Friday 31 August 2018 Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round Christchurch 3-0 Folland Sports 81 Max Wilcock 5 Luke Stone 39, 90 Premier Division Brockenhurst 0-5 Sholing 145 Lee Wort 34 Jake Hoole 41 Dan Mason 44, 81, 84 MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS John Gorman writes TADLEY CALLEVA 1-0 SHOLING This Round Two League Cup fixture marked Sholing s first ever visit to Barlows Park and also Dave Diaper s 1000th game in the managerial seat for The Boatmen, a remarkable feat in this day and age. Tadley paid full credit to the achievement in the Matchday Programme and then set out on the pitch to try and spoil the party so to speak. The game took some time to get going with a rather cagey opening from both sides and play almost wholly confined to midfield with the only early excitement when Owen Royl provided an opening for Lee Wort, but the shot was blocked. Sean O Brien in the home goal had to leave his area to clear an under hit back pass and then had to beat away a fierce shot from Dan Mason after good work from Jake Hoole. Tadley s first opening came when the Sholing central defenders left a through ball to each other allowing Brett Denham to scamper clear with his shot passing just the wrong side of the post, Wort s persistence won a corner and in the goalmouth scramble that followed TJ Cuthbertson completely missed his shot with the goal at his mercy. O Brien again had to deal with a mis-hit back pass and full back Chad Abrams made a saving tackle on Wort before play switched to the other end with Shaun Dallimore sending a header in to the side netting. A goalless first half looked on the cards but five minutes before the break the Sholing defence dallied again, DENHAM went past a couple of challenges, and slid the ball past O Donnell to put the hosts ahead. HT 1-0 Denham was in action again immediately after the re-start sending a looping header from Sam Hamilton s cross on to the roof of the net. The visitors won two corners in quick succession with no end result before Denham came close to goal number two. This time it was a ball over the top that caused the problem with the striker denied by O Donnell s legs. Alex Sawyer was too high with a long range free kick for the visitors who then made three substitutions in as many minutes as time began to slip away. An un-forecast rain shower saw a rapid migration from touchline to stand before both sides could have scored in the space of sixty seconds. A teasing Hamilton cross saw Denham and O Donnell collide in the six yard box with neither making contact with the ball before play swung to the other end and a cast iron chance for Sholing. Marvin McLean, one of the substitutes, worked his way along the bye line, was challenged from behind and the referee pointed to the spot but O Brien plunged to his left to save Dan Mason s kick and then bravely blocked the follow up. Chance gone. Sholing responded with a spell of pressure with O Brien hanging on to a shot he saw very late in a crowded goalmouth, Dan Miller just wide at the far post and two goalmouth scrambles that the home defence somehow survived. Deep in to stoppage time the only bad challenge of the evening saw a straight Red Card for Sholing s Pete Castle before the whistle marked a fine win for the home side. An enjoyable game with both sides trying to play football throughout and well refereed, and if there was a difference it was perhaps that the Tadley defence coped better with Sholing s front men than the visiting defence did with Denham and Hamilton. Tadley in to Round Three in front of another three figure attendance. FT 1-0 Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 3 of 16

Mike Robins writes RINGWOOD TOWN 1-2 BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS The visitors kicked off attacking the Allotments End, and Ringwood hardly had a touch of the ball before Baffins opened the scoring on four minutes, when Callum DART pounced to hit the net from around six yards. The visitors doubled their lead on eight minutes when Blu BOAM had a free header also from around the six yard mark, to a certain extent it was already game over, with Ringwood now having to chase the game. The best chance in the opening spell fell to Matt Steer who intercepted a poor pass and managed to force a corner although nothing came from it. Cameron Scott in the Baffins goal was called into action with 20 minutes gone having to jump high to collect a Dean Reynolds cross with Lee Vint closing in. However, it was Baffins who came closest to scoring again, when, just after the half hour Freeman Williams broke down the flank and crossed in for Taw but a welltimed last ditch challenge by Brandon Lillie steered the ball away. HT 0-2 The opening exchanges saw the hosts in the ascendancy, but they were restricted to a number of long range efforts that didn t trouble the visiting keeper. However, the visitors again squandered a good chance on the hour with the Ringwood defence managing to clear their lines in a crowded area. With time marching on, Ringwood had another decent chance on 76 minutes when substitute Robert Okumu s run was impeded some 20 yards out. Taken by Steer the ball was deflected away for a corner that again couldn t be converted. It was the sub who notched a goal for the hosts with some eight minutes left with OKUMU collecting a fortunate rebound and running the ball in and round the keeper from close range. Baffins had chances to extend their lead, but had four ruled out for offside, so in the end the away win was probably the correct result. FT 1-2 John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 1-3 DOWNTON New Street, rightly lauded for their performance at Southern League Moneyfields in the FA Cup on Saturday, came back to earth with something of a bang at Foxcotte Park on Wednesday as they exited the League Cup at the hands of First Division Downton by three goals to one. And on the night the Wiltshire side fully deserved the result which came courtesy of a three minute spell just before half time when they scored their three goals to which ultimately the home side had little response. Street were first to move forward with Downton keeper Lewis Gunstone-Grey confidently claiming a dangerous looking Shane Locke cross and then making a quick reflex save to deny the same player. This was part of a spell of Home pressure during which the Downton defence did not look too convincing a high up and under by a defender in his own area caused an element of panic -before the visitors fashioned the first chance of the game. A long run down the left by Shaun Prentice with the ball pulled back in to the area created an opportunity for Matt Steer but the shot rebounded to safety of goalkeeper George Baxter s legs. Another cross from Harry Crisp flashed across the six yard box with no red shirt able to make contact. Zac Hine saw a low drive well held by the keeper, a free kick came to nothing after Locke had been pulled back en route to goal a deserved caution for Paul Gulliver and after a nasty looking collision between the home keeper and Declan McGregor, from which both happily recovered. Then came the three minutes that decided the game together with an element of controversy. A long through ball saw McGREGOR break clear from a position that must have been the best part of five yards off side but Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 4 of 16

there was no flag the assistant was sadly some fifteen yards out of position- and the striker coolly slotted the ball past the advancing Baxter. New Street might have had a grievance over that but there could be no complaints over the events of the next two minutes. McGregor, wide on the right, chipped a diagonal ball in to the area and Shaun PRENTICE, on the penalty spot, had time to control the ball turn, and fire past Baxter. Downton then won the ball back immediately from the re-start and a cross from Prentice was only half cleared allowing Jamie CLARK to make it three. There was time for the home side s Luke Neller to hit the crossbar with a thirty yard free kick before it was first half (and game) over. HT 0-3 The second half started with efforts from both sides -Prentice for Downton and Neller for New Street that were too high before New Street did get the ball in the net but it was ultimately ruled offside. Ultimately because of the referee s tendency all evening not too look at his Assistants. Casson Spencer buried a free kick in Gunstone-Grey s midriff and Locke outpaced everybody, including his own side, with the cross sailing harmlessly across the untenanted area. As ever the latter stages of the second half saw liberal use of the substitution boards and the introduction of Jazz Beavis certainly upped the energy levels for the home side. McGregor was denied by a superbly timed challenge by Wade Crisp and as New Street tried to salvage something from the game Beavis had a close range effort saved and a second attempt cleared off the line though it is doubtful that the defender knew very much about it -but he was in the right place! With time running out the home side finally got on the score sheet but it was a case of too little, too late as Macaulay Stubbs s, perfectly delivered tight wing cross was headed powerfully in to the roof of the net by BEAVIS hardly the tallest player in the area! A disappointing evening for New Street, especially in front of such a good attendance, but a highly satisfactory ninety minutes for Downton, though they must be wondering how they collected five yellow cards. And for those interested in such things an absolutely superb Matchday Programme. FT 1-3 Roger Allen writes CHRISTCHURCH 3-0 FOLLAND SPORTS In the end a comfortable win for Christchurch but Follands gave a good account of themselves which belied their lowly position in Division One. The home side fielded an attacking line up with four strikers and they gave an early statement of intent when, in their first attack, Luke Stone crashed the ball into an upright. They took the lead with the next attack as Max WILCOCK cut in from the left but screwed a shot back across Declan McCarthy in the Follands goal. Christchurch continued to dominate but some of the long passing was off target and the away defence mopped up plenty of attacks. Christchurch had to wait until the 37th minute for the next clear chance as Scott Joyce shot struck the outside a post. Pressure was now building on Follands and they conceded again on 39 minutes. Stone forced a corner which was taken by James King. His kick was met by Grant Cormack whose header was glanced in by STONE. Follands finished the half well hitting the top of the cross bar and forcing a couple of corners. HT 2-0 Playing down the slope it was predictable that Christchurch would dominate the second half and Stone was particularly prominent running down both flanks. But when they breached the defence they found McCarthy in good form making particularly good saves from Stone and Marcus Cullen. It looked as though Priory would have to settle for two goals but in the final minute of normal time they added a third. Cullen fed King down the right and his pass infield found STONE in acres of space to smash the ball home from 10 yards. So Christchurch progress but Follands contributed fully to this entertaining game. FT 3-0 Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 5 of 16

Mike Robins writes BROCKENHURST 0-5 SHOLING On a personal note my 99 th visit to the ground, one of my favourite locations in the League. It was a brisk start with both sides trying to get that first opening, and first goal. Both sides had their keepers called unto action in the first quarter of an hour with Leon Carbayo-Borges forcing Nick O Donnell to make a sharp save inside ten minutes and a rasping shot from Hoole flashed over the bar at the Tea Bar end of the ground. With both sides moving the ball around there was little to choose between them. The game changed on 24 minutes when Badgers Greg King was dismissed for a challenge involving Lee Wort close to the clubhouse touchline. I couldn t fully see the challenge from my viewpoint, but it did seem rather high- yet people further away seemed to see everything and felt it was a poor decision. Anyway, with the hosts forced to reshuffle, it didn t take long for the visitors to gain some advantage for the extra man. The Boatmen went ahead on 34 minutes when a Cuthbertson cross was met by WORT with a stooping header from six yards. Sholing increased their lead seven minutes later when a Jake HOOLE snap shot was low and beyond the keepers left. The scoring wasn t complete though. With around a minute left in the first half, an Alex Sawyer corner fell to Byron Mason and the ball was returned to Sawyer. The ball was played in and an unmarked Dan MASON made no mistake from close range. HT 0-3 The Badgers badly needed an early goal to get back into the contest but nothing clear cut came their way. Mo Nyang was a constant threat on the flank for Brockenhurst but there was no end product as Sholing made the extra man count mainly across the middle of the park. With the game drawing to a conclusion the big crowd still had more goals to come. On 81 Dan MASON had time to control a Cuthbertson delivery and slot the ball home between goalkeeper Matt Taylor s legs to make it 0-4. To rub salt into the wound, it was the same man finding the target with five minutes left when he latched on to a cross from sub Brad Targett and made no mistake with a fierce shot. Brockenhurst had a chance in the dying seconds when Jude Nwachukwu threatened to grab a consolation, but it was not to be. FT 0-5 Gary Day writes NEW MILTON TOWN 0-2 TEAM SOLENT This looked to be a tricky draw for Team Solent, who are known to be short of a student player or two at this time of the season, against Division 1 side New Milton Town. The first aspect to note was that both teams were fielding a young side. In fact, despite Solent naming five of their under-18 players in the starting line-up, it was likely that the overall average age of the home side was even younger! New Milton almost took the lead when player/manager Wilson came up for a corner and shot firmly off the Solent post on six minutes. Solent took a 21st minute lead when full-back Hunt made a good run forward and got a cross in, the ball appeared to flick off a defender in the middle and on to the back post to Callum ESFANDIARI who, with great technique, struck a well-executed low volley that found the far corner. It was the Solent player s first goal at senior level and a real beauty. The home side looked to level with a distant Scott shot going wide. Solent skipper Penny, eyeing that home keeper Mayo was off his line, tried an audacious long-range effort but the home custodian saved at a stretch. When Esfandiari had a shot blocked, the ball was knocked out to Hunt whose 25-yard effort was well pushed away by Mayo. Solent, who had played the ball around well, were deserving of their interval lead. HT 0-1 Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 6 of 16

Solent put the pressure on early in the second half with Eaton shooting wide and Ethan Taylor just unable to get into a good position to apply a decent headed touch to a Bennett free-kick. Ive set up Smith for the home side but his shot deflected off a visiting defender and drifted wide of the far post whilst an Ive free-kick from the left went just over the bar. Overall though, the game ebbed and flowed with the Solent back four withstanding any potential threat from the home side. Late on, Eaton s shot from the edge of the box was deflected clear by a home defender. Solent ensured there were no nervy late minutes with an 85th minute second goal. It was scored by that old stager (in terms of the most appearances in the Solent line-up!) Ethan TAYLOR who, from a counter attack, received a pass inside from Esfandiari and produced a lovely finish from 23-yards high into goal, his second of the season. FT 0-2 It was a decent game overall and the right result. Team Solent now face a home tie against fellow Premier Division side Portland United in Round 2. Elsewhere in midweek, Hamworthy United beat Allendale 10-1 in the Bankes Charity Cup Tuesday night, goals coming from Pepechino Smith 2, River Smith 2, Eddie Hodge 2, Ollie Davis 2, Chris Senior 1 and an OG. Alresford Town also took the opportunity of a free week, to have a friendly against Newbury Town at Arlebury Park. Finishing three apiece it was an ideal opportunity to get ninety minutes under the belt for a number of Magpies players returning from injury. In a swift opening, the hosts almost scored with the first attack of the game, when Erickson Mukambi ran on to a ball over the top that Chris Lynch just got to first. At the other end a shot from Sam Joy went over the bar from 18 yards as the end result of a free kick around 35 yards out near the dugouts. In an end to end opening spell, the Linnets again came close but Lynch wasn t troubled as the ball was spooned over the crossbar. However, the opening goal wasn t long in coming. Mukambi twisted and turned and slipped beyond his marker his cross found Ben COOPER unmarked centrally and the Linnets skipper fired the ball home for 1-0. Verwood pressed forwards looking for a reply and pushed forward collecting a string of corners, but nothing came from them. Lynch was again called into action having two chances to clasp the ball lofted into his area and Mukambi and Harry Smith both had decent chances to extend the home sides advantage. Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 9 of 16

On 36 minutes Cooper forced Lynch into making a good stop again at the second time of asking. The ball was quickly released and moved upfield. Owen NICHOLSON found himself in a good position and after Linnets keeper James Mayo had spilled the ball slotted it home for the equaliser, 1-1. The Potters then squandered a good chance as the half closed when Kimber somehow let Mayo grab the ball when it looked like a goal could be the outcome. HT 1-1 The second period was barely three minutes old when the Potters took the lead. KIMBER was quick to react when Mayo again couldn t control the ball to make it 1-2. Around the hour mark Kimber again almost extended the lead for the visitors, but the home defence managed to clear their lines in the nick of time, whilst at the other end Cooper just wanted too much time and before getting his shot away was closed down and the moment was gone. The game continued at much the same pace, but there were no further real clear cut chances at either end. FT 1-2 Gary Day writes TEAM SOLENT 2-3 LONGWELL GREEN SPORTS Team Solent exited at the very first hurdle of the FA Vase with a home defeat against step 6 side Longwell Green Sports. The Sports made a decent start and Bamford didn t quite get in the right position to head a Lecrass cross on target. Eaton shot wide from distance with Solent s first chance whilst, at the other end, Morella was forced to make a good diving parry from a Lecrass shot and Wallace was in the right place to complete the clearance. Obeng showed good control for the Sparks but his shot went wide, whilst Morella was in action again, but this time a straight forward hold to deny a Bamford header. There were four goals scored in the final seventeen minutes of the first half. It was the visitors who went ahead when a Sengor shot was again parried by Morella and this time it came to FORD to pick up the scraps and fire home from close in. Solent swiftly replied when a passing move involving Bennett and Stahler saw the ball played to Obeng who went over in the box. To the writer, he appeared to stumble, but the referee had a different angle and awarded a penalty. Up stepped OBENG to place his shot well into the corner and send keeper Perry the wrong way. Perry made a save to deny an Obeng free-kick but Solent went ahead with a fine individual goal by BENNETT who initially received an Eaton pass on his chest and strode forward past a defender to move into the box before planting a low shot past Perry. Solent got forward again, a good Obeng run, past a defender and his shot hit the top of the bar. Longwell levelled just before half-time when a Carter pass went under a home defender s boot and ran on to YOUNG who finished well with a low shot into the far corner. HT 2-2 The Green hit Solent cold by going ahead a minute into the second half when a low Lecrass cross found YOUNG who applied the finish. This half proved to be a frustrating one for Solent, commencing with Obeng heading a Penny free-kick towards goal but the visitors keeper saved. Changes were made, and the visitors altered their approach and were happy to play a more restrained game and soak up the Solent pressure. They did it well too as Solent struggled to break them down. Solent did have the greater possession, but Green had more experienced players and kept a well-disciplined back line. It was getting late and Lecrass got a good block to a Bennett shot and an effort by sub Esfandiari was parried by Perry. In stoppage time, Perry kept his side in front with an excellent diving push round the post from a 20-yard Esfandiari shot. It was their final opportunity. FT 2-3 It was a disappointing afternoon as Solent failed to get into a consistent rhythm with their overall play and credit to the more seasoned visiting side. This is a far cry from 2016/17, when they made the last sixteen. Ah, such happy memories to retain but that is now part of Team Solent history. Elsewhere on Saturday, we hear that Andover New Street goal keeper George Baxter was taken to Hospital after sustaining a serious head injury during the game at Horndean. On behalf of the League we extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 10 of 16

For the first time since 1989/90 Newport met East Cowes Vics in a League Fixture, Division One to be precise, and as per the previous meeting the match finished all square at one apiece with both goals coming in the space of three minutes midway through the first half in front of an attendance of 242 writes John Gorman. One League match on Tuesday and a host of League Cup matches spread across the first two rounds. In Division One a lone Callum Birch goal gave Alton their first win of the season by defeating Laverstock & Ford but in the League Cup the Division One Clubs largely gave way to their Premier Division opposition. AFC Stoneham were a notable exception as they continued their impressive start to the season with a four three win at Bemerton. Jack Slade scored twice for the home side and there were four different names on the Stoneham scoresheet. Alfie Lis scored twice in Horndean s three one defeat of Amesbury and Team Solent recorded their first win of the season by defeating New Milton two nil at Fawcetts Field. The last of the First Round Ties saw Baffins score twice in the opening ten minutes before going on to beat Ringwood three one. On to Round Two and the clash between Bashley and Brockenhurst attracted a large following as usual and the 200 or so spectators certainly got their moneys worth. The home side claimed a late equaliser for a one all scoreline after ninety minutes before winning three two on penalties. Petersfield also went through on penalties five four after a one all draw with Christchurch and the holders, AFC Portchester, retained their hold on the trophy with a single goal win at Romsey. Lymington won two one at Totton and Eling and on a night when goals were at something of a premium Bournemouth bucked the trend with a six goal win at Verwood with Steve Flynn notching his second hat trick of the season. Finally Sunday, 02 September /19 Edition #11 Page 15 of 16

Dave Diaper reached the astounding milestone of 1000 matches in charge of Sholing but a Brett Denham goal set Tadley up as party poopers and inflicted the Boatmen s first defeat of the season. Three more ties on Wednesday with one going very much with the form book while the other two produced perhaps surprising results. In the First Round tie Fareham travelled to Follands and returned along the M27 with a six one victory to their credit with Junior Kamara scoring a hat trick on what looks to be his first appearance for the Club. The two Second Round ties pitched Premier Division against First Division and in each case the latter came out on top. In front of a very healthy attendance (154) at Charlton Downton scored three goals in as many minutes just before half time with Andover New Street only managing a late consolation goal in reply while Hythe & Dibden kept up their good form, and goalscoring, with a four one home victory over Shaftesbury. Two games in Friday evening to start the weekend with Sholing maintaining their one hundred per cent record in the Premier Division with a comprehensive five nil victory at Brockenhurst with Dan Mason scoring three, his second hat trick of the season. In the opening game in the FA Vase Christchurch beat Follands three nil, Luke Stone scoring twice, to set up a derby with Bournemouth. Although Saturday was FA Vase day- five League games to mention first. In the Premier Division Hamble Club defeated Shaftesbury two one and Horndean scored five without reply against Andover New Street. This game was marred and delayed by a serious injury to New Street goalkeeper George Baxter which necessitated an overnight stay in hospital. The League wishes him a speedy recovery and would like to thank both Clubs and the Match Officials for the manner in which they dealt with the matter. On the field Harry Jackson scored four of the home side goals. In Division One Verwood made it five wins out of six and retained their place at the top of the table with victory by the odd goal in three at New Milton and US Portsmouth and Alton shared four goals and the points at Burnaby Road. Something of a goalfest at the Portway where Andover Town were three down after twelve minutes and four one down at the break before finally losing five four to Petersfield with the visitors hanging on at the end. Callum Coker scored twice for Petersfield. Twenty Vase ties with fifteen Sydenhams Clubs going through to the next round - a very satisfactory outcome. There were six all Wessex ties with if not a surprise result at Bashley, certainly a surprise scoreline with the home side defeating AFC Portchester by six goals to nil helped by a hat trick from Dan Munday. Christchurch had already booked their place on Friday evening and Lymington joined them after a four two win over Portland at Brockenhurst with two goals from the evergreen Mike Gosney. Hamworthy United were too strong for Amesbury, Dan Cann scoring twice in their five nil victory, and an 89th minute goal enabled Alresford to progress at Ringwood s expense. In the last of these ties Bemerton needed extra time before winning two one at Hythe & Dibden. There were eight ties against Western League opposition with four wins, three defeats and one draw. Fawley gained an impressive five four success at Calne with Peter Southwick scoring twice and Totton & Eling produced a similar performance to win at Oldland Abbotonians. Fareham made the long journey to Hallen and returned with a three two victory whilst Bournemouth claimed the highest score of the day with another hat trick for Steve Flynn in their eight goal rout of Bristol Telephones. On the debit side so to speak Cowes were all square with Westbury at three all after ninety minutes but the visitors scored twice in extra time, Corsham scored the only goal of the game to beat Laverstock & Ford and Team Solent went down by the odd goal in five to Longwell Green at Test Park. The draw was at Romsey four all after extra time with Bridport and the two sides must do it all again in midweek. Success too against Clubs from the Hellenic League with four wins from five fixtures. AFC Stoneham continued their fine start to the season with a three one win over Penn & Tylers Green in Buckinghamshire, Alex Welch two, and Tadley defeated Ascot United three one with two goals from Brett Denham. Baffins were all square at two all at the end of normal time at Fairford but added a third in extra time and East Cowes Vics came through after something of a struggle against Pewsey Vale. The Islanders were two nil and three two down before a last minute goal gave them a four three victory with Jimmi Burton scoring three of the four goals. The only loss was at Whitchurch where Almondsbury scored twice without reply. Last, but by no means least, Downton travelled to Combined Counties League territory going down to the only goal of the game at Eversley & California to cap a successful day for the League.
