4 HAPPY NEW YEAR! For many Leagues Football is traditional on New Years Day, or the footballing equivalent, and weather permitting it is always possible to find a game somewhere writes John Gorman though sadly not very often in the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) - with Clubs seemingly reluctant to play on the Holiday. So in eight years on the League I ve generally been forced to look elsewhere for some football on the day. Year One was January 1st, 2010 when the Southern League (South and West) provided the entertainment with a trip to see former Wessex League side Thatcham Town beat Bracknell by five goals to nil. This was the middle of a season best classed as annus horribilis for the visitors who lost nine nil at AFC Totton a fortnight later, and won only twice all season scoring just 29 goals in 42 matches and conceding 187. Inevitably they were relegated to the Hellenic League whilst Thatcham finished twelfth in the table. January 2011 and a game on the 3rd and again in the Southern League South and West. This time The Portway was the venue with the old Andover losing three nil to Hungerford. The visitors went on to finish seventh AFC Totton were Champions but Andover finished 21st, fifteen points adrift of the Club above them. Effectively they finished bottom as Bromsgrove Rovers failed to complete the season but were therefore regarded as the relegated Club with Andover reprieved. A decision that did not really do them any favours in the long or short term. It was back to New Years day twelve months later and the only Wessex League game to feature in this round up with a trip to Bonnymead Park to see Amesbury host Verwood Town in a Division One fixture. Why it was played that day I know not but it was certainly entertaining with the visitors, who were to be Champions at the end of the season, four points ahead of AFC Portchester, winning 6-3. Amesbury were in fourteenth place come the final countdown. On to 2013 and again the 1st January and a trip to see Sholing take on Winchester in the Southern League South and West. This was Winchester s final, and disastrous, season in the Southern League at that time as the Club was simply run down to virtually nothing. Inevitably they finished bottom, some eleven points adrift, whilst Sholing finished 7th but withdrew at the end of the season because of ground grading problems. All rather sad looking back on it meant a return trip to Thatcham, still in the Southern League South and West, and a local derby with Didcot. The home side won two nil on the day but did not enjoy the best of seasons finishing 19th with Didcot in twelfth. There was however a Wessex League connection on the day with two of our current Match Officials taking charge of the Assistant Referee duties. A journey into the Forest on New Years Day in 2015 to see Bashley v Sholing, again in the Southern League South and West. Memory recalls that it was a dull, damp, dismal day and the football very much matched the weather it was a poor game that ended with a goal apiece. Neither Club equipped themselves well in the League with Sholing finishing seventeenth and resigning again - whist Bashley finished bottom some fourteen points adrift. However with Sholing resigning and Clevedon demoted because of ground grading problems, Bashley were reprieved. As with Andover some four years earlier it was a decision that was not perhaps for the best. 2nd January 2016 and a first-ever New Year dip into the Hellenic League albeit at Thatcham. The visitors were from the lovely Town of Lydney in Gloucestershire and given that Thatcham were to finish runners up at the end of the season, to Kidlington, they performed well in an entertaining game that finished four three in favour of the home side. Lydney eventually finished the season in mid table. The last of the games is again in the Southern League South and West and AFC Totton versus Winchester. On a crisp sunny afternoon, ideal for football, Winchester dominated the proceedings from start to finish to run out three one winners. The downside to the afternoon was an extremely eccentric refereeing performance that sadly saw some eight or nine cautions with not a bad tackle in sight. Both sides finished in the lower half of the table with Hereford finishing eighteen points ahead of anyone else to take the title. And 2018? Again, sadly not in the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) but where is yet to be decided. Sunday, 31 December /18 Edition #29 Page 4 of 11

Solent included three of their under- 18 players in their starting line-up and five others were named on the subs bench. Bournemouth, on the other hand, included ten of the twelve that played in their previous match. This game had been a goal-less draw in the last two seasons and, add to that, another 0-0 in the league at Test Park earlier in the campaign the outcome might just have been a tad predictable. The pitch was damp and bumpy. Ohameje picked up a first minute yellow card for a bad tackle on Solent s Orvis (and the only one of the game). Saadi tried a shot from just outside the box for the Poppies but it was deflected clear for a corner. Solent won a corner and Ethan Taylor s flag-kick was partially cleared and fell to Jack WILSON whose firm low shot from outside the box went all the way into the corner of the net to give Solent a 17th minute lead (and, at last, a goal in this fixture after 197 minutes of trying!). It was the midfielder s first goal for Team Solent. There should have been more goals for the visitors as an Orvis shot from a further Taylor corner caused problems, but the Poppies eventually cleared, whilst a fine Taylor pass provided Mitford with a chance, but Sunday, 31 December /18 Edition #29 Page 10 of 11
11 he just failed to control the ball and it went begging. Taylor just failed to direct the ball home with a closerange volley and Willis-Dellimore was found by an Olumuyiwa pass and his chip just went the wrong side of the far angle. Solent created much more but only had the one goal to show for it at the break. HT: 0-1. Into the second half and a teasing Orvis cross was well headed clear by Poppies Speers. The home side showed more desire to get forward in this half. This eventually paid off with an equaliser on 62 minutes when Ohameje s cross from the left went over a Solent defender and was controlled well by BATISTA who fired home from close range. Solent looked to regain the lead, Orvis stabbed effort was deflected clear and Black s header from close in went over, but there weren t as many Solent opportunities in this half overall. Ohameje got forward to nod down a free-kick for the Poppies but the ball drifted wide whilst Solent keeper Collins was called upon to make a diving save to deny a firm and distant effort by Jamie Wilson. FT: 1-1. Solent will rue missed opportunities, particularly in the first half. The teams sit in 16th and 15th in the Premier Division table respectively following this game, with identical playing records. Although this fixture has at last produced some goals, it finished with a rather foreseeable outcome another draw! Abad start to the week, especially for those on the Island, as the only scheduled fixture on Boxing Day Newport v Cowes Sports fell foul of a waterlogged pitch. AFC Portchester opted for Friday night football for the second week running but hopes of emulating last week s high attendance were dashed by the weather and the game with Horndean was called off early in the day. The weather gods relented slightly on Saturday with only five matches postponed which was a far lower figure than expected and neither of the two teams at the top of the Premier Division were affected as both Andover Town and Blackfield and Langley added three more points to their totals. Andover defeated Alresford five two at the Portway in a game that featured four penalties, three for the home side, and all four were converted with Zach Glasspool and Mike Gosney claiming two goals apiece in front of 237 spectators - the highest attendance of the day. Blackfield travelled to Hamble Club and came away with a four goal victory with four different names on the score sheet. Lee Wort claimed the only hat trick of the day as Sholing regained third place with a six goal demolition of Petersfield and there was another high attendance at Lymington for the local derby with Brockenhurst but on the day, it was honours even as neither side could muster a goal. Portland too attracted a good crowd 163 and ended their long sequence of drawn games but not in the manner they would have wished as visitors Bashley scored twice WEEK 22 ROUND UP with John Gorman without reply to take the points. Shaftesbury defeated Amesbury by the odd goal in five with a late winner that was adjudged offside by the Assistant but not by the Referee and with the games at Baffins and Fareham being off the final game at Victoria Park between Bournemouth and Team Solent finished all square with a goal apiece. The six games scheduled for Division One were reduced by fifty per cent with the matches at East Cowes Vics, Fawley and Tadley being postponed and Andover New Street took advantage of the last named being inactive by returning to the top of the table after defeating Downton four one. Christchurch took their unbeaten run to thirteen and climbed back to second place with a three one win at New Milton. Another three figure crowd saw Steve Flynn take his tally for the season for the home side to twenty. Goals at Ringwood as well with Brad Gale scoring twice for Verwood but to no avail overall as the home side eventually came out on top by the odd goal in seven. So as we move in to 2018 Andover rules the roost with the two senior Clubs in the Town topping the two Divisions. Andover Town have a six point advantage over Blackfield and Langley who in turn are ten points clear of third place Sholing whilst New Street hold a two point advantage over Christchurch with it being a lot tighter at the top of Division One where seven points cover the top six Clubs. Happy New Year to all. Sunday, 31 December /18 Edition #29 Page 11 of 11
