Will Harris notched a hat trick for AFC Stoneham midweek. With one team scorer details awaited, four Hat Tricks on Saturday- Zach Glasspool (Andover Town), Sami Makhloufi (Bournemouth), Mitch Speechley-Price (Brockenhurst), Emerson Tattersall (Newport IOW) Our Sydenhams League colleagues AFC Portchester look to progress to the 3rd Qualifying Round for the first time this season. Last outings in the 2 nd Qualifying Round- 13/14- lost at Cirencester Town 15/16 lost at home against Brockenhurst 16/17 lost at home v Merthyr Town Good luck lads! Bob Purkiss writes. As part of this seasons development programme, four clubs have been selected for special attention. One of them is Alton FC, with a particular interest in community engagement and inclusion. I would just like it to be known that they have implemented a "NO SWEARING" policy and the Chairman Jim McKell, has made it very clear that he intends to enforce it. I quote from his programme notes and his notice in the ground. "We have a responsibility to set high standards and we are developing a program of improved attitude in and around the club in general and on match days. This includes a NO SWEARING policy. YES, it can be done. All players, coaches and spectators are expected to comply, throughout their stay with us" I observed the match against Christchurch, where many young people and families were present. With the significant exception of the Christchurch goal keeper, the lack of unacceptable language was very noticeable. So the Chairman is correct. IT CAN BE DONE, if it is led, and enforced from the top. Why cannot all our clubs be as responsible as Alton? Sunday, 10 September /18 Edition #13 Page 1 of 14

2 BOURNEMOUTH SENIOR CUP There is a new Competition on the fixture list this season for those Wessex League Clubs affiliated to the Bournemouth FA in the shape of the Bournemouth Senior Cup. New in the sense of today, but not new overall as the Competition dates back to 1952 but has not been held continuously over that time with this being the first staging of same since The initial winners back in those far off days were Bournemouth Gasworks who sadly became defunct some twenty years later. Bournemouth Gasworks will also be remembered by Saints fans of a certain vintage as the starting point in the career of one Derek Reeves, who scored in excess of 150 goals in less than 300 matches whilst at the Dell, helped immeasurably by the skills of Terry Paine and John Sydenham on the wings. The Competition has been held on 44 occasions with twenty-six different winners, some of whom like the aforementioned Bournemouth Gasworks, sadly no longer exist or do so in a different form. Clubs such as Queens Park, De Havilland Sports, Twynham FC, BAC FC, Cranleigh FC and the wonderfully named Trinidad Bluebirds whilst the current Holders of the Trophy are Bournemouth Electric, winners in both 2003 and Happily, they are still competing in the Bournemouth Hayward Saturday League and will therefore be able to defend their Trophy though they face a stiff task with a trip to Lymington in the First Round. Of the current Sydenhams Football League Clubs, and there will be six in the Competition this season, Christchurch have been the most successful with their name appearing on the Trophy five times though surprisingly not since nineteen seventy. The winners over the most recent years of the Competition have tended to be Bournemouth League sides suggesting perhaps, with respect, that the more Senior Clubs have not been involved since Bournemouth Reserves- presumably Bournemouth Poppies triumphed in 1996 with Verwood the winners twelve months earlier. Both Bashley and Ringwood have four wins to their credit with three to Bournemouth, two to Verwood and one apiece to Downton and Lymington FC. Of the non-wessex Clubs Bournemouth Electric and Bournemouth Civil Service top the list with both having taken the Trophy on three occasions. Fourteen Clubs went into the hat for this season s Competition spread across the spectrum of football in the Bournemouth area with the outcome as follows: - BASHLEY v Bournemouth Manor BROCKENHURST v Hamworthy Recreation DOWNTON v Bournemouth Sports HAMWORTHY UNITED v Lower Parkstone CFC LYMINGTON TOWN v Bournemouth Electric Poole Town v Westover Bournemouth Byes VERWOOD TOWN and Sway. Plenty of scope for some giant killing and most of the above fixtures will be played in September with the results appearing in the Newsletter. Good luck to the Competition and all competing in same. Thanks to Ian Claxton for his help with the above AFC Stoneham finished their midweek game at Verwood fielding six players aged 18 or younger, with a full debut awarded to 17 year-old Josh Rose. Our sponsors, Sydenhams- have just issued a new Bumper Blue Book, it s their Autumn edition and will be effective until the end of November. It s also their last one of the year. Please visit their site and check out their offers! CLUBS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY MUST USE THEIR ELECTRONIC SUBSTITUE BOARDS AT ALL GAMES. Sunday, 10 September /18 Edition #13 Page 2 of 14

12 SATURDAY MATCH REPORTS John Gorman writes EAST COWES VICTORIA 1-3 CALNE TOWN Vics exited the FA Vase at the first time of asking as Western League Calne Town scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half, during which the home side were also reduced to ten men, and whilst there was no lack of effort by the home side for the remainder of the game the tie was out of reach. The visitors, backed by a good travelling support, started the brighter and home keeper Cameron Farley was forced to go down at a forward s feet after some confusion with his defence over a back pass. A soft free kick in a dangerous position was totally wasted by Calne, as was a similar one sixty seconds later, before Vics mounted their first meaningful attack. Liam Newbold won the ball in midfield, Jordan Browne s clever pass continued the move and Jimmi Burton s shot was deflected for a corner. The same player was too high after a fine run and cross by Ji Nash and the Vics were enjoying more of the game, though Farley had to cling on to a cross in a crowded area, before Browne and Burton combined again to test Cameron Shipway in the visiting goal. The referee, who was consistently inconsistent throughout and to whom physical contact was largely an anathema, issued two cautions for what were little more than collisions before Vics spell of pressure, during which a looping header from Burton came back of the angle of post and bar, resulted in a goal - unfortunately at the other end. Calne won a corner and though Farley superbly clawed away a header at the far post the defence could not get the ball away and after a bout of head tennis in the six-yard box Stuart WINDSOR headed home to put the visitors ahead. Sadly Calne full back Jake Brand suffered a blow on the head in the melee that preceded the goal and departed the field looking concussed. All present will hope that the recovery is swift. This was midway through the half and play was then largely confined to midfield for a spell before Vics came forward again with Burton being stopped by weight of numbers and then given offside after fastening on to a Nash through ball. The call was very close and would perhaps been more acceptable had the Assistant been in line with the last defender. Calne were too often over hitting the long ball whilst Vics could find no end result to their pressure and the half finished with no addition to the score. The rain that had been promised all afternoon arrived with a vengeance along with the half time whistle but happily had passed on before play recommenced. Calne wildly over hit a corner and the referee added another name in his book before, with just eight minutes played, the visitors increased their lead with a goal that was very much out of keeping with the game in general. Midfielder Billy GLEED picked the ball upon the right, cut inside, and curled the ball left footed past Farley from outside the area. Before Vics could pick themselves up they were three down and a man short. A long run by William Boakes was stopped by a challenge by Keiron Ford on the edge of the area with a penalty obvious outcome. There was always a feeling, given the referee s outlook on the game, that there would be a red card before the end of the afternoon but in fairness he probably had no choice. WINDSOR drove the penalty low past Farley and Vics suddenly had a mountain to climb. Windsor then wasted a chance of a hat trick when he turned a low cross over the bar from inside the six-yard area before the home side, with the last throw or last throws of the dice, made a triple substitution. Visiting defender Tom Boakes saw an effort cleared off the line from a corner before the most ludicrous caution of many saw a caution for a player after the ball had struck the referee. The player simply threw his arms in the air in exasperation which was presumably classed as dissent. With little more than ten minutes left Vics, who certainly never gave up despite the numerical disadvantage, got some reward for their efforts as BROWNE fastened on to a long ball, held off two defenders and slid the ball past the advancing keeper. But there was never going to be a late comeback and after one more booking justified - it was a cynical trip by the Calne defender - the game drifted to a close in bright sunshine. The first ten minutes of the second half saw Vics downfall but overall on the day the right side won though the overriding feeling was how did a game that had only one bad challenge, and was played in commendable spirit, justify so many yellow cards. Finally, the ground at Beatrice Avenue was decreed to be used for football by Queen Victoria and is still Crown Land. Rather fitting therefore that the regally named Stuart Windsor should score two of the goals. Sunday, 10 September /18 Edition #13 Page 12 of 14

13 Keith Legg writes SHOLING 2-0 ALRESFORD TOWN Sholing got back to winning ways with an excellent all-round team performance to defeat Alresford and gain some revenge for the Cup defeat at the start of the season. Dan Miller scored just before half time and substitute Lee Wort made sure of the 3 points with a goal on his 350th club appearance. Sholing looked the sharper as the game got going and almost took the lead on 8 minutes when Byron's header from a corner was headed off the line with the follow-up shot by TJ Cuthbertson also being hacked clear of the goal line. Boatmen were moving the ball around at pace and Barry Mason slid a nice pass into Jamie Bulpitt to run onto, but his left foot shot was straight at the keeper. The visitors were playing with a high line and Dan Mason looked to have broken it to run clear, but a late flag saw the normally calm D-Dan upset with the decision and he got a yellow card for kicking the ball away. Bradey Norton was doing well coming in from the left and he firstly set up Barry Mason for a shot that was well blocked and then Norton tried his luck after cutting past two defenders, but his shot across goal went narrowly wide. Alresford were not troubling the Sholing defence and as the game approached half time, the Boatmen got the goal to reward their dominance. A left side corner by Hubbard evaded first Norton and then Byron Mason in the 6-yard box, but spun into the path of Dan MILLER at the far post to prod over the line. HT 1-0 Second half started with a harsh looking booking for Byron for a routine tackle in the centre circle. On 48 mins, Barry Mason hit a defence splitting pass to Cuthbertson breaking forward, as the keeper narrowed the angle, the right back attempted to chip him, but couldn't get the height on his effort to clear Kempson. Alresford had loud appeals for a penalty turned down by the referee as their player took a theatrical tumble in the box as Dan Miller made a clearance. Dan was causing problems for Alresford every time he went forward and on two occasions he headed goalwards from corners, one saved by the keeper and the other inches over the bar. Ryan Gosney was finally tested on 64 mins when a low side footed shot that was heading into the bottom corner, was pushed round the post at full stretch by Gosney. As the game entered the final 15 minutes, Sholing went looking for the killer second goal and went desperately close with two efforts in a minute. Firstly, Lee Wort, who had just come on, hit a fierce shot from 18 yards that the keeper beat up into the air and as it landed, it spun back towards goal, but just past the upright. Then, from the corner, Barry Mason did well to get to the by-line and cut the ball back to Dan Miller who connected with a half volley that smashed against the bar. On 79 minutes, Sholing made the game safe. Lee WORT was put clear and he raced in on goal, going past the keeper, but with a defender about to make a challenge, he checked back onto his right foot and smashed into the net from 16 yards. Cuthbertson had to head an Alresford effort off the line, but Sholing were able to comfortably see out the final 10 minutes and could have added to their total with Lee Wort going close twice. A deserved win and a good performance, with every player putting in a shift. WEEK SIX ROUND UP with John Gorman N ot so many midweek fixtures but a variety of Competitions covered in the games played. In the AFC Portchester followed up their FA Cup win (and notification of a trip to Truro in the next round) with a seven-goal defeat of Newport on the Island with two goals each for Bobby Scott and Andy Todd. Newport have now conceded sixteen goals in their last four games without scoring a single goal in reply and badly need a change of fortune. A heavy away win in the only First Division fixture as well with AFC Stoneham moving up to fourth place in the Table after a Will Harris hat trick helped them to a five-goal victory at Verwood. Harvey Jackson scored both goals for Horndean in their Hampshire Senior draw at Lymington, with his side then going through on penalties, whilst Hythe and Dibden came from behind to beat a youthful Sholing Reserves side in the Southampton Senior Cup with two goals from Rian Drake. Lastly on Tuesday Hamworthy United had the honour of staging the first tie in the resurrected Bournemouth Senior Cup and defeated Bournemouth League side Lower Parkstone ten nil. It was only the visitors second competitive game of the season and they perhaps did not help themselves with two own goals which added to the five scored by the Sunday, 10 September /18 Edition #13 Page 13 of 14

14 home side s Mark Ford. The First Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup was finally completed on Wednesday with Alresford defeating Andover Town five one with two more goals for Steve Hall. The other game on the evening saw Follands exit the Southampton Senior Cup as Totton and Eling found some away form with an emphatic four nil victory at Hamble. A much truncated League programme on Saturday due to the FA Vase allowing Blackfield and Langley and Sholing to move further ahead at the top of the. The Waterside Club made it eight wins out of eight courtesy of Jamie White s two goals against Team Solent at Test Park, whilst Sholing avenged an earlier defeat in the FA Cup with a two-goal victory over Alresford Town. Bashley won for the second Saturday in succession, two one against Portland with both goals coming from Kabba Jack, while Bournemouth, with only three goals to their name from their first seven games, scored five without reply at Cams Alders against a Fareham side who seem currently to have lost their way. Three goals for Sam Makhloufi and two for Eder Batista. Just three games in with Christchurch moving to the top of the table after defeating Totton and Eling, whose lack of away form returned, seven one at Hurn Bridge with two goals apiece for Max Wilcock and new signing Richard Gillespie. Downton climbed to fifth place, scoring three without reply against Weymouth Reserves and Mark Corbett came off the bench to score twice in Alton s four nil victory at Whitchurch. A very satisfying day for the League in the FA Vase with fifteen Clubs progressing to the next round, albeit nine in ties with fellow Wessex League Clubs. But in the eight ties against foreign opposition it was six wins and just two defeats. Starting with the all-wessex ties Amesbury notched only their second win of the season with a three-goal defeat of New Milton and Baffins came back to form with a hard won three one victory at Cowes. Hamble Club, with two goals from Nathan Lynch, defeated Bemerton for the third time this season while Hamworthy proved too strong for AFC Stoneham winning five two at the County Ground. Sadly, no news of the scorers. A dramatic finish at Horndean where the home side converted a penalty in stoppage time in extra time for a four three victory after the scores had been tied at two all at the end of ninety minutes. Hard luck on Andover s Zach Glasspool who scored all his side s goals. Extra time too at Shaftesbury with Brockenhurst eventually coming out on top by five goals to four with a hat trick for Mitchell Speechley-Price. Tadley defeated Andover New Street by the odd goal in five at A rip-roaring tie at Cockrams saw the Badgers emerge as victors after extra time. The Rockies went ahead on 22 through Jason Beal. The equaliser came around 50 minutes and soon after it was 3-1 to the visitors. Looking like game over Shaftesbury made some personnel changes and goals from Beckley and Benjamin meant the tie would go to extra time. Three goals in the half hour, and Shaftesbury came close to earning a replay at the death. Barlows Park, US Portsmouth scored in extra time to defeat Verwood and finally Fawley probably pulled off the shock result of the Round with victory at Laverstock and Ford. Romsey travelled to former Wessex League side AFC Aldermaston and returned home with a three two victory - two goals for Pearce Farren and Lymington won two one at Guildford City. Newport both won and scored for the first time in five matches in defeating another ex-wessex League side, Fleet Spurs, five two at St Georges Park with a hat trick for Emerson Tattersall and two for Charlie Urry while Bagshot, who ground share at Fleet Spurs, went down by the odd goal in seven at Hythe and Dibden. A Luke Kendall penalty, the only goal of the game, gave Petersfield victory over Western League Corsham Town, amazingly this was Petersfield s first clean sheet for 71 matches. In the New Forest, Ringwood defeated Eversley & California by the same score with the goal coming, almost inevitably, from River Smith. The two defeats came at East Cowes where the Vics went down three one to Calne Town, and at Warminster another ex- Wessex League Club - where Follands also lost by three goals to one. Back to the FA Cup next week and all good wishes to AFC Portchester for their long trip to Truro. Sunday, 10 September /18 Edition #13 Page 14 of 14
