1 Game #101, Road Game #47 Monday, July 24th Coca-Cola Field 7:05 PM Durham Bulls (61-39 / 1st) vs. Buffalo Bisons (43-58 / 5th / 20.5 GB) RHP Yonny Chirinos (10-3, 2.89) vs. RHP Murphy Smith (2-2, 3.23) Tonight s Game The Bulls hit the road for a week beginning tonight with game one of a four-game series against the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. The first place Bulls are coming off a 4-3 homestand, in which the club took two of three games against West Division leading Indianapolis before splitting their four-game set vs. Lehigh Valley. The Bisons, meanwhile, are fresh off a 5-2 road trip which culminated with three straight wins in Louisville. The Bulls and Bisons played one previous series against each other back in April, where Durham took two of three from the DBAP. Last Game The Durham Bulls battled through rain and an early deficit against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs before finally emerging with a dramatic victory Sunday evening, as Jake Bauers infield, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Bulls a 4-3 walk-off win at the DBAP. The Bulls and IronPigs entered the final frame in a 3-3 tie, having played through three lead changes and varying degrees of rain throughout the contest. Bauers stepped to the plate in the ninth with runners on second and third and two outs, and proceeded to hit a soft ground ball on the left side of the infield that he beat out for a an RBI, infield hit resulting in a 4-3 walk-off win for the Bulls. Who Needs a Walk Off HR? Bulls slugger Jake Bauers stepped to the dish last night with two outs in the ninth and the winning run standing at third base. The Rays No. 5 prospect may have had visions of his second career walk-off home run in his head but it turns out all the lefty needed was a dribbler off the end of the bat, as Bauers delivered a game-winning, infield hit that traveled roughly 70 feet from the plate. The walk-off victory was the second of the season for the Bulls, who also won in dramatic fashion on May 14 vs. Toledo thanks to a Patrick Leonard RBI double. That s Not to Say HRs Are Bad While Bauers may not have needed the long ball to give the Bulls the win Sunday, the team wouldn t have been in that position without a two-run home run by Curt Casali in the sixth. Durham entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-1 and facing the real possibility of the game being delayed or even called due to rain. After the umpires talked with Lehigh starter Ben Lively, the game continued through heavy rain in the sixth. The Bulls took advantage of the inclement weather, as Johnny Field singled with one out before Casali crushed a go-ahead tworun blast over the Blue Monter in left. The big fly put Durham briefly ahead 3-2, and ultimately allowed the team to enter the bottom of the ninth in a 3-3 tie. Short, But Sweet from Honeywell Starting pitcher Brent Honeywell may not have pitched very deep into Sunday evening s game, but the 22-year-old righthander certainly made the most of his time on the bump. Honeywell gave up two runs on four hits over his five innings pitched on the night but the headline was his 11 strikeouts, a new Triple-A high for the Rays No. 2 prospect. Honeywell set the tone early by striking out the side in the first, and followed it up with two punch outs in the each of the second, third, and fourth frames. Honeywell then concluded his night the same way he started it with his 11th and final K. The flury of fans eclipsed Honeywell s previous Triple-A high of 10 strikeouts from 5/11 vs. Columbus, and fell just one K shy of tying his career-high of 12 which came in his first start of the season with Double-A Montgomery. Honeywell Not the Only One With Ks Honeywell s 11 K performance may have set the tone, but the Bulls starter wasn t the only pitcher racking up the strikeouts Sunday night. The Durham staff picked up seven more punch outs after Honeywell s departure, with Chaz Roe and Jose Alvarado recording two while Diego Castillo finished with three. All together, the Bulls ended the evening with 18 total Ks, tying the team s season high which they d accomplished twice before. 100 Game Milestone Sunday marked the 100th game of the season for the Bulls, providing a handy reference point to compare this year s first place club to past teams. The Bulls is the team s best record through the first 100 games of the season since 2013, when Durham started thanks to an eight-game win streak leading up to the All-Star break was also the last time the Bulls won the Governors Cup, as the club finished with the best record in the IL at before eventually defeating Pawtucket three games to one in the finals. Second Half State of the League Durham s record may be good enough for a comfortbale 11.5 game lead in the South Division, but it would only put them in the middle of a tight race in the loaded Noth Division.
