The Bulls took the first game of the series on Friday with a 5-1 victory before falling in walk-off fashion last night with a 2-1 defeat in 10 innings. Both teams will be using spot starters for today s final matchup, with RHP Ryan Garton for the Bulls taking on LHP Cesar Ramos for the IronPigs. Last Game The Durham Bulls and Lehigh Valley IronPigs played to a 1-1 stalemate through the first nine innings Saturday night, before the Pigs pulled out the victory with an RBI single by Scott Kingery to hand the Bulls a 2-1 loss at Coca-Cola Park. The 10th inning began with two quick outs by Bulls reliever Diego Castillo, before Herlis Rodriguez doubled down the right field line to put the winning run in scoring position. One batter later, Kingery ended the game with a walk-off, RBI single to left to give the IronPigs the 2-1 win. The pitchers duel saw both starting pitchers, Yonny Chirinos for Durham and Zach Eflin for Lehigh Valley, give up one run over six innings before giving way to the bullpens. The Bulls lone tally came on a solo home run by Jake Bauers in the fourth, while the IronPigs answered in the fifth on a two-out, wild pitch by Chirinos that plated Matt Williams from third. Walk-Off Revenge The IronPigs 2-1, walk-off victory over the Bulls Saturday night served as a revenge game of sorts, giving Lehigh Valley some payback for the Bulls 4-3, walk-off victory less than a week ago in Durham. The Bulls win last Sunday saw Jake Bauers end the game in the bottom of the ninth on an infield, RBI single that snuck past the pitcher on the mound. Last night s walk-off defeat was the fourth of the year against Durham, and their second in the month of July joining a 5-4 defeat in Norfolk on 7/14. Conversely, the Bulls was produced two walk-off victories on the year. Bauers, Kay, and Not Much Else First baseman Jake Bauers and third baseman Grant Kay produced the vast majority of the Bulls offense Saturday night, with Bauers going 2-4 with a home run, RBI, and run scored, while Kay went 2-4 with a double. The duo collected both of Durham s extra-base hits and four of the team s six total hits on the night, while also driving in the road team s lone run of the evening. The only other base knocks for the Bulls came from Kean Wong and Taylor Featherston, who both finished with a single and a walk. Chirinos Streak Ends Starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos put up his team-leading 11th quality start of the season Saturday, as the right-hander held the IronPigs to one run on four hits and seven strikeouts over six innings pitched. The standout performance wasn t enough to extend the Venezuela native s win streak however, as he received a no-decision in the Bulls 2-1, 10-inning defeat. The ND snapped a streak of six straight starts resulting in a win for Chirinos, a stretch that catapulted the right-hander into a tie for the IL lead with 11 wins on the year. Bauers Big Fly Jake Bauers produced the Bulls only run of the night on Saturday with a solo home run in the fourth that temporarily gave the road team a 1-0 lead. The homer was the ninth of the season for the left-handed slugger, but his first since he went deep with a solo blast on the Fourth of July. Bauers nine long balls ranks second on the team, but is tied for just 34th in the league this year. The slugger may not be sending the ball out of the yard at quite the expected pace but he s made up for the relative lack of dingers by slugging 25 doubles, the fourthhighest total in the league. 7x7 (x6) Johnny Field had his seven game hit streak snapped last night after going 0-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. The seven-game stretch tied Field s season-long streak, which he set in the seven games just before starting his current mark. Additionally, Field had a then-season-high six game streak end just before starting the initial seven-game hit streak. When it s all put together, Field has picked up a hit in 20 of his last 23 games, over which time he s batting.316 (30-95) with two home runs, 20 doubles, and 15 RBI over the three-week stretch that dates back to Independence Day. Race for the Top Durham s record has them running away with a 12.5 game lead in the IL South Division, but it would only put them in the middle of a tight race in the loaded Noth Division.
