1 Game #30, Home Game #15 Tuesday, May 9th Durham Bulls Athletic Park 7:05 PM Columbus Clippers (11-18 / 3rd / 4.5 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (21-8 / 1st) RHP Michael Peoples (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Kyle Winkler (0-0, 4.50) Tonight s Game The Bulls and Clippers match up again for game two of the four-game series at the DBAP. WIth their victory in game one of the series, the Bulls improved their league-leading record to 21-8 and have now won 10 of their last 12 games. The Clippers conversely are now on a four-game losing streak, having dropped three straight vs. Indianapolis prior to coming to Durham. Last Night The Durham Bulls league-leading offense brought their big sticks to ballpark Monday night, as the Bulls clubbed 11 hits, seven extra-base hits, in a 9-2 route over the visiting Columbus Clippers at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Eight of the nine Bulls batters reached base safely at least once, while five separate players recorded at least one extra-base knock. Durham tied a season-high with four doubles in the contest, with the team also collecting two home runs and a triple in their series-opening onslaught. Left-fielder Jake Bauers (2-3, HR, 2B, 3 R, RBI, BB) led the attack, while third baseman Patrick Leonard (2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) finished with a big night as well. Getting off on the Right Foot (or Cleat) The Bulls have won eight of their nine series so far this season, and a big reason why is the club s ability to jump out to a series lead with game one wins. Durham is now 9-1 in series openers this year after Monday evening s victory, with the club s lone series-opener loss also corresponding with their only series loss against Gwinnett on 4/14. Big Night for the Big Bats Durham s heavy hitters put on an extra-base hit display Monday night, with the lineup producing a season-high seven hits of two or more bases. Five different players had at least one extra-base knock, led by Jake Bauers who finished 2-3 with a home run, double, RBI, and three runs scored. Chirinos Saves the Pen The Durham bullpen has been outstanding so far this season, but even they need a rest every once in a while. Enter RHP Yonny Chirinos, who posted a quality start on Monday by holding Columbus to two runs over 6.2 IP. Chirinos may not have the gaudy strikeout numbers of some of his teammates, but the Venezuelan hurler has consistently chewed up innings throughout his career. The 6 2 right-hander has gone at least 6.1 innings in all six of his starts this year, including back-to-back outings of 7 IP to start the season with Double-A Montgomery. Cornering the Market on Hitting Streaks Bulls catcher Curt Casali currently has the longest hitting streak in the International League this season at 16 straight games, but with the backstop sitting out Monday teammate Patrick Leonard crept one game closer. Leonard s 2-4 performance last night extended his own hitting streak to a career-best 14 games, giving Durham two of the three top hitting streaks in the league this year. The only Bull to crash the top 3 party is Indianapolis Chris Bostick, who had a 15 game streak come to an end on 5/3. There s More than One Way to Get on Base While both Casali and Leonard have been turning heads with their impressive hitting streaks, the duo also rank highly in the IL s on-base streak. Casali has reached base safely in 21 straight games (2nd longest this season), while Leonard s stretch is currently at 18 games (T-4th). There s a third Bull climbing up the charts as well however, as Jake Bauers has reached in 14 consecutive games after his 2-3 game on Monday. Bauers hasn t gotten a hit in more than three straight games over the stretch, but his league-leading 19 walks has helped to keep the streak alive. Gillaspie Heating Up in May Tampa Bay s No. 5 prospect Casey Gillaspie struggled to start the season in the month of April, batting.186 (16-86) with two home runs and 12 RBI. The switch hitting first baseman is showing signs of heating up at the dish in the season s second month though, as Gillaspie s 2-4 game on Monday raised his May average to.381 (8-21) with two homers and three RBI through five games. Off the Schnide OF Johnny Field finally got his first first for the Bulls since returning from the DL on Monday, going 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Field had previously gone 0-9 over his previous three games with the since being activated on 5/5. Prior to injuring his left thumb sliding into second base, Field started the season 7-21 (.333) with two homers and three RBI over his first five games. Lots of Players Scoring Lots of Runs With the Bulls leading the IL in runs scored by a healthy margin (they lead second place Charlotte ), several players are racking up high runs scored totals as a result. Leading the pack is Bauers, who ranks second in the league with 23 runs scored. Leonard also is in the top five with 20 runs scored. Seven other players have crossed the plate at least 10 times this year, including Willy Adames (15), Casey Gillaspie (15), Curt Casali (13), Jake Hager (12), Mike Marjama (12), and Granden Goetzman (10). 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak W1 Home 10-4 Road 11-4 vs. RHP (starter) 16-7 vs. LHP (starter) 5-1 vs. South Division 11-5 vs. North Division 5-1 vs. West Division 5-2 Day 3-4 Night (5:05+) 18-4 Extra Innings 2-2 Shutouts 3-0 One-Run Games 5-2 Three or fewer 8-5 Four or more 8-1 Scoring First 12-3 Opponent Scores First 9-5 Leading after Trailing after Tied after Series Openers 9-1 Series Finales 3-5 Rubber Matches 1-0 Doubleheader Games 2-0 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/0/0 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/0 3-Game Series 5-1 Sweep/Swept 1/1 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 2/0/0 Sweep/Swept 1/0 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 2-0 Tuesday 4-0 Wednesday 3-1 Thursday 4-0 Friday 3-1 Saturday 5-1 Sunday 0-5 April 16-7 May 5-1 June 0-0 July 0-0 August 0-0 September BULLS vs. CLIPPERS Overall 1-0 DBAP 1-0 Huntington Park Head-to-Head 3-6 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Wednesday, May 10th vs. Columbus RHP Jake Faria (4-0, 3.13) RHP Travis Banwart (0-2, 12.00) 7:05 pm Thursday, May 11th vs. Columbus RHP Brent Honeywell (2-2, 4.35) LHP Ryan Merritt (2-3, 4.41) 10:35 am Friday, May 12th vs. Toledo LHP Ryan Yarbrough (2-2, 3.34) TBD 7:05 pm Saturday, May 13th vs. Toledo RHP Yonny Chirinos (2-0, 4.15) TBD 6:35 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
