1 Game #133, Home Game #71 Sunday, August 27th Durham Bulls Athletic Park 5:05 PM Norfolk Tides (62-71 / 3rd / 18.5 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (80-52 / 1st) RHP Logan Verrett (2-5, 4.63) vs. RHP Burch Smith (0-1, 3.60) Tonight s Game The Bulls wrap up the home portion of their 2017 schedule today with the rubber match of their three-game series against the Norfolk Tides, Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The teams split the first two games of the series, with Norfolk running away with a 12-0 win on Friday before Durham countered with a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Today also marks the final game of the season between the two South Division rivals. The Tides have had by far the most success of any divisional foe, but the Bulls still have a record overall and a 5-5 mark at home. Last Game The Durham Bulls used a three-run home run from Taylor Featherston and a shutout performance from Yonny Chirinos Saturday night to come away with a 3-2 win over the Norfolk Tides at the DBAP. A third-straight sellout crowd of 10,983 fans saw the Bulls take a 3-0 lead and hold on to survive a late Tides rally. Featherston knocked in all the Durham runs with a three-run homer in the fourth that looked to be more than enough before Norfolk came storming back in the ninth. The Bulls ultimately escaped with a 3-2 win when reliever Diego Castillo stranded the bases loaded to secure Durham s 80th victory of the season. Yonny on the Spot Starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos was in vintage form for the Bulls last night, as the right-handed hurler allowed just one hit over six scoreless frames en route to earning his 12th win of the season. The scoreless outing was the fifth time this year Chirinos has tossed at least six shutout innings, but his first such performance since throwing eighth scoreless frames vs. Toledo on July 7. The standout start lowered the Venezuelan s ERA to 2.85, the fifth lowest mark in the IL. Chirinos also ranks among the league s leaders in Wins (2nd, 12), WHIP (2nd, 1.00), and IP (4th, 136.0). South Division Champs The Bulls clinched the IL South Division Thursday night, returning the team to the postseason after a two year absence. With 13 division titles in their 20 years as a Triple-A team, the past two marks marked just the second time that the Bulls failed to win the division in back-to-back seasons (the other was a three-year stretch from ). Since Durham joined the International League in 1998, only Norfolk (3) and Charlotte (2) have won more than one division title. Big Fly for Featherston Taylor Featherston provided all the runs the Bulls would need last night with one swing of the bat when the 27-year-old lined a three-run homer to right in the fourth. The big fly was the fourth of the season for Featherston with the Bulls and his seventh Triple-A bomb after he began the year playing for Lehigh Valley. Featherston has been boom or bust at the plate over the past two weeks, as the Houston native has collected six multi-hit games over the past 12 nights while also going hitless in four of those games. Three of Featherston s four Bulls homers have occured in the past two weeks as have 10 of his 15 RBI in a Durham uniform. 80 Win Club The Bulls picked up their 80th win of the season last night, joining Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the only two teams in the IL to reach the plateau so far this year. The 80-win benchmark is a prestigious one in Durham history, as the 2017 Bulls become the 10th team in the 20-year Triple-A history of the club to reach the threshold and the 21st since the club s first season in The last time the Bulls reached 80 wins was in 2013, when the 87-win club won the Triple-A Championship after leading the IL in regular season victories. Minor League Strikeout Record The dominant Durham pitching staff picked up eight more strikeouts last night to raise their season total to 1,324. The lofty K number leads all of Minor League Baseball and is already a new International League record, breaking the previous mark of 1,287 which the Bulls set just last season. Durham is now quickly approaching the all-time Minor League record of 1,345 strikeouts, which came from the High-A San Jose Gianta in Chasing History The Bulls record through 132 games has them in line to finish with one of the best records in franchise history. This years Durham squad is on pace to finish with 86 wins, one back of the Best Records in Bulls History 1st: 1969 (89-51) 2nd: 2010 (88-55) 3rd: 2013 (87-57) T-21: 2017 (80-52) *On pace for 86 wins 2013 team and place them just three wins behind of the recordsetting 1969 crew.
