining the North Hants Senior League in The Magpies were runners-up in their first season and were promoted to Hampshire League Division 2 in They then repeated the previous season s feat, finishing second and winning promotion to Division 1. Alresford were relegated to Division 2 in 1995, and a year later left the Hampshire League altogether to rebuild in the North Hants League. They rejoined the Hampshire League in 2000, finishing third in Division 2 in They went one place better the following season and were duly promoted to Division 2. After two seasons in Division 1 Alresford gained entry into the newly formed Wessex Division 2 for the season. This became Division 1 in , and the Magpies finished second in their first season, gaining promotion to the Wessex Premier Division. The Magpies finished 21st in their first Premier season, narrowly escaping the drop, but gradually improved, finishing 17th in both and and 15th in both and Alresford entered the FA Vase for the first time in and the FA Cup for the first time in They achieved the biggest victory of the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup in 2008, beating Shaftesbury 8-0. The season brought a massive step forward for the club with a series of fantastic results. Alresford led the league for much of the season, finishing runners-up to Blackfield and Langley with 89 points from 40 games played. The Magpies were unbeaten in league and cup football for a four-month spell spanning December to April, including a run of 17 straight wins. That winning run saw Alresford retain the North Hants Senior Cup and beat Brockenhurst to win the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup for the first time. But the greatest achievement of all came in the Hampshire Senior Cup. After beating Aldershot Town en-route to the final, they took on AFC Bournemouth on their own turf at the Goldsands Stadium and beat them 3-2 to lift the trophy, a rare feat for a Step five club in amongst the higher ranked clubs. Season brought more triumphs. Alresford retained both the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup and the North Hants Senior Cup, and won the Aldershot Senior Cup at the first attempt, beating Camberley in the final at Aldershot Town s Recreation Ground Stadium. Alresford achieved their best ever showing in the FA Vase, reaching the fourth round proper before bowing out at the hands of Hallen. The Magpies again finished second in the league, this time chalking up 97 points and finishing four points behind eventual winners Sholing. At the end of the season the successful team broke up, leaving the new management pairing of Jeremy Stagg and Martin Beck to build an entirely new team. The club has plenty to live up to, but having achieved so much it can hold its head up and look forward with optimism to whatever brings. 20 9

10 RAMS report Nothing to separate top two sides as they battle out draw 10 Petersfield Town 0 Moneyfields 0 THEY were the top two teams in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division before kick-off but the two sides could not be separated during this enthralling match last Tuesday night. Second placed Petersfield took on leaders Moneyfields at Love Lane but the only thing that came between them in the end was Newport IOW their home win against Bournemouth put them up to second and the Rams dropped to third place. Some have said this wasn t the greatest of encounters but it was interesting to see the two styles of the teams and how they fared against each other Moneyfields direct play caused plenty of problems but Petersfield s passing, flowing game always threatened to open up the visitors, especially in the closing stages of the second half. In the first half the two sides traded chances. After 11 minutes Todd broke clear down the right, played the ball inside to Warren Hunt and his lay-off found Ash Howes but as he tried to pass the ball into the net his effort went straight at Moneys keeper Cameron Scott. A minute later and Rams keeper Matt Shortt was scrambling across his goal to keep out a shot by Steve Hutchings and then Shortt had to push Jake Morgan s free kick on to the crossbar after he curled it around the defensive wall from 25 yards out. Alfie Rutherford then shot high and wide of the target after being left unmarked at the far post. A long ball from midfield then saw the Moneys keeper and a defender get in each other s way and the ball fell to Jake Slater on the right but Scott made an easy save as he scrambled back towards goal. On 38 minutes Petersfield went close when Slater picked up the ball on the right and played it inside to Hunt, who helped it on to Danny Thompson but Scott was equal to his curling effort and dived to his left to make a good save. The Rams nearly took the lead a minute before half time when Jamie Ford was left unmarked at a corner but his header clipped the top of the crossbar. Moneyfields almost took the lead a minute after half time when Hutchings raced clear from the half way line but Sean Wain had tracked his run and as he made his way into the penalty area, the Rams defender was on hand to block the striker s attempted shot on goal. Shortt was then called on to make two big saves midway through the half. Rutherford s shot from 25 yards took a big deflection but the Rams keeper managed to change direction quickly enough to make the save. The visitors then broke clear down the left and the ball was then spread to the right into the path of substitute Jake Raine but Shortt spread himself in front of his opponent and blocked his shot with his legs. The closing stages of the match saw both sides trying to attack each other but neither made any real progress further forward than the midfield area. However, two minutes into injury time Petersfield forced a corner and the cross from the right found Todd completely unmarked inside the six yard box. However, he tried to glance his header into the net rather than meet it full on and the ball went across the goal and was cleared. 19

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. This week we go back to November 1987 when Petersfield United were finding life a bit of a struggle in the Isthmian League. The club s 2-0 defeat at home to Chertsey Town meant they continued a poor run of home form which had seen them take only a single point from a possible 15. Against Chertsey they suffered a continuation of their problem of not being able to find the back of the net. Bob Musselwhite went close after 18th minutes when he was set up by Dave Pettit, and Hewitt was then denied eight minutes later by a double save from Petersfield keeper Peter Cottan. Balding then crossed to Manns but he shot narrowly wide before the half came to a goalless end. However, Chertsey took the lead four minutes after the interval when a long ball found Jablonski, who raced away to slot past the advancing Cottan. Bob Musselwhite went close again for the Rams but his shot was saved. Chertsey secured all three points on 84 minutes when Cheeseman volleyed home from close range. Pictured (above) is some action from the game between Chertsey and Petersfield United. The club was also counting the cost of the Great Storm. Temporary repairs were needed to the club s floodlight system to allow evening matches to be played. RAMS report Petersfield s luck runs out as they lose out in FA Vase tie Fareham Town 1 Petersfield Town 0 THE LATE, late show returned for Petersfield for the third Saturday running but this time there was no happy ending. Fareham substitute Jordan Neal struck with five minutes remaining to send the Rams tumbling out of the FA Vase and they can have few complaints about the defeat following a frustrating afternoon at Cams Alders. Fareham should have wrapped this game up long before the 85th minute as they created a whole host of chances in the opening 20 minutes. In the opening minute Graham Lindsey found himself with the ball at his feet only six yards out but Petersfield were saved by the linesman s flag for offside. Good build up play then saw the ball worked up to Liam Bradbury on the edge of the penalty area but he completely missed the ball when shaping to shoot. Simon Woods was then sent clear into the box, he turned inside his marker and his low shot had to be hacked off the line. Wayne Boud then picked up the ball in midfield and was allowed to advance to the edge of the box and unleash a low shot which keeper Matt Shortt got down well to smother. Fareham s best chance of the first half arrived after 14 minutes when Woods was sent clear of the defence down the middle of the pitch but the time he gave himself to shoot allowed Ed Dryden to get back and block his effort. Midway through the first half Petersfield managed to finally get themselves into the game and Dryden s attempted scissor kick at the far post from a cross and Warren Hunt shooting straight at the keeper represented their first efforts. Bradbury then had two chances to put Fareham in front. The ball was pulled back to him on the edge of the area for the first but he hit his shot high and wide of the target and the second chance saw him take the ball into the penalty area, flick the ball over a defender and then force a fine save from Shortt to push his powerful volley over the crossbar. The best chance of the half though fell to Petersfield a minute before half time. A free kick from the right was met by Dryden but his powerful downward header just went wide of the target. The Rams made a brighter start to the second half and Ash Howes had a chance to score on 55 minutes after Jack James and then Hunt worked the ball to him on the edge of the area. He tried to float his shot towards the top corner but only managed to put the ball straight into the hands of Fareham keeper Luke Hutchings. James then had a good chance two minutes later when the keeper and a defender got in each other s way and the ball fell to him on the right. He took his time to shoot which allowed Hutchings to scramble back and easily save his shot. The winner came five minutes from time. Petersfield should have been awarded a free kick for a foul in midfield but the referee allowed play to continue and Fareham swept the ball to the right hand side. The ball eventually found substitute Jordan Neal in the penalty area and he initially lost possession but he won it back as a defender tried to clear the danger, steadied himself and then fired a low shot into the net
