This is the third of four meetings between the two clubs this season...the Braves are competing in just third series all-time at Safeco Field and their first since June 2011 when they completed a three-game series sweep of the Mariners...Atlanta leads the all-time series 6-5, including a 4-2 mark at Safeco Field...WEST COAST ROAD TRIPPIN: Last Tuesday, the Braves opened an eight-game road trip to west coast as they traveled to Los Angeles (0-3), San Diego (0-3) and Seattle (Tuesday-Wednesday)...BRAVES OF LATE: The Braves dropped their sixth consecutive game on Sunday at San Diego, and are 3-7 over their last 10 games and in their last 30...They are 6-11 since the All-Star break after going before the break...atlanta went in the month of July and went in June, in May and 17-9 in March/April...LONG STRETCH: Yesterday s scheduled off day was the Braves first day off after playing 17 consecutive dates coming out of the All-Star break...beginning today, the Braves open a stretch in which they play 19 games over the next 20 calendar dates and 29 our of the next 30 days. LOSING STREAK REACHES SIX: Sunday s 10-inning, 4-3 loss at Petco Park kept the Braves winless on their current road trip (0-6) and increased the Braves losing streak to six games...the six-game skid is the longest such streak for the Braves since dropping seven straight games, April 29 to May 5...SWEPT, TWICE: Sunday s loss to the Padres marked the second consecutive series in which the Braves were swept and the second time this season in which the Braves suffered back-to-back sweeps (also April 29 to May 4). RISPING WOES CONTINUE: Braves batters went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Sunday at San Diego and are hitting at a.169 clip with runners in scoring position over their last six losses...during that span, the team has four extra base-hits and eight RBI with a.543 OPS...CERTAINLY HAD THEIR CHANCES: In innings eight through 12 on Saturday night, Braves batters went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, with the lone hit coming in the eighth inning by 3B Chris Johnson...Over the three extra innings (10, 11, 12), they were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position after having the leadoff batter of each inning reach base safely via a basehit. BULLISH BEHAVIOR: On Sunday at San Diego, the Braves dropped a 4-3 decision in 10 innings, with reliever David Hale being saddled with the loss...the loss charged to Atlanta s bullpen extended the bullpen losing streak to nine games...elias SAYS: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the nine-game bullpen losing streak marks the second longest such streak in franchise history (the record is 10 games set in 1912) and the third time it has happened with the last coming July 30 to August 11, The other such streak was June 16 to September 20, TWO FEW: After plating just two runs in the Braves 13-inning, 3-2 loss on Saturday at San Diego, Atlanta s record dropped to 7-33 overall when scoring two or fewer runs and it was their third consecutive such loss...since May 12, the Braves have been held to two or fewer runs in 23 of their 39 losses and own an overall record of 1-23 in such contests...from May 12 to July 25, the Braves dropped 19 consecutive games in which they scored two or fewer runs. MILESTONES ON THE HORIZON: OF Justin Upton is 7-for-23 (.304) on the current road trip and since the start of July, he owns a.305 (32-for-105) batting average...he currently stands three hits shy of his 1,000th career hit and four RBI away from career #500...Upton s first career hit came August 4, 2007 at Los Angeles with an infield single to third base...his first career RBI came the following day, August 5, also at Dodger Stadium...UP-TON HERE: Upton has hit safely in 20 of his last 27 games, since July 4 (32-for-99,.323), with 10 of those games being multi-hit contests...over those last 27 games, he is batting.323, lifting his season batting average 13 points, from.271 to.284. TRADE WINDS: The Braves and Chicago Cubs on Thursday completed a three-player trade, as the Braves acquired infielder Emilio Bonifacio, left-handed pitcher James Russell and cash considerations in exchange for minor-league catcher Victor Caratini...BRAVE NEW WORLD: Bonifacio, 29, played in 681 career games over parts of eight seasons with Arizona ( ), Washington (2008), Miami ( ), Toronto (2013), Kansas City (2013) and Chicago (2014)...The switch-hitter posted a.279 (77-for-276) batting average with the Cubs in 69 games this season...russell, 28, had spent his entire five-year career with the Cubs...He worked in 316 career games, including 311 out of the bullpen (all five of his starts came in 2011) with Chicago. STRIKING OUT THE SIDE: Closer Craig Kimbrel saved his 32nd game on July 28 (tied for second in the league with MIL s Francisco and trailing STL s Trevor Rosenthal) with a ninth inning...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Monday s outing marked the 18th time in Kimbrel s career that he has faced exactly three batters and struck out each batter, giving him the most such outings in Major League history (Trevor Hoffman and former Brave Billy Wagner ranked second on the list with 15)...THIRTY SOMETHING: RHP Craig Kimbrel notched his 30th save of the season with a ninth inning on July 18 vs. Philadelphia...This marks Kimbrel s fourth straight 30-save season, after recording 46 rescues as a rookie in 2011, 42 in 2012 and 50 last season...high PERCENTAGE: Kimbrel s career save percentage of 90.0% (171-of-190) ranks third all-time among Major League pitchers with at least 150 opportunities, behind only Eric Gagne (91.7%) and John Smoltz (91.1%)...THE K IS THE WAY: Now in his fourth full season, Kimbrel has fanned an amazing 43% (456-of-1062) of the batters he has faced in the regular season, the highest strikeout percentage in history among relievers with at least 150 career saves (see chart at right). PETE VAN WIEREN, LONGTIME BRAVES BROADCASTER, PASSES AWAY: Pete Van Wieren, the longtime Atlanta Braves broadcaster, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at the age of 69 after his long battle with cancer...a native of Rochester, NY, Van Wieren spent 33 years broadcasting Braves games and was affectionately known as The Professor for his incredible study and knowledge of the game...pete and his longtime broadcasting partner, Skip Caray, were inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame together in 2004, joining partner and great friend Ernie Johnson...He joined Turner Sports in December, 1975 as a Braves broadcaster...pete also broadcast games for the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Flames and Big Ten Conference football games...he also called NBA games on TBS and TNT...In April, 2010 Pete released his book Of Mikes and Men: A Lifetime of Braves Baseball which was co-written with Jack Wilkinson...He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Elaine, sons Jon and Steve, daughter-in-law Starla, and granddaughters Chaney, Grace and Becca. Has made one career relief appearance against the Seattle Mariners. Earlier this season he suffered the loss on June 3 after allowing two earned runs in the seventh inning of a tie game. Wood entered out of the bullpen for the 7th and 8th innings. Since returning to the rotation on 6/25, owns a 2-2 record with a 3.12 ERA (15 ER/43.1 IP) in seven starts, fi ve of which were quality starts.
