Newsletter No: rd June 2017 National Maths Final - Team Challenge On Monday we travelled to London to take part in the UKMT National Team Maths Challenge. Our team comprised Rebecca Keetley, Abhinav Ramisetty, Anish Krishnan and Tom Hall. We had done exceptionally well to qualify, in the first place, after competing against 25 schools in the Regional Qualifying event at Macmillan College, Middlesbrough. The venue for the final was Lindley Hall, an agricultural college set in the impressive surroundings of Westminster. There were 88 schools in total, including the many outstanding schools in the country. There were four rounds in the main competition, as well as a poster competition on the set topic of polyominoes. Our team performed admirably, particularly in the high-octane relay round and we emerged a highly creditable 14th out of the 88 present. Originally over 1700 schools took part, so this places us easily within the top 1% of all schools. Simon Singh, author of Fermat's Last Theorem and the Mathematical Secrets of the Simpsons and Dr Peter Neumann, Oxford Mathematics lecturer and original chairman of the UKMT gave the closing address and presented the prizes. Our team performed brilliantly and have proved that they can compete against any opposition at the highest possible level. The whole day was a wonderful experience. Mr M Pointon Geography trip to Bridlington On Thursday the 15th of June, every Geography pupil in Fourth Year travelled to the seaside town of Bridlington. We were fortunate to have some amazing weather for conducting our tourism fieldwork. Our teachers set us the task of collecting three different types of data. First, we had to do an Environmental Quality Index. This involved going to six different locations and studying pedestrian and traffic count, in small groups of about four. We then had to fill in a land use survey, this also meant going to six set locations but this time we had to count the different types of buildings e.g. charity shops and offices. The final data we had to collect was by conducting a questionnaire. In our groups, we had to ask at least ten people, who we thought were tourists, to fill in a small questionnaire about how they got to Bridlington and why they were visiting. Overall everybody enjoyed the trip and we are thankful to the teachers for organising and giving up their time to take us. Jacob Atkinson Dance Showcase What a show! The Dance Showcase reached a new level with over 130 performers from Year 3 (Prep) to Upper Sixth taking to the stage. The talent was mesmerising with pupils performing a wide variety of dance styles throughout the evening. The dances were choreographed by Mrs Dunkley and it was apparent how much the pupils love dancing from their enthusiasm and the short video clips! The cheerleading routines were equally impressive, thanks to Miss Gamble. The show concluded with a spectacular finale and a warm ovation from the appreciative audience!
2 Speech and Drama It has been a busy year in Speech and Drama with a high volume of pupils completing their LAMDA examinations in Speaking Verse and, Acting and Public Speaking. It has been a pleasure to work with all the pupils this year and I am very proud of the results they have achieved. 48 students completed their examinations during the school year, with 59% receiving a Distinction and 41% receiving a Merit. I would like to extend a special mention to Hollie Blake (U6), Faida Al-Maiyah (L6), Shruti Nag (L6), Marium Mahmoud (L6), Anjali Pradeep (L6), Rishi Kumar (L6) & Arun Thakur (Third Year); for all achieving their Grade 8 Gold Medal this year. The grades achieved and the students involved are as follows: Grade 8 Hollie Blake (U6) Public Speaking Faida Al-Maiyah (L6) - Speaking Verse and Rishi Kumar (L6) - Speaking Verse and Anjali Pradeep (L6) - Speaking Verse and Shruti Nag (L6) - Acting Marium Mahmoud (L6) Acting Arun Thakur (Third Year) - Speaking Verse and Grade 7 Caitlin Keenan (Fifth Year) Acting Ishika Singh (Fifth Year) Acting Kamiela Soeldner (Fifth Year) Acting Jai Trivedi (Second Year) Acting Grade 6 Sriram Venkatesh (Fifth Year) Speaking Verse and Ayra Cheema (Fourth Year) Acting Robbie Wilmot (Fourth Year) Acting Ayah Mostafa (Fourth Year) Speaking Verse and Abigail Humphrys (Fourth Year) Speaking Verse and Aditi Ratnaparkhi (Fourth Year) Speaking Verse and Robbie Wilmot (Fourth Year) Speaking Verse and Kaushiki Dasgupta (Third Year) Acting JuJu Mon (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Ollie Tompkins (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Anish Krishnan (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Tharun Suresh (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Shreya Rajesh Kumar (First Year) Speaking Verse and Grade 5 Katherine Clements (Fourth Year) Acting Aditya Raviprakash (Fourth Year) Acting Tamara Saltikov (Fourth Year) Acting Aditya Raviprakash (Fourth Year) Public Speaking Lucy Barker (Third Year) Acting Pranav Kambalimath (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Natalie Limaye (Third Year) Speaking Verse and Emily Carter (Second Year) Acting Thomas Crack (Second Year) Acting Finlay Gilraine (Second Year) Acting Maddy Jackson (Second Year) Acting Shilpi Nanda (Second Year) Acting Ananya Padmanabhan (Second Year) Acting Ananya Singh (Second Year) Acting Vignesh Janakiraman (Second Year) Speaking Verse and Ed Pattison (Second Year) Speaking Verse and Shreya Rajesh Kumar (First Year) Speaking Verse and Aishani Paul (First Year) Speaking Verse and Ali Al-Maiyah (Y1) Speaking Verse and Grade 4 Abigail Goodchild Maguire (Second Year) Acting Patricia Jude (Second Year) Acting William Pugsley (Second Year) Speaking Verse and Ihsaan Mahmood (First Year) Speaking Verse and Lucas Mowbray (First Year) Speaking Verse and Darlington Speech and Drama Festival Despite a busy term and impending examinations, it was lovely to see so many pupils participate in the Darlington Speech and Drama Festival. The pupils chose to enter various categories where they competed against other young people of the same age to win their chosen category. The categories involved were: Sight Reading, Solo Acting (Shakespeare and non- Shakespeare), Verse Speaking, Sonnet & Duologue. I would like to praise the following pupils who all took part and were a credit to the school in their focus, presentation and conduct: Aditi Ratnaparkhi, Tharun Suresh, Kaushiki Dasgupta, Natalie Limaye, Vignesh Janakiraman, Lucas Mowbray, Tom Crack, Ananya Singh, Ananya Padmanabhan, Aditya Raviprakash, Matthew Howden, Sophia Jones, Kaavya Venkatesh, Shrish Nair, Natalie Limaye, Patricia Jude, Shilpi Nanda & Felix Humphrys. I would like to extend a special mention to Kaushiki Dasgupta (Third Year) who placed 1st in 3 of her 4 categories, leading her to be the overall winner of the Intermediate Championship. Very well done. Kaushiki Dasgupta with family and Judges at Darlington Speech and Drama Festival Thank you for all your hard work. Mrs H Charlton
3 Third Year Journey - report next week wanted a win. In the second innings, 6 of the opposition were caught out with a stunning catch from Martha Wyatt, following a strong bat from Barnard Castle. Yarm stopped any increase in score for 12 balls but allowed Barnard Castle to gain an extra 5 rounders in the last 15. Yarm stepped up for their final innings needing 7.5 rounders to win. A few steady half rounders from Megan Broadhead, Imogen Slack, Georgia Charnley and Namisha Chawla brought us close but the clincher was the 3 full rounders in a row from Martha Wyatt, Olivia Fletcher and Ruth Fletcher, the girls meeting their 7.5 target to take the win! A perfect way to end the season - well done to all! Player of the match: Martha Wyatt BGS Invitational Tournament Rounders It was a game of two halves from the U12 rounders team in their final game of the year against Barnard Castle School. Despite strong bats from Amelia Leader and Poppy Gratton, some weaker than expected fielding found the girls 7-5 down after one innings and they knew they would have to step up their game if they The U13 and U12 teams headed across to Bradford for their annual competition. It is always a high quality and well attended event, attracting top tennis schools from around the North of England. It is a team tournament, where each age groups consists of two pairs whose results are added together to give a combined score. In the U12 draw, the pairs of Will Woodhead/Ollie McPartland and George Kitson/Dan Walters narrowly missed out on a place in the cup semi-final on game count back to Bolton School. Undeterred, they played some good tennis in their 5th place final against Hymers College. The U13 team of Casper Grylls/Noah Bickenson and James Beck/Henri Butler stormed through the pool stages with both pairs recording strong wins against Manchester Grammar, Woodhouse Grove and Hymers College. Progressing to the semi-finals, they both produced powerful tennis against the host school, defeating Bradford Grammar in straight sets. This took us into the final against a talented Bolton School team. Our first pair lost a good match 3-6 which put pressure on their team mates. We were 0-3 down with Bolton needing only 1 more game to be assured of victory! Spurred on by the challenge, Beck/Butler duly reeled off 6 games in a row to win 6-3 and level the match! With games equal, we went to a championship tie break shoot out! Grylls/Beck took to the court and produced some great tennis under pressure to hold their nerve and win it 11-9 to take the title. Huge well done to all 8 players who took part in the day.
4 HMC North of England Mixed Doubles Last week, 8 of our best tennis players competed in mixed doubles at the U15 and U13 HMC event. This is the only time in the year that the pairs are mixed, meaning that the players need to quickly get into their stride and start well. This is a team event, so both pairs for each age group count towards the result. Everyone started strongly and produced some good tennis in the pool stages against the likes of QEGS & Wakefield Girls combined, Giggleswick, Bradford Grammar and GSAL. Both age groups were on good form and won their respective pools; the U15 by virtue of a superior game difference and the U13's without dropping a single set! The U13 team of Caspar Grylls/Abby Scott and Noah Bickenson/Roya Bayat made it through to the semi-final where they lost out to a strong RGS team. They finished third overall, a great achievement. It was a similar story in the U15 competition, where Jack Critchlow/Lily Spensley and Guy Gill/Amelia Richardson had a fantastic semi-final against Wakefield, only to lose out on a tie break deciding set. They also finished third overall., with all players stull a year under age. A huge well done to all the players. North of England U14 and U12 Championships Last Saturday was the annual event for the best U12 and U14 school tennis players in the North of England. It is a pairs event and we had a strong side, albeit a year young in the U14 competition, so headed into the tournament quietly confident of a good result. The boys didn't disappoint! In the U14 competition, James Beck and Noah Bickenson started off strongly with a 6-1 win against Bradford Grammar. They continued with great form through the pool stages and progressed into the knockout phase. The pair reached the cup quarter-final before they went out. A great achievement, especially playing against opposition a year older. The other pair of Lochlain Lacy and Henri Butler showed real fighting spirit in their pool. They worked really well in a team against older and bigger opponents. They narrowly missed out of the cup knockout spot but fought through to the plate quarter-finals. Great work by all 4 players. In the U12 competition, Will Woodhead and Oliver McPartland had a really tough draw with several A pairs in their pool, from QEGS, Hymers, GSAL and RGS. To their credit, they stuck to the task and battled for every point, sadly missing out on a place in the knockout stages. They will be better and stronger for the experience. The A pair, of Caspar Grylls and George Kitson, played some cracking tennis, with power and precision, in their pool games. Despite a slip against Manchester Grammar, they still dominated and went through to the cup semi-final. After a good win, they headed into the final to play RGS Newcastle, a strong pair who had just defeated Manchester in their semifinal. The Yarm team played a fantastic set of tennis, holding serve and breaking their opponents early to build a good lead. They kept the pressure on right throughout the match and closed out a superb 6-4 victory to be crowned North of England Champions. A huge well done to all players who took part. Inter-counties Athletics Final Huge congratulations to Anna Harrison, Jess Coapes and Sophie Brining who took part in the North of England athletics Championships at Hexham on Saturday having qualified last weekend. Anna ran the 1500m in a PB of 5.24:71mins. To produce a PB in the soaring heat was superb achievement. Jess Coapes threw just shy of her PB with 24.91m in discus and 31.97m in the hammer, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Sophie Brining ran the 1500m in a time of 5.38:00mins in what was a fast race. For these three to get to the North Finals and participate for Cleveland is a fantastic achievement and they should be super proud of their efforts.
Flyer Intermediate and Senior Duologues Riddle Last week's winner: Yumna Ellidir CO1 JJA Last week's answer: The first step was to write out all the sets of three numbers that when multiplied together get 36. Now is the hard part... You don't know the hallway number you walked in through and can't check, this is what the numbers add up to. This is where the clue telling you that every clue must be used and that the largest number only appears once, come into use. You now add up all the combinations. Since you have to use the clue about the largest number, the hallway number must be the only number you see appearing twice as the sum: 13. The two combinations that get you 13 are 1,6,6 and 2,2,9. And since the largest number can only appear once, the answer is 2,2,9 Third to Fifth Year and Sixth Form Thursday 29th June 2017, 6.30pm Adults 2 / Pupils 1 Tickets available from School Office This week's riddle: Breakfast What are the two things you can't have for breakfast? Please send any answers in to 16SinhaP@yarmschool.org, remember to add your tutor group (or initials for teachers) and those with the quickest correct answers will get announced in next week's issue.
