Already looking to establish himself in the squad and has made 12 starts, with his debut on March 8, Howard Nhemachena, Jack Barton, Luke Handyside, Lyam Teixceira and Niall Bolger-Wood are all untried at this level having played for the reserves and under-18s sides last term. Last Saturday was another frustrating afternoon and we certainly didn t deserve to lose to a goal in injury time at the end of the match. It was a difficult result to take but as I said last season when we had disappointments, it s how you respond to them that counts in terms of how you are as a team and how the season will go. So far the Premier Division has served up plenty of shock results and surprises. At the moment everyone is beating each other so it is going to come down to who are the most consistant teams in terms of form will be the ones who have the most success. I m sure we are all looking for a positive response from the players this afternoon to get the season back on track with three points and I can see no reason why that can t be achieved. There appears to be some talk of Salisbury City joining the Wessex Premier Division and that a decision on this could be made as early as next week. I have to say that personally I would be against such a move especially now that the season is already nearly a month old. For me it comes down to the arguement that clubs who stretch themselves too far or who face sanctions due to financial issues should be prepared to face the full consequences for their situation. I have no problem with clubs who push the envelope as far as possible to further themselves but when things go wrong they should also be prepared to take the punishments that go with that. 6 MANAGER S notes Missing list is extensive and is taking its toll but we won t grumble too much I WOULD like to welcome and congratulate Kenny and his Bournemouth Poppies club. After their opening day mauling at Winchester, who coincidently are our next opponents, Poppies have recovered well and currently sit seventh in the table. Kenny has a fantastic reputation after a long career as a manager and I am sure he could give me a tip or two in these early years of my managerial career. We have had a a tough baptism at this level. We had elements of luck in our only victory to date and then it seems to have dried up in the past couple of fixtures. Indeed the defeat at home by Follands was then followed by 93rd minute heartbreak in the FA Cup last weekend. We are boosted today by the return of skipper Alex Ward and our other old heads, Phil Archbold and Danny Thompson. Young Ed Dryden has been included in the squad again after an impressive debut last week. Our missing list is extensive with holidays and early season injuries still taking their toll. We won t grumble too much as we can only play the cards we are dealt with. Monday will see us travel to the juggernaut that are the champions elect, Winchester City. Many of their squad were from Alresford, who comprehensively beat us in last season s Wessex League Cup final. We hope that we can go there with a bit of confidence and redeem ourselves. Good luck to both clubs again today and we will see Bournemouth again in a couple of weeks for our Hampshire Senior Cup fixture. All the best. It was decided to call the club Bournemouth Rovers and it is one of the oldest clubs in the country, being founder Members of the Football Association, Hampshire FA and Bournemouth FA. Bournemouth FC was adopted in 1889 having amalgamated with another local side, Bournemouth Arabs. The club was among the founder members of the Hampshire League and up to joining the Wessex League in 1986 had played entirely in the Hampshire League. The earliest record of playing in the FA Cup was a 6-0 defeat at Kennington Oval against Old Westminsters back on November 1, The club played the second game in the inaugural Hampshire League campaign of , going down 1-0 to Ryde Sports on September 12, The club has had three homes during its history the first ground being at a place called East Common near the railway station and Dean Park (current home of Dorset County Cricket) before moving to Victoria Park. The first taste of county success came in winning the West Division in 1905 and then again in Poppies became County Division champions either side of the Great War in 1914 and 1922, picking up the Hampshire League Shield in Wheeler scored 76 goals that season from 47 matches. The furthest progress in the FA Amateur Cup saw Poppies reach the third round in They won the Division 2 championship in The club recovered some of its past glories by winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1950, 1970 and Division 1 status was regained for the season but relegations quickly followed and in they slipped into Division 3, remaining there until being admitted to the newly-formed Wessex League in The Wessex League championship has remained elusive with the club coming close on two occasions - third place in and runners-up in to Fleet Town. The first piece of silverware for a number of years arrived in in the shape of the League Cup, with a 1-0 win over Winchester City. The season saw the team reach the FA Vase quarter finals, going out 2-0 in a home reverse against West Auckland Town. An indifferent and were both seasons that won t last long in the memory bank. However with almost a complete new look squad, this season the Poppies hope to be among the clubs pressing for honours. They are the sole club to have played in the top flight in each Wessex League season. The clubhouse at their home ground was opened in 1985 just in time for entering the Wessex League and the current 205-seater stand provides adequate cover from the elements with several rows of bench seating replacing the old wooden stand that was destroyed by fire during This stretches about a third of the length of the pitch next to the glass-fronted clubhouse. 20 9

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back a quarter of a century to August 1989 and a report on Petersfield United s superb second half comeback which saw them beat Epsom and Ewell 3-2 at Love Lane. The Post reported that manager Richie Reynolds was forced into making a late change to his team selection after John Pain failed a late fitness test. John Sturt took his place in midfield. Petersfield keeper Daryl Phipps made two fine early saves in what was unseasonable windy conditions. Steve Clapp set up Jeff Marshall but he wasted his chance and Paul Spinks had a header cleared off the line. Epsom took the lead on 42 minutes when Andrews headed home at the far post after being left unmarked. The visitors were 2-0 up before half time when Smith slotted his goal home from close range. Striker Paul Spinks made it 2-1 on the hour mark with his third goal in as many games for Petersfield. Seven minutes later and the scores were level when substitute John Oliver grabbed the equaliser after only being on the pitch for a few minutes. Epsom nearly scored twice in the closing stages when Smith s shot was tipped on to the bar by Phipps and Chris Hadingham s shot was cleared off the line by Keiron Hoolihan. Petersfield grabbed the winner in injury time thanks to Ricky Jones left foot shot (pictured above). RAMS report FA Cup ends in heartbreak as visitors snatch late winner Petersfield Town 2 Bristol Manor Farm 3 PETERSFIELD S FA Cup dreams were dashed in the cruellest of fashions when their Western League visitors snatched the winner in injury time last Saturday. Thoughts were already drifting to a long Tuesday night trek to the West Country for a replay as the scores remained level at 2-2 as the clock ticked past 90 minutes. The Rams were well worth the draw in this Extra Preliminary Round tie but Bristol Manor Farm substitute Ryan Radford had other ideas when he struck home his dramatic late winner. Petersfield made the perfect start to a home game for the second Saturday running by taking an early lead. On four minutes, Brad Miles picked up the ball in the centre circle and swept it wide to Jack James on the right wing. He played the ball up to Jason Silver on the edge of the box and then continued his run, chipping the ball over a defender before volleying it past the keeper and into the far corner of the net. The visitors had a couple of half chances which were well off target before good play on the left saw the ball worked inside to Miles who was unmarked 25 yards out but the keeper tipped his rising shot over the crossbar. Rams keeper Matt Shortt had to beat away a vicious shot from Jack Durrant midway through the first half but the visitors got their equaliser after 37 minutes. A quick throw in on the right saw the attackers outnumbering the home defence. The ball was flicked on and Harvey Purnell got to it before the keeper or defenders could to flick the ball home. Petersfield should have retaken the lead a minute later when Warren Hunt was left completely unmarked at a corner but his header was directed straight at the keeper. Bristol Manor Farm took the lead five minutes before half time with a carbon copy of their first goal. A quick throw in on the right was quickly worked inside to Purnell who had a free shot on goal and although Shortt got a hand to his shot he couldn t prevent it from rolling in. Hunt again had a golden chance to score his first goal for Petersfield seven minutes into the second half. This time a free kick was curled into the box from the right and Hunt broke the offside trap but his diving header went straight into the keeper s hands. However, the captain for the day helped to set up Petersfield s equaliser on 71 minutes. The ball was played quickly down the right up to Hunt who was on the edge of the penalty area. His cushioned header went straight into the path of Jason Silver, whose pace took him past the defence and he fired a low shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Three minutes later the visitors could have taken the lead again when Billy Downes sent his cross across the face of goal but Radford was unable to hook the ball into the open goal. However, he made no mistake with his finish two minutes into injury time when he netted the winner. Again the visitors quickly worked the ball forward through midfield and Radford was played in from the left. From inside the penalty area he then curled an unstoppable shot past Shortt and into the corner of the net
