1 Game #80, Road Game #39 Friday, June 30th Harbor Park 7:05 PM Durham Bulls (48-31 / 1st) vs. Norfolk Tides (34-46 / 4th / 14.5 GB) LHP Ryan Yarbrough (7-4, 4.10) vs. LHP Chris Lee (3-4, 6.35) Tonight s Game The Bulls begin the second leg of their two-city road trip tonight, with game one of their four-game series against the Norfolk Tides, Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Bulls split their first series of the road trip in Indianapolis, where they won the first two games with back-to-back shutouts before dropping the last two. Norfolk is coming off a four-game series split as well in the first half of their eight-game homestand, as the Tides bookended their series against Louisville with wins. The two South Division foes have faced each other 11 times already this year, with the Bulls owning a 6-5 edge including a 2-1 record at Harbor Park. Last Night The Durham Bulls ended up on the wrong end of a high-profile pitching match up Thursday night, as the Bulls bats were held in check by Indians starter Steven Brault in a 4-0 loss at Victory Field. Brault (7-3) tied a career-high with eight scoreless innings while striking out nine and lowering his ERA to an International League best Durham starter Brent Honeywell was on the other end of the duel, as the newly-named Futures Game hurler allowed a pair of first inning runs and one more in the fifth to end with three runs allowed on eight hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts over five innings pitched. Shutout No. 3 After blanking Indianapolis in the first two games of the series the Bulls had the tables turned on them in the finale Thursday night, as the Indians shutout Durham in the 4-0 loss. The scoreless game marked the third time this season that the Bulls were held off the scoreboard, joining a 4-0 loss in Rochester on May 23 and an 8-0 defeat in Columbus on June 15. The Durham lineup did manage a respectable six hits in the game, but were held to just one extra-base hit and no walks by Steven Brault and Tyler Eppler.Despite the shutout, the Bulls are on a drastically lower rate than last season, where the team was held off the scoreboard 19 times. One Series, Two Halves The four-game series between the Bulls and the Indians played out in two drastically different two-game sets, with visiting Durham dominating the first two contests before Indianapolis took control over the last two games. The Bulls won the first two games with back-to-back shutouts, winning by a combined 9-0 score. The Indians bats pulled a 180 over the last two contests however, plating 11 runs in game three and four in the finale to outpace the Bulls The four-game split marks the third time in five four-game series this year that the Bulls have gone 2-2. Walks Poison the Honeypot Starting Pitcher Brent Honeywell was uncharacteristically wild for the third straight game last night, as the 6 2 right-hander issued three walks over his five innings pitched. Two of the free passes came in the first inning, and directly led to a pair of runs for the Indians. Honeywell has flown through the minor leagues since being drafted in 2014 in part due to his ability to pound the zone, with the Rays No. 2 prospect having just six combined games with three or more walks prior to this season. The 22-year-old now has three straight games with three or more walks and five such games total dating back to his start of the season with Double-A Montgomery. June Brought Alot of Wins With today marking the last day of June, the Bulls have already set a new high for games won in a month this season with 17. Durham can finish the month with an record with a win tonight, which would give them a.621 winning %. While good, the Bulls.696 winning % with a 16-7 record in April still stands as the season s best. Bulls All-Stars Four members of the first place Bulls were selected to the International League All-Star game on Thursday, including infielders Willy Adames and Patrick Leonard, catcher Mike Marjama, and relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge. The quartet will also be joined by Durham manager Jared Sandberg, who will serve on the IL coaching staff in Tacoma, WA on July 12. Adames has been on fire in the month of June, batting.357/.442/.561 for a OPS that rates among the league s best. The 21-year-old shortstop is batting overall on the year, and will be attending his third straight All-Star Game. Leonard began the year on a torrid pace, as the third baseman took home the IL Player of the Month award for April. He has cooled since, but still leads the team with 40 RBI to go along with a.284 average and 6 HR. Marjama leads all IL catchers with a 51.7 caught stealing percentage (min. 15 attempts) while batting a team-high.286 with 5 HR and 31 RBI. Lastely Kittredge is 4-1 with a 1.79 ERA, and leads all IL relievers with only 8.62 baserunners/9 IP. Futures Game While he won t be representing the Bulls at the IL All-Star game, RHP Brent Honeywell will be representing the Rays and Team USA at the MLB Futures Game in Miami, FL on July 9. The No. 2 prospect in the Rays system and the No. 23 prospect in all of baseball, Honeywell is 8-7 with a 4.43 ERA overall this year including a 7-6 mark with a 4.87 ERA over 13 starts with Durham. The Georgia native has a total of 103 Ks on the year (83 with the Bulls) one of the top totals in all of MiLB. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak L2 Home Road vs. RHP (starter) vs. LHP (starter) vs. South Division vs. North Division 11-8 vs. West Division Day 4-8 Night (5:05+) Extra Innings 3-5 Shutouts 9-3 One-Run Games 11-6 Three or fewer Four or more Scoring First Opponent Scores First Leading after Trailing after Tied after Series Openers 15-9 Series Finales 8-10 Rubber Matches 3-2 Doubleheader Games 3-1 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/0/1 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/1 3-Game Series 9-4 Sweep/Swept 3/1 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 4/2/3 Sweep/Swept 2/1 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 4-3 Tuesday 8-5 Wednesday 8-3 Thursday 7-5 Friday 8-3 Saturday 9-4 Sunday 4-8 April 16-7 May June July 0-0 August 0-0 September BULLS vs. TIDES Overall 6-5 DBAP 4-4 Harbor Park Head-to-Head BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Saturday, July Norfolk RHP Austin Pruitt (0-0, 1.04) LHP Jayson Aquino (2-7, 4.50) 7:05 pm Sunday, July Norfolk RHP Yonny Chirinos (6-3, 3.63) RHP Gabriel Ynoa (1-6, 7.40) 4:05 pm Monday, July Norfolk RHP Hunter Wood (1-1, 9.22) RHP Tyler Wilson (2-4, 4.73) 7:05 pm Tuesday, July 4 vs. Charlotte RHP Brent Honeywell (7-7, 4.91) TBD 6:05 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
