5 RAMS report The result which proves that anything is possible this year Winchester City 2 Petersfield Town 3 THERE have been many memorable moments during Ian Saunders time in charge at Petersfield Town since the summer of However, his side set the bar that much higher with this shock victory at the home of the team many fancy to walk away with the Wessex Premier Division title this season. The single goal win didn t tell the full story of the match as Saunders believes his side could have won by a much bigger margin had they tucked away their chances. It looked like it was going to be a long afternoon though as Winchester hit the Rams with wave after wave of attack from the kick-off. The crosses into the box and attacking moves were relentless and the home side eventually wore down the defence after 11 minutes. Petersfield had already dealt with several crosses into the box but a ball from the left found Mike McEnery unmarked and he turned it in from close range. But as the half wore on and the Rams reorganised themselves after losing Luke Heard to a nasty looking ankle injury, they came more and more into the game. Jason Silver s pace gave the home defence all kinds of headaches all afternoon and on 28 minutes his pace got him clear inside the penalty area, he pulled the ball back to the near post and Jack James slid in but he couldn t get any power into his shot to turn it home. Joe Richardson hit a rising shot over the top and Warren Hunt s free kick from the edge of the box was curling in until a defender s header glanced it wide. Just before half time the home side had a rare chance to score when a free kick from 25 yards out found McEnery unmarked in the penalty area but he hooked his attempt on goal over the target. The Rams made the perfect start to the second period when they equalised on 47 minutes. A free kick from 30 yards out was floated into the box and headed back across goal from the far post. The ball fell to Brad Miles who hooked home his shot from close range. Matt Shortt had to be alert to beat away McEnery s snap shot from 15 yards out and he then blocked a low shot by Warren Bentley with his legs. However, he could not prevent Winchester retaking the lead on 54 minutes when a cross from the right was flicked on by Bentley and it hit Ed Dryden on the shoulder and flew into the net for an own goal. Warren Hunt dinked a shot from inside the box over the crossbar and Dominic Cope somehow failed to convert a cross from one yard out for the home side before Petersfield equalised on 69 minutes. A corner from the right was delivered straight on to the head of Dryden and his glancing header flew past Jason Collins and into the net. Petersfield then had two great chances to score. A cross from the left caught the home defence sleeping and although Andy Todd was first to the ball it hit his standing leg as he tried to slot the ball home at the near post, and Silver worked some space for himself in the box but saw his shot blocked by a defender. The Rams got their winner on 82 minutes when a free kick on the right hand edge of the box was curled into the penalty area and Alex Ward ran in and thumped his header past Collins. Well what a fantastic game and result we had at Winchester City on Monday afternoon. It s fair to say the result made a lot of people sit up and take notice. Not many people had us down for an away win at the Denplan Stadium. I have received many messages and comments from people surprised and pleased in equal measure when they saw we had beaten Winchester. The most common question I ve been asked this week is what is the secret to beating them? I really believe it is simply down to daring to dream. Obviously the players you have in your team and the tactics employed by the manager play a huge part but if you have the belief in what you are trying to achieve, then anything is possible. The Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division is a tough league but a lot of the teams are beating each other at the moment, which is making it an open competition with a large number of teams in with a chance of finishing in top three or four places. All we can do is keep believing and back ourselves both in terms of how good we think we can play and the tactics and systems we use. Anything is possible when you believe, which we have proved so many times in the recent past. Today we welcome Andover to Love Lane again and we must ensure our feet are firmly back on the ground for the different challenge they will pose us. They showed last season how good a side they can be when they beat us 4-0 here. 6 MANAGER S notes We played some of our best and worst football so far in 90 crazy minutes... I D LIKE to welcome Neil and his Andover Town side to Love Lane today for our first ever Wessex Premier Division encounter. It was very satisfying that the best two sides from Division One were promoted last season and that both sides have had satisfactory starts to life in the higher division. I have to say I am still smarting from the 4-0 home drubbing that our visitors handed us last season, but in a perverse way I truly believe that it gave us the kick we needed to ensure we gained our promotion. Indeed the 1-1 draw at the Portway in front of 200 spectators was probably the best game of football seen at that level for many a year and both clubs can be very proud of that. Both clubs have been given great plaudits for their starts to this season but I am sure neither of us will be resting too much on our laurels. Neil has kept the majority of his squad from last year and has made one or two excellent additions, which make Andover an even better side than last season. In Nic Turpin they certainly have a player with goal getting experience. We had an excellent victory away at champions elect Winchester on Monday, where we played some of our worst and best football all within 90 crazy minutes. We have suffered with some early season injuries and non-availability but slowly we are welcoming back players into the squad. We have never beaten Andover and our main aim today is to ensure we compete and try to maintain our early season form. I wish Neil and his charges all the very best for their debut season at this level, but AFTER today. All the best. After approaching Test Valley Borough Council an ambitious plan was developed to take over The Portway stadium in Andover and redevelop it as a site for teaching the academy programme while, in addition, establishing an adult senior football side that would provide a vehicle for the more talented academy players to make the transition from youth to senior football. Much was achieved however, despite support from the Wessex League, the Football Association initially denied the college the opportunity to enter a senior side into the league and, through doing so, access some of the grant support necessary to bring the project to fruition. In May 2013 during a lengthy meeting at Wembley Stadium, staff from the college and officials from the Wessex League had one final opportunity to convince FA staff that Andover Town Football Club should become a reality. Ultimately successful, manager Neil Benson then set about building a team capable of holding its own in Division One, while assistant principal, Stuart Barlow, and curriculum manager, Lawrence Blair, set about trying to get a stadium ready for the new team to play in. Pre-season was upon the club quickly but a mixture of ex-students, current staff and local players managed some early successes and approached the new season with a lot of hope. Ultimately the approval delays meant the new club started Wessex League life at Winklebury in Basingstoke. Early performances were encouraging and the club ultimately rose to the top of the league, helped in part by Petersfield Town s early fixture list being curtailed. Some good performances, which including taking Premier Division Newport IOW to a close League Cup result, showed that the new team was set to do more than just hold its own. The Hampshire Senior Cup second round game at Brockenhurst went to penalties and a world record 29 consecutive successful penalties finished with Claudio Herbert missing with his second kick to see Andover lose A 4-0 win against Team Solent marked the new club s first ever game at The Portway Stadium, in front of a crowd of over 150 people. Having been kept apart from Petersfield Town until early April, a large crowd gathered at Love Lane for what was expected to be the most difficult test of the season so far. In many ways it proved to be a test of discipline which Andover overcame handsomely, winning 4-0 and showing to all how far they had had come since the early days of the season. Promotion to the Wessex Premier Division was assured two weeks later after a home draw against Petersfield Town in front of over 200 supporters but a run of draws by a tiring side saw Petersfield overhaul Andover. In the Andover Open Cup final, Andover lost to Otterborne on penalties but they overcame Bemerton Heath Harlequins to win the Salisbury Hospitals Cup the club s first piece of silverware since its formation. 20 9

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to September 1978 and a match which brought to an end a long winning run for the Rams. A draw against Portsmouth RN and then another against Whitchurch United in Hampshire League Division 3, brought to an end the club s run of 23 wins in a row. However, despite such a long and proud record coming to an end, club officials were actually happy it had done so to ensure everyone at Love Lane kept their feet firmly on the ground. Petersfield manager Billy Wrighting told the Post: Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise that we realise it is possibly a little bit harder than it looks. A lot of people at the beginning of the season were saying we would do this and do that. With the good start that we had, people have taken it for granted that it is a lot easier than it really is. Lowly Whitchurch went close to compounding Petersfield s misery at losing their long winning run by almost beating them at Love Lane. The game finished 1-1 and Murphy had put the visitors 1-0 up after 21 minutes when he pounced on a defensive error to score. United got back on level terms after 70 minutes when Eddie Bentley s swerving cross beat the keeper and went in. Petersfield had plenty of chances to win the game in the closing stages. RAMS report Petersfield come out on top in eight goal league thriller Petersfield Town 5 Bournemouth 3 WARREN Hunt was Petersfield s hat-trick hero as they came through an eight-goal thriller at Love Lane last Saturday. Jason Silver netted the Rams other two goals in this action-packed Wessex Premier Division encounter which was not short of entertainment and goalmouth incident. The first four goals came in the opening quarter of a match played in bright, warm sunshine. The visitors got their noses in front in the first minute when a cross from the left by Connor Doe took a big deflection off of a Petersfield defender and ended up in the net. Bournemouth s celebrations were shortlived though as the Rams drew level after five minutes with an excellent team goal. A good passing move through midfield found Phil Archbold on the right wing and he played the ball up to the edge of the area, where it was knocked into the path of Hunt, who curled his shot past the keeper and into the net from 25 yards out. Petersfield were in front four minutes later after the Rams quickly turned defence into attack. Hunt took the ball forward but was bundled over 30 yards out. However, the ball ran into the path of Silver who hit a low shot past the keeper and into the corner of the net. Petersfield then swept forward again down the right hand side. Jack James played the ball inside to Hunt who picked out Will Essai s run into the box perfectly but Essai scuffed his shot with the goal at his mercy. The Rams got their third goal on 23 minutes when a cross from the left was only partially cleared and James shot at the far post was charged down by the arm of Liam Jacobs. Hunt made no mistake with his powerful spot kick. The visitors made an excellent start to the second half when they made the score 3-2 with 53 minutes on the clock. Sam Pekun cut in from the left and Shortt had to beat away his powerful shot but the rebound fell to Fawzi Saadi who shot low into the bottom corner. They almost equalised moments later when Doe s header from a corner was cleared off the line but play soon switched to the other end of the field and Petersfield restored their two goal advantage. A big punt forward by Shortt went straight through the middle of the Bournemouth defence and Silver raced clear to chip the ball over keeper Kenny Vaughan from ten yards out and into the empty net. Good work on the right by Hunt and James then sent Silver racing clear of the defence on the right hand side of the penalty area but his shot cannoned off the post and went behind the byline. The Rams made it 5-2 on 74 minutes when Archbold battled his way past two challenges before pulling the ball inside to Hunt on the edge of the box. He spun past two defenders before unleashing a powerful shot which Vaughan got a hand to but the ball looped up and spun into the net. Bournemouth got another goal five minutes later when after a scrappy period of play in midfield the ball was hit long, it bounced over a defender and Marc Fairbrother raced on to it and chipped the ball over Shortt and into the net
