3 Yet another reminder, the following was sent to all Clubs again on the 3rd October. SUBSTITUTION BOARDS- All Clubs were issued, totally free of charge, with new Substitution Boards at the EGM - Boards which overall cost the League a large sum of money - so we feel it is not unreasonable to expect them to be used. We have not been impressed when querying the non-use by answers such as " we prefer the old ones", I've got enough to do without bothering about those" and "what difference does it make". We have also requested that Clubs use their own Boards at away fixtures to avoid the possible "blame game" should one unfortunately be broken. ATTENDANCES- The League has been asking since the start of the season for match day attendances to be submitted at the same time as the score. It is a very simple procedure but sadly a small number of Clubs choose not to follow same. Actions such as the above leave Clubs liable to Fines WHAT S IN A (NICK)NAME Nicknames have been an inherent part of football at all levels for as long as one can remember, predominately for Clubs but occasionally for players, and with regards to Clubs the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) is certainly not an exception to the rule. The nicknames come in many forms, some easy to follow and some rather obscure, but the most common derivation seems to come from the Club colours. For example, AMESBURY are The Blues as are PORTLAND, BOURNEMOUTH have been the Poppies since changing their shirts to Poppy Red in the late 1800 s, DOWNTON are The Robins after their shirts and similarly ALRESFORD are The Magpies and AFC STONEHAM The Purples. Another common source is the name of the Club hence BASHLEY are The Bash, BEMERTON The Quins, HORNDEAN The Deans and HAMWORTHY The Hammers (complete with West Ham style kit!) LAVERSTOCK & FORD cite their nickname as The Stock but seem more generally known as Lavvy while ANDOVER NEW STREET are called The Street and this dates back to the far off formation of the Club, in which the Vicar of the Parish was involved, to keep kids off the Streets. New Street was a road by the Church hence the name of the Club. AFC PORTCHESTER are known as Portchy but also as The Royals. The latter dates back to the early days of the Club and a merger with a local youth side called Castle Royals. The Town, surroundings or even Businesses in the Town also play a part. ALTON are the Brewers after the Brewery which was in the Town for some fifty years until it closed in 2015 and FAWLEY AFC are The Oilers because of the closeness of the Oil Refinery which outdates the Club by two years 1921 to Just a little further down the A326 one finds BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY who are known to some as The Watersiders though this is regarded generally as an invention of the Press/Media. When the Club was founded in the mid thirties they were known as The Tigers but that did not last overlong and in the eyes of many at the present Club no nickname exists. Moving to the west and CHRISTCHURCH who are known as The Church or Priory with the latter appearing in the Club s title at one stage. On the Island all three Clubs have nicknames associated with the Town or events connected with same. COWES SPORTS are The Yachtsmen in view of the Annual Cowes Week Regatta which has been held annually since 1926 and EAST COWES VICTORIA is simply shortened to The Vics, with the Club name coming from the close proximity and relationship with Osbourne House and the grounds of Queen Victoria in days gone by. NEWPORT are The Port which is probably an abbreviation of the name though Newport was a Port in its day and the River Medina is still navigable as far as the Town. ROMSEY and LYMINGTON are simply The Town but there is a little more to WHITCHURCH being known as The Jamboys. This dates back to the fifties and sixties, or possibly earlier, when there was a large Jam Factory in the middle of the Town which provided considerable employment. The name died out in the latter half of the last century but was resurrected a few years ago when then Club Secretary was also interested in the Town s history. 4 FOLLANDS, through their various name changes, have always been known as The Planemakers because of the past history of the adjoining Factory and SHOLING owe their nickname of The Boatmen to their previous name of VT Sports and its association with the famous Vosper Thorneycroft Shipbuilding concern. Christchurch are seemingly not the only Club with ecclesiastical connections as HAMBLE CLUB are known as The Monks because of the near proximity of Netley Abbey which was founded in 1239 for the austere Cistercian Order and de-established some three hundred years later. NEW MILTON S name of The Linnets was originally associated with Lymington and New Milton Football Club though where the name comes from is unknown as is the case with SHAFTESBURY who are known as The Rockies - this may be an association with the town being a Saxon hillfort and possibly known as the Rock within the locality in medieval times. The Rams, as PETERSFIELD are known, is explained in that when the Club were seeking a nickname some years back it was recalled that in olden days the Town had a large connection with the Woollen trade from which one supposes came The Rams rather than the Sheep! TEAM SOLENT are technically The Sparks but probably better known as The Students and TOTTON & ELING became the Millers after changing their Club s name from BAT who were always The Tobacco Men in their day. US PORTSMOUTH owe their nickname of The Navy to their previous Club name of Portsmouth Royal Navy while one imagines VERWOOD S name of The Potters derives from the name of their ground. There appear to be no known nicknames for HYTHE & DIBDEN, RINGWOOD TOWN or BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS, though one suspects the latter are happy to be known simply as Baffins. As far as Ringwood are concerned, the only time they had one of sorts was after the great war when the club was reformed with returning soldiers and (amongst others) they went by the nickname of Old Comrades but it got dropped after a few years presumably when the old soldiers gave up playing, which leaves just ANDOVER TOWN and TADLEY CALLEVA. The old Andover Club were always known as The Lions but this has not been carried forward and they now simply seem to be The Town. TADLEY however is perhaps the most interesting of all as they are known as The Broom Makers. Seemingly there is a small concern in the Town, now run by just one person, that possesses a Royal Warrant for the production and provision of Brooms to the Royal Household., with some of their merchandise also used in the Harry Potter films, whilst the Town Crest and Football Club Badge also features two brooms. That perhaps completes a clean sweep of the League s nicknames but corrections or additions to same will be welcomed by the Newsletter. Our thanks to Gary Day and many Club Secretaries for their help in supplying information. Brockenhurst Manager Pat McManus is shown left, receiving the Kappa/MJM Sports Fair Play Award for October from League President Dennis Challis at the Badgers Tuesday night game against Lymington Town. Elsewhere that evening, a mixed Poole Town eleven made light work of Wessex League Hamworthy United in their Dorset Senior Cup tie in midweek. The Dolphins were two up inside ten minutes through Marvin Brooks and Richard Gillespie. The County Ground visitors extended their lead and at the break it was 1-6. Gillespie had notched a Hat Trick and Brooks a double. Hamworthy had pulled one back through ex Poole player Carl Preston. Further goals from Bedford with a pair, Wright and Balmer wrapped up proceedings for the Dolphins. Hamworthy again had Preston to thank for getting a second goal as time ran down. Poole finished with ten men as, having already used their three subs, had Gillespie came off with around 25 minutes left. Sunday, 03 December /18 Edition #25 Page 4 of 18

Not a great first ten mins from either side, then Jackson headed wide from a corner for the Bash as they got going. White then had a decent half volley from distance pushed round the post by home keeper Webb. From the corner Sam JACKSON had a free header into the net to give the Bash the lead. The home team couldn't put much together at all and they aimed some of their frustration at the ref. There was a bit of niggle all night. Whiteley had several free-kicks for the visitors, mostly overhit, but on the half hour he produced a good one, just over the bar. Falodi then had the home team's first shot, an easy save. Whiteley then put a superb ball through for Ross, whose first touch let him down, allowing Webb to come out and block. On 40 mins an error on the Hamble right saw Jack put through for the Bash, he rounded Webb and was about to shoot when Bull fouled him. Clear penalty and a yellow for Bull as a defender was adjudged to have got back on the line. Lewis ROSS dispatched the penalty for HT 0-2. Sunday, 03 December /18 Edition #25 Page 6 of 18

7 The home team could only improve and they did, a bit, but the visitors defended well and still looked dangerous coming forward. Lynch had a shot blocked for the hosts, Bull's follow-up was over the bar. Wilson also had a shot blocked by Bash keeper Edgar, who then made a good save coming off his line, as a good move again put Wilson clear. On the hour the visitors nearly scored from a couple of shots, the last one from Jack being deflected over the bar. Webb then made a good save from Whiteley's curled free-kick. For Hamble, sub Wagstaffe put a shot over, and Rowe had a shot blocked as Lynch beat Edgar to the ball. Jack should then have made it three as he raced clear down the middle, Webb making a good initial save, and then another one from the follow-up. Sub Troon shot over the bar as Hamble pressed near the end, he then hit the underside of the bar with another shot, set up by a header from Lynch. A couple of shots for the Monks in injury time, then a consolation goal which appeared to be direct from a corner which Edgar flapped at but could only help the ball into the net. Nathan LYNCH was credited with the goal. FT 1-2 Ian Claxton writes BROCKENHURST 3-5 LYMINGTON TOWN This local rival Quarter final saw the Badgers applying the early pressure with Lymington s keeper, Ross Casey being called on early to deny shots from Ollie Dennett and Mark Barker in the first few minutes. But he could do nothing about Will TICKLE s 20 yards screamer that flew into the top corner with just 5 minutes elapsed. However, Lymington drew level again with their first attack on 10 minutes. Nathan Hurst s 18 yard strike bounced off the bar and dropped in front of Ashley JARVIS to poke home form 3 yards. Brockenhurst struck back again just 5 minutes later with Tickle driving in a cross from the right for Ollie DENNETT to turn in as it bounced off Casey s arm. Brockenhurst held the ascendancy throughout the remainder of the half with Casey being tested on numerous occasions, notably with strikes from Noel McCarthy-Gardiner, Dennett and Tickle on more than one occasion a piece. Only Owen Fee looked lively at the other end for the visitors, his best effort sailing over the bar. Ross Bottomley had the only other chance to level the scores before the break but drove his shot wide Half time Badgers lead 2-1. But BOTTOMLEY found the mark from a corner with just 5 minutes on the clock in the second period from a corner and an easy tap in from 2 yards as the hosts defence vanished. The Badgers back line was torn open again just three minutes later as Owen FEE snaked in from the right and scored from 8 yards across goal to give Lymington the briefest of leads. Brockenhurst went almost straight up the other end a won a corner, from which Jude NWACHUKWU head back across and into the goal to level the tie at 3-3. It was here that the wheels started to come off for the home side. Owen FEE had given the Brock back four trouble all night and on 61 minutes Matt Burt s only answer way to haul the diminutive striker down and give away a penalty. Fee buried the ball despite Taylor getting his fingertips on it as it flew in to give Lymington back the lead they would not again squander. Ashley Jarvis went close again off a Fee cross and Barker fired wide in response for the Badgers. McCarthy Gardiner should have scored a sitter from 5 yards in the next 10 minutes. But that was about it for the home side and when Tommy Barnes executed the latest in a series of full on tackles on 81 minutes, he earned a second caution and was sent off. Brockenhurst were reduced to just 9 men a few minutes later when Matt Burt again hauled over a Lymington striker in on goal, this time it was Jake Long, and earned a straight red to add to his earlier caution and handed Owen FEE a chance of a hat-trick with his second penalty of the night. He made no mistakes again sending Taylor the wrong way. Lymington were in full command now both on the scoreboard and on the pitch and saw the game out with ease. Final Score sees Lymington progress 5-3 to host Verwood Town in the semi final. Sunday, 03 December /18 Edition #25 Page 7 of 18

Starting briskly Tadley Calleva went ahead inside two minutes when Paul COVENTRY drove a low strike into the far corner at the Car Park end of the ground, that seemed to just have enough pace to take it beyond Williams in the goal. Although the hosts came close to an equaliser the visitors threw too many bodies behind the ball and the chance came to nothing, and Cotillard was also unlucky on ten minutes when his fierce shot was blocked. However, within a minute Brett DENHAM had doubled the lead for Tadley. Latching on to a finely delivered pass, he was able to steady himself before firing into the same corner as his striking colleague had. Cotillard again posed the main threat but couldn t get a shot away as the quarter hour mark passed, and when he combined with Will Harris it was the visiting defence who again came out on top to deny any openings. Tadley had a couple of chances late on in the half to extend their lead. A silly foul conceded by Welch saw a Kinge header from the subsequent corner fly over the bar, and a determined charge from Denham could only force a corner as the half ended. HT 0-2. Stoneham certainly started the better of the two in the second period. Hogan showed more purpose and was unlucky to only hit the side netting a couple of minutes in. Just shy of the hour mark the upright saved Stoneham and in the following seconds Tadley s Charlick could only help the ball into the Purples keepers thankful hands. The game began to turn in Tadley s favour again as we passed the hour mark. Coventry and Charlick were working well and created an opening for Denham racing onto a loose ball, but failing to make the most of the opportunity. It had turned into a battle of attrition really as we entered the final quarter of an hour- and although there were a couple of chances at either end, the game petered out with a 2-0 away win. Gary Day writes BRADFORD TOWN 4-0 TEAM SOLENT Team Solent travelled to the picturesque Wiltshire town of Bradford-on-Avon short of five players for this FA Vase tie, including one who felt unwell en route. Nevertheless, Solent were able to put out a decent looking line-up on the day. Jim Orvis was making his 150th appearance for Team Solent. Sunday, 03 December /18 Edition #25 Page 14 of 18

15 Things didn t start well for the Sparks when a slick chipped pass over their defence saw keeper Jimmy Taylor bravely down to save at Mark Wall s feet but, rather inexplicably, the referee decided it was a challenge to warrant a penalty! Ashley MONKS duly converted the spot-kick to give Town a second minute lead. Solent got into a fluent rhythm, one delightful move that switched from right to left saw Stahler cross and Obeng s header go across goal a situation that could sum up the game from the entire Solent viewpoint, although still very early in this tie. Stahler then attempted a chip which just cleared the home side s bar. Solent continued to make the running, a Wilson shot deflected wide and when Ethan Taylor did well on the left, his cross came in to Obeng who would have been disappointed to direct a header wide. Little was seen of Bradford in the Solent box but they added a second goal when Rendall laid it to Matt MORRIS who had space on the left to tuck it low past the advancing keeper. Solent looked to redeem the situation but in an incredible moment in first half stoppage time there was a mad scramble from practically a yard out but, despite three efforts to force the ball home, somehow the determined home side scrambled them all off the line and the opportunity was gone. HT: 2-0. Solent created further chances early in the second half, Mitford s effort being well pushed away by Phillips in the home side s goal whilst both Kasimu and Stahler were off target. Stahler put Obeng clear of the defence to face the whites of the keeper s eyes but Phillips blocked the Solent striker s shot. Up the other end, Rendall challenged keeper Taylor to head in, the referee deciding that it was an unfair one. An Orvis cross appeared to strike the hand of a home player but play continued and Kasimu s effort was saved by Phillips. It just wasn t going in, but Bradford, with a free-kick in an advanced position, put only three players in the box to indicate, even at 2-0 and fairly late in the game, how much Solent had been a threat. When a Solent defender was caught in possession Sam JORDAN took the ball forward and netted Bradford s third goal with a firm shot high into the net via the diving keeper s hands 3-0 and 83 played and Solent were effectively out. That was followed by a well-taken free-kick that curled in by Bradford sub Pete SHEPPARD to administer a further 90th minute knock-out blow. FT: 4-0. It wasn t a 4-0 game as such, but quite simply, Bradford took their opportunities and Solent didn t. There were similarities to the last round when Solent beat Tavistock but this time, it was Solent who exited from the competition. Jamie Spoor writes SHOLING 0-1 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY Former Sholing player Liam Robinson came back and sunk the in-form Boatmen and sent divisional rivals Blackfield & Langley into the last 32 of the FA Vase. Robinson s sublime half-volley on the stroke of half time proved decisive as Barry Mason hit the post in the second half on a frustrating afternoon for the 2014 winners, to end Sholing s 16-match unbeaten run that stretched back to September. There were four changes to Dave Diaper s line up from the draw at Shaftesbury as Owens Royl and Roundell dropped to the bench, along with Kevin Brewster. Lee Wort was injured, so in came Jack Smith, Pete Castle, Jamie Bulpitt and Barry Mason in a rejigged formation. Byron s cross-shot drifted narrowly over the bar from an angle early on, Marvin McLean s shot from distance was deflected behind for a corner, and - at the other end - Robinson stung the palms of Ryan Gosney with a 25-yarder. TJ Cuthbertson recovered well and cleared Connor Doe s header off the line, before Joe Byrne did the same at the other end to keep out Byron Mason s effort on goal shortly after the half hour mark. 16 Blackfield &Langley - second in the Wessex Premier and one place above their hosts - took the lead on the stroke of half-time with a superb strike out of nothing from ex Boatman ROBINSON. A defensive mix-up saw Ryan Gosney come out of his area to clear, but the loose ball fell to the B & L forward who pinged home on the half-volley over the back-pedalling keeper. Franklyn Clarke fired into the side netting and Jordan N Galo also went close from distance, before Marvin McLean burst into the area and had his low strike well saved by B&L keeper Brad Snelling. The visitors were then let off the hook when their captain Sam Poole, having already been booked in the first half, escaped the censure of a second yellow after a late challenge on Alex Sawyer. Referee Chris Wicks let the B&L skipper off with only a warning, however and Sholing s frustrations grew. Jamie Bulpitt flashed a shot wide and the Boatmen then came within inches of an equaliser when Barry Mason ran on to a pass and fired goalwards, only for his effort to hit the inside of a post and roll to safety on 78 minutes. Ryan Gosney saved well from Franklyn Clarke when the striker was one-on-one to keep Sholing alive, but despite five added minutes, they were unable to force extratime - one Alex Sawyer half chance aside before being replaced by Kevin Brewster. Dan Miller was voted Sholing s man of the match for a solid performance at centreback by former Southampton & Sunderland player Reuben Agboola, but the defender admitted the team were gutted at their exit from this season s Vase. He said: The boys heads are really down after that, it s such a prestigious tournament, the biggest we have at this level, and you always want to get as far as possible - having won it a few years back we all wanted to do so again so we re gutted and it s a tough one to take but we have to pick ourselves up and go again on Tuesday. It was a very frustrating and disappointing one for us, credit to them as they did what they had to and we struggled to break them down - it was one of those games where nothing went for us. 18 WEEK EIGHTEEN ROUND UP With John Gorman. As ever a variety of Competitions in midweek with two Premier Division matches leading the way and both finishing in away wins for two sides whose results have improved of late. It was a Matthews night at Bournemouth as goals from Robbie and Jordan of that ilk gave Bemerton their fifth win in their last six whilst Bashley made it three in a row with a two one victory at Hamble Club which is never an easy place to get a result. AFC Portchester moved in to the last eight of the Russell Cotes Cup with Andy Todd and Bobby Scott both scoring twice in their five one defeat of Petersfield whilst Lymington reached the last four of the Bournemouth Senior Cup by winning five three at Brockenhurst. Owen Fee scored a hat trick for the victors, including two penalties, and on an unkind night weather wise an attendance of 138 was impressive. The Salisbury Hospitals Cup tie between Amesbury and Andover fell victim to the weather but all four Quarter Finals of the Dorset Senior Cup were completed with three involving Wessex League sides. Alex Godfrey scored twice as Portland defeated Verwood four two and Jack Mitchell also claimed a couple in Shaftesbury s victory over Western League Bridport, a side that has often been a scourge of Wessex League Clubs over recent years. Hamworthy meanwhile welcomed Poole Town s First Team squad to the County Ground and went down by ten goals to two. (Poole also scored ten in a pre-season friendly at Hamworthy). The last of the quarter finals saw Wimborne beat Dorchester by two goals to nil. So to Saturday and a perhaps disappointing day in the Vase as we lost two teams, and some unexpected results in the League as well. In the Vase the clash between and Division One ended in favour of the former as a sixth minute goal from Aurele Beya gave Newport victory over Christchurch. Horndean scored at the same stage at Hamble Club but the home side came back with a goal either side of half time to reach the last 32 in the Competition a very praiseworthy feat in their first year of entry. In the last all Wessex tie a Liam Robinson goal on the stroke of halftime sent Blackfield and Langley through at Sholing s expense in front of an attendance of 169. Our two Clubs on the road in the Competition suffered almost similar fates with Team Solent losing four nil at Western League Bradford Town and Baffins Milton Rovers going down four one at Combined Counties League Horley Town. Hamworthy United made the headlines in the inflicting Andover Town s first In the last all Wessex tie a Liam Robinson goal on the stroke of halftime sent Blackfield and Langley through at Sholing s expense home defeat in the League and only their second overall. This was the visitors fourth win in a row with Nathan Walker claiming both goals, one a late winner. With Andover s three nearest rivals all involved in the Vase their position at the top of the table remains unchanged though Hamworthy s win takes them into third place. Lymington were the other side to benefit, a five nil win at Bashley taking them into fifth place. Owen Fee scored his second hat trick in five days for the winners with Bashley s only (scant) consolation being the attendance of 160 the highest of the day in the League. AFC Portchester went down to a heavy defeat at Shaftesbury as Mali Benjamin scored twice in a five one win for the home side, their first victory in five matches, and another two goal man was Jordan Neal in Fareham s three goal win over Alresford. Bemerton suffered their first defeat in five matches going down three nil at Cowes two goals for John McKie whilst at the bottom of the table both Amesbury and Petersfield added a point to their tally. Amesbury shared four goals with Portland at Bonnymead Park a third successive draw for the visitors and a very late equaliser for the home side and there was a similar scoreline at Love Lane where Bournemouth were the opposition. However, with the midway point of the season virtually upon us Amesbury and Petersfield, along with Newport, are still adrift in the relegation zone. Division One leaders Andover New Street enjoyed a day off but remain in pole position with Tadley now in second place after an impressive two goal victory at AFC Stoneham. Romsey went down two nil at home to a Follands side that defended stubbornly and scored twice in the second half and a very late Lewis Wykes strike gave Laverstock and Ford victory over Whitchurch and took them into the top five where all are covered by just four points. The free scoring Steve Flynn scored twice as New Milton made it sixteen points from the last eighteen with a three one win at Downton and US Portsmouth made it three wins in a row with the only goal of the game at Alton. East Cowes Vics and Fawley shared two goals at Beatrice Avenue but Ringwood and Totton and Eling could not manage one between them at Long Lane. Finally Hythe and Dibden recorded their first win in five with a two goal victory at Verwood. Three teams in the last thirty two of the Vase is a credit to the League and congratulations to all concerned whilst the Town of Andover still holds sway domestically so to speak.
