Javier Báez yesterday went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI he belted a goahead solo homer in the sixth inning then brought home the game-winning run with a 10th-inning bunt single. Eight Cubs relievers combined to allow just one run in 6.0 innings, lowering the bullpen s season ERA to a N.L.-best 3.35 the team yesterday used nine pitchers in a game for the first time since September 5, 2014, vs. the Pirates. Victor Caratini yesterday was 1-for-2 with a RBI and was hit by a pitch he s hitting.462 (6-for-13) with a double, homer and seven RBI in his last five games since this past Saturday s doubleheader in Washington, D.C. START ME UP, OR THE ROLLING STONES 1981 HIT: Cubs starting pitchers have posted a major league-best 2.70 ERA (44 ER/146.2 IP) in the team s last 27 games starting August 16 the 2.70 ERA in that span is ahead of the Mets rotation s 2.76 ERA and the Braves starters 2.93 ERA. Chicago s starters have posted a.651 opponent OPS since August 16, the fourthlowest mark in the majors trailing only Atlanta (.566), Tampa Bay (.608) and the Mets (.630). Tonight s game marks the Cubs second-ever Friday night game at The Friendly Confines, joining Sept. 8, 2017 s contest vs. the Brewers (2-0 loss). OUR BÁE: Javier Báez reached 30 homers and 100 RBI with a solo home run Sept. 2 to become just the fifth Cub to record a 30-homer, 100-RBI campaign before or in their age 25 season, joining Ernie Banks (1955), Kris Bryant (2016), Anthony Rizzo (2015) and Ron Santo (1964, 1965). Báez is already just the fifth player in major league history to reach 35 doubles, nine triples, 30 homers, 100 RBI and 20 stolen bases in a single season, joining Carlos Beltran (2004), Andre Dawson (1983), Hank Aaron (1961) and Chuck Klein (1932). Báez is already the first player in franchise history to reach 35 doubles, 30 homers, 100 RBI and 20 stolen bases in the same season. Báez is one of seven players to reach 30 homers and 100 RBI this season, including four in the N.L. the others in the Senior Circuit to accomplish the feat: Cincinnati s Eugenio Suarez (32 homers, 101 RBI) and Colorado teammates Nolan Arenado (34 homers, 100 RBI) and Trevor Story (33 homers, 102 RBI).
