Since coming over from Texas and then making his first start with the Cubs, August 1 in Pittsburgh, Hamels is 4-0 with a 0.79 ERA (3 ER/34.0 IP) in five outings, walking eight and striking out 30. According to STATS, Inc., Hamels is the first lefty in the live-ball era to go at least 5.0 innings and allow no more than one run in each of his first five appearances for any team. Hamels aims to become the sixth qualifying Cub to go unbeaten in August with a sub-1.00 ERA for the month, and the first since Jake Arrieta in 2015 (6-0, 0.43 ERA) prior to Arrieta, Mark Prior turned the trick in 2003 (5-0, 0.69). MEN AT WORK: The Cubs are in the fourth day of a stretch that began Tuesday in Detroit in which the team plays 23 games in 23 days through September 12. Chicago owns the best record in the National League and entered this series unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 sets, going in this span starting with the final series before the All-Star Break. This homestand against the Reds (1-0) and Mets (three games starting Monday) represent the Cubs lone home contests in a stretch of 17 of 24 games on the road through September 9 following this homestand, the team leaves for their longest trek of the season, a four-city, 11-day, 11-game trip through Atlanta, Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Washington D.C. from August 30-Sept. 9. THREE OF A KIND: Including last night s two-run homer in the first inning, Anthony Rizzo has now homered in at least three-straight games for the sixth time in his career he went deep in a career-best four-straight games, July 29-August 1, With 21 homers this season, Rizzo has reached the 20-homer mark six-straight years beginning in 2013 he s one of just 10 Cubs ever to record at least six 20- homer campaigns, and just the third left-handed hitter, joining Billy Williams (13 20-homer seasons) and Bill Nicholson (six). EVERYBODY S WORKIN FOR THE WEEKEND: This weekend marks MLB and the MLB Players Association second-annual Players Weekend, in which players will display personalized nicknames on alternate uniforms inspired by those found in youth leagues players can alo wear unique spikes, batting gloves and other accessories. OUR BÁE: Javier Báez has homered in two-straight games, and last night belted his 27th homer of the campaign he s just the fourth Cubs middle infielder to reach the 27-homer mark, joining Rogers Hornsby in 1929, Ernie Banks (seven times from ) and Ryne Sandberg (twice in ) thanks to Ed Hartig. Báez is already just the third different Cub in franchise history to reach 30 doubles, five triples, 25 homers and 15 stolen bases in a single season, joining Ryne Sandberg (1985 and 1992) and Alfonso Soriano (2007) thanks to Christopher Kamka. Báez s 93 RBI lead the N.L. lead and are third-most in the majors (Boston s J.D. Martinez leads, 109) Báez also ranks at or near the top in several offensive categories, as seen on the left side of this page. PITCHING IN: Cubs pitchers have posted a 1.29 ERA (9 ER/62.2 IP) in the team s last seven games dating to the start of the last road trip, August 16 in Pittsburgh, walking 18 and striking out 44 while holding opponents to a.255 average the team s starting pitchers have pitched to a 1.73 ERA (8 ER/41.2 IP) while the relievers have produced a 0.43 ERA (1 ER/21.0 IP). ABOUT THE BATS: The Cubs have plated 15 runs in the last two games after a five-game stretch in which the team scored one run or less in each contest, tying the franchise record previously set May 19-23, 2009 in fact, the Cubs scored exactly one run in five games in a row for only the second time in franchise history the Cubs also turned this trick from August 27-September 1, 1934, when the club turned in a 2-3 record. Chicago has homered in a season-high eight-straight games dating to August 15 vs. Milwaukee, hitting 12 homers during this run (eight solo shots, three two-run homers and one three-run shot) Chicago last homered in at least nine-straight games during an 11-game streak, Sept. 24, 2017-March 31 of this season. COMFORTS OF HOME: Chicago s.629 home winning percentage (39-23) ranks second in the N.L. behind the Phillies (41-22,.651) and fourth-best in the majors Boston (46-18,.719) and the Yankees (45-20,.692) pace the majors yet, Chicago has played just 62 home games, tied for the fourth-fewest in the majors. The Cubs are unbeaten in their last 12 home series starting May 25 with a three-game set vs. the Giants, going in that span this started following a season-high four-game home skid, May 13-23, against the White Sox (0-1), Atlanta (0-1) and Cleveland (0-2). LEFT IS RIGHT: Cole Hamels last night made the 68th start by a left-handed pitcher for the Cubs this season, already surpassing the 66 starts made by Cubs southpaws a season ago only three times in franchise history have the Cubs had more than 68 games started by left-handed pitchers in a single season: 1961 (69 starts), 2007 (85 starts) and 1966 (89 starts) thanks to Ed Hartig. 20/20 VISION: Javier Báez has 21 stolen bases to go along with his 27 home runs (including his homer last night) he is the first Cub to record a 20/20 season since outfielder Corey Patterson had 24 homers and 32 stolen bases in 2004 Báez is the first Cub middle infielder to turn the trick since Ryne Sandberg had 26 homers and 22 stolen bases in 1991 Javy is now one of six players in franchise history to post a 20/20 campaign. Báez is one of only four players (and the only N.L. er) in all of baseball to reach 20 homers and 20 stolen bases already this season, joining Boston s Mookie Betts, Cleveland s Jose Ramirez and Los Angeles Mike Trout. IN GOOD STANDING: Since finding themselves and 4.5-games behind Milwaukee in the N.L. Central Division following a loss on May 30, the Cubs have gone (.595) to make up 8.0 games in the standings over the now third-place Brewers the Cubs have played 2.5 games better than the second-place Cardinals in this span. SECOND HALF SPLENDOR: In the last four seasons starting in 2015, the Cubs have amassed a record after the All-Star Break, 79 games above.500, and the team s.655 winning percentage is by far the best in the baseball Cleveland is a distant second with a.621 mark (157-96) in that span, which would represent an 9.0-game deficit in the mythical standings.
