October is going to be a busy month and a vital month as far as our season is concerned. We are still involved in five cup competitions and due to that we will be playing midweek games every week throughout this month at least. It s a nice problem to have and it is clear evidence of the great start we have had to this season, where every game has been won except for a defeat in the FA Cup and a draw in Wessex Division. I am sure at the end of this season we will look back on October as being a defining period as far as our hopes of promotion and silverware are concerned. We have eight matches to play this month and we got off to a solid start in the first one the 6- win at Andover New Street on Saturday. While I m sure there will be plenty of focus on the cup matches which include an FA Vase tie and the visit of a Conference South side to Love Lane we also need to ensure we get maximum points from the three league games we are due to play. We are playing catch up in Wessex Division so it is vital we keep picking up three points in every game. However, looking ahead to a month packed with cup matches we also want to go into November still in as many of the five cup competitions we are still in. It has to be said that we are capable of winning all eight games as we have a fantastic set of players at the club this season. But the key is going to be keeping our focus for each game, and that starts with tonight s cup tie. 4 MANAGER S notes I still have nightmares about the game at Fleet Spurs last season when we lost I D LIKE to welcome Fleet Spurs to Love Lane for this evening s game. Following the loss of their manager during the summer it was refreshing to see a young player-manager take the helm. I would like to wish Sam all the very best for the future in his new role with Fleet Spurs. I still have nightmares from our visit to Fleet last season when we dominated the game for 8 minutes but Fleet stole our points with three late goals to win the game 4-. Tonight s game will be a tough fixture but also a chance for both teams to take a breather from league action and try and enjoy the Hampshire Senior Cup competition. This fixture is the first midweek game of many to come in the next five weeks for us. This month may very well shape our season as we have a number of cup games against higher opposition. We face Conference South side Gosport Borough in the Russell Cotes Cup, a trip to Hartley Wintney in the FA Vase and we are away to Premier Division side Fareham Town in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. Anyway, first of all we need to focus on tonight s game and try to ensure we win our way through to the next round. Good luck to the lads for tonight and with continued hard work and endeavour, who knows what we can achieve on the back of an excellent set of results during October. The Rams added Fawley to the list of Premier Division sides beaten in cup competitions so far this season which also includes last season s champions Blackfield and Langley and Totton and Eling. Again Ian Saunders side did not look out of place against opposition from a higher division and Fawley struggled to keep up with Petersfield s flowing game. In the end the game was settled by a moment of individual brilliance from Town s top scorer Mike Asare. On 7 minutes, the ball was fed to Asare on the right wing and he ran through from about 5 yards out before sliding a low shot inside the keeper s near post. In truth there should have been lots of goals in this game as both sides had plenty of decent chances. Petersfield had a clear penalty not given in the opening minutes when Steve Cammack was brought down in the box and Robbie Tambling could have netted a couple his chipped shot from Matt Shortt s long throw out was cleared off the line, as was his attempt to slide in on Jack James cross. Fawley s main chances of scoring came on the counter attack. Keeper Shortt had to stay alert to turn aside a shot from Ben Murphy and in the second half Joe Richardson scrambled Zac Anderson s effort off the line. Petersfield Town 4 Team Solent 4 JUST how significant this result could prove to be in the Wessex Division promotion race was not lost on Team Solent s manager. After Callum Coker s penalty brought the scores level in the ninth minute of injury time, the visiting coach sat his players down on the pitch and left them in no uncertain terms that they may live to regret the two points they had just dropped in this goal-fest at Love Lane. Rams boss Ian Saunders was relieved that his side stole a point from what was a disappointing display from his men. Perhaps it was a sign of how far his side have come since last season when Team Solent did the double over the Rams. The post-match feelings could have been so different after Joe Richardson s header bounced in off the post in the first minute of the match. Team Solent equalised after 8 minutes though when a shot cannoned back off the post, hit keeper Matt Shortt and bounced into the net. The students made a lightening quick start to the second half, scoring in the first minute, and, after missing a penalty, went - on 5 minutes, thanks to what looked clearly like an offside goal. However, the Rams battled back again with two goals in three minutes midway through the second half. Richardson s cross from the left bounced in off the post and Phil Archbold s cross from the right looped in over the keeper. Team Solent thought they had won it on 78 minutes when a shot from the edge of the box was deflected in. 5

THE ORIGINS of Fleet Spurs Football Club can be traced back to 948, shortly after World War Two, when a group of young footballers began playing friendly matches in the Fleet and Aldershot area. In 95, Fleet Spurs FC first gained admittance to Aldershot and District League. The first club badge was a cockerel on ball, the same as for Tottenham Hotspur. Club Colours were originally black and white but they changed to red and black stripes and eventually became the present red and blue. Tradition holds that Fleet Spurs FC was formed as a reaction, or an alternative, to the long-established semi-professional Fleet Town FC. This was to provide an amateur football club for local players with a strong social environment. The first honours were awarded in 95-5, when Spurs were Hants Junior Cup B winners and Aldershot Junior Cup winners. From the Aldershot and District League, the club moved briefly in to the Hampshire League, North Hants Division, and then effectively the Fourth Division of the county. After winning various league and cup honours with the Aldershot and District League, the reserves were formed in 965. From 965-7, Spurs first team had a spell in the Surrey Premier League, B and then A division, becoming League A champions in and cup finalists in The first team returned to the Aldershot and District League from 97, where Spurs have continued to field teams to the present day. The A team was formed in 977 and the B team in 99. A period of almost continuous league and cup honours flowed from 979-9, with significant achievements at first, reserves and A team levels. For the first team, this period included four seasons as Aldershot Senior League champions and three as runners-up. Then in 99, as dual Aldershot Senior League champions and Peter Bunyon Cup winners, promotion was gained to Hampshire League Division. The first team progressed to become Hants Division champions in 998. They then played two seasons at the highest Hampshire League level, finishing sixth before being demoted immediately down to Division for failure to meet the new Hampshire League grounds standards. Significantly, in 99, Fleet Spurs FC formed an association with Fleet Spurs Youth FC. In, led by manager J Winter, the B team became established as a veteran s side in the Aldershot and District League Division. Particular mention should be made of Eric Heanes, loyal club servant in many official and unofficial roles. In, Eric was honoured by Hampshire FA in recognition of over 4 years of service to football with Fleet Spurs. In , the club moved to play football at the new 56, Hart Council development at Kennels Lane, Southwood. The 9- season saw Spurs begin to re-establish themselves in senior football. Bryan Sheppard was appointed chairman and under manager Neil Baker Spurs finished third in Wessex Division. The reserves were crowned Aldershot & District Senior League champions. 6 9

10 RETRO rams CLUB membership EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to December 9, 99, and the Post s report on Petersfield s record attendance for a league game. A crowd of,65 crammed into Love Lane for the visit of Aldershot Town in the Diadora League Division the Isthmian League. It was the season when Aldershot and Petersfield found themselves playing at the same level of football after the Shots were demoted from the Football League. As you can see from the Post s picture above, the ground was packed with supporters with some even trying to climb the floodlight poles to get a better view. Aldershot took the lead after minutes through Shaun May and Mark Butler scored twice in four minutes at the start of the second half to end any hopes of a Petersfield comeback. Included in the Petersfield line-up that day was current committee member Paul Ryan. The Petersfield team that day was: Parkins, Parvin, Spencer, North, Yates, Latham, Head, Ryan, Vaughan, McInerney, Rimmer (Lineker). Sub: Lothian.
