3 TODAY S fixtures Full programme of fixtures for Wessex League today LEAGUE matters are in full focus this afternoon for the first time in a few weeks. Football takes a break this weekend from the FA competitions, so today we have a full programme of fixtures across the Wessex League, both in the Premier Division and Division 1. So with no FA Cup or FA Vase ties, the league tables will start to take more shape with more matches being played. Fixtures which catch the eye are the East Hampshire derby which sees Alresford Town host Horndean. Leaders Moneyfields host Lymington Town and Winchester City play Newport IOW at home. In Division 1, early leaders United Services Portsmouth host Downton and there is a top of the table clash between Fleet Spurs and Ringwood Town. In the Football League, Portsmouth will be looking to push on back up the League 2 table when they host Wycombe Wanderers at Fratton Park. A round up of the half time scores will be read out on the tannoy system in the Love Lane stadium during the interval. Tuesday night brought us another victory this time over Aldershot Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup. They may have sent their academy side to Love Lane for the game but you can only beat what is put out in front of you and again our professional approach to the game ensured we won through to the next round. This afternoon s game could well prove to be a pivotal one as far as the season is concerned. It sees us take our record of being second in the Premier Division table up against Blackfield s record of remaining unbeaten in the league so far this campaign. It will be a good test again of our credentials, showing how far we have come and no doubt how far we still need to go to class ourselves as one of the top sides in this division. Saying all that we should embrace occasions like this as we have nothing to fear going into fixtures like this. It is important to test ourselves in the most demanding of conditions it shows the undoubted ability and talents we have within the club. It also helps to show where we are in terms of our development at this stage of the season and potential areas where more work may be needed. Again though, and I find myself saying this almost every week, anything is possible and the belief currently running through the team is amazing. With the right preparation and focus I am sure we are capable of earning another three points today against one of the best sides in the Premier Division. GRAEME MOIR, VICE CHAIRMAN 5
6 MANAGER S notes Today s game undoubtedly our toughest test in the Premier Division so far I WOULD like to welcome and congratulate John and his Blackfield charges to Love Lane for this Premier Division encounter. Blackfield are currently unbeaten in the league and are still competing in the FA national cup competitions. Our visitors have a plethora of excellent players who have plied their trade at higher levels and this will certainly be the greatest challenge of our fledgling Premier Division experience. I have known John for a long time and he has always been a coach/ manager that I have looked up to. He has a fantastic reputation after a long career in non-league football and I am hoping he will give me a tip or two in these early years of my own managerial career. We have had an excellent couple of weeks in both league and cup competitions, although our niaive disciplinary record and our unlucky knack of picking up injuries is starting to take their toll. Last season s top scorer Robbie Tambling was on the receiving end of some harsh treatment last weekend and it would seem his services cannot be called upon for at least a few weeks. We are also still missing young Will Essai, Luke Heard and the live wire Jason Silver. Alex Lowley starts the first of his three match ban today also. All games for a newly promoted club are tough, but today will undoubtedly be our toughest so far. We are currently in a period of good confidence and we can only hope this will help us compete this afternoon. Good luck to both clubs today and we hope to see as many supporters as possible here on Tuesday night when we host local rivals Clanfield in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. All the best. However, the following season they won the cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this the club applied to join the Hampshire League and they made their debut in Division 3 West in Although they won the title the following season, the club did not move into Division 2 until They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the club dropped into Division 4, were promoted in after finishing third but dropped back again in Then in the Hampshire League reorganised and Division 4 was swallowed up by Division 3 and as runners-up promotion was secured to Division 2. After three seasons in Division 2, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locks Heath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with 11 top six finishes, including three second places and then won the elusive championship in With the establishment of the Wessex League in , Blackfield and Langley recognised that to compete against the best in local football the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the council provided a playing surface that is the envy of many teams. Chairman at the time, Hans McDonald, his successor Ian Hoare and an enthusiastic committee set about bringing the ground up to standard. The best opportunity came in the championship year but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The club s chance for promotion came two years later. A last match win at West Wight Mayflower meant the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League football. After five years in Wessex Division 1 the club were relegated to the new Division 2 in Over the years Blackfield and Langley has had their fair share of cup success. In the 1980 and 1990s, the club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners four times. The last success in 1998 produced a league and cup double. The club were losing finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup in 1986, the Hampshire Youth League Cup in 1991 and the Hampshire Youth Floodlight Final in The season brought promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League. The season saw them win the Premier Division, reach the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and reach the last 32 of the FA Vase. 20 9
10 RAMS report Aldershot lose out as Rams book place in the next round 10 Petersfield Town 5 Aldershot Town 2 PETERSFIELD saw off the threat of Remy and Zola to cruise through to the third round of the Hampshire Senior Cup last Tuesday night. However, the Rams weren t up against Premier League giants Loic and Gianfranco Johan Remy and Kevin Zola were part of the academy side Aldershot Town sent to Love Lane for this cup tie. Apart from the pace they had up front, the Shots had little to worry Petersfield on the night and the Rams knocked out the Conference side with relative ease. Many in the crowd thought Joe Richardson had fired Petersfield in front after only seven minutes but his shot from almost 30 yards out hit the post. The Rams were in front on 11 minutes when a cross from the left by Danny Thompson was flicked on at the near post and Andy Todd was lurking at the far post and he ran in and headed the ball home. The home side doubled their lead on 19 minutes when a cross from the right went across the face of the goal before being picked up by Thompson and he shot low into the far corner of the net from the left hand corner of the penalty area. Aldershot had to wait until the 26th minute of the game before they could fashion a half chance on goal. Good midfield play saw the ball worked from the left to Remy on the edge of the box but his shot was charged down. They went closer three minutes later with a free kick from 25 yards out on the right hand side, forcing Rams keeper Matt Shortt to punch the ball clear at his near post. Todd then had another chance to extend Petersfield s lead when he flicked on a cross from the left at the near post but the ball was missed by keeper James Skillon and Warren Hunt before it dropped just wide of the far post. Aldershot got themselves back into the game eight minutes after half time when a ball up the right hand side of midfield saw substitute Glory Manitou race clear and he hit a first time shot past Shortt and inside his near post. Four minutes later the Shots could have drawn level when a cross from the right was headed clear to the edge of the area where substitute Shylo Mcnally was waiting for any loose balls but he hit his first time effort well wide of the target. However, the Rams made it 3-1 on the hour mark when a cross from Jake Slater on the right found Todd in the penalty area and Skillon could only help his powerful header into the net. Aldershot made it 3-2 on 63 minutes when a ball straight down the middle of the pitch sent Joshua Francis racing clear and he smashed his first time shot past Shortt. Just as it looked like the visitors may be able to draw level for the first time in the game Petersfield scored two goals in three minutes to put the result beyond doubt. On 72 minutes Hunt had a one-on-one chance blocked by Skillon and after the ball was half cleared, Jack James cross found substitute Ash Howes completely unmarked inside the penalty area and he had time to pick out the top corner of the goal with his shot. Todd finally completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes when Hunt laid the ball off inside for his team mate to go through and put a low shot under Skillon. 19

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to February 1996 and Petersfield s 2-1 win over Eastleigh in the Wessex League. Reporter Peter Koerner explained the reasons why the Rams had ended a run of poor form and he put it down to one thing Petersfield oozed class. If one of the players lost the ball another was on hand to pounce and take up the initiative, said the report. The approach play was a pleasure to watch but the finishing was woeful. Darren Chambers was guilty of a couple of misses, one from around four yards out, as was Matt Short, who hit a shot well wide after being sent clear. Petersfield paid the price for not taking their chances when Eastleigh took the lead three minutes before half time when Dean Byrne shot the ball home from 30 yards out. However, Petersfield were back on level terms nine minutes into the second half when Paul Russell got himself in the way of an attempted clearance and the ball bounced off of him and into the net. The Rams got their winner on 81 minutes when Russell set up the goal. His shot was only parried by Eastleigh keeper Adam Gage and Short followed up to stab the ball into the net. The match action picture that went with the match report in the Post (see above) shows Petersfield s Paul Russell (left) battling for possession with an Eastleigh player. RAMS report Todd comes off the bench to make a difference for Rams Lymington Town 1 Petersfield Town 2 PETERSFIELD moved up to second place in the Sydenhams Premier Division table after securing their sixth win in a row from a tough encounter with Lymington Town last Saturday. The Rams had to dig in and battle their way through what was an even match for the large part but their extra quality up front was the difference in the final assessment of the game. Although the visitors came under periods of pressure throughout the afternoon, defensively they looked relatively comfortable and dealt with the attacks which came their way. However, the home side could and probably should have raced into a 2-0 lead with only six minutes on the clock. The first attack of the afternoon saw Jack Odam put clean through the centre of the Rams defence but he curled his shot over the goal and Tony Lee then picked up the ball on the left hand edge of the penalty area, cut inside his marker and curled his shot on to the crossbar. Midway through the first half Lee should have done better when he had a free header on goal but Matt Shortt got down well to save at the base of the post. The Rams then lost Robbie Tambling due to a horrific looking challenge. The ball was running out of play on the right wing as Tambling and Tom Man tried to chase after it but the Lymington defender appeared to shove Tambling in the back, which sent him flying into the referee s assistant and the pitchside barrier. Tambling eventually hobbled back to the dressing room after a lengthy spell of treatment at the side of the pitch. He was later checked out at hospital and is now likely to be out for two weeks with a shoulder injury. Despite the challenge looking like a clear case of dangerous play the referee took no further action and the game eventually restarted with a throw in. Tambling s replacement, Andy Todd, almost had an instant impact for the Rams. His downward header at the far post was straight at the keeper and his close range shot from a low cross was blocked by the keeper s legs. Petersfield took the lead three minutes into the second half following a period of good build up play in midfield. First Joe Richardson tried to burst through when the ball was played up to the edge of the penalty area but then Todd took on the loose ball, got clear of the defence and after he took the ball around keeper Monty George, the youngster made the slightest of contact with the striker s legs to send him tumbling. Hunt made no mistake with his spot kick when he fired the penalty into the roof of the net. However, the lead lasted only two minutes when the home side forced an equaliser. A long ball through the middle of the Rams defence was not picked up and as the ball bounced inside the penalty area, Lee got a touch to it to bundle the ball over the line. The Rams got what proved to be the winner after 68 minutes. Again good passing through the midfield created the space for Todd to be put clear and he allowed the ball to run down the right hand side of the penalty area before firing a low shot under George and inside the far post from a tight angle
