2 THE FA CUP AND THE SYDENHAMS LEAGUE 2008/09 For those Clubs in the Premiership winning the FA Cup is an achievable option but at Step Five and Six level reaching the First Round Proper is the Holy Grail and as such rarely achievable. As we have reached the stage this season where Television has allowed the FA to proceed with the Competition a look back ten years to see how the League and its Clubs fared in 2008/09 but with one apology. In those now far off days only League and League Cup matches were entered on Full Time so regrettably only limited information is readily available with regard to goal scorers. There was a marked difference in the make-up of the draw ten years ago with the regionalisation nowhere near as strict, meaning that the Extra Preliminary Round included only three all-wessex ties. Given the number of Wessex Clubs involved it would not be unfair to suggest that that number would be trebled under the current system. The three ties mentioned saw BOURNEMOUTH beat FAREHAM by the odd goal in three, with goals from Fawzi Saadi and Chris Toy for the Poppies- Gavin Spurway with the goal for the visitors. NEW MILTON score five without reply against AMESBURY and COWES SPORTS overcome ALTON four three in a thrilling encounter at Westwood Park. There were no fewer than fourteen ties involving foreign opposition with eight victories and six defeats so the victories first. BROCKENHURST defeated Reading Town two one and CHRISTCHURCH were successful against Melksham Town, now in the Southern League, by the same margin. LYMINGTON travelled to the wide open spaces of Milton, just off the A34 opposite Didcot, and also won two one while DOWNTON were another to score twice but kept a clean sheet in doing so against Abingdon Town. RINGWOOD scored the only goal of the game against Hallen, so often a scourge of Wessex Clubs in Cup Competitions, while BRADING TOWN made the long journey to Wantage and returned to the Island with a three one victory to their credit. The final successes came from HAMWORTHY UNITED who made a three hundred mile round trip to St Blazey and progressed in to the next round by scoring twice without reply and POOLE TOWN who defeated Western League Welton Rovers one nil in Somerset. Eight through but six out- starting with HAMBLE ASSC, now Follands. They travelled to Westbury and did the hard part to speak by securing a goalless draw but went out on penalties at home after sharing four goals in normal and extra time. VT, now Sholing, entertained Newport Pagnell from the United Counties League (and of Service Station fame) and lost two nil while ALRESFORD journeyed to the Forest of Dean and lost four one to Harrow Hill. NEWPORT travelled slightly further than Brading, to Carterton in Oxfordshire, and went out by the odd goal in three whilst SHAFTESBURY also exited after a replay. They hosted Falmouth and drew two all at the Coppice before losing four two in the replay, which was hopefully the following Saturday rather than in midweek given the 340 mile round trip. Perhaps in fairness while welcoming the relaxation in regionalisation such trips as Hamworthy and Shaftesbury made are too far at the earliest stage of the Competition. The Preliminary Round saw a rather savage reduction in the number of Wessex League Clubs in the Competition with only four going through and two of those were from all-wessex Ties. COWES SPORTS scored four again with LYMINGTON failing to muster a goal in reply and DOWNTON won two one at NEW MILTON. The two outside successes came at the County Ground where HAMWORTHY UNITED won through against Western League Brislington by the odd goal in five and at POOLE where another Western League side, Willand, were beaten two one. RINGWOOD held Marlow to a creditable two all draw at home with Jason Lovell and Dan Baguley the scorers; but lost the replay four nil and BOURNEMOUTH conceded five at Didcot s impressive Loop Stadium. BRADING were another to concede five at Chesham with Steve Greening the Romans scorer. BROCKENHURST held former Wessex League Club Fleet Town to a one all draw at Calthorpe Park where Gareth Keeping was the Badgers scorer; but lost to the only goal of the game at home in the replay and finally CHRISTCHURCH climbed the long, winding and narrow lane to Shortwood s ground and were defeated by two goals to nil. So four Clubs in the First Qualifying Round and a fifty per cent success rate. DOWNTON lost two nil at Aylesbury Vale (now Aylesbury) and COWES went down three nil at Fleet Town leaving HAMWORTHY UNITED and POOLE to keep the flag flying for the League. They did so in style as well with both defeating Southern League opposition. Hamworthy beat Taunton by two goals to one at the County Ground, with Lee Thomas Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 2 of 26

3 getting both the Hammers goals and just across the road POOLE scored three (Kevin Gill and Charlie Austin with a pair, now, whatever happened to him?) without reply against Merthyr Tydfil The Second Qualifying Round marked the end of the road for the Sydenhams Wessex League and the FA Cup for the season as HAMWORTHY S proud and impressive run ended at the Camrose in Basingstoke with a three one defeat, with Warren Byerley on target, while POOLE lost, perhaps a little disappointedly, three one at home to Western League Frome Town- Lamin Dibba on target for the Dolphins. So HAMWORTHY UNITED and POOLE TOWN the latter were Wessex League champions at the end of the season - take the plaudits for 2008/09. Next time a look to see the destination of same one year later. Quarter Final Baffins Milton Rovers Alton Downton or AFC Stoneham or Hamworthy United United Services Portsmouth Lymington Town Horndean Portland United AFC Portchester United Services will have a long wait to find out their opponents with the Stoneham Hamworthy fixture not scheduled until 4 December, let alone the winners trip to Wiltshire. 4 TRAFFIC NEWS Clubs are reminded again that if you are travelling to Bournemouth or Christchurch and to a lesser extent Hamworthy United please be advised to add extra travelling time to their journey as there are road works at Blackwater Bridge (the Hurn and Christchurch turn off) on the A338 Spur Road into and out of Bournemouth. This is a long term series of roadworks including some lane widening. Principally southbound this is causing extensive tailbacks at peak and off peak times, with roads around the locality also suffering from congestion. AFC PORTCHESTER The club announced the departure of first team manager, Ian Saunders, by mutual consent during the week. Mick Catlin will continue to lead the team with the full support of the committee. On the playing front Lewis Watch has signed on at Fleetlands. BROCKENHURST CENTURION Congratulations are due to Ronan Moore, who has just completed a century of appearances for the Badgers, whilst a new face at the Meadens Skoda Arena from AFC Totton is Christos Papakonstantinou. WHITCHURCH UNITED Phill Berntsen has decided to call it a day with regard to his football career and has returned to Athletics, and competitive road racing. All the best! Ollie Bradley 6 [8-9 on penalties] Gavin Spurway MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS Roger Allen writes BROCKENHURST 2-3 HYTHE & DIBDEN This was the second meeting of the two sides in a local Senior Cup tie this season and, having witnessed a good game earlier in the Bournemouth Cup, it was no hardship to go to Grigg Lane to see the Southampton version. Although the outcome was the same, this was a much closer game and Brock gave respect to their lower League visitors by putting out a near full strength side although Matt Burt at the heart of defence was a big miss. Brock looked as though they meant business but early misses by Cassius Newton and Will Tickle together with a good Ellis Grant save from a Mitchell Speechley-Price shot meant the first quarter hour was goalless. Then with their first chance Hythe took the lead. Cain Prentice's shirt was pulled by Ronan Moore - a soft but obvious penalty when little danger threatened. Sammy WOODWARD stepped up to take the kick which he sent low into the left corner. From then to half time, the home side dominated the game territorially but their finishing was generally wayward and Hythe were able to take a slender lead into the interval. HT 0-1 With the centre of the Hythe defence looking very solid, the Badgers threat came mainly from Tickle on the right and Mo Nyang on the left. And it was from one of these that the Brock equaliser arrived in the 58th minute. TICKLE drifted in from the right and fired a low shot under Grant into the net. Parity lasted less than 60 seconds. Filippos TERZIDIS, Hythe's Greek midfield player, likes playing at Grigg Lane having scored 2 goals in the earlier encounter. Here he picked up the ball just outside the penalty area and crashed in a shot off the underside of the bar. Hythe's other central midfield player, Jo Tessem at 40 something is still a class act. Never resorting to foul play, finding space to be available to receive a pass and knowing where the ball is going before he receives Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 5 of 26

6 it, is a pleasure to watch. I labour this because the defence splitting pass he delivered to set Sammy WOODWARD free to score what was ultimately the winning goal, was worth the entrance money alone. Woodward is a good finisher and his low shot gave Deacon no chance. Prentice had a headed goal ruled out for offside but still Brock plugged away and in the 75th minute they were back in the game as substitute Leon CARBAYO-BORGES nutmegged keeper Grant with a low shot from 10 yards. This set up a grandstand finish with a couple of good shouts for penalties particularly when Tom Switzer's first act after coming on as substitute was to drag down a Brock forward at a corner - difficult to see how both officials missed that one. Ultimately Brock were to pay the price for poor finishing as Hythe continued to add to their good League and Cup record. FT 2-3 John Gorman writes ALTON 2-8 CHRISTCHURCH The Russell Cotes Cup is an often (unfairly) maligned Competition, especially in the eyes of supporters, and not always treated with the respect it deserves by Clubs but when it throws up a game such as the one at Alton on Tuesday night there is very little to complain about. This was a highly entertaining ninety minutes and whilst it was perhaps a little one-sided by the end there was some good football and some cracking goals for the smaller than usual attendance another feature of games in the Competition - to enjoy. The goal rush started as early as the fifth minute when the visitors took the lead. They had already forced two corners when they were awarded a free kick some seven or eight yards outside the D and absolutely central. Most of the Alton side formed the defensive wall but to no avail as James KING sent the free kick high in to the roof of the net with goalkeeper Boughton completely beaten. Three minutes on and the scores were level as Taylor Watts found space on the left and a looping header by Matt BUNYAN from the cross sailed over Ollie King in the Christchurch goal. It took just another four minutes and Alton had gone from a goal down to being in front as a corner from the right in to a crowded six yard box was headed in to his own net by a blue shirted defender. To add injury to insult so to speak the defender then needed treatment before being able to continue. Christchurch had adapted quickly to the pace of the pitch and before the half reached the midway point had levelled the scores with King this time the provider as his diagonal cross from wide on the right was volleyed home by Shaun PRENTICE. There was nearly a third when a Max Wilcock shot from twenty five yards rattled the crossbar whilst Alton in turn looked dangerous with crosses and corners as the visiting defence and goalkeeper seemed not always to be on the same wavelength. There was a long discussion between the referee and two visiting defenders subject unknown - before King twice came close to putting his side in front, firstly just failing to make proper contact with a Loyd Cole cross and then seeing an effort from a narrow angle saved by the goalkeeper s legs. However the lead was not long delayed as Christchurch then scored twice in as many minutes just before the break. PRENTICE claimed the first, a carbon copy of his first goal though the volley was more acrobatic but on both occasions the home defence was rather static - before WILCOCK got in on the act with a twenty five yard effort that went in off the underside of the bar. The half finished with a display of petulance from Alton s Chandler that bought a response from a Christchurch defender and occasioned an extremely lengthy conversation between the referee and his Assistant which culminated with three cautions. An element of a sledgehammer being employed to crack a nut but one of the cautions was certainly warranted. HT 2-4 Two down at the break meant that Alton needed to get back in to the game as soon as possible but it was the visitors who started the stronger with a Wilcock shot, after Alton had given the ball away, fumbled by Boughton in the home goal and cleared at the expense of a corner before ten minutes in to the half it was effectively game over. A badly under hit back pass left Boughton to challenge Jack SATTERLEY outside the area, the forward was always favourite, won the challenge and steered the ball in to the vacant net. Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 6 of 26

7 Alton then did not help themselves with a similar back pass though this time a corner was the outcome but the visiting side were now well on top and in control. Goal number six came at the midway point as the ball was moved down the left flank in a quick passing movement before Billy Walker provided the cross for WILCOCK s low finish. Substitutes came and went on both sides before Christchurch added two more goals in quick succession as the game moved in to the final ten minutes. Wilcock fastened on to a through ball and Boughton did well to parry the shot but could do nothing to prevent PRENTCE slotting the loose ball home to complete his hat trick before the home defence failed to deal with a corner and Brad CHERRETT notched number eight. There was still time for another Wilcock effort to rebound off the crossbar before the final whistle and a place in the next round for the side. Christchurch are rare visitors to the frozen north of the County and it was enjoyable to watch the performance on the pitch and re-establish contact with their ever-friendly Officials and on this evidence a rise up the table must be on the cards. Alton will simply put it down to experience and move on. This was my third visit to Alton this season and twenty one goals have been scored in those three games all very entertaining. FT 2-8 Jamie Spoors writes SHOLING 1-0 AFC TOTTON The Boatmen progressed to the last eight of the Russell Cotes Cup after an uneventful derby, settled by Hoole s close range strike on 72 minutes. It was the club s thirteenth successive win and fifteenth clean sheet of the season. It came in stark contrast to the win in the last round in which they put eleven past QK Southampton, this time they were forced to work until the end to see off the threat of a talented AFC Totton team. AFC Totton started brightly as Sholing got to grips with the ever pristine playing surface and the style of their more illustrious opponents. However it was Kevin Brewster who had the first chance of the match but the midfielder put his shot over Siviter s bar. AFC Totton captain Jack Masterton flashed a shot over the bar for Stags, Toby Adekunle also went close whilst Lee Wort forced a smart stop from Adam Siviter at the other end. Louis Langdown was forced into an early change when Callum Chugg was replaced by Alex Haynes. On the half hour Owen Royl s dipping drive was tipped away by a sprawling Siviter, before both keepers were called into action once more to keep out Dave Allen and Lee Wort at both ends respectively with their efforts to break the deadlock. Former Sholing player Toby Adekunle went close with an acrobatic before the returning Brewster failed to make the most of a free-kick that flashed across the box and beyond a posse of poised Sholing players. HT 0-0 The second half started with AFC Totton s injury list growing when Toby Adekunle was replaced by Craig Feeney. An early free kick by Kevin Brewster evaded all Sholing players and was cleared by the Stags defence. Adam Siviter saved superbly from Jake Hoole before the breakthrough arrived from the same player with 28 minutes left to play. Brad Targett shot was blocked and Jamie Bulpitt saw his effort blocked from the goalmouth scramble but the ball fell to Jake HOOLE, who smashed home the rebound from ten yards. Substitute Feeney fired over the bar, and Wort then had a chance to wrap up the win, only to be denied by Siviter when well placed on 85 minutes. That led to a spell of late Stags pressure, but they were unable to break through a resilient and organised Sholing back line, as Diaper s men held out for another impressive victory. A third of the way through the season, and the side are sitting pretty at the top of the Wessex League with interest remaining in four cup competitions. FT 1-0 Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 7 of 26

8 Mike Robins writes PORTLAND UNITED 3-0 HAMWORTHY UNITED ALTHOUGH some 37 miles separates the clubs, this can be classified as a Derby for the hosts, with Hamworthy being the nearest opposition in the League. Given this tag it certainly had that feel about it, with plenty of feisty moments and a 20 player discussion midway through the first half. Portland set their stall out almost from the start, with Jamie Symes and Darren Watts having chances denied by the Hammers defence, and a short corner from Jamie Beasley picked out Max Buckler who saw his shot tipped away by Nick Hutchings. The opener came on 26 minutes SYMES latching on to a ball over the defence and shrugging off a couple of challenges before lifting the ball over the advancing Hutchings and into the net. With half time approaching a poorly hit back pass from Ryan Watkins was gifted by Hutchings to the advancing BEASLEY who made no mistake in rounding the keeper and stroking it home from a couple of yards. HT 2-0 The second half continued in much the same vein with Portland generally on top, and the third goal generally killed the game off as a contest, when on 53 minutes BEASLEY squeezed the ball home between upright and keeper at the Clubhouse end of the ground. The Hammers were restricted to limited chances, with both Luke Stone and Mickey Finch unable to make a breakthrough, and it wasn t until the 67 th minute when they had their first real shot of the half that drew a save. Although no information has been provided it would seem they drew after 90 minutes and both failed to add to their tally in extra time against Wingate & Finchley. The Hampshire side then won through to face a trip to Ipswich Town on penalties 8-7. In front of a gate of 135, goals came from Simeone Olarerin (45 minutes) and Kevonte Willoughby-Williams (58 minutes) for the hosts responding to a first minute opener from Jack Nicholas and a 49 th minute strike from Luke Rae. Geoff Dunn has left the Arlebury Park base and has joined Romsey Town. ANDOVER NEW STREET The Foxcotte side have added to their playing squad with the signing of Matt Marriner. Totton, a change in BOURNEMOUTH Southern League Premier side Wimborne Town have also added to their playing squad, with the dual signing of Poppies striker Steve Flynn. Six minutes into the game Fareham had the first chance when Settle struck a free kick shot which forced Baxter to tip the ball behind for a corner kick. The Creeksiders took the lead three minutes later when a cross from Woods fed the ball wide to Settle whose cross picked out ROBBINS to tap the ball in the net from close range. Fareham doubled their lead on 12 minutes when WOODS dribbled his way expertly into the box through several challenges to slot the ball into the net. On 17 minutes the visitors had their first chance of the match when Lock struck a low shot which was brilliantly saved by Fareham s new keeper McCarthy with a low diving save at the right side of the goal. On 21 minutes New Street pulled a goal back when Fareham failed to clear their lines and SWEENEY scrambled Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 17 of 26

18 the ball into an empty from close range to make the score 2-1. Then a minute later the visitors had another chance when Lewis unleashed an overhead kick but luckily for the Fareham defence the ball flew way wide of the goal. Fareham nearly made the score 3-1 on 41 minutes when Holmes struck an excellent long range effort which had Baxter beaten smacked the cross bar. HT 2-1 Three minutes after the start of the second half Fareham had chance when a volleyed shot from Robbins flashed wide of the goal. On 54 minutes the Creeksiders had another chance when Settle struck a free kick shot which forced Baxter to tip the ball behind for a corner kick. A minute later New Street had a chance when Sweeney struck a curling effort which McCarthy made an excellent diving save. New Street had another chance on 72 minutes when a cross reached Lewis who blasted the ball over the bar from close range. Almost immediately, Fareham nearly went 3-1 ahead when Holmes delivered an excellent cross which reached Woods his headed effort was saved well by the foot of Baxter. Immediately after that happened Chandler whipped in an excellent cross which picked out Settle and his effort flew just narrowly wide of the right side of the goal. On 75 minutes Woods had a chance for Fareham but flashed his effort wide. Sweeney had a chance for the visitors on 76 minutes but his shot straight into the hands of McCarthy. On 78 minutes Fareham conceded a penalty and up stepped SWEENEY to slot the ball into the left side of the net from 12 yards to send McCarthy the wrong way and to make the score 2-2. Two minutes later Fareham had another chance to retake the lead when Hardy headed wide from a corner kick. Then on 89 minutes the visitors had a chance when Lewis struck a long range curling effort which forced McCarthy into a brilliant diving save to end the match in a draw. 19 Connor Steel writes SHOLING 3-1 BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS ON a weary looking pitch after the recent weather and run of Sholing home games, the game started very quietly with the away side looking dangerous and created some half chances in the first 20 minutes. In the 17th minute Jason Parish connected with a cross from the left to send the ball wide with a hooked attempt as the ball was slightly behind him. Moments later Ryan Gosney had to claw a header as it floated into the top corner from a Baffin Milton Rovers cross after Parish had a 25-yard shot deflected wide. On 18 minutes centre back Connor Saunders scythed down Jake Hoole as the Sholing winger beat him for pace down the right and was the first caution of the day for referee Welsh. Cuthbertson s free kick found Dan Mason but his shot is saved by Cameron Scott. Sholing had chances in the first 20 minutes as well, with Dan Mason having a low shot saved and an angled drive by Jake Hoole flashed across goal. However it was Baffin Milton Rovers who had the first clear cut chance of the match in the 33rd minute when a long ball was hit upfield. With the lowering sun making it difficult, the bounce of the ball was misjudged by the Sholing backline and the ball was played out wide to the left to the winger Rob Taw. His cross was missed by Ryan Gosney and the header from skipper Jason Parish went wide with an open goal gaping. This scare seemed to shock Sholing into life, as they took the lead just a minute later. A cross from the left by Marvin Mclean found Dan Mason in the penalty area, but his shot was blocked at close range by the away defence. However the block was rebounded and fell to Lee WORT to fire home with an accurate half-volley into the corner. Five minutes later Sholing should have doubled their lead through a corner when Dan Miller rose above the defenders however his goal bound header was headed off the line and cleared. On the stroke of half time some fantastic Sholing one touch passing on the left side led to space for Jake Hoole, whose powerful shot was saved at the near post by away goalkeeper Cameron Scott. As the half time whistle blew, Sholing had the lead but arguably Baffins Milton Rovers were still posing issues particularly through Fadel Seibou and Jason Parish. HT 1-0 Ahead of the kick off Sydenhams Wessex League Finance Officer Paul Scoble presented President Bill Boyle with the October club of the month award, their second award in three months for the unbeaten run throughout the month, photo [right] courtesy of Ray Routledge. With the sun setting behind the trees and the floodlights kicking in, the second half kicked off with Sholing quickly regaining their dominance from the closing stages of the first. Although Dan Mason had a shot fly harmlessly high and wide in the 47th minute, he got his reward just four minutes later with an arguably lucky goal to double the Boatmen s lead. Cameron Scott attempted to clear the ball away from an overhit through ball, but only succeeded in hitting it straight into the onrushing Dan MASON. The ball then floated back over the keeper s head and seemed to take an age to bounce into the net to make it 2-0. Some may say it was goal of the season!!! After Dan Mason was denied in the 57th minute by another strong save, the game seemed to settle into a lull as both teams knew the result was going to change. However the game seemed to bounce into life again in the 78th minute when good play from Baffins Milton Rovers set Fadel Seibou away down the left and crossed the ball into Jason Parish, who shot wide from an angle when he should have forced Ryan Gosney into a save. Despite this it was Sholing who got the 3rd goal of the match to really finalise the game and add more gloss to the score line in the 80th minute. An attack down the left found Marvin Mclean, whose pass found Ryan Mackney in space on the edge of the box near the corner flag. His cut back found Dan MASON with his back to goal, but this did not stop him turning and shooting powerfully into the top corner for his 30th goal of the season. 20 A minute later Jake Hoole was denied Sholing s fourth goal when his lob was saved by Cameron Scott. Two minutes later the away side had a consolation goal through Jason PARISH, who collected the ball in an attacking position and carried on running at the Sholing defence. This created space to cut inside on the corner of the penalty area and place an angled shot that beat Ryan Gosney at his near post. It was certainly a well taken goal and you could say it was well deserved for Parish, who paid a key part in every away attack throughout the afternoon. Once the score became 3-1 with minutes left, the game petered out to its conclusion without further incident. However in the 89th minute Owen Royl came off the bench to make his 100th appearance for the Boatmen replacing Ryan Mackney and got a large cheer from the Ultras for this magnificent achievement. Sholing have now won 13 straight wins in the league and have not dropped a single point so far, taking the gap at the top to 10 points with a third of the league complete. FT 3-1 Gary Day writes PORTLAND UNITED 2-1 TEAM SOLENT PORTLAND moved into second place in the Wessex League table having scored a goal at the end of each half to overcome visitors Team Solent at a bright but extremely breezy Weyline Stadium. The winning goal came from a disputed 90th minute penalty. Portland, with the wind at their backs in the first half, had the bulk of the early possession but it was Solent who took the lead with a rather strange effort when home keeper Lillington lost the ball and it came off Solent s Kasimu and fell to Penny who chipped it towards the open goal where Sam KOROMA capped his first Wessex start by finishing it from close range. With Solent lined-up the referee consulted his linesman as it was suspected that the scorer was offside and, with four home players having their say, the goal stood. Portland worked the right-hand side and Watts effort thudded off the visitors crossbar. Kasimu, collecting a Bennett pass, fired over from 20-yards for the visitors whilst Whyton couldn t direct his header towards goal from a Godfrey free-kick for the Blues. Next, Jamie Symes headed onto the top of the Solent net from a Doidge cross. With the first half well into time added it was Portland who levelled when the ball was lobbed forward into the box, McKechnie got his head to it and SYMES managed to squeeze his header just inside the post from close range. HT 1-1 Eaton forced Lillington to a smart diving save early in the second half whilst Koroma lifted a shot over following good build-up play by Armstrong and Kasimu. Symes took a cross down on his chest but stubbed his finish from around 10-yards for the Blues. Solent had a good spell Koroma s shot coming off a defender, Hartley s looping header from a Mitchell corner was going into the far corner but Lillington pushed it behind, whilst sub Byrne s cross from the right was clawed away by Lillington and Penny s follow-up effort was deflected by Whyton past the far post. Another Solent sub, Ethan Taylor took a free-kick from 25-yards out and it went past the wall and off the near post with Lillington watching. Koroma shot just wide and he then exchanged a pass with Kasimu but guided a hesitant shot wide. It was getting late and an excellent Taylor pass put Kasimu behind the Portland defence, he skipped past Lillington and shot towards goal but Sam Buckler did well to clear off the line. The game had been an entertaining one and somehow, even when the watch ticked into the 90th minute, there was a feeling that one of the teams was going to snatch the win - it went to Portland and from a Solent viewpoint, it came in a rather cruel way. The ball was played in and there was a coming together between two opponents and the referee made a big decision and awarded a penalty to the home side. It was a comme ci comme ça type of call they re usually not given but this one was granted. Portland took full advantage as up stepped SYMES to strike the spot-kick firm, low and into the corner via the despairing glove of keeper Londors. FT 2-1 Solent played a full part in this game and they deserved something but, the penalty aside, there was also some indecision having worked a decent shooting opportunity. So, Solent return from Dorset with nothing and sink to the bottom of the table as well. Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 20 of 26

Sway won the midtable battle over Colden Common 4-2, whilst Stockbridge and Liphook shared the points in a game that ended two apiece. There was also a big win for Trowbridge returning home from a 5-1 win at Devizes, and Marlborough also won on the road, 2-0 at Westbury. 25 RANK Wyvern Premier PL W D L F A GD PTS 1 AFC Portchester Hamble Club Winchester City Sholing Moneyfields Wimborne Town AFC Stoneham Poole Town Romsey Town Salisbury Christchurch Laverstock & Ford WEEK FIFTEEN ROUND UP T hankfully the weather had improved from the weekend and the usual midweek miscellany of matches in numerous Competitions went ahead with the exception of the Wiltshire Senior Cup tie between Laverstock & Ford and Malmesbury Victoria which did fall foul of a waterlogged pitch writes John Gorman. Two games in the at Bashley and Portland that both attracted three figure attendances with the latter moving in to third place of the table after beating Hamworthy United three nil with two goals from Jamie Beasley. At Bashley a one all draw kept Hamble Club in fourth place as they continue to enjoy a successful season thus far. Six ties completed in the Russell-Cotes Cup and one not played (where Gosport Borough having withdrawn from the competition enabled AFC Stoneham to advance without a ball being kicked), and one or two perhaps surprise results. Fareham s current run of poor form continued with a two one loss at home to Hampshire Premier League leaders Paulsgrove and AFC Portchester, with Mick Catlin holding the managerial reins after the departure of Ian Saunders, lost two nil at Petersfield, a result that should increase the home side s morale after a recent run of defeats. Lymington continued their current goalscoring spree with seven against Andover New Street two each for Tim Stephenson and Luke Ansell while Christchurch went one better in beating Alton eight two at Anstey. A hat trick for Shaun At the lower end of the table Andover New Street came back from conceding two goals in the first eleven minutes at Fareham to share the points Prentice and two for Max Wilcock and some very well made and taken goals among the eight. Romsey went down one nil at Southern League Fleet Town and leaving the best to last Sholing beat AFC Totton one nil with a Jake Hoole goal in front of an attendance that topped the two hundred mark. In the Southampton Senior Cup a good win for Hythe & Dibden three two at Brockenhurst - while Alresford scored six without reply against Southampton Senior League side, but Wiltshire based, Alderbury. Two games, one in and one in the Russell-Cotes Cup, completed the midweek action on Wednesday, AFC Stoneham maintained their unbeaten record and climbed in to third place in the table with a two one victory over Whitchurch on a very foggy evening in that part of Southampton. The home side led at the break, Whitchurch had their goalkeeper dismissed before equalising in the closing minutes only for Stoneham to emerge from the fog with the winner. Fawley AFC meanwhile reproduced last season s Cup form by taking the lead and then holding Southern League Moneyfields to a one all draw after ninety minutes before exiting the Russell-Cotes Cup nine eight on penalties. Happily all fixtures completed on a chilly Saturday and whist every effort is made to make this slightly different each week with limited success sadly three words or phrases occur with total regularity Sholing win, Dan Mason and Lee Wort. And so is the case this time as the Boatmen Sunday, 18 November /19 Edition #22 Page 25 of 26

26 notched up win number thirteen by beating Baffins Milton Rovers three one with Dan Mason scoring twice after a Lee Wort goal. Portland moved in to second place, their highest League position since their Championship season, with Jamie Symes scoring both goals in the two one defeat of Team Solent, a result that leaves the latter rooted in bottom spot. Horndean drop to third place after a one all draw at Bashley, a late goal from Dan Munday rescuing a point for the home side in front of the largest attendance of the day, and AFC Portchester marked Manager Mick Catlin s first League match in charge with a three one defeat of Shaftesbury. The game between Bournemouth and Lymington, both sides very much in the goals of late, ended in a best of three win for the Poppies, whilst Alresford went down to two Jude Nwachukwu goals at Brockenhurst. Tadley claimed their first win in seven and ended Hamble Club s recent run with a two one victory at Barlows Park but Christchurch failed to build on their goalscoring feats of midweek going down four one at home to Hamworthy United. Luke Stone scored twice against his former Club and Mickey Finch maintained his scoring form following his move from Bournemouth. At the lower end of the table Andover New Street came back from conceding two goals in the first eleven minutes at Fareham to share the points courtesy of a Callum Sweeney double and Bemerton Heath climbed off the bottom of the table as goals from Jordon Matthews and Scott Hassall gave them victory over a Cowes Sports side who are sliding rapidly down the table. All that means that Sholing are now ten points clear at the top whilst Bemerton, New Street and Team Solent occupy the bottom three places. In Hythe & Dibden had to sit the day out and watch the teams around them at the top of the table have a generally successful day. Amesbury were the biggest scorers of the day with seven against a Follands side who struggle away from home and have now conceded in excess of fifty goals in the League. Luke Greenway led the way with a hat trick and the Wiltshire side are now five points clear but AFC Stoneham, now in second place, have two games in hand. Stoneham, with two goals from Sergio Caballero, pulled off an impressive four nil win at the improving Newport in front of a three figure attendance but US Portsmouth perhaps dropped two points in a three all draw at Whitchurch a very good result for the home side. Romsey needed a last ditch winner to take the points at East Cowes Vics two goals for Dan Fox and Mark Lilley rolled back the years to a certain extent with all three goals in Fawley s win at Totton and Eling. Verwood and Laverstock & Ford shared four goals at Potterne Park two penalties for the home side s Charlie Gajic - but the bottom three all lost. New Milton went down two nil at Downton, Ringwood lost by the same score at Petersfield, the home side s first win in nine, and Andover Town also conceded two without reply at home to Alton for whom Matt Bunyan scored both goals. Things are beginning to take shape at the top and bottom of both Divisions but there is still a long way and winter to go. Thanks to all for advice of the attendances and goalscorers.
