All will be aware that Sholing have reached the last eight of the FA Vase ties to be played on February 23rd so a look at the other seven Clubs still with their eyes on Wembley, though because of two postponements last Saturday that seven, was until yesterday nine. The first of the two outstanding Fifth Round ties was an all North-East affair between HEBBURN TOWN and WEST AUCKLAND. Hebburn is on the River Tyne between Gateshead and Jarrow and the Town s Football Club are known as The Hornets and this is the furthest they have gone in the Competition in their history. West Auckland lies to the west of Bishops Auckland and is only some thirty miles from Hebburn which leaves one wondering why the tie was not re-arranged for midweek rather than Saturday. West Auckland have perhaps the best Vase pedigree of the Clubs still in contention, having been beaten finalists in 2012 and 2014 with the Trophy going to Dunston and Sholing respectively on those occasions. Both these two Clubs compete in the Northern League and are occupying seventh and eighth places as this is written. A 2-0 away win sees West go through. The other postponed tie involved two Clubs rather further apart in geographical terms as IRLAM entertained CHERTSEY TOWN. Irlam is a suburb of Salford in Greater Manchester and, known as The Mitchells or Stack for reasons that are unclear, currently lie in thirteenth place in the North West Counties and have never reached this stage of the Competition before. Chertsey is in suburban Surrey on the banks of the Thames with their Football Club, known as The Curfews, at present in second place in the Combined Counties League with games in hand on virtually every Club in the League. They were Vase quarter finalists in 1988 and 1992, Another 2-0 away win sees the Curfews face a trip to West Auckland. The other tree quarter final ties were already confirmed Monday with the first being CANTERBURY CITY at home to BIGGLESWADE. Canterbury of course is a Cathedral City in Kent but since losing their Ground some years ago memory suggests it was shared with Speedway they have played outside the City and currently ground share with Isthmian League side Faversham Town some ten miles away, though last Saturday s tie was played at Ashford United with Faversham claiming first use of their own ground on the day. They are currently tenth in the South East Counties League and again are in unknown territory this far in to the Vase. Biggleswade is a Market Town adjacent to the A1 in Bedfordshire and boasts two Football Clubs playing at a good level and sharing the same ground. Biggleswade Town FC are members of the Southern League whilst Biggleswade FC, the Club playing in the Vase at a stage they have not previously reached, are currently in second place in the Spartan South Midlands League. Next two Clubs known to the Sydenhams League through their Vase exploits this season, WILLAND ROVERS and CRAY VALLEY. Willand is a village near Cullompton in Devon and their Football Club is putting a lot of larger towns to shame by sitting on top of the Western League at this point in time. They are known as The Rovers or The Devon All Whites and ended Hamworthy United s Vase hopes earlier in the season and their compact ground will undoubtedly be packed out on the day. There is both a St Marys Cray and a Foots Cray in Kent, both in the Borough of Bromley, but Cray Valley, who include Paper Mills in their full title, play at Eltham on the Thames where they ground share with Greenwich Borough and where they defeated Baffins Milton Rovers in an earlier Round. Like Canterbury they are members of the South East Counties League in fourth place at present and as with most of the Clubs mentioned to date have never before progressed so far in the Competition. The final tie- Sholing were the last team drawn out of the hat when the draw was made and have to travel to NORTHWICH VICTORIA. Northwich is in Cheshire around eighteen miles east of Chester and some two hundred miles from Southampton. Former AFC Bournemouth players Shaun Teale and Jimmy Quinn have both played for and managed them. For many years they were at the top of the non-league football tree and have won the FA Trophy and played at Conference level but have suffered on more than one occasion from severe financial difficulties and now play in the North West Counties where they ground share with Witton Albion and sit in sixth place. Known as The Trickies they have no real Vase experience having seldom played in the Competition. SHOLING of course need no introduction just all good wishes. 5 MIDWEEK MATCH RESULTS Tuesday 5 February Alresford Town 3-1 Brockenhurst 49 Luke Rae 5 Greg King 79 Chris Mason 73 pen Aaron Blaxall 87 Bournemouth 0-0 Fareham Town 36 Portland United 1-2 Shaftesbury 67 Alex Godfrey 33 Ben Wood 4, 44 Ringwood Town 0-3 Downton 30 Tom Moseley 22, 60, 90 pen Salisbury Hospital Cup Semi Final Bemerton Heath Harlequins 3-2 Laverstock & Ford 72 Jamie Smith Russell Jones Jack Slade [2] Adam Bourner MATCH REPORTS FROM MIDWEEK Roger Allen writes BOURNEMOUTH 0-0 FAREHAM TOWN DESPITE the lack of goals this was an entertaining game between two closely matched sides played in driving rain for the most part. The closest either side came to scoring was the first real chance of the game when, in the 7th minute, Lewis Stockford rattled the Bournemouth cross bar with the ball coming back into play. Both sides struggled to make the breakthrough though River Smith had the ball in the net twice in 5 minutes but was flagged offside on both occasions. In fact River was offside so many times that it was surprising he was not carded for persistent infringement. Of the legal chances the best fell to Smith but he drove across goal just missing the far post and then Declan McCarthy in the Fareham goal pushed a shot over from the same player. Dom Falco was also wide when well placed. The final chance of the half fell to Stockford but he shot across the Poppies goal. HT 0-0 The second half continued in much the same vein with Poppies having the bulk of the chances. All the strikers had chances to score when one on one with McCarthy but the keeper, giving a man of the match performance, produced a string of fine saves to keep the score sheet blank. As the match wore on the inevitability of a no score draw became more and more certain. FT 0-0 James Spring writes PORTLAND UNITED 1-2 SHAFTESBURY THEY say league position and form counts for nothing in derbies, and it proved the case once again tonight as struggling Shaftesbury turned over their promotion chasing Dorset rivals on a horrible night on the rock. The fog at kick off was so thick there were doubts the game would even start, and maybe conditions played a part in the opener as Ben WOOD's shot from range found its way onto the corner. The Blues keeper got a hand to it but seemed to see it late. Portland hit the post before levelling up after half an hour. The visiting keeper did brilliantly to save a point blank header on the line, but he couldn't recover to stop Alex GODFREY firing home the rebound. But the visitors didn't fold, and WOOD got his second just before the break, latching onto a through ball and showing composure to roll the ball into the far corner from the corner of the box. HT 1-2 Sunday, 10 February /19 Edition #34 Page 5 of 21

By the second half the fog had lifted and been replaced by driving rain and heavy wind. Shaftesbury struggled to get out of their half but they defended resolutely, and despite seeing plenty of the ball Portland struggled to find an opening- and failed to really trouble the visiting keeper with anything more than some hopeful punts into the box. A disappointing evening for United who miss the chance to go back into second before their trip to champions elect Sholing on Saturday. Shaftesbury move up 3 places to 14th and open a 4 point gap on the bottom 3. FT 1-2 Mike Robins writes RINGWOOD TOWN 0-3 DOWNTON UNDER somewhat difficult conditions, the game was a well contested affair that would have had a different end result had the hosts converted their numerous chances, the Robins keeper Edmonds- was in good form and the defence held firm to keep a clean sheet. Flynn Wearden had a decent half chance inside the fifth minute only to drag his shot wide of the mark, Sam Brown and Ben Harris (twice) threatened the visiting goal in the first quarter of an hour. The best chance coming at that time when Lee Vint made the most of Nathan Stott and Ben Smith fluffing their lines to allow the striker a run to the bye-line, but the cross came to nothing. On 22 minutes, against the run of play Tom MOSELEY sprinted beyond his marker firing low to the right of Cameron Plain to give the Robins the lead. Despite taking the lead it was the hosts who continued to ask questions of the defence Vint again had a good chance to make it all square. HT 0-1 Downton started the second half much as they ended the first, playing some good football on a tricky surface and Plain made a great stop to keep out Matt Steer not long after the re-start. The second goal came on the hour, MOSELEY found himself in space some 30 yards out, was played through by Dan Telfer and made no mistake from around 15 yards out to make it 0-2. Again Ringwood pressed for a goal with Brown and Vint having chances to get something out of the game, whilst at the other end Moseley was denied a hat trick by a good diving save from Plain. However the striker was not to be denied his and the Robins third on the 90 th minutes converting a penalty to take the points back up the A338. FT 0-3 THE DERBY SYDENHAMS STYLE PART THREE Having looked in the last two weeks at matches between Clubs some five miles apart we now move to the East of the County and find that only 2.9 miles separate Portchester and Fareham or AFC PORTCHESTER and FAREHAM TOWN in footballing parlance. Both are long time members of the so a look at League meetings over the last five seasons leaving aside any meetings in the current campaign. We start in Season 2013/14 when Sholing topped the Division with Portchester in 8th place and Fareham eight points adrift though only two places behind them. Both meetings took place very much towards the end of the season with the sides finishing level at one game all at Cams Alders in early March with the crowd just topping the 100 mark and two well-known names in the area, Gary Austin and Jamie Musselwhite, on the scoresheet. Six weeks later and rather more goals at Portchester with the home side coming out on top Sunday, 10 February /19 Edition #34 Page 6 of 21

by the odd goal in five in front of an attendance close to the 250 mark. Josh Maddison, Joe Noakes and Daniel Thompson did the damage for the home side with Ash Tattersall coming off the bench to claim both Fareham goals. On to 2014/15 and a Christmas meeting on the 27th December at Portchester though one imagines the home side gained more enjoyment from the festivities after a five goal victory. Craig Hardy notched a hat trick the only one in the ten games under review -with further goals from Jamie Musselwhite and Joe Bye. The attendance was 171 and there were 139 present for the midweek meeting in March when Portchester completed a double for the season as goals from Luke Sweeney and Nicholas Littleton more than cancelled out Bradey Norton s effort for the Creeksiders. At the season s end the Championship went a few miles up the A3 to Petersfield with Portchester 3rd and Fareham 19th. 2015/16 was Salisbury s lone season in the Sydenhams League as they topped the table with Portchester in sixth place and Fareham twelfth. Again both meetings were in the latter part of the season with 133 spectators enjoying a goalless draw at what is now the Crest Finance Stadium in March before in another midweek encounter Portchester won two one at Fareham with the attendance just over the hundred mark. Geoff Dunn and Jason Parish scored for the winners with Dale Clark getting Fareham s consolation goal. It could perhaps be mentioned that the two Clubs also met in the League Cup with Fareham winning by the odd goal in five at Portchester. 2016/17 was Portland s year and Portchester and Fareham finished eighth and seventeenth respectively but it was Portchester s season as regards the two Clubs in question with victory in both encounters. Very early in the season, on the 30th August to be precise, Steve Ramsey and Andy Todd gave Portchester the points at Fareham and in a high scoring game a couple of months later Portchester came out on top by four goals to two. Four different scorers for the winners Alex Baldacchino, Thomas Cain, Rob Evans and Steve Ramsey with Lee McCombie and Jay Ripiner netting for the visitors. The attendances at the two matches were 132 and 108. And so to last season when Blackfield & Langley took the Title that for so long looked like going to Andover Town and another early season meeting in August with Steve Ramsey and Bobby Scott giving Portchester a two nil victory at Cams Alders, but the last word goes to Fareham as in the return fixture three days prior to Christmas, a lone Scott Hamilton goal gave Fareham the points in front of the largest attendance over the five seasons 278 with the game at Portchester attracting 217, In summary over the five seasons Portchester won seven matches, Fareham one and two were drawn but all were undoubtedly well contested. There were 29 goals scored overall and the average attendance over the ten matches was a creditable 163. Two final points. It was noticeable the number of players who represented both sides in the course of the five seasons not surprising really with the clubs so close and Portsmouth on the doorstep. And apologies to Portchester for the non-use of AFC throughout. Laziness on the writers part regrettably. 8 POSTPONEMENTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA Whilst it is great to get updates about games in good time, putting on social media a match is off, before telling your opponents, match officials and the league is not acceptable- Rule 8.37 should be followed. Persistent offenders may be treated under the fines set down for failing to comply with the procedures laid down under this rule. Social media should be the final place opponents, the match official and the league hear about a postponement, not the first- no matter how likely a Postponement may be. By rule of thumb, wait until your opponents and match official have acknowledged you before putting on your own clubs social media. The first chance however went the way of the hosts when Ash Pope had a half chance that didn t really trouble Poppies keeper Sam Jones- who was also kept alert ten minutes in to get to a Pope cross. Good approach Sunday, 10 February /19 Edition #34 Page 8 of 21

play from River Smith set up Dom Falco, but he could only scuff the shot into ex Poppies custodian Max Frampton s hands in front of the William Pickford Stand. A silly free kick conceded by Chia Khider gave Pope a chance but perhaps a better result for the Blues would have come along had Billy Walker read the ball better. The Christchurch defence though were under the cosh for long spells in the first halfand a Falco cross couldn t be met by Frampton- but River Smith s final touch was scrambled away to safety. It wasn t long though before he made amends though. With 32 minutes on the clock SMITH outpaced his marker running into the penalty area and latched on to a through ball from Falco to send the ball under the advancing Frampton to make it 0-1. Smith was at the heart of several further opportunities as the half drew to a close- just failing to get on the end of a Khider cross, then seeing his hard work come to nothing when Fawzi Saadi could only fire wide when well placed before just firing a Harry Cooper wide of the mark moments before the whistle. HT 0-1 Christchurch introduced Max Wilcock from the bench at the resumption but the half started much as the first finished with Poppies looking for a goal. Smith again unlucky- mistiming his run and causing the offside flag to be raised on more than one occasion. Khider and Smith both had efforts scrambled to safety as we approached the final 15 minutes. The best chance of the half for Christchurch came with just ten minutes remaining, but Wilcock blazed wide of the target when well placed. Poppies meanwhile had brought on Manny OHAMEJE and he added a new dimension to the attack on the right side and added a well earned second for the visitors with 90 minutes on the clock moments after Falco had headed a chance wide. FT 0-2 Roger Allen writes LYMINGTON TOWN 2-2 HAMBLE CLUB THIS was the proverbial game of two halves with the away side making most of the running in the first period and going into half time with a useful lead. To their credit Lymington bounced back in the second half and in the end a draw was a fair result. In the early stages Callum Kitcher, Liam Crook and Nathan Lynch all had chances to give Hamble the lead, testing Nic Jones in the home goal. In the 25th minute substitute Charlie Wagstaffe was just wide but the merited goal was not long delayed with a smart piece of play. Crook fed Lynch who was allowed to turn and supply a low cross to the near post where CROOK had continued his run to turn the ball into the net. New signing Mickey Finch had Lymington's first real chance on the half hour but shot just wide. However three minutes later Hamble were awarded a penalty in controversial circumstances. Lewis Ross was adjudged to have handled the ball which had bounced up awkwardly onto his raised hand. Nathan LYNCH took the kick and sent a powerful low shot to the keeper's left. The half ended when Lymington's other new signing, the hard working Steve Flynn, shot just wide. HT 0-2 All the early running in the second half was made by Lymington. Just before the hour mark Mike Gosney had a shot scrambled away by keeper Rory Anderson at the expense of a corner. Gosney took the kick and Anderson was forced to make a spectacular save from a Flynn header. However the ball was not cleared and it eventually ended in the net. There were so many players in the vicinity of the ball that it was impossible to tell who had scored but the common consensus was it was an OWN GOAL. Anderson came to Hamble's rescue in the next few minutes when he made two smart saves from Finch with his feet and at the other end Jake Newton grazed the Lymington bar with a powerful shot. But the pressure from the home side was building as Lewis Harvey shot just over and the equaliser came with 3 minutes of normal time left. Lymington were awarded a free kick around 30 yards out which was taken by GOSNEY. His low shot went straight through a crowd of players and Lymington were able to rescue something from a game that looked lost at half time. FT 2-2 Sunday, 10 February /19 Edition #34 Page 9 of 21

John Gorman writes ANDOVER TOWN 2-1 FOLLAND SPORTS ON a cold dank afternoon with a wind that blew straight down the pitch, this was a decent ninety minutes and a draw might have been a fairer result on the day with both sides largely lacking any threat in front of goal and largely cancelling each other out. On a playing surface that had not warranted even a cursory inspection the game stopped almost as soon as it started with a delay whilst a visiting player was issued, eventually, with a replacement shirt after a collision in which one assumes some blood was spilt though neither player showed any sign of injury. The visitors started the stronger and were denied a shooting chance when the referee declined to play any advantage and came close to opening the scoring when a cross shot from Breon Graham shaved the far post with the goalkeeper clutching fresh air. Andover s first chance came from a free kick from the left that Nathan Lunness could not control at full stretch before Josh Bertie sent Shaquille Gwengwe clear but the shot was delayed and blocked. The wellbuilt McLean leading the Follands line, threaded a pass through the defence with goalkeeper Keiran McHardy going down at Graham s feet to avert the danger before McLean was crowded out and McHardy redeemed himself, after in effect passing the ball to Graham, by clawing away the winger s shot. No goals at the break and the wind in the home side s favour after the break. HT 0-0 The second half started with an annoying substitution inside thirty seconds obviously pre-planned so why not at half time. Graham had a shot fumbled round the post before Andover commenced a spell of pressure that was eventually rewarded with a goal. Bertie fired wide, Ben Emans was denied by weight of numbers after a long run and a free kick from the edge of the area was wasted before the breakthrough came after seventeen minutes. GWENGWE burst in to the area, stumbled through one challenge and then went down as the keeper plunged at his feet. The referee gave a penalty for which of the challenges was unclear and Gwengwe stroked the kick in to the bottom corner. The lead lasted two minutes before Follands were in turn awarded a penalty after contact between defender and attacker saw the latter end up on the floor. Callum OLIVER converted the penalty with similar aplomb to Gwengwe and the Andover defender was cautioned unlike the previous penalty that saw no yellow Card. Consistency? To their credit neither side seemed happy to settle for a draw and there were further chances at both ends. Oliver was denied by McHardy after his defence waited for an offside flag which, rightly, did not come and visiting keeper Sansom denied Emans by similar means at the other end. Follands saw a header cleared off the line in a goalmouth scramble but with six minutes left a chance was taken. Neat Andover play saw the ball reach GWENGWE in the area and he fired across Sansom and inside the far post. Andover s Waledin Ahmed was rightly booked for a nasty challenge in front of the dugouts naturally the two Benches disagreed over same and there was still time for Bertie to strike the angle of post and bar with a free kick and substitute Taurean Manders to strike the Andover crossbar before the final whistle confirmed that the home side had secured the three points As previously stated, a draw may have been a fairer result but Andover took their chance and have moved off the bottom of the table after a game that had far too many yellow cards. Why cannot referees talk to players on occasions rather than produce yellow cards so readily? Is it not called managing the game? FT 2-1 Sunday, 10 February /19 Edition #34 Page 10 of 21

ATTENDANCE STATISTICS Despite the poor weather, four gates topped a century yesterday, with Bashley top of the heap with over 170 coming through the turnstile. 12 NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH In the Dorset Premier, 7 out of 8 games were played yesterday despite the awful weather on the Friday and overnight. Leaders Hamworthy Recreation lost for only the third time this season at Balti Sports who came from behind to win 2-1 at Cranford Avenue. Westland Sports closed the gap to just two points as they beat visitors Blandford 4-2 whilst also closing the gap, we see Merley Cobham Sports rattling up an 8-2 win over Dorchester Sports, with Matt Groves hitting a hat trick, at the foot Gillingham Town won 5-0 at Sturminster Newton. Meanwhile in Hampshire, just the two games survived- Paulsgrove enjoyed a 3-1 home win over Stockbridge to move 15 points clear of Bush Hill- although they have played SIX games more than their nearest rivals. Sway also took advantage of the lack of activity to jump to fifth with a 3-1 win at Winchester Castle, despite falling behind to a penalty. It was a similar story to the north where only two Wiltshire county league games were completedboth resulting in home wins, Cricklade beat Pewsey s Development team 5-2 and Marlborough won 3-1 against Corsham s Development team to move up to 11 th place. In the Evostik Southern League, Salisbury s game at home against Farnborough fell foul of the weather, but Wimborne shared six goals and the points with visitors Hendon at Cuthbury- Toby Holmes again on target, with a double for the Magpies. Poole Town also collected a shar of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Swindon Supermarine. Gosport Borough won 3-1 at home against Frome Town with Ryan Pennery bagging a brace, but the big winners here were Basingstoke Town who beat basement side Staines Town 10-3, what is even more bizarre here is that the losers were 2-1 up not long before half time. In the Southern section, Blackfield & Langley continued their excellent debut campaign at this level with a 3-0 win over Highworth Town down at Gang Warily. Adam Tomasso, Charlie Gunson and Sami Makhloufi on target. Moneyfields went down to a single goal defeat at Paulton whilst Yate overcame Manor Farm by the odd goal in five.
