Charlie Cooper [2] River Smith Sheldon Green Matt Steer John Gorman writes WIMBORNE 1 ANDOVER TOWN 2 Upsets are not infrequent in FA Cup Competitions but normally, if the lower ranked side does not win on their own ground, then they do not win at all. But Andover bucked the trend at the Cuthbury when, despite going a goal down, they came back with a superb second half performance to win by two goals to one and earn a home tie with Bristol based Cadbury Heath in the next round. The visitors were forced to make two changes from Saturday s three all draw with Aaron Nesbeth replacing the suspended Connor Cocklin in midfield and Jason Silver coming in for the not fully fit Zach Glasspool up front. On a pleasant evening Andover kicked off up the slope with Silver s pace winning an early corner before Wimborne created the first chance of the evening but Luke Holmes was too high. Silver and Rusher were causing the home defence some problems but it was Wimborne who looked the more dangerous with Stefan Penny finding a lot of space on the left flank and after he had fired straight at keeper Lloyd Thomas the visitors escaped when a Thomas clearance struck the oncoming Dan Cann and bounced to safety. This was a good spell for the Southern League side and they gained their reward after twenty minutes with the initial move coming from the right with Toby Holmes s low diagonal cross splitting the defence to leave CANN a simple finish at the far post. Toby Holmes a hat trick on Saturday was then thwarted once by Thomas before rounding the keeper and inexplicably putting the ball over the bar. The Magpies did get the ball in the net again but the flag had already signalled offside and though Silver tested home keeper Benfield the visitors were probably relieved to hear the halftime whistle. Anyone who dallied over their half time tea and missed the start of the second half also missed the equaliser Five of the last six seasons Wimborne have tasted defeat at the hands of one of our teams- 2012/13 Fareham won there 1-0, next season Hamworthy United won at Cuthbury 3-1, and in 2015/16 Blackfield came home with a 6-1 win. Last season Alresford drew at Cuthbury- before a replay win. as Andover immediately took the game to their opponents. A long run and cross from Mike Gosney found Silver in the box, the challenge was rash and GOSNEY coolly stroked home the resulting penalty. Within ten minutes the visitors turned the game on its head as the home defence made a total hash of a long clearance and SILVER lobbed the ball over the advancing Benfield. Wimborne now abandoned trying to free the long striding Holmes, who had been a constant source of danger in the first tie, in favour of pumping the ball into the area at every opportunity and although this caused one or two goalmouth chances it is difficult to recall a clear-cut chance being created. Joe Wright was booked for a challenge, with the attitude of one or two of the home players bringing little credit to them or their Club, but with the two Liams, Hibberd and Gilbert, largely dominating midfield and the back three holding firm Thomas was rarely seriously troubled apart from one brave save at the near post. The home side threw on Sunday, 27 August /18 Edition #11 Page 5 of 15

6 all three substitutes but twice wasted free kicks from dangerous positions as their desperation grew but all to no avail. Four minutes added time made no difference and it was the blue shirted visitors who celebrated at the final whistle. This was a first class performance by Andover and credit to the management team and players for changing the system for the evening and making it work - with effort from all and no little skill. The change largely nullified the dangerous Holmes and Wimborne seemed to have very little in the way of alternative options. For Andover, the Magpies nest had a Silver lining by the end of the evening. WHISTLE STOP First in an occasional series. What would you do if you were the Referee in a number of scenarios. Answers in the next Edition. 1) Your cup game has gone to penalties at the end of the allocated time. During the away team's 3rd penalty the kicker makes unsavoury gestures at the goalkeeper after you have signalled for the kick to be taken in an attempt to cause him a distraction. What do you do: a. Nothing just let the kick be taken as normal b. Stop the penalty, caution the player and retake the kick c. Allow the penalty to be taken and then caution the player d. Caution the player and record the penalty as a miss 2) A right winger for the home side has broken away and is slightly ahead of the slower defending left back. As he enters the penalty area on the right-hand side and prepares to cross, the defender puts in one last genuine attempt to tackle for the ball but misses and the attacker goes to ground, with the clear promising attack being stopped. Taking all the factors into account, how do you deal with this situation? a. Award a penalty and caution the defender for unsporting behaviour b. Award a penalty and dismiss the defender for serious foul play c. Award a penalty only d. Play on as the challenge was an attempt for the ball 3) You award a throw in to the defending side, which the thrower takes quickly back towards the goalkeeper. The keeper is in his own penalty area and chips it up into the air in front of him. As he does so, he is aware of an attacker bearing down on him. As the attacker reaches the keeper, the keeper grabs the ball to prevent the attacker playing it. What do you do now? a. Allow the game to continue, as the goalkeeper touched it with his foot first. b. Stop the game and have the throw in retaken again. c. Stop the game and award an indirect free kick to the defending team, at the point where the attacker enters the penalty area. d. Stop the game and award an indirect free kick to the attacking team. 7 OLD BOYS NETWORK First in an occasional series with Mike Robins #1 Swanage Town & Herston - WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The residents of Days Park have had two spells in our League. The first time saw them coming in from the Western League and were runners up in that debut season- 1990/91. They left at the end of 1996 after a dire season conceding some 138 goals and collecting just 22 points. They rejoined in 2000/01 but only lasted two seasons. Currently they are in the Dorset Premier League and got this season off to a flying start with a 10-1 home win over new boys Milborne Port, further success followed with wins over derby hosts Wareham Rangers and then at home versus Hamworthy United Reserves. The first setback this season came last Wednesday night. Going down to two goals inside the first five minutes was always going to mean a struggleespecially against Weymouth outfit Balti Sports. Two red cards didn t really aid their cause, but the crowd witnessed the Swans going down by the odd goal in eleven in what was a thrilling contest. They applied for promotion during last season, but several Ground Grading matters prevented that happening, and the push petered out, finishing sixth when in contention for a top three slot at the turn of the year. In the FA Cup, the last time they entered was during their initial Wessex League stay- eventually going out in a 2 nd Replay in the Preliminary Round at Brockenhurst. First game at Days Park ending goalless, the replay one apiece with the second replay also out in the Forest. They ve been involved in the FA Vase though- in additon to this term, the last three seasons. United Services Portsmouth (2014/15) winning on penalties in the Purbecks and last season Hurn Bridge was the venue for their last outing, Christchurch running out as 2-1 victors that day. Joe Clark netting for the Swans, Luke Stone bagged a brace for the hosts. This season, Combined Counties team Ash United are the visitors in the 1 st Qualifying Round in early September. 9 Mike Robins writes BASHLEY 1 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS 1 Two teams struggling for points and only scoring four between them going into the game made this game look to a close one on paper. The visitors were clearly missing a few from their squad whilst Bashley had strengthened after their defeat at the hands of Baffins. There were few chances at either end although both enjoyed a fair amount of possession moves broke down all too easily. The first chance came on 12 minutes when McGrath fired goal wards from near the PA part of the stand, only to see his effort ricochet to safety off the foot of the far upright. New signing Ben Bolton came close ten minutes later but Watch was alert and denied the striker. The ball broke quickly and at the other end Edgar was equal to Jones effort coming into the area. The hosts were in the ascendancy and on 37 a deep free kick was cleared off the line, and crosses from Aimson and Thompson on the left and right flanks respectively were comfortably dealt with, so goalless at the interval. Harlequins went ahead on 56 when Elliott CROSS showed some good skill by beating four players on his run from just inside the Bashley half and with the luck of the bounce rounding off with an audacious chip over the last man and then cracked the ball home with the stranded Edgar unable to make the save. This seemed to energise both teams, but it was the hosts who again pressed forwards. A tame effort on 71 saw Watch misjudge the flight of the ball and was grateful to make a last-ditch dive to palm the ball away to safety. Bashley came close again on 82 when Kabba Jack raced through the middle and rode a couple of challenges only to see his 18-yard effort blaze well over the bar. Moments later a fierce McGrath shot was blocked by Hassell With a couple of minutes left of normal play on the clock, a Jake Rawkins free kick was well defended by the New Forest side. Going into added on time, Lewis AIMSON found himself in space on the left side of the penalty area and with the ball spilling to his feet when Ross was up ended, was able to grab an equaliser that was probably just about deserved and with only a matter of moments played after the strike, the game ended 1-1. 10 Joe Brown writes HAMWORTHY UNITED 2 FAREHAM TOWN 0 The Creeksiders gave a hard fought and battling away performance today at hands Dorset side Hamworthy United. Town struggled to get to grips with Hamworthy's 3G pitch which resulted in slowing down Town's fast fluent play. On 8 minutes Town almost had the perfect start Simon Woods successfully rounding the Hamworthy Keeper only for his shot to be cleared of the line by defender Nathan Walker. Then on 12 minutes Luke James attempted a shot from a free kick only for it to be blocked by a resolute Hamworthy wall. Then straight after Hamworthy tried their luck to score when Smith once again volleyed over the bar from 25 yards out from goal. 14 Minutes Hamworthy win free kick and Holmes brilliantly blocked a shot from just outside the box and almost immediately Keeper David Hook made a fantastic save to deny Jamie Gleeson. This save caused an injury to the veteran keeper and 17 year old keeper Adam Puckett made his Town bow coming on to the replace the injured Hook. His first action 6 minutes later saw Smith shoot straight into the hands of Puckett. On the half hour from a Hamworthy corner, Puckett was put under immense pressure and a goalmouth scramble ensued and with both sets of players scrapping for the ball, Puckett punched it away and in any case Martin had been fouled. Four minutes before half time Fareham had an opportunity to go ahead when midfielder James Carrier rifled a shot just outside Hamworthy's penalty area only for their keeper Andy Knights producing a diving save for a corner kick to Town. Half Time Hamworthy 0 Fareham 0 Fareham had a chance in the opening 30 seconds of the 2nd half to open the scoring when Town winger Miles Gibson shot low only to flash wide of Knights goal. On 56 minutes the hosts thought they went in front but Preston's effort was ruled out for off side with his header bouncing up and down Puckett's goal. The keeper making a superb reflex stop to initially push it onto the bar. Not for the last time, the hosts were fortunate to keep 11 men on the pitch. Billy Walker aiming a wild kick off the ball at Simon Woods, whilst not seen by the match officials, was certainly seen by the referee s observer in the stand who commented on it ruining what had up to that point been a good performance by the referee. On the hour mark it was Hamworthy who opened the scoring Town giving the ball away too easily in midfield and failing to pick up the running Hamworthy players and whilst Puckett saved the initial effort, the ball fell to Hamworthy Right Back Dan O' Sullivan to tap in at the far post. Six minutes later Hamworthy should have been reduced to ten men when midfielder Gleeson pulled back Holmes only for the ref to give him a talking too rather than the 2nd yellow his foul clearly merited. Three minutes 1-0 nearly became 2-0 when Fareham were caught sleeping at the back when Forward Mark Ford was through on goal and his effort hit the post which came to Town's rescue. On 72 minutes Holmes whipped in a corner kick Laycock successfully win an aerial battle for his effort to sail over the bar. On 83 minutes Hamworthy doubled their advantage to make it 2-0 when Fareham were caught on the counter attack and Hamworthy defender O'Sullivan hit the ball beyond Puckett's reach. Laycock was then next to benefit from the officials leniency as he too should have been shown a 2nd yellow card for grabbing hold of his attacker who had beaten him. Deep into injury time Town had a chance to grab a consolation when Simon Woods shot, which Knights saved well and was cleared away by the Hamworthy defence before the Town forwards to capitalise on the rebound. 14 The league took a back step in midweek with the First Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup taking centre stage with game one on Monday at Test Park but there was no change of fortune for Team Solent. The students, still without a point in the League, went down five nil to a Bournemouth side who more than doubled their season s goal tally on the night with Sami Makhloufi and Kev Foreman both scoring twice. A host of Senior Cup matches on Tuesday but mention first of the FA Cup and the Premier Division. In the former, congratulations to Andover Town and Horndean for their replay victories thereby ensuring four Sydenhams Wessex League Clubs in the next round. Goals from Mark Smith, Harry Jordan and Liam Kyle gave Horndean a three-nil win over Hellenic League Binfield and a home tie with Bodmin Town next Saturday. Andover meanwhile travelled to Southern League Wimborne and after going a goal behind in the first half, a penalty from Mike Gosney and a Jason Silver individual effort saw them through. They now entertain Western League Cadbury Heath in the next round. Two matches in the Premier Division with Blackfield & Langley moving in to second place in the table with a three two win over Fareham at Gang Warily with both the visitors goals coming late in the game from the free scoring Simon Woods. In the other match Portland and Shaftesbury shared four goals and the points on the Island. Most of the Senior Cup results went as expected though there was a good win for Tadley by the odd goal in five over Cowes Sports. Stoneham will be disappointed to have gone out at home to a single goal from Fleet Spurs whilst two ties were decided by penalties, Romsey going through after a goalless 90 minutes at Hythe and Dibden and US Portsmouth losing out to Combined Counties Cove after sharing four goals in normal time. Hamble Club and Sholing were perhaps predictably too strong for Andover New Street and Whitchurch respectively while Portchester came from behind to win at Totton & Eling. Petersfield, managerless after only five matches, gave a much-improved performance in going down three two at Newport whilst the individual performance of the night came from Brockenhurst s Jude Nwachukwu with all four goals in their victory over Alton, three of them coming in a five-minute spell either side of half time. Three more Senior Cup games on Wednesday with perhaps a surprise result at Hurn Bridge. Blu Boam gave visitors Baffins Milton Rovers a two-goal lead only for Christchurch to come back with three including a couple from Jack Satterley. East Cowes Vics earned themselves a trip to Winchester in the next round with a three one win over a Fawley side yet to win this season while Follands followed up their Saturday success at Weymouth with a best of five goals defeat of Ringwood Town. So, to a sunny Saturday and Baffins Milton Rovers continue to head the table after a three-goal victory at Bournemouth with Blackfield a point behind in second place. The Waterside Club made it five wins out of five with a three two success at Shaftesbury - Jamie White scoring twice. A hat trick from Dan Mason gave Sholing all three points at Amesbury while Andover made it played four, won four with a four-goal victory at Newport. Reece Rusher scored twice for the visitors though he still has a long way to go to match his illustrious father s scoring feats for the Portway Club but he is heading in the right direction. A good win for Portchester, four two over Portland with Joe Noakes scoring twice, and also for Lymington who had five different names on the score sheet in their five three success at Hamble Club. Horndean warmed up for their Cup clash with Bodmin with a four one victory over Cowes, two for Harry Jackson, after the Islanders had scored first and Hamworthy continued their impressive start to the campaign scoring twice without reply at home to Fareham. Bemerton claimed their first point of the season at Bashley and so nearly had three with a stoppage time goal rescuing the home Club, leaving Team Solent pointless at the bottom of the table after four different Sunday, 27 August /18 Edition #11 Page 14 of 15

15 scorers consigned them to defeat at the hands of Alresford Town. Finally, still a defeat but a better result for Petersfield after recent traumas in going down two one at Brockenhurst. Laverstock head Division One with twelve points out of twelve following their five one defeat of Totton & Eling - five different scorers while a Nic Turpin goal in stoppage time gave Andover New Street an impressive three two success at US Portsmouth and lifted them to the heady heights of second place in the table. Tadley are third after a three-goal win at Downton while a single goal was enough to give AFC Stoneham the points at New Milton. Something of a goalfest at Hythe and Dibden with the home side coming out best by the odd goal in seven against Ringwood two goals for the visitors Matt Steer. Alton and Christchurch played out a goalless draw in front of a three-figure attendance and there were three valuable points for Whitchurch after they came from behind to beat East Cowes Vics at Longmeadow. Verwood continue to struggle after relegation as Romsey scored a goal in each half to take the points at Potterne Park, whilst Fawley, unemployed yesterday, remain point less at the bottom of the table.
