4 WELCOME TO COOKS SQUARE With the season now well underway, and memories of the very wet start fading into our memories, we have the opportunity to assess positions on the table. This is particularly relevant with today s 1st Grade fixture. Lambton Jaffas are in the #1 position, and we congratulate them for their results, but Maitland are very close behind just 1 competition point and 2 goal difference behind. So with 1st vs 2nd this is certainly the Match of the Day. Our 7 0 result last week against Magic was a great confidence booster leading into today s game. Whilst the headlines of 4 penalties in one game, may grab the attention, the realty was that we played a dominant and attacking style of football that meant their defence was constantly under pressure, leading to the errors and fouls. Special mention to Matt Thomson for scoring 4 goals and an assist on a fifth. Maitland senior players and supporters should also keep a focus on the results and games of our Youth teams. They have also had a tough start to the season but still committed to improvement and development throughout the season. These boys are always present at senior games to provide their support so it is important that they receive an appropriate amount of support in response. The start of the season for our newly formed Zone Football League squad has been very successful with some strong wins and their enthusiasm and ongoing involvement in club activities is appreciated and admired. This coming week we have the extra bonus of the Round 5 FFA cup Coalfields Derby. We encourage all Magpie supporters to roll up to Cooks Square on Wednesday evening (17th), to support your club against our local rivals the Weston Workers. We may be favourites by virtue of our positions on the table, but in true Cup tradition nothing is certain, and upsets are possible. Make sure your there to cheer the Magpies to a win GOLD SPONSOR

9 UNDER 18 s - MATCH REPORT Round 8 Maitland FC v Lake Macquarie Lost 2-4 Buoyed by consecutive wins and a want to build some consistency we entered our game against Lakes confident. Notwithstanding our third game in seven days, five players backing up from Groovin the Moo and our first game in daylight! Well, Lakes were ready and after three minutes they had their first goal from a corner. Two of the tallest Lakes players were given the space in the 18 to jump for the ball unchallenged! We never attempted to win or contest for the ball. An easy goal to defend. The warning signs were there that it would be hard day at the office. Within minutes Lakes had broken into the box only for two fine saves from our GK keeping us in the game. Whilst we struggled to maintain possession, complete passes and win tackles at the 18 th minute we responded with a team goal. Some very quick combination play through the middle of the park allowed Mathew McKenzie to break into open space and then sprint twenty metres beating a defender and deliver a very well timed cut back pass to Harry Gordon who slotted the ball first time. One all and momentum change was apparent. The Lakes second goal was directly attributed to a defensive mistake at the 23 rd minute. Further attempts and saves by our GK kept us alive at the halftime. The second half didn t start any better with another defensive error allowing Lakes to score their third and fourth goals. A change in formation allowed pushing an extra player into the front third. The extra pressure forced a turnover and Liam Ryan was on hand to score. 4-2 and it ended, with a very bad day at the office. We are finding new ways to create goals for the opposition. If we are to compete with the better teams then we must improve in the back third. Poor communication and decision making is letting us. We scramble very well but that is not good enough. Players player in no particular order Olly, Jarrod, Liam. Coach/Managers player Jarrod, Liam, Olly. Round 9 Maitland FC v Broadmeadow Magic Won 1-0 Following on from our disappointing loss to Lakes we travelled to Magic Park aware that over the years we had never taken any points from our matches there. Our preparation was thorough during the week with key focus on defensive shape and then finishing. The match started in a typical Magic Maitland way strong physical contact, lots of long balls from Magic looking for their speedy front men and niggling away in the mid. Patience is a virtue! We were very patient in the front third, pressing as a unit and forcing Magic back and then into their long ball game. This is where we consistently won the long ball/2 nd ball. A pre game injury flared for Dyl Williams and he was forced from the field with Zac Wolfe stepping in. By this stage Magic had moved front third players across the park attempting to find space. We were broken down a number of times however our GK was up to it and also our defence from set pieces was very resolute. Harry Gordon, Matt Gardener and Isaac Hampson were tireless in attack and defence, causing the Magic keeper to make some fine saves to keep them in the game. Our second half was better than the first. Lots of intensity in tackles, movement off the ball and communication. Our constant pressing by Harry Gordon etal finally forced a mistake for Harry to pinch the ball, play across the approaching GK, leaving Isaac Hampson unmarked and able to slot home a very neat goal. Magic weren t out of it and continued to play aggressive football! A snap shot inside our box and a very fine reflex fingertip save by our GK kept the score in our favour. The engine room in the mid third Cam Innes, Michael Foster and Liam Ryan played to exhaustion and their second half performance was their best. Notwithstanding the success of the front and mid third the performance was highlighted by the resolute defence of the players in the back third and keeping our second clean sheet. Our back third included Hayden Gibson, Dylan Williams, Zac Brown, Jarrod Schwager, Zac Wolfe, Mathew McKenzie and Jeremy Savage. Seven players across the four positions all three substitutions due to injury or player exhaustion. Players Player and Coach/Manager Players in no particular order: Harry Gordon, Isaac Hampson, Michael Foster, Zac Brown, Oliver Mather and Jarrod Schwager.

11 UNDER 20 s - MATCH REPORT Round 8 Maitland FC v Lake Macquarie Won 3-1 Maitland hosted Lakes in our first day time home game of the year after a number of washouts and mid week games. After a disappointing loss to Weston mid week the guys were keen to make amends. Maitland started well, dominating possession and field position. Shear weight of possession resulted in a good opportunity being converted by Lachlan Hodgetts after some nice lead up work from Jye Mackellar and Tom Duggan. Maitland took a one nil lead to the break. The focus in the sheds was patience whilst maintaining possession and better decision making going forward. The second half commenced and the half time chat quickly realised benefits with Maitland moving two goals ahead shortly after the break with some neat work down the left side from Blake Rutherford and a smart cross to Tom who slotted the goal away. After being starved of possession Lakes started to lift after making some positional changes and ended up scoring a goal after some good lead up work before a shot deflected into our goal to make it two - one. It did not take long for Maitland to regain their two goal lead with Blake finishing off nicely after some excellent lead up play again through our middle third. Players player was Blake who caused havoc down the left all afternoon. Round 9 Maitland FC v Broadmeadow Magic Lost 0-2 A cracking afternoon saw Maitland travel to Magic Park for a game against a team entrenched in the top 4. The first half saw the game flow from end to end. Maitland failed early to shut the ball going into the centre of the Magic midfield resulting in the home team being able to move the ball with ease up the pitch with the Magic attacking raids being shut down with some very effective Maggies defence. The first half was matched 50/50 with both sides creating chances but neither side being able to take the lead. Just before half time Tom Duggan went down injured and unfortunately had to be taken from the field. The second half started much the same as the first with neither side dominating play. Maitland created some excellent chances down the left side through Jamie Tassell and Blake Rutherford and this continued throughout the second half. In the 70th minute a Magic corner and subsequent goal mouth scramble saw Magic take the lead. As Maitland made some changes to playing personnel and structure chances continued to be created but we failed to equal the ledger. In the 77th minute a long diagonal ball created a second chance for Magic and they converted to seal a two nil victory. Players Player was Adam Duggan who was strong all day in the back line.

13 FIRST GRADE - MATCH REPORT Round 8 - Maitland FC v Lake Macquarie Won 1-0 Round 8 saw the Magpies finally play their first match of the season in daylight hours. The match presented added incentives for the Maitland side as their opponents from Lake Macquarie featured a few ex Magpie players & coaching staff. This match was also a chance for the Magpies to push into the top 4 after a hectic start to the season. With Lakes enjoying a strong start to the season, it was the Magpies who took control of the game from the outset launching waves of attack at their opponents. Despite several close opportunities on the first half, the Magpies were unable to convert leaving the scores locked at 0 0 at the break. The second half was more competitive with the Lakes attack lifting only to be thwarted by the rock solid Magpies defence led by Blake Thompson & Shane Cansdell-Sherriff. With Ryan Broadley pulling the strings in the midfield, Maitland were dominating possession & continuing to make inroads into the Lakes defensive third. Midway through the half the constant pressure paid off when Liam Thornton played a pin-point volley through to Ryan Clarke who drove the ball home from an acute angle to beat Lakes keeper Benn Kelly on the near post. As the match wore down, Lakes threw everything at the Magpies but to no avail & as the final whistle sounded, Maitland had secured a tidy 1 0 victory. Round 9 Maitland FC v Broadmeadow Magic Won 7-0 In Round 9, the Magpies headed to Magic Park for the much anticipated clash against Broadmeadow Magic who were determined to get their season back on track after some lacklustre early season form. From the opening whistle is was to be Maitland s day as they piled on the pressure putting seven goals past a Magic side with no answers & leaving their normally passionate & parochial crowd sitting in silence. Before the dust had time to settle, the Magpies had put 3 past the home side to leave them wondering what was happening. The first was scored by Matt Thompson in the 3 rd minute after receiving a brilliant through ball from Ryan Clarke. Just 2 minutes later Thompson was on the scoreboard again with a penalty after Josh Dutton-Black was pulled down inside the box. Magic s disappointing afternoon didn t get any better when they lost Matt Hoole in the 20 th minute following a frustrated studs up tackle on Dutton-Black. In the 26 th minute, Matt Thompson returned the favour to Clarke when he found him in space at the back post to finish calmly and take the score to 3 0. Thompson then sealed a hat-trick by half-time when he converted again from the penalty spot after Jon Griffiths cut down a rampaging Ryan Broadley in the box. This found the Magpies heading into the break with a 4-0 lead & no intentions of taking their foot off the pedal. As was the pattern in the first half, Maitland continued to make inroads into Broadmeadow s defensive third & before long Magic gave away their third penalty of the afternoon when Dutton-Black was again brought down inside the box, this time by the keeper. Matt Thompson stepped up again to slot home his fourth for the afternoon. Ben Martin got in on the act in the 72 nd minute, when he controlled and slotted home from close range after some quality lead up work from Jordan Elphick. Martin had his second three minutes later when Ryan Broadley was again felled inside the box and the striker stepped up to make it 7-0. This was to be the final score line & seal a comprehensive victory for the Magpies who now look forward to welcoming competition leaders Lambton Jaffas to Cooks Sq. in Round 10.

18 FIRST GRADE MATCH REPORT Round 6 Maitland FC v Weston Bears Won 1-0 Wednesday 26 April found the Magpies hosting local rivals Weston in yet another washout replay. This was the Magpies 6 th night game of the season where their depths were truly tested with 6 regular starters missing from the line-up through injury, work commitments or rotation through the current heavy schedule. This presented a great opportunity for the club to promote its local talent with Jayden Ziernik & Matt Sokulski making their starting first grade debuts while Josh Williams, Tommy Duggan & Harry Gordon also made their debut s off the bench. Still hurting after recent successive losses to Hamilton Olympic & Valentine, the Magpies came out firing with Jordan Elphick, Ryan Clarke & Matt Comerford testing Weston s defence at every opportunity. Just 3 minutes into the match Matt Comerford found space outside the Weston box to neatly slot the ball past the Weston keeper to open the scoring for the home team. As Maitland continued to pile on the pressure, missed opportunities by the Pies kept Weston in the match. The second half saw Maitland continuing to apply the pressure while the visitors kept fighting for the equaliser. As the home side began to tire, fresh young legs were called upon & the match became a real arm wrestle to the end with the Magpie s defence holding firm against a Weston side who continued to pile on the pressure. After an action packed final few minutes of injury time, the whistle finally blew in the 94 th minute with the Magpies sealing the points to get their season back on track. WELCOME BRONZE SPONSORS

23 MAITLAND NPL YOUTH NEWS Our youth boys travelled to Lake Macquarie on Saturday and the day got off to a positive start with our 13's winning 1-0 in an at times 'ugly win'. They were clearly the better side but after missing some real good chances they 'panicked' trying to protect the lead and thanks to 2 great saves from GK Koby Walker they managed their first win of the season and wow they sang the team song with some gusto. The 14's continued our good day with a very comprehensive 3-1 win. They were always in charge and at times looked several classes above their opposition. Marcus Stellenberg continued his goal scoring spree bagging a hat-trick giving him 5 in the last 2 games. He was well supported by Captain Colby Shaw who led his team with his performance very well. Our 15's started great and lead 1-0 at half time thanks to a great central pass from Will Peterson that was calmly put away by Jordan Murphy, but the 2nd half was one we would rather forget with the opposition running through us to score 5 goals with the final score being 5-2 to Lakes. The 16's started impressively moving the ball around well and Daniel Tatchell scored the opening goal after a fine passing move. Lakes equalised before half time and the 2nd half was a real battle and the game remained deadlocked. In total our youth teams collected 7/12 points available which is a great result and achieves one of our goals after only 4 games for the club and will give us great encouragement in the weeks ahead. Next is a very strong Hamilton Olympic away on Sunday. On Sunday 7/5/17 our youths team travelled to Hamilton Olympic to play a very strong club who showed us, although we continue to improve, the gulf between the top teams and us is still big and we were shown up in a number of areas suffering big losses in the 13's, 15's and 16's. The only 'shining light' of the day was the performance from our vastly improved U/14 side against last years grand finalist. An early goal to Olympic meant we had to chase the game and we did so with great spirit and teamwork. A number of chances were created and we definitely were unlucky to not take points from the game with Olympic scoring another in the final minute of the game as we pushed extra players forward. Overall it was a very pleasing performance. This great game always gives you an opportunity to 'bounce back' and we have 2 games this week to put together performances that reflect the level of improvement and hard work we have been putting in.
